NEWSBRIEFS

+ Woman drowns on Longboat Key A woman drowned late Wednesday afternoon on the beach in the 4300 block of Longboat Key, near Pelican Harbour condominium. Police identified the victim as Jacqueline Landaverde, 36, of Snellville, Ga. She was staying on the Key at Turtle Crawl Inn. A witness told police that he was fishing in an inflatable watercraft and heard calls for help coming from the sandbar area. The witness said that he saw a man “frantically waving and calling out” and the victim being toppled by waves. The witness estimated that Landaverde was under water for three to five minutes. The witness helped to pull her to shore and assisted in attempts to revive her. According to Longboat Key Fire Rescue Deputy Chief David Kyle, Landaverde was likely caught in a rip current. Firefighter/paramedics transported Landaverde to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m.

+ Key residents eligible for FEMA assistance

+ Publix progress report

Longboat Key residents could be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance for damages sustained during Tropical Storm Debby. FEMA has opened a temporary disaster recovery center for those whose homes or businesses were damaged in Manatee County at the Manatee County Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto, with hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. A community-relations team began canvassing Sarasota County

The only thing that can top Publix’s July 12 “topping off” celebration? The actual top going on the grocery-store chain’s new Longboat Key store. Roofing work has been ongoing throughout last week on the new Publix, while scaffolding is going up for the retail shops directly to the west of the new grocery store. Meanwhile, CVS is beginning to look like an operational store, with its wall sign, windows and doors in place.
