Leisure

Esch/Alzette is the heart of Southern Luxembourg, the so-called ‘Minett’ region. Long before the Grand Duchy became a global player in the financial sector and the European Union institutions were established, the region was known throughout Europe for iron ore exploitation and processing. While the ‘Minett’s industrial heritage remains omnipresent, Esch and its modern Belval district have become popular for students and concertgoers. Several music venues, including the country’s largest – the Rockhal – are found here. Take a tour of the blast furnaces of Belval, visit the national mining museums in Rumelange and Ellergronn or take a ride on the authentic steam train to discover the region’s fascinating culture. The large Galgenberg Park located directly behind the youth hostel is perfect to relax and its petting zoo ‘Déierepark Esch’ is a real highlight for children in particular. The country’s South is also very popular with mountain bikers as a series of exciting trails criss-cross the region. Due to the youth hostel’s proximity to the train station, Esch-sur-Alzette is the perfect place for excursions through the entire region. More information about the activities: www.visitminett.lu
