yarra ranges program 2014

Yarra Ranges is full of tracks, rough pathways and connections between places. The pattern of marks and impressions provide evidence of previous stories, activity and journeys. Tracks marked out before and after white settlement that lead and invite us to discover what lies ahead. Culture Tracks is Yarra Ranges’ arts and heritage dynamic program of events. Culture Tracks is a contemporary program that reflects and expresses our community’s desire to access meaningful arts and heritage experiences. It provides inspiration for our community to actively engage and participate in local culture. Culture Tracks helps shape Yarra Ranges as a place of cultural vitality. It builds on Council’s role to create the space for arts and heritage to flourish through the delivery of Yarra Ranges’ program of performances, workshops, exhibitions and events, accessible for all. You can track from Burrinja in Upwey, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, Montrose Town Centre, Memorial Hall Healesville and Mooroolbark Community Centre to the Upper Yarra Arts Centre in Warburton. I encourage you to visit, engage, take in a show or create something as part of this wonderful program and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many Culture Tracks events. The Evolution of Yarra Ranges’ Main Streets

The Challenge of Colour

Discover how the main streets and shopping precincts of Yarra Ranges have changed over time and explore what they will look like in the future.

Explore delightfully bright, bold and bizarre textiles created by 92-year old artist Isabel Foster. Isabel’s extensive body of work shows her lifetime devotion to needle, thread and colour and highlights her ability to break with conventions and push creative boundaries.

This exhibition features objects and stories of innovative shopkeepers, iconic businesses, and the many people and places that make up the fabric of our main streets.

As a child born between two world wars, Isabel’s upbringing planted seeds of resilience, independence and creativity, which have become the hallmarks of her remarkable textile art career.

Changing Places: The Evolution of Yarra Ranges’ Main Streets is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s Your Community Heritage Program. Check out the History Pin project at www.historypin.com/changingplaces

Art of Response

Art of Response asks visitors to consider how art and collecting have been used by individuals and institutions in response to the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. The exhibition features selected items from the Victorian Bushfires Collection on loan from Museum Victoria, and works and stories from artists based in the Yarra Ranges region.

Recording and Collecting Black Saturday

Disaster response is commonly associated with emergency services, recovery programs, aid and mass media. However, over time it is often through art, artefacts and memory that cultural meaning and significance are defined and recorded. Art of Response explores how artworks and everyday objects can become significant historical artefacts and how their meaning may be transformed over time.

Red Stitch Actors Theatre presents the Australian premiere of Tom Wells’ hit new play, The Kitchen Sink, a touching comedy about family life and pipe dreams. As it follows its characters throughout a year, The Kitchen Sink puts a hilarious spin on blue collar domestic drama with a superbly nuanced and heart warming tale of human fragility. For one family in the faded Yorkshire seaside resort of 6

Withernsea, not all is going to plan. Pieces are falling off Martin’s milk float as quickly as he is losing customers. Son Billy pins his hopes of a place at Art College on a portrait of Dolly Parton, while his sister Sophie’s dreams of becoming a Jiu Jitsu teacher might just be disappearing down the plughole. Holding the family together is mum Kath, a dinner lady with the patience of a saint – except something’s up with her sink.

A funny, warm, gorgeous play with damn fine music! Set in outback Queensland in the 60’s, an unlikely friendship forms between two women of wildly different temperaments, united in their abandonment by the men in their lives and their passion for all things country and all things American. Vicki is a submissive housewife and conforming Catholic, forever awaiting the arrival of her itinerant bulldozer-driving husband. Into her 7

small-town existence comes Rae, a brash, lusty and hard-living barmaid, abandoned on the roadside by her rodeo-riding husband of five weeks. Together they grope their way through the confusions of the not-so-swinging sixties towards independence, carried on dreams and the songs of Hank Williams and Patsy Kline. Don’t miss out on this heartwarming piece of musical comedy theatre!

Whitegate - Where Art and Life Collide

Woodhenge

Rod Moss has been a resident of Alice Springs since 1984. His paintings are a result of his unique and close relationship with the Arrente community of Whitegate, one of several town camps on the outskirts of Alice Springs. The carefully constructed and referenced paintings present the Whitegate families in everyday life situations depicting strong connectedness, country and kinship.

The Woodhenge Carvings are nine wooden sculptures which have taken Irish woodcarver Ronnie Sexton six years to complete. These extraordinary creations range from 3 to 4 metres in height. Carved from Cedar wood and adorned with hundreds of crystals, stones, rocks and 24 carat gold-leaf gilding, each carries intricate and detailed symbols of cultures from across the planet.

The exhibition is an intriguing and intimate portrait of the families of Whitegate amongst the on-going struggle with health issues, alcoholism and violence.

An Evening with Max Gillies

In 2014 Max is back to ask the big questions: Is Australia suffering a leadership drought? There was a time when politicians could inspire us. But were they really any better than the current crop? Is it a case of the more things change the more they stay the same? Max discards the make-up and wigs for a rich collection of pen-portraits. Encoded explores how digitised space alters our perceptions of physical space, and how digital media changes our relationship to the body. Encoded is a visually stunning work that creates a ravishing immersive world of shimmering images dissolving and reforming as the performers sweep across space. An aerial dance performance, 36

Encoded uses the latest interactive technologies to build a projected digital environment in response to the movements of the performers. Immerse yourself in this spectacular work as it transforms the beautiful auditorium at the Memo in Healesville. “Encoded is powerful and hypnotic... combines fabulous contemporary dance, aerial acrobatics and the latest in computer images and technology” – Sydney Arts Guide

The Garden of Forking Paths A dLux MediaArts touring exhibition

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum SAT 8 NOV 2014 SUN 1 FEB 2015

‘The Path’, Tale-of-Tales (Released: 18 March, 2009) Designed and directed by Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn, Music by Jarboe & Kris Force

The Garden of Forking Paths is an interactive exhibition of historic and contemporary artists’ computer games. All of the games in the show can be played by visitors, some on ‘antique’ machines that have been sourced so the older pieces can be experienced with authenticity. The presented pieces were created by artists that push the bounds of the genre and break the orthodox set of rules. These artists have been creating and 37

modifying computer games, experimenting with the notions of what a game is and exploring alternate approaches to interaction and play methodologies. The works span the last three decades — from Jaron Lanier’s 1983 Commodore 64 game ‘Moondust’ through to Tale-ofTales 2009 release ‘The Path’ — a period which has seen incredible advances in technology and the birth of the information age.

Mortality is something we all carry around with us. Often the conversation we have regarding it is with ourselves, or quietly to a trusted friend. With delicacy, cheekiness and wit, Two Mortals investigates: ‘how can we talk about death, and if we could, would it enrich our lives?’

Two women live alone but side by side. One day they meet over a jar of buttons and an awkward friendship begins… Button, a new work recently devised for La Mama Courthouse, is an intimate show with a wonderful balance of light and dark, humour and contemplation, plus fantastic live music and songs.

Assemblages and Glass Sculptures

Ghosts of the Last Chinese Miners

Carolyn Henry is the winner of the 2013 She exhibition award at Walker St Gallery.

Kerryl Shirley and Tim Bassett present artworks using multiple components designed to excite and delight. Glass sculptures with tendrils that simultaneously invade and embrace, discarded objects of wood, tin and wire become transformed into colourful and coherent assemblages.

Digital images and charcoal drawings by Benno Poeder exploring the relationship between the immigrant gold miner and the landscape of the Yarra Valley during the gold rush of the mid 19th century.

The cycle of life, birth and ageing is represented in this body of work in scratchboard, known for its illustrative qualities in the printing medium. Carolyn has set herself the challenge of taking an unforgiving medium and bending it to her will.
