The University Park Women’s Club received a firsthand look at the struggles caused by blindness during a tour of Southeastern Guide Dogs’ 33-acre campus in Palmetto. Ambassador handler Beth Glenn and her dog, DiPaolo, gave the group a comprehensive overview of the program, while trainers worked with club members, taking them on a blindfolded walk. Club members Irene Jerue and
Maureen Ryan organized the visit, largely because of their love of dogs. However, they also wanted to learn more about Southeastern’s program and renovations of the facility. Southeastern Guide Dogs, founded in 1972, is internationally accredited. It receives no government funding and currently serves more than 450 guide dog school graduates. It places more than 100 dogs with the visually impaired and veterans, at no charge, each year. For information, contact guidedogs.org.
