TO THE MANOR BORN

I’ve a real sense of familiarity as I arrive at Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club. Although this is the first time I’ve actually visited, over the years I’ve written about countless couples who’ve chosen to say “I do” here. And it’s so easy to see why.

Arriving in the beautifully landscaped grounds I’m struck by just how peaceful it is here. Dalmahoy is just 20 minutes from Edinburgh city centre and conveniently placed for the airport, yet you’d never know it. From the manicured golf courses and surrounding grounds, to the beautiful lake behind the grand manor house, there’s a feeling of being worlds away from the city throng.

Inside, the décor is an effortless blend of the mansion’s period charm with more modern design. I’m escorted to the grandly named Her Ladyship’s Room, passing a glittering chandelier that forms the focal point of the central staircase, and it’s immediately obvious why this is the hotel’s honeymoon suite. The room sits on the top floor of the manor and three large windows flood it with natural light. The four poster bed is huge and oh-so-comfortable and there’s an enviable bathroom, complete with deep bath and rainfall shower. You’ll also love the amazing view over the lake and beyond to Edinburgh Castle.

Just one of the beauties of getting married at Dalmahoy is the flexible approach. The hotel only ever hosts one wedding per day and it’s up to you just how you shape yours. There are two wedding packages to choose from – The Earls is perfect for more intimate gatherings with up to 50 guests within one of the Manor House suites, while The Morton package is for larger weddings of up to 250 in the impressive modern Dalmahoy Suite. The neutral décor here gives you the freedom to style your wedding however you want, and the lighting trestles can be set to any colour, while partition walls can divide up the space, making it more intimate before your evening guests arrive. And couples who have their hearts set on a church ceremony will fall for the delightful St Mary’s Church in the grounds.

If you want to get married outdoors though the lawn is ideal with the house serving as a gorgeous backdrop. But mindful of the changeable Scottish weather, the team at Dalmahoy always book out the suite too, just incase you need to switch. And sticking with the flexible approach, if you want to bring in food trucks, prosecco carts or even a mobile escape room you’re totally welcome to.

Post-ceremony drinks receptions are held in the sumptuous boardroom on the first floor. The major draw here has to be the doors that open out onto the exterior double staircase, meaning you can take your drinks reception outside onto the terrace below.

Being a golf resort hotel it’s only natural that there’s a dedicated wedding golf buggy – she’s called Wendy btw – to drive you around the grounds for your photographs. And that’s not all in terms of extras. With 215 bedrooms, the hotel is perfect for large guestlists. They’ll love the swimming pool and fitness suite and, of course, the chance to play a round of golf.

And if you want to go all out for a wedding wow factor, there’s always the possibility to arrange a fireworks display in the grounds.

Good news if you want to wed on a Sunday. You’ll get a 10% discount and there’s also a reduced price for winter weddings from October to March
