Michael Kors is one of Longboat Key’s most famous new property owners. For weeks, rumors have floated that Kors would participate in the Longboat Key Garden Club’s Taste of the Keys fashion show fundraiser Jan. 27. But alas, “Project Longboat” won’t become a reality, at least this season. Kors withdrew his commitment last week. But the show will go on. Instead, the Garden Club will welcome fashions from a store with home turf on the Key: J.McLaughlin, located in the Shoppes of Bay Isles. “I am very grateful to have J.McLaughlin as a partner in this event because they’re a quality brand, they’re local, and they’ve already supported community events,” Garden Club President Susan Phillips said. “They’re giving us a more enhanced show than we would’ve had with Michael Kors.” SEE PAGE 14A

Commissioners Linde, Zunz: Sitting soon on a dais near you

NEW COMMISSIONER PLATFORMS

Armando Linde and Ed Zunz will become the newest town commissioners in March, after the deadline for candidates to qualify passes without challengers.

Ed Zunz wants to make sure the Town Commission doesn’t forget the north end of the island and its future revitalization. Zunz wants a roundabout at Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway as soon as possible. He thinks it was a mistake to put all of the town’s BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement money — approximately $968,000 — into pension funds. He also supports revitalization of Whitney Beach Plaza and neighboring parcels for a future boutique hotel. Zunz, a retired litigation attorney, also supports a town plan to cull the Longbeach Village peacock population to 12 males.

KURT SCHULTHEIS SENIOR EDITOR

Your next Longboat Key Town Commission became official at noon Monday, and not one ballot was cast. After Monday’s deadline for candidates to qualify passed without a single challenge, Town Clerk Trish Granger sent a congratulatory email to two commission newcomers and two incumbents, informing them they will become commissioners for twoyear terms in March. Newcomers are District 1 Commissioner Armando Linde and District 5 Commissioner Ed Zunz. Vice Mayor and District 3 Commissioner Terry Gans and atlarge Commissioner Irwin Pastor will return to the dais in March for new two-year terms. Linde will serve in the seat Commissioner Lynn Larson will leave in March after serving three consecutive two-year terms. Term limit requirements prevented Larson from running for another term. Zunz steps into the commission

seat his wife, Pat, has held since 2011. Longboaters, though, should still plan to wear an “I Voted” sticker on March 15. With the town’s electorate backing a project not to exceed $25.25 million to bury Gulf of Mexico Drive power lines and utilities two weeks ago, commissioners are ready to craft a second referendum question that will have town staff scrambling to make deadlines for the March 15 ballot. Commissioners asked town staff at their regular workshop Nov. 9 to devise funding mechanisms for a referendum question that supports a non-ad valorem funding method for the remaining above-ground utilities in neighborhoods and Key side streets. Commissioners unanimously supported a plan for the neighborhood project that distributes funding islandwide. The last time the town did not have a commission race was in 2011, when the electorate still voted on term limit and beach bond referendums.

Armando Linde says the most pressing issues for Longboat Key are finishing the revision of the town’s land use development codes and comprehensive plan — and doing it more efficiently than the town has over the last three years. Linde also believes it’s critical to create a fair funding formula to bury remaining neighborhood power lines. A retired economist for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Linde supports the decision to use the town’ BP settlement money to pay down its $23 million in pension debt.

Bird

Bounty A trapper could get a golden egg of $25,000 to cull the Longbeach Village peacock population to 12 males. KURT SCHULTHEIS SENIOR EDITOR

First, you lure them in with a false sense of security and lots of cracked corn. What follows includes trapping nets, cages and — for the most elusive of peacocks that hide in trees and bushes — tranquilizer gun darts. That’s the $25,000 plan of attack for reducing the Longbeach Village peafowl population from approximately 150 birds to 12 males. Town Manager Dave Bullock informed the Longboat Key Town Commission Nov. 9 the town is close to finalizing an agreement with Palmetto-based Nuisance Wildlife Removal that’s willing to do the job. The contractor will charge a $1,500 setup fee for traps and cracked corn and charge $200 to catch the first 10 birds. Additional birds will cost $150 each to catch. And for the birds that aren’t exactly bird-brained that know better than to be lured to the traps and hide in trees to avoid capture? Those birds will cost the town $275 apiece to be stunned from above with tranquilizer gun darts. “If the commission direction is truly to reduce the population to a small number of males, to achieve that goal, we end up using tranquilizers for the ones too smart to be trapped,” Bullock said. Even when the flock is culled to 12 males, that doesn’t mean the end of peacock population growth because females lay eggs in trees and in other hard-tofind places. That means the town may need a recurring budget line item for peacock removal until all of the birds except 12 males are found and relocated. The news frustrated some commissioners. “We should just get rid of all of them,” said Commissioner Phill Younger. Mayor Jack Duncan agreed. “If one female pops up, we’re back to where we started,” Duncan said. “If we’re going to spend $25,000 to get rid of them, I think we get all of them.” But when Duncan asked for commission consensus for removing all the birds, only he,

For approximately $1,500, trappers will set up one or more feeding locations on private property with owner approval. For seven to 10 days, the company will lay down corn and birdseed at the trapping location to get peafowl used to being fed there.

$2,000 About $21,500

Most remaining birds will be trapped for $150 each. But nets and cages won’t be enough to lure the savviest peacocks, which hide in trees and bushes. Those birds will be caught for $275 each using of tranquilizer gun darts.

After the seven- to 10-day period, the first 10 birds will be trapped using nets and cages at a cost of $200 per bird.

FLOCK TALK “Some people in the Village really love those birds. Some people may say those males are really lonely and try to sneak them a female bird.” — Mayor Jack Duncan

Younger and Commissioner Pat Zunz supported the suggestion. Vice Mayor Terry Gans said the town should stick with the current plan of 12 males, and that’s the direction commissioners gave Bullock. “The objective is 12 male birds,” Gans said. “I think that’s a good number.” Commissioner Irwin Pastor agreed. “Some people really enjoy them,” Pastor said. “It’s a question of balance for the community.” Zunz, who lives on the north end, said the birds easily diminish the quality of life for property owners who have to deal with the birds squawking on their rooftops, pooping all over their walkways, pecking holes in their screens and scratching paint off cars when they see their reflection in the paint. “Peacocks can be as much of a nuisance as raccoons,” Zunz said. “They can be downright nasty, and they’re disruptive.” James Braha and Michael Drake, who were previously charged with reducing a growing Village peacock population, said they believe the contract might finally rid the Village of its peacock problem. “The contract seems a bit excessive, cost-wise,” Drake said. “But it sounds like it will work.”

WHERE WILL THE PEACOCKS GO? Peacocks relocated from the Village will get a new home and will not be destroyed. Resident James Braha, who was previously charged with reducing the population, said the birds went to farms in Myakka or Arcadia in the past. At press time, Nuisance Wildlife Removal had not returned a voicemail seeking peacock relocation information. Town Manager Dave Bullock wasn’t sure about the peacocks’ next destination. “I have no idea where they are sent,” he said. “All I know is they won’t be on Longboat Key any longer.”

Braha agreed. “It’s very hard for people to understand the problem because they don’t have to deal with this nuisance every day,” Braha said. “It’s time to rid the Village of this problem.” The commission originally discussed a $10,000 trapper contract that did not draw bidders until the town revised its terms.

“I, personally, have no problem with using tranquilizer guns for peacocks or their supporters.”* — Vice Mayor Terry Gans *Gans noted his comments were facetious, and in no way does he support the use of tranquilizers on peacock supporters.

Bullock: Right on the money Town Manager Dave Bullock is fine with his $180,000 salary, but the avid boater floats one request before the commission. KURT SCHULTHEIS SENIOR EDITOR

Mayor Jack Duncan is baffled that he can’t persuade Town Manager Dave Bullock to accept a $7,200 raise. Bullock, though, is willing to take 15 additional paid vacation days per year — a period that amounts to approximately $10,380 in salary. Duncan used a discussion about Bullock’s annual evaluation at the Nov. 9 Longboat Key Town Commission regular workshop to propose a 4% raise for Bullock. “I have argued this point ad nauseam with the town manager in private, but this time I will do it from the dais,” Duncan said. “It’s very hard for me to not look at what this town has accomplished with our staff over the past five years without looking at the town manager and his performance, which I think is absolutely excellent. I don’t really care what he said five years ago when he said he didn’t want a pay raise.” Townwide, non-union employ-

ees received an average 3.8% increase in October through a new merit-based system Bullock implemented. “I looked at what we provided for all our folks across the board, and I think a 4% pay increase is absolutely the bare bones minimum I would provide when comparing his performance against the town,” Duncan said. Commissioners began to gain consensus that they would consider a raise for the town manager. “I would be happy to consider it,” said Vice Mayor Terry Gans. “I realize he’s been at the same salary for five years.” During the conversation, Bullock began to raise his hand — to Duncan’s chagrin. “I’ll acknowledge him, but I don’t want to acknowledge him, because I know what he’s going to say,” Duncan said. Duncan was right: Bullock smiled before politely declining the raise. “I appreciate everything you’ve said, and I read your (evaluation) comments and look for areas where I can improve,” Bullock said. “As to compensation, it’s a contract. I will not accept an increase. I took this job knowing what was going on, and there’s no need to spend any more time on it.” Bullock said he has no plans to retire any time soon, even though he’s beginning the fifth year of a

But the town manager did make one request. “I’m interested in a little more time off, and that comes straight from my wife,” Bullock said. Bullock currently receives 10 days of vacation and 10 director days off of paid leave per year. Town Clerk Trish Granger confirmed Bullock would have to sign a contract that includes a pay increase or any other changes. “If we’re in agreement with giving him a 4% raise, stick a contract in front of him, and let him sign it or not sign it,” Commissioner Phill Younger said. But with Bullock not agreeing to the raise verbally, the commission resigned itself to revising the contract to include an amount of extra time off that has yet to be determined. “He doesn’t want a pay increase,” Commissioner Lynn Larson said. “He came with a high salary. He wants more time off. It’s in our best interest to give him time off and his wife the time off.” At the end of the discussion, Gans noted how uncomfortable it Silk is to discuss an evaluation for the Courtesy photo Poinsettias: Dave Bullock would rather have more paid time off on his boat to fish with his wife, town manager in a public forum Donna, and grandson Evan Ohern, 3, whom Bullock calls “a great fisherman.” required by the state’s Sunshine Buy one, get the

Bay Isles beach: Access denied KURT SCHULTHEIS SENIOR EDITOR

The good news: The town learned Nov. 12 that it received a federal permit for its $10,983,192 dump truck sand haul project. That means work can begin after season in April, as scheduled. The bad news: The Bay Isles Association board voted Monday afternoon not to allow the town to use its Bay Isles Beach Club as one of its access points for dump trucks bringing sand to the eroded shoreline. Last month, the board heard a presentation from Town Manager Dave Bullock outlining why access to the private beach club at 2111 Gulf of Mexico Drive will make the town’s priciest beach project in the next two years more manageable and save time and, potentially, taxpayer money. But when Bay Isles President William Levine suggested sending a copy of the town’s presentation to all Bay Isles homeowners at Monday’s meeting, the majority of residents in attendance opposed giving the town access to their beach club. “A number of people looked at the issue and gave a pretty strong opinion by explaining they don’t want the beach access disturbed,” said Bay Isles Director Michael

Kurt Schultheis

Bay Isles President William Levine suggested at Monday’s meeting that all Bay Isles residents needed a copy of a town presentation before the board considered a beach access request.

Fradkin. Levine said his motivation for sending the information to residents was purely for education about the project and how the beach access would be affected. To use the facility, the town would have had to remove bushes to make the access road to the beach wider and it would have had to tear up the road. Terms of an easement that would have been negotiated would have required the town to relandscape bushes and fix the road after the project’s comple-

tion. “We ask you to vote no and end this discussion,” said Fairway Bay resident Peter Kasden. “There’s no point in discussing this any more because no one wants this.” Fradkin made a motion to reaffirm a past vote denying the town use of the beach club for its beach project; the motion passed 7-1. Levine, who is moving to Sarasota after 35 years as a Longboat Key resident, abstained from voting. The town sought to use the beach club to bring approximately 2,000 dump truck loads of sand to the access over a period of 30 days, depending on weather and traffic. The trucks will bring approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand to the eroded shoreline to the area from just south of the Islander Club to Seaplace. Before the board adjourned for the summer earlier this year, it voted twice to reject the town’s offer to make a presentation requesting use of the access. A plea from Vice Mayor Terry Gans, a Bay Isles resident, to Levine to reconsider allowing the town to make a presentation prompted the board to hear the presentation in October. In total, the project will dump approximately 200,000 cubic yards of sand on portions of the

center shoreline via dump trucks traveling 100 miles each way from an inland sand source in the center of the state. The loss of the access now means the dump trucks have to enter the shuttered Colony Beach & Tennis Resort site a half-amile down the road at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Hauling the sand to the beach and then having it moved by fourwheel-drive trucks farther down the road will force a larger portion of the beach to be closed while sand is transported to the north. And if sea turtle nests are found in the morning, the project will be delayed until the nests can be relocated. Despite the town’s request, Bay Isles residents worried about how the project would inconvenience them. They also had concerns that some of the vegetation that’s taken years to mature wouldn’t be replaced with the same vegetation. “If they go through the Colony, our pavilion, bathrooms and barbecues can still be used, and there’s no damage to our club,” said Bay Isles resident Madelyn Spoll. “And we don’t have to worry about how long it will take to repair the club once the beach project is over.” Bullock explained the town’s case to the board in October. “...The more we haul up and down the beach, the more we pay for trucking and the higher the cost, and it stretches the project out as well,” he said.

Despite pleas from the town, Bay Isles residents won’t open their private beach club to dump trucks for an upcoming project to replenish shores in need of sand.

Lawn Party set to taste success Will this year’s event shatter records again? KRISTEN HERHOLD COMMUNITY EDITOR

With so many delicious options, sometimes it’s impossible choosing to eat at just one restaurant. Once a year, however, you don’t have to make that choice. Why choose just one when you can enjoy samplings from 36 restaurants at the Gourmet Lawn Party Dec. 5? The Lawn Party is the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and the 36 restaurants participating will be the largest number in its five-year history. “It’s eight more than we’ve ever had,” event chairman Michael Garey said. “We have 13 establishments who haven’t participated before, so there’s going to be a broader flavor component to this year’s event.” The Lawn Party has received $36,500 from 17 sponsors, also a record number. “They’re 17 great communityminded businesses,” Garey said. “We can’t thank them enough.” Last year, tickets were $25 in advance, and tickets for the $20,000 grand prize raffle were $100. This year, tickets are $50 and include both admission and a

raffle entry. Every ticket this year will include reserved seating. Six hundred tickets have sold, and Garey hopes to sell out at 1,200. An additional 247 raffle tickets have been sold. “With the raffle being more accessible to everybody and everybody who attends the event being in on the raffle, there should be a lot of excitement for it throughout the day,” Garey said. Also new this year will be a silent auction, with prizes such as stays at various hotels, a new set of golf clubs, wine and golf and complimentary lunch at the Longboat Key Club. Team Renick, a real estate agency that is the platinum sponsor of the event, will offer a free listing package in which it forgoes its commission. Nick Karpathy, a recent Kiwanis Club scholarship recipient, will perform jazz and classical music with his band at the entrance. As in previous years, the Blues Pig Band will perform. Garey hopes to net a total of $80,000 — $12,000 more than last year’s record $68,000. Proceeds from the event will go toward various local children’s charities and the Kiwanis Club’s scholarship fund. “What I’m most looking forward to is sometime in August seeing the smiles on all the faces of our scholarship recipients,” Garey said.

THE COLLECTIVE VS. INDIVIDUAL Elected officials typically gravitate to decisions favoring the collective. But in the case of underground utility lines, each neighborhood should have a choice.

MATT WALSH

This is the debate that confronts every elected official: the collective versus the individual. Which is more important? Which takes precedence? Of course, you know the answer. The right answer is the individual. But invariably, since after the Civil War, the elected let altruism get the better of themselves. They see themselves representing the collective town, the collective county, the collective state. One for all. Certainly not all for the one, for the individual. So it came as little surprise that the Longboat Key Town Commission members unanimously endorsed last week collectivism and redistribution over the individual. As the town moves toward a second referendum to fund the conversion of overhead utility lines to underground lines, the commissioners instructed town staff to try to craft a referendum that would require all Longboat Key property owners to pay for everyone’s underground utility lines — even if they already have paid for their own underground lines. They appear to be favoring another setup like the town’s beach taxing districts. As most property owners know, in 1992, voters narrowly passed a charter amendment that requires residential property owners on the west side of Gulf of Mexico Drive and all commercial property owners to pay 80% of all beach maintenance costs and those on the bay side of Gulf of Mexico Drive to pay 20%. The thinking at the time of that vote was that everyone’s property values benefit from the beach, so everyone should pay for beach renourishment. That same thinking is now driving commissioners to try to devise a referendum that shares the cost collectively of underground utility lines in every neighborhood. It’s a strategy destined for failure and defeat at the polls. Imagine this: When the Bay Isles Association decided to relandscape Bay Isles Parkway recently, imagine

Do it again — at 65 Darn. Everyone who attended Saturday evening’s 60th anniversary celebration of the founding of the town of Longboat Key was looking forward to the main attraction — the fireworks display. But it wasn’t to be. Too windy. A disappointment, yes. But even if the fireworks had gone on, the real highlight of the celebration still would have been the joy that came from Longboaters connecting and reconnecting with one another. Everyone’s spirits were high. You could feel a strong sense of pride hovering over the grassy outfield at Bayfront Park — people proud, happy and grateful to live in paradise. Let’s not wait another 10 years to celebrate. Hey, at 65, let’s party again. By then, the town will be a true Longboater: qualified for Social Security and Medicare. Thanks to all of the sponsors and all who came — all who make Longboat Longboat.

the reaction if it had taxed all Longboat property owners for the cost of the improvements. But after all, won’t all Longboat residents benefit from the improved looks of one of the town’s busiest and most important streets? Or what do you think Country Club Shores, Gulf Shore or Bay Isles residents would say if Longbeach Village residents taxed them to help fund a trapper to round up the Village’s peacocks? After all, wouldn’t the collective value of Longboat properties improve if the peacocks were eradicated? Or what if Country Club Shores residents decide they want extra security on their canals and want to install 24/7 surveillance cameras? Should Village residents be taxed to pay for them? Why not? The cameras would serve to deter crime, improving the overall safety of the Key. In each of these instances, you can be sure there would be intense protests against making everyone pay for these localized improvements. So it should be with making everyone — including property owners who already have paid for underground lines — pay for underground power lines in each neighborhood. There should be protests; it’s not the way to go. Unlike police and fire service or street maintenance, the distribution of electricity is not a town government responsibility. It is not an altruistic venture requiring some Longboaters to support others. Villagers are not responsible for the electrical well-being of Country Club Shores residents and vice versa. In fact, the distribution of electricity is a contractual arrangement between individuals and a privatesector electric company. Individuals buy and use however much electricity they want. Likewise, that arrangement extends to how each property owner wants his power delivered — via above-ground wires or below-ground wires. That’s an arrangement between the power company and the individual, or the power company and each neighborhood grid. Some town commissioners don’t like the idea of every neighborhood acting on its own behalf. They fear the cost of converting will scare off some neighborhoods and result in some streets and neighborhoods with above-ground wires and some with underground wires. But that condition already exists on Longboat today. What’s more, when you canvass the Key, you can see some neighborhoods and developments where underground lines may not make practical or economic sense — e.g. Twin Shores, Gulf Shore or St. Judes Drive. When developers and property owners created every neighborhood on the Key, they made choices — on lot sizes, street widths, curbs, sidwalks and utility lines. That’s the American way — freedom to choose, individual preferences. And that’s why Longboat Key has a wide variety of neighborhood styles. From a practical standpoint, allowing each neighborhood to set up its own taxing district for underground utility lines is and will be complex. But that is the right and fair way to go for every Longboater. Don’t force some to subsidize others. Don’t force some to pay who can’t afford or don’t want the added cost of underground lines. Every neighborhood should make its own individual choice.

Waging War 2. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men’s weapons will grow dull, and their ardor will be damped. 3. Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain. 4. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue. 5. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been been associated with long delays. 6. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare. 7. It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war who can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on. 10. In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns. Barack Obama is too arrogant and intractable to be teachable or to admit that he is wrong. But for the sake of Americans and the world, he could use a transfusion of the wisdom of Sun Tzu and “The Art of War.” — MW

CO NV E RSAT IO N WITH MICHAEL SAUNDERS How has Longboat Key impacted your life? I grew up on the Key and got to know the barrier islands like the back of my palm. My 40-yearold company’s roots started with waterfront real estate, and my knowledge of these islands is a big part of the company’s success.

M

ichael Saunders, the woman whose local real estate empire surpassed $2 billion in sales last year, grew up barefoot on the north end of Longboat Key, catching fish and cracking stone crab claws before the Longboat Pass Bridge was built. Saunders, 73, reflects on the island that celebrated its 60th anniversary over the weekend and how her knowledge of the barrier islands helped her create Michael Saunders & Co. 40 years ago.

Describe growing up on Longboat Key. We learned a reverence for Longboat Key’s nature and the environment. I learned to swim before I learned to walk. I could drive a boat better than I could drive a car. I can throw a cast net better than I can dance. My childhood was pure magic. I fished, I learned how to break a claw, and I learned how to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Our entertainment was looking at the clouds, finding animal shapes, collecting rocks and shells and painting shells. We had no television and no radio. We would fish from the screened porch with a hole in the screen to keep the mosquitoes away. My parents would read aloud books in the cottage at night, or we would play cards, Scrabble or charades. I remember more details of that simple life than I can of my last trip to Paris because they were the most lasting impressions. What was Longboat Key like 60 years ago? It was a time when life was sim-

ple. We moved out here because of that simplicity. All of the Village children learned to fish on the town dock. Gulf of Mexico Drive was a two-lane shell road with pine needles all over it. I learned to drive a stick shift on Gulf of Mexico Drive in the middle of the day because it was so sleepy back then. The south end was still a jungle. There was a grocery store in the Village that my sister and I would visit to buy milk by taking the boat to the town dock. How did the north end change when the Longboat Pass bridge was completed in 1958? It was a whole new world for us. It allowed us to help make my father’s dream of opening a marina a reality. We had to have the boats ready for the first fishermen at sunrise and get the rental fishing poles oiled and ready for those who would rent them. My sister and I were the chief hamburger cooks, and my mother made her secret sauce that I still can’t recreate. Our marina was the place to buy a burger. We would get orders for 30 to 40 burgers at a time and cook them in our bathing suits. My sister and I put the hamburgers on the grill, ran down to the dock, jumped in the pass and then ran back to flip the burgers. It was our flawless system of cooking the best burgers in town. What hasn’t changed about real estate buyers on Longboat Key in the last 60 years? Buyers ultimately still come here because of the beauty of the island. The reason for wanting to be here hasn’t changed. Wanting a cottage on the beach 60 years ago today still has the same kind of intrinsic yearning for a place to get away and a place of beauty. How does a former Manatee High School teacher and a former Sarasota probation and parole officer form a real estate company that did $2 billion in sales last year? I believe buying real estate or selling is one of the most important decisions you can make. I felt I could bring higher standards. Real estate offices in the 1970s were like the Wild West and had a hodgepodge of mismatched chairs with grumpy agents smoking behind them. It’s not the way to make a first impression. I determined I should focus on waterfront property because I love it and understood if you could afford it, you want to live on the water. I got my real estate license in 1972 and started the company in 1976 in a 1,000-square-foot space on St. Armands Circle. My mother was an artist, and I borrowed an easel to display my listings and some of her furniture. I had the only real estate office in the area that looked like an art gallery. It lured people in immediately.

We did $12 million in business in 1976, which meant I could pay my bills. Were there any hurdles along the way to your success? Oh, yes. I always wanted to be a lawyer. I got a full scholarship to attend the University of Florida but needed a fellowship, too, because we had no money. I was the only female invited for fellowship interviews, and when I wasn’t being interviewed and inquired about when I would be called, they apologized and told me they only gave fellowships to men and only invited me because my name implied I was a man. Later when I needed a $5,000 bank loan to start the real estate company, I was turned down because I was a woman. I had to get a male friend to co-sign for me. It was the last time I needed a man’s help for anything. The bank is no longer there, and I am. My father always said to dream the impossible dreams but warned me I would pay the price to make them come true. I always believed I could do anything because of that advice. Is there a bubble on the horizon of the current real estate market? Absolutely not. That’s not to say there might not be a bubble in Miami. But here, we have low inventory and high demand. We have more stringent lending practices in place to avoid what happened the last time.

The second annual Longboat Key Veterans Day parade and celebration was an outstanding success, despite an event which was not on the program. The parade started close to the scheduled 2:30 p.m. with veterans forming into groups based on the eras in which they had served. Mine was the Korean War group. In front of the parade was the Sarasota High School marching band playing patriotic selections. As the groups proceeded down Bay Isles Road, family members and other interested participants waved flags and cheered for the vets, some of whom rode in convertible autos with volunteers. Several vets, primarily from World War II were in wheelchairs. At the foot of Bay Isles is the Temple Beth Israel synagogue, which had kindly volunteered as the venue for the post-parade program. The vets and other participants entered the synagogue and filled the spacious temple.

The emcee for the program was Carol Erker, president of the Rotary Club of Longboat Key, which sponsored the event. The program had barely started when the unplanned event struck: a complete power outage. Carol took it in stride, huddled with her team and proceeded with a neatly improvised plan, which was aided by flashlight and some sort of device which from the rear looked like candlelight. Several vets spoke of their experiences, and special honor was accorded to the grand marshals for the event: three women World War II Women’s Army Corps veterans who all lived on Longboat Key but had met for the first time at the 2014 event. The power returned just as the program concluded, and the group enjoyed a nice buffet of food and beverages. I would estimate the veterans who marched at around 150 and (at least 200 non-vet participants). The Rotary Club of LBK is to be congratulated and thanked for a job well done.

Introducing

Sarasota County Imagination Library & Children’s Literacy Endowment It’s a fact: The most significant factor influencing success in school is when parents and grandparents read to their infants, toddlers and preschoolers. At the Library Foundation for Sarasota County, we are committed to placing more books into the hands of the county’s neediest children. Starting Nov. 12, the Foundation will launch its first-ever campaign to raise $500,000 to fully fund the Children’s Literacy Endowment and assure the growth and success of the Sarasota County Imagination Library. Here is our story: Created in 2009, the Imagination Library is a partner with the internationally acclaimed Dolly Parton Imagination Library, founded by the renowned singer. Since 1996, Parton’s Imagination Library has provided

more than 750,000 children in the U.S. Canada, United Kingdom and Australia with a book a month from birth to 5 years. The Sarasota County Imagination Library has placed more than 100,000 books into the hands of 3,500 Sarasota County children whose need for early literacy skills is the greatest. How we did it: After an initial grant by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Library Foundation assumed financial responsibility for the program. To ensure current children enrolled completed their five years, we raised more than $75,000 from local foundations and individuals. Now we turn to the community for help. Our new goal: The Library Foundation Board has

committed to raising $500,000 by Dec. 31, 2016, for the Children’s Literacy Endowment. This will allow us to enroll more children into the Imagination Library or other early literacy programs — and bring the joy of reading to more children each year in Sarasota County.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Join our efforts to secure future children’s literacy programs like the Imagination Library. Help us raise $500,000 by Dec. 31, 2016. To contribute: • By check: Payable to the Library Foundation for Sarasota County; Box 2526, Sarasota, Fla. 34236. • By credit card: Call 94 1-228-6274. •Online: sarasotalibraryf oundation.org. (Contributions are tax-de ductible.)

Your town

You don’t look a day older than Longboat

FROM PAGE 1A

When Longboat Key turned 60 Nov. 14, two Longboat figures were also celebrating birthdays: Town Manager Dave Bullock and Planning and Zoning Board member B.J. Bishop, both of whom celebrated at Bayfront Park. “The only unfortunate thing is my birthday was five years before the town,” Bullock, 65, said. “It’s pretty cool we share the same birthday. It was fate. I was meant to be here.” “We left before the fireworks were supposed to start because I was freezing to death,” Bishop, 64, said. “I made the mistake of telling my kids in Virginia that we had to leave because it was too cold at 64 degrees.”

The fashion show will include both local celebrities and models from J.McLaughlin. The store will also sell items at the show, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Garden Club. New this year will be six local celebrities acting as bartenders for the night, including Mayor Jack Duncan. A record 16 to 18 restaurants will also participate. “We’re kicking it up a notch,” Phillips said. “It’s our fifth year, and it will be bigger and better than ever before.”

(Fireworks were canceled due to heavy winds.) Bullock took his boat to the celebration and spent the night out on the water. “I thought the festivities were pretty cool. It showed a lot of people getting together having fun,” Bullock said. “We need to think about doing it more often.”

Meet Longboat’s newest firefighter Watch out, Longboat Key: Liam James Webster is here to fight your fires. The 2-year-old is the grandson of Mayor “PaPa” Jack and Debbie Duncan and recently “applied” to the Longboat Key Fire Rescue with help from his grandfather,

who passed along his qualifications to Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi. “We have your application and will be processing it in a couple months,” Dezzi wrote in an email exchange with Mayor Duncan. “Please bring your bunker gear with you because we have difficulties getting your size.”

Patriotism on parade

M

ore than 130 veterans celebrated Veterans Day Nov. 11, with a quarter-mile parade on Bay Isles Road. The parade, organized by the Rotary Club of Longboat Key, featured veterans from every military branch and era of service and was followed by an honor ceremony at Temple Beth Israel. Parade grand marshals were Evelyn Fresch, Francey O’Brien and Shirley Beachum, who served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II and met at last year’s parade. “It’s really fun to feel so special,” Fresch said. “I never knew what it was like to be a celebrity. It’s been great.” — KRISTEN HERHOLD

The 2016 general election is less than a year away, and local Democrats are preparing. “We’re in campaign mode now,” said U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-South Carolina, assistant Democratic leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. “Our goal is to convince people we’ll be in better hands with a Democrat leading us.” Clyburn spoke to more than 200 guests at the Longboat Key Democratic Club’s luncheon Nov. 10, at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Dining Room. He spoke of the upcoming election and the economy. “The Obama administration has done a great job of getting jobs back on track,” he said. “We’re at the lowest unemployment rate

since 2007. The record is good, but you’d be less than honest if you say everybody is recovered from this because not everyone has. Our challenge now is to make this an economy that works for everyone.” Speaking a day before Veterans Day, he also showed his appreciation for those who have served. “They’ve made so many sacrifices for us and our country, and it’s a very important day,” Clyburn said. Clyburn has served South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District since 1993 and was the House majority whip from 2007 to 2011. He has been House assistant Democratic leader since 2011 and is currently the third-ranking House Democrat behind Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer.
