Holly Carpenter, keeping it Irish
The beautiful former Miss Ireland Holly Carpenter has once again teamed up with leading Irish Skincare brand Green Angel to front their new beauty campaign. Mary Mitchell Co-Founder of Green Angel says, ‘it was vital that we chose the right person to front our campaign. After working with Holly on a number of occasions I felt she had the perfect look; she has a natural beauty and timeless features. It helped that Holly was already a fan of Green Angel products. She had been an avid user of our Body Smoothers & Moisturisers for some time and happy to endorse a product she believed in. Holly says ‘Both my Mam & I use Green Angel Skincare, we love the range. I was more than happy to front the new campaign as I feel it’s important to support Irish products. The range is fantastic; the natural Seaweed & Essential Oils are perfect for my skin.

GetGlam How to get dazzling hair and makeup for the Christmas party season.
By Niamh O‘Reilly
There’s no denying it any longer, glam season is upon us ladies! You’ll more than likely have a couple of festive soirees to attend. Maybe a work Christmas party and then maybe a girlie night out with your friends, so it’s important to look your best and so I asked the best in the business for their top tips on how to get totally glammed up from top to toe this festive season.
Paul Hession is the hair guru behind the successful Hession hairdressing in Clontarf and Malahide, and a TV regular on the couches of Ireland AM and Off the Rails. He fills us in on glamorous curls which are set to dazzle this festive season. . ‘This hairstyle is great as it works on all hair types as long as hair is below-shoulder length. To create the look at home start by using a nourishing shampoo and conditioner such as Kerastasé Bain Chroma Captive Shampoo (€20.50) Lait Chroma Reflect Rinse-Out Milk (€27.50). These long lasting products work to provide nourishment, add depth and radiate shine.’ ‘Next blow dry your hair until is 80 per cent dry, using a large round brush. Beginning with sections at the front of the head and working towards the back pin curl your hair by wrapping two inch sections of hair around your fingers to form a curl. Remove your fingers and pin the curl to you head using hair clips. Blast your hair for a couple of minutes to heat the pin curls. Leave to set for as long as possible. Finally remove grips and shake hair out. Backcomb your hair at the roots and smooth out the curls and add a touch of hairspray such as L’Oreal Elnett Satin Supreme Hold Hairspray to keep the curls in place.’ Jennifer Butler and Jennifer O’Brien are the two successful ladies behind the Vanity Rooms and share their inside tips on how to get super glammed up in a flash. ‘It’s party season, be prepared girls! As we always say here at Vanity Rooms, it’s all about looking good on the outside, so you feel fab on the inside! We know that once you have beautifully groomed brows, long glossy lashes, are perfectly tanned and have the nails painted, you’ll feel a million dollars.’ 12

‘Being prepared for that Christmas party can take a bit of time, but is well worth it! Especially if you’re sitting in work all year daydreaming about the hunk across the office...... ‘We’ve all done “lazy beautifying”, let’s face it , sometimes you’re not in the mood to tan your entire body. But if there is a chance of that sequin dress coming off to reveal the spanx, they will look a lot better on a bronzed, fuzz free bod! If you want to do this properly, you’ll need to put time aside on two days to do it: Day 1 : Waxing, Brows & lashes. Day 2: Tan & Nails So ladies when you’re under that mistletoe, fluttering your lashes at Mr. Dreamy, you’ll be glad there are no white hairy bits hiding! And remember, if you go for Gel Polish on the nails, Novalashes and probrowz, these will all last week’s so you’ll still be gorgeous and glam for Christmas Day!’ Wayne Lloyd, the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2014 winner, of Wayne Lloyd Hair, Bandon. Co. Cork talks us through this stunning plait look, ideal for a festive occasion. ‘The textured braid is a quick and easy hairstyle if you’re rushing to a party from the office. By adding a small amount of volume to the front of the hair this adds glamour to this already quite girly style. There’s no need to be too structured with this look, it’s all about using texture. Using your hands to place your hair in a low style pony, add a little fixing serum or spray to your hands and braid. Once done use both hands to expand the braid, adding as much texture as you like or want. Finish with a spray of L’Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray.’ Wellaflex Silvikrin Style Director Michael Douglas has been a hairdresser for 23 years and has had clients that have included everyone from Michael Caine and Kate Moss to Danni Minogue and Davina McCall. Here he talks us through the in vogue ‘top knot.’ ‘Apply Wellaflex Heat Creations Blow Dry Spray to damp hair then blow dry with a large brush to ensure that hair is soft with lots of movement Scrape hair into a high ponytail and secure with a band. Backcomb sections of the ponytail to create the height and then pin these sections into the base of the pony tail with hair pins – once complete mist all over with Wellaflex Silvikrin Heat Creations Hairspray to hold Wrap hair around the ponytail then secure with pins; leave some strands of hair to hang loose for a sassy look chic but effortless.’ Max Factor makeup artist Lyndsay Cavanagh, who’s worked with everyone from Hollywood icon Maureen O’Hara to former Miss World Rosanna Davison explains how to get that much coveted but often failed smokey eyed look. ‘To achieve a smokey eye look, begin by subtly enhancing your eyes and apply a light coloured shadow from lash line to brow bone. Use a dampened angled liner brush to pat on eyeshadow, cream or a gel liner close to the lashes. Gradually build up the desired line, making sure to check the symmetry between both eyes. Imagine a ruler resting at the outer corner of your eye and traveling to the end of your eyebrow. This will act as a guide to the direction in which to draw your eyeliner flick. Draw a line above the imaginary ruler as long as you choose. Create a third edge to the triangle by joining the tip of the flick back into the lash line. º This look works as well with the dramatic addition of a strong red lip as it does with a neutral glossy shade.’

Tom Ford knows better then anyone that sex sells. His erotic, colourful and printed designs really had a Fifty Shades of Grey feel to them. We don’t know if we’d actually wear these sexy ensembles but you got to give the man credit where its due. If there was any way to promote your collection, Tom Ford certainly knows how to do it.

NYFW SS 2015 Nails by CND Libertine’s Spring/Summer 2015 Fashion Show at Lincoln Center in New York City
“Working with CND this season has been a jangly, sparkling experience,” said Libertine designer Johnson Hartig. “When we first sat down to talk concepts with Jan and the team I expected to have one uniform nail look across the board. It was fantastic when they came back with three concepts that I really loved. The nails were the exclamation point for the collection. CND brought their unparalleled nail artistry to the table and completely nailed it…if you’ll pardon the pun.” Photographs courtesy of CND 24

“We are absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with Libertine this season,” said CND Co-founder and Style Director Jan Arnold. ”The moment I walked into the design studio, I knew we were all set up for success. Every piece of clothing was an exceptional work of art with a playful and artistic perspective – and our team designed the most spectacular nails to finish off the looks!”
The nails presented at the Libertine show were a brilliant counterpart to the embellished and perfectly deconstructed pieces of clothing that walked down the runway. The handmade works of art, created by the elite artists of the CND Design Lab Team, were constructed on medium length, almond shaped nails, painted with VINYLUX® Weekly Polish and tricked out with unconventional materials like seed bead tassels and crystals. Some models sported jewel-encrusted lettering that spelled out “LIBERTINE!” across both hands, while other models showcased a unique look on each fingertip, including a hand-sculpted skull with a moveable jaw and accented with a gold tooth, created entirely from CND® Liquid & Powder.

THE BLONDES
“CND’s nail designs blow our minds more and more every season,” said The Blonds designer David Blond. “Jan and team continue to look well beyond the nails themselves and find ways to accessorize our designs to complete the full story on the runway. They continue to amaze us with their creativity and ability to tap into our overall vision!”

Opening Ceremony Spring/Summer 2015 Nails by CND The nails presented at the Opening Ceremony show were a collaborative effort between the elite artists of the CND Design Lab Team, Opening Ceremony and their design consultant, celebrity nail artist Naomi Yasuda. The handmade works of art were created using VINYLUX® Weekly Polish and CND® Additives in greens and pinks inspired by CND’s Spring 2015 color collection, as well as black, for three unique hues of the same pixelated water prints.
“The nails that CND designed, in collaboration with Naomi Yasuda, for us this season were the perfect finishing touch to our overall story,” said Opening Ceremony designer Humberto Leon. “We wanted this show to transport the audience to that moment when you’re lying by the pool staring at the sun and you fade into a half-sleep fantasy world where everything becomes blurry and dreamlike.”

How to create wide eyed, flawless lifting makeup application
TIP
Structure is very important for your makeup application. You must add structure and shape to your face through your contour and highlight, eyebrows, eyeshadow and lips
by Jade Kirwan Jade Kirwan Make up
E R O EF
B
R
E T F A
Apply a base, concealing all blemishes and spots giving a flawless base to work with. When applying your blusher it should always be applied up your temple to lift your face. When shaping your eyebrows I find it best to use eyeshadows with a small thin angled brush to create brush strokes to appear as hairs. Your eye shadow also should lift your eyes by being smoked up rather than down as that would make you eye appear to droop. Applying liner to your top eye lids helps to shape your eyes and make them stand out and pop. Flick liner must always flick up and not directly out as we must always lift the eyes to appear wide eyed. Adding white eye pencil to your water line will also help your eyes to appear larger. As well as highlighting your inner eye and brow bone. Lining your lip with the appropriate lip liner colour is very important as it defines the lip shape. It also helps to keep your lipstick in place longer as it stops lipstick “bleeding or moving. Setting powder is key to a flawless matte makeup application 30

Nail’d It is a new televised Nail Art competition devised to give Nail Techs the opportunity to make substantial money by taking part in televised contests. The American nail industry is struggling to keep up with its European colleagues so it is hoped that the TV show will create an interest in the industry for artistic people, who will then see Nail Art as a good way to make a living. “Nail’d It” pits 18 of the best up-and-coming nail artists against one another as they claw their way to the top to claim a life-changing grand prize of $100,000! In each episode, the contestants will face-off by crafting flawless flat paint designs and over-the-top 3D masterpieces using everything from lacquers, gels and acrylics to embellishments and unorthodox materials. The winners and runners up from the first six episodes will compete in a high-stakes four-part finale until only one artist is left standing to win the grand prize and the opportunity to have their designs featured in a cover story for Nail It! magazine. Pushed beyond their creative limits, the contestants will be critiqued by a rotating panel of 4 judges, including industry icon and leading expert on trends, Jan Arnold, CND’s Co-Founder and Style Director; Top “Man”-icurist, Tom Bachik, who polishes the nails of celebrities from red carpets events to sold out arenas; expert nail artist and celebrity manicurist, Terrance Terry, known as the “Nail Villian” for his uncensored personality and ability to push the envelope; and distinguished judge of nail art competitions worldwide, Elaine T. Watson, Cuccio International’s VP of Marketing and Sales and Global Education Director. In addition, Nail It! magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Stephanie Yaggy Lavery, and People Style Watch’s Beauty Director, Holly Carter, will serve as guest judges during the season. The hosts name is Adrienne Bailon who would be best known for her role in Cheetah Girls. She also has her own nail blog - Fingertip Fetish. "Nails are the ultimate fashion accessory and I couldn't be more excited to host 'Nail’d It,'" said Bailon."I've always been obsessed with nail art and I can’t wait for everyone to see the creativity, passion and talent of these 18 artists. They are going to be blown away!" Each week there are 3 contestants taking part in two different competitions. The first competition takes part in a set that looks like a salon and takes 1 1 ½ hours to complete a set of nails following specific parameters. A winner is picked and that winner has an advantage going into the second competition, which is an elimination challenge. The Elimination challenge can take anything from 6 - 10 hours to complete and they all work at a table together. At some point in the elimination challenge work stops, Adrienne comes out and tells them what the advantage for the first round winner is going to be. While they are working, the judges take turns to do a check in and see how they are getting on and which direction they are taking their art. At the 32
NO.2 ( 1 2/2 014)
end of the elimination (they work on tips, not models), they have a limited time to apply the tips to the model and then they are judged. The winner goes into the finale and 2nd place goes to the semifinal and one person is eliminated. Each episode has its own theme, One of them was biker chicks when they had bikes on the set with the girls and each bike was very different. Another theme they used was girls with tattoos. Elaine Watson says, ‘I am no Simon Cowell, so it was hard at first being honest and critiquing the contestants to their faces. I would just give them my honest opinion and show them where they had gone wrong. I was not all nicey nicey but I also wasn’t really horrible either. If I didn’t like what they had done I would show them what was wrong with their art, and then they would usually agree with me. ‘I really think this show will change the way people look at the Nail Industry. The Nail Industry is booming right now, which all started with the soak off gel nails 3-4 years ago. People who had never gone to a salon came in for soak off jobs. Anyone who is thinking of getting into the industry should do it now, because it is going to explode!’ Lysa Comfort, who was involved in the show’s creation, hopes that the show will snowball to the point where big TV networks become interested in televising more nail competitions. She also hopes that as a result of the show, people will see nail technicians as more than just people who do nails, and more as nail artists. She says, ‘It is not as easy as people think. Hopefully there will be people who will see the show and see the medium that nail artists use - gel, acrylic, etc. for doing 3D work and will want to try to do it themselves and eventually this will create a whole new art form. Possibly what we know as ‘Fantasy’ will come off the nail and be an art form in its own right, like a 3D fantasy style.’ The show is being televised in the States every Tuesday night from 7th October and episodes can be watched on YouTube.

PRODUCT REVIEW VINYLUX
CHIFFON TWIRL & 7 DAY TOPCOAT
V
inylux Chiffon Twirl dries very fast in only 3-4 minutes. The metalic colour comes out lighter then expected when applied. The brush is thin and therefor it applies evenly and cleanly to the nail. The coats do come out quite light, so if you want a darker colour, I’d recommend applying a third coat. Vinylux top coat applies very nicely to the nail, the polish is thick and applies evenly and smoothly over vinylux’s nail polish. It dries very fast in about 3 minutes. The polish lasts up to 36 hours.

File nails, push cuticles back and apply a base coat. Then apply 1 coat of Vinylux Chffon Twirl polish to the nails.

Lastly, apply top coat to the nails. Wait approx 3 minutes for nails to dry fully.

NAIL STAMPING
1 4
Apply a generous amount of MoYou special nail polish to the nail plate.
2
Lean the scraper at a 45 degree angle over the design and scrape the excess polish off the plate.
Using a similar rolling motion as in step 3, stamp the design onto the nail with a quick firm roll.
3 5
MOYOU nail stamping kit comes packed with 3 special nail polishes (red, black, white), a stamp, a scraper and 3 nail plates. I was really excited about using the stamping kit. However, I found that when I went to stamp the nail design onto the ©mix.tn.com nail, the full print didn’t always stamp. The kit can be hard to use. I’d recommend testing out a few prints first on paper until you get the hang of it. The technique is the hardest part. If you don’t scrape the scraper at the right angle or if you don’t stamp on the nail in the right direction, then the design won’t come out properly on the nail. So be sure the practise first. The kit is ideal for anyone who has a shakey hand or can’t do nail art with a brush.
Straight away after using the scraper, use the stamp with a 3 step rolling motion to apply the polish to the stamp. See pictures above. Once the design is stamped, apply a top coat to finish. If you find that the design doen’t come out fully then use a brush and black polish to complete the design fully.

PROVOC GEL EYELINER - BLACK Academy Provocs Gel Eyeliner applies really nicely to the eye. The pencil is very soft, so be sure to use an eyeliner brush to smooth out the pencil once its applied to the eye. The gel eyeliner lasts up to 8 hours, which is great if you are going out. I’ve never had to re-apply the eyeliner . throughout the day which is just so great! Provoc gel eyeliners and lipliners are without a doubt worth buying. At only £5 a go how can it not be worth it? Apply the pencil above and below the eyes evenly. Use a liner brush to even out the lines.

My Top Tips Eyes. My top tip on eyes is eyeliner on the tightline, not so well known but a great tip to make your eyelashes look fuller and really define your eyes. This technique is practically invisible but so effective. Take your eyeliner, as long as it’s not a liquid eyeliner, and a eyeliner brush - either angled or flat which ever you prefer - and apply it to the tightline, which is the waterline area underneath the top lashes. I do this all the time and love the difference it makes to my eyes. I use the Inglot gel liner, I find it the best, and it lasts all day long.

Hair. My top tip on hair is to only wash your hair every 3 to 4 days. Washing your hair everyday causes it to dry out and become rough and brittle. Over washing can make your scalp think that it needs to produce more sebum, causing it to ultimately become oilier making you think you need to wash it more. So avoid this cycle by simply only washing your hair every 3 to 4 days. I know this is hard and may feel like a long time to go without washing your hair but the longer you persevere the less oil will build up which means you won’t feel like you have to or need to wash your hair everyday.
My Top Products Top 3 Highlighters. Highlighters can be over used but done right, they can finish off a look very nicely. • • •
Sleek Contour Palette €7.49. This is a lovely highlighter nice golden tones. I use this when I have a full face of makeup for a golden bronzed look. MUA Undress Your Skin highlighter €3.85. I love this highlighter the most. It’s so pretty, it just shines under the lights and has a lovely pinky tone. Urban Decay Flushed Palette €29. This highlighter is a really natural one. It’s for everyday use and has a lovely light shine to it.
Top 5 favourite makeup products that I use regularly. I would highly recommend all of these products: • • • • •
Inglot Pressed Powder. I use Shade 57, a light shade which matches my skin, to set my foundation, and Shade 52, a dark shade, to contour and bronze. These powders are so soft and feel like velvet on the skin, they are my favourite powders to use and cost €11. MUA Blusher. These are so cheap but great quality, they blend well and have excellent pigment. What more can you ask for from a blusher? I have all 6 shades, but the ones I use most are Marshmallow and Bubble Gum. They cost just €1.30. Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation, in shade Ivory Nude 1n1. As you all know I love this foundation. Its full coverage matte and leaves your skin looking flawless. It costs €37. Inglot Eye Shadows. Well now, I think everyone that knows me knows I love Inglot as a brand, but their shadows really are the best you can get on the market. They are highly pigmented, so blendable and a pleasure to work with. At just €6 you really can’t go wrong. MAC Lipsticks. I don’t think it’s just me that loves MAC lipsticks. They are so popular, last most of the day, great pigment and so light on the lips you wouldn’t even know you had lipstick on. They cost €19.
My Reviews
Provoc Manikit is a hand glove that contants rich emollient moisture treatments, rose flower, shea butter, collagen and vitamin E which helps treat rough, dry and chapped hands and deeply penetrate with nutrients and moisturise immediately.
Each Manikit pack contains one set of hand gloves which is for one use only and needs to be used once opened or they will dry out. Provoc Manikits are also cruelty free. How to use: 1. Wash and disinfect hands, 2. Remove any nail polish from first hand 3. File and shape your nails 4. Put the glove on one hand 5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 on second hand 6. Remove precut finger tips after 5 to 10 minutes 7. Work on manicure service 8. Remove glove and massage remaining cream into hand 9. Degrease the nails before painting 10. Repeat steps 6 to 9 on second hand I had the gloves on for about 25 to 30 minutes in total, they smell so nice and left my hands feeling so soft and looking so healthy afterwards. I would recommend this to everyone and in my opinion it is a beautiful addition to a manicure. Provoc also have a pedikit which, after been so impressed with the Manikit, I will definitely be buying.
O.P.I Nail Lacquer. I have been given this beauiful navy blue shade “Yoga-ta get this blue!” to review and I have to say I’m very impressed. Being a nail artist I have tried nearly every brand of nail polish out there and O.P.I is one I always come back to. You get a lot of product for your money with it being a 15ml bottle and the pigmentation is amazing. You could get away with just one coat but I always use two coats out of habit. It dries super quick, doesn’t stain your nails and lasted me around 7 days. How to apply: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Use a dotting tool and white polish to add small dots on your nails (this is for your snow!)

Add a bit of white to your tips using a dotting tool. This doesn’t need to be straight as it is the snow on the floor.

Use a dotting tool to draw the body of your snowman. I’ve decided to put a snowman on two nails, but you could just do the one, or even one on every nail.

Use a nail art pen, or a dotting tool to add twigs on the arm of your snowman.

o they don’t! There is no reason to believe that nails need to “breathe”. Nails aren’t alive and don’t have lungs nor do they have any ability to absorb air into the nail plate. This myth makes no sense on many levels! In short, nails do NOT require an external air supply and do not need to breathe or exhale. 100% of the oxygen needed by the nail matrix to create a new nail plate comes from the blood stream and 0% comes from the outside world. Everything the nail plate needs to be properly grow and function is delivered and/or removed by the blood flow to the matric area and nail bed.. The matrix is where the nail plate is created from nutrients which can only be delivered by the blood stream. Neither “air” nor “nutrients” can be absorbed or “fed” to the nail plate from any external source. Information provided by Doug Schoon, Scientific Expert

Moisturize your hands regularly. Remember, nail varnish remover is very drying to the nails, and if you are taking your polish off a lot, there’s a risk that the skin around your nails will dry out and start looking tatty. I use Soap & Glory Hand Food to moisturize my hands. Apply Beauty Bay Cuticle Oil regularly around my cuticles to keep them looking nice.

THIN LAYERS Apply your polish in thin layers, and try to do just three strokes on each nail, one down the middle, one down one side, and one down the other. If you put too thick a coat of polish on your nails, it’s likely that it won’t dry properly, or you may get bubbles in it. If you keep going over the same area, the polish will drag and again, it won’t look smooth and neat.

TIDY UP! It’s all about the presentation. If you are a bit of a messy painter, worry not! But do clean up any polish you get over your fingers afterwards; nothing ruins a lovely manicure more than not tidying it up. I always clean off stray bits of polish from my fingers with a cotton bud dipped in polish remover. If you are worried about perhaps making a mess of your manicure doing this, you can wait until it’s all fully dried out and jump in the bath/ shower – once your hands have softened up in the warm water you can peel off and stray bits of polish on your fingers.

How to clean your makeup brushes by Jade Kirwan
It is very important to wash your brushes if you want a flawless finish makeup application. Otherwise old makeup can be mixed through your brush and cause blotting of your makeup and marks through your foundation.
1.
Babyoil (your new best friend) will strip any makeup pigment from your brushes, leaving them looking brand new - no stains, no makeup residue.
2.
Baby shampoo (an essential) washes your brushes taking out any makeup, baby oil, and leaving a fabulous smell. The reason for using baby shampoo is that it is kind to your brushes and not harsh, leaving them fluffy, soft and smelling great! 44
NO.2 ( 1 2/2 014)
3.
Damp your brushes with lukewarm water and pour some baby oil on your palm. Then rub the brush into your palm in circular motions. http://images.beautyandmakeupmatters.com/
4.
7.
Rinse thoroughly until no suds remain.
5.
Place the brush on the edge of a surface to dry, with the brush hairs end off the surface, otherwise the surface would cause the brush to sit in damp which is not good.
6.
9.
Do the same circular motions with baby shampoo, rinsing and repeating until the suds are clear of makeup.
Press tissue around the brush to squeeze the excess water from the brush.
It is essential to shape your brush now while damp. Shaping your brushes is every important to keep them in great condition and to stop hairs fraying.
8.
Let your brushes dry overnight.

ADIGYM
ENDURANCE
EXERCISE FORMULA Adigym Endurance Exercise Formulais a brand NEW treatment that enhances and produces the effects of endurance exercise.
A
digym Endurance Exercise Formulais is essentially a ‘muscle food’ fed to the muscles via the skin. This exercise formula does not claim to make over-weight people slim. It is claiming, however, to build muscle fibre faster to improve muscle tone and firmness and to reduce circumference of problem areas such as the thighs, tummy and upper arms. No one gets results with a personal trainer or from the gym if they eat too much, drink too much and don’t do some exercises in-between sessions. But for people who are a healthy weight, eat a fairly balanced diet, don’t drink to excess and do a bit of exercise, Adigym Endurance Exercise Formula will significantly improve muscle tone and firmness and reduce the circumference of problem areas such as the tummy, thighs and upper arms, as well as reduce fat storage. Adigym Endurance Exercise Formula, however, takes a lot of the hard graft out of getting a fitter and more toned looking physique. The formula gives results that would normally take a LOT more dedicated work in the gym or with a personal trainer. It contains a revolutionary active called actigym ™ that enhances the growth of type 1 muscle fibre, which are those gained from endurance exercise. The ingredient actigym ™ is a Bermudan marine plankton extract (Bacillus sp) that science proves enhances and speeds up the release of adiponectin, which is a specific protein that enhances the growth of type 1 muscle fibres. Type 1 muscle fibres are those gained from endurance exercise such as running, swimming, cycling and any other type of aerobic metabolic boosting exercise. Type 1 muscle fibres also help reduce fat uptake. Adiponectin is naturally produced by the body in response to endurance exercise. The more adiponectin that is produced, the more type 1 muscle fibre is produced. The more type 1 muscle fibre the more toned the body looks and the less fat that is absorbed.
NO.2 ( 1 2/2 014)
After the trial period the production level of adiponectin was increased by almost 68%, and a 70% increase in type 1 muscle fibre was achieved. The trial on 60 women aged 35-50 proved that Actigym ™ tightened skin tone of the abdominal area and reduced the perimeter of the waist (average loss of 3cm), upper thighs (average loss of 2.9cm) and upper arms (average loss of 2.4cm)and reduced overall body weight (average of 4kg loss), effectively re-sculpting areas of the body.* Adigym Endurance Exercise Formula is a completely natural cream containing 5% Actigym ™

Simple steps to the perfect makeup application by Jade Kirwan Makeup
1.
Apply pea size primer to skin. Conceal spots or blemishes. Apply foundation base. It’s best to use a concealer lighter than your foundation colour.
2.
Apply highlighter under your eyes, down your nose and on your chin. Apply contour under cheek bones, sides of nose and on sides of forehead. *Always remember “powder on powder, liquid on liquid” meaning use liquid contour and highlight as on a liquid base and once we powder the base is set and only powder products can be used after on the base.
3. Blend your contour and highlight into your base, then setting with your translucent setting powder. Contour 8n powder form using matte bronzer. Apply your base eyeshadow which is usually white ,this is so the colour of your eyeshadow is strong and not washed out.
4. Here I have applied my main eyeshadow colour (of your choice) yo my eyelid.
5. I have then blended and smoked out my eyeshadow very slightly to create the look I desire.
6. Add highlighter to the inner eye and brow bone. Filling in my eyebrows to add shape and structure to my face. Adding liquid flick liner to shape, and lift my eyes. And popping my look with red lipstick after lining my lip.
7. My makeup application coming together nicely, creating my makeup look. Adding my mascara and eyeliner.
8. Sleek high pony tail to finish the look and a darker lipstick.

Next using Provoc’s gel eyeliner number 66, apply as a base colour onto the eye lid and then blend with an eyeshadow smudging brush. Make sure to add number 66 to under the eyelid aswell. Using a thin eyeliner brush blend the eye pencil in. Blending eyeshadow more natural on the eye.
Now we are onto the fun part - COLOUR! For this step we are using Provoc eyeliner number 77. This green shade looks fab on the eye. Using the pencil draw a few green lines upwards on the corner of the eyelid as shown in the picture above. Then using an eyeshadow brush blend the green into to gold base eyeshadow. Don’t forget to apply the green under the eyes too to give that extra definition to the eye. N O. 2 (12/ 20 14)

4 Next its time to apply Provoc Eyeliner number 67. This magnetic coloured eyeliner will be used as a liner on the eye. Apply to the top and bottom of the eyes.
5
To darken the eyes a little more, we will apply Provoc Eyeliner number 90. Black will add that final definition to the eye to make your eyes pop! Apply to the top and bottom of the eye. Use cotton bud to clean up the black around the eye and make the line look smooth and thin.
6 Lastly we need to highlight under the eyebrow with a light Provoc colour, either white or the gold we used for the base of the eye. This will blend the eyeshadow once more to make it shine. Add some mascara to add the final touch to the eyes.

New Year’s Beauty Resolutions WORTH STICKING TO We’ve all been there, barely a minute after midnight on New Year’s Eve and we’re already declaring what amazing resolutions we’ll be persuing for the year ahead.
It might be anything from massive life changes like giving up smoking or joining a gym, to simply taking the stairs over the lift, but sadly for many of us we fall at the first hurdle and end up breaking those resolutions within the first couple of weeks. And it’s not hard to see why. January is undoubtedly the most depressing month of the year. We’ve all overdone it on several fronts; eaten far too well, had one or two more glasses of wine than we should, plus we’ve all got less in our pockets. So it’s no wonder that self-sacrificing resolutions full of denial and hardship don’t tend to work. But what if, instead of making outrageous resolutions you won’t possibly be able to stick with, you decided to set yourself some new resolutions that actually give you some pampering ‘me-time’ instead of going down the ‘sackcloth and ashes’ route? And what if these resolutions still made you feel like you’ve achieved something worthwhile? Well thankfully its not rocket science ladies! Here I’ve put together 5 top New Year’s Beauty Resolutions that you can stick to and won’t make you feel miserable... instead they should give you some extra pamper time and make you feel like you’ve achieved something in the process!

1
Drink More Water Okay so maybe this one is not the most pleasant, but it’s a really easy one to follow. Just bring a bottle of water to work every day and try and take sips from it throughout your day. If you find it empty then keep filling it up. Stick to it and you’ll be surprised how much water you’re drinking without feeling like you’re force-feeing the old ‘8 glasses of water a day’ regime down your gullet. Your skin will thank you for it! Its also great for flushing out winter toxins from the body too and if you’re on a diet, it’s a good way to fill up your tummy instead of snacking.
2
Treat Yourself If you happen to have around €15 burning a hole in your wallet after the festive season, then a month’s subscription to Glossybox is a great way to treat yourself to some must have beauty products that will help the ‘January Blues’ pass in a flash. If you’ve never heard of it, Glossybox is a fab beauty box with five deluxe beauty miniatures inside which are delivered straight to your door each month. The content and theme of the boxes are a surprise, plus the value of the products you receive are always worth more than you have paid for.
3
Make time for your nails Now this is a fun one. Allot ten minutes or so just before you go to bed for your nails. Keep a mini bag of kit by the bed and have a proper nail scissors, cuticle oil or balm, nail file, hand cream and nail strengthener in it. Look at those ten minutes as ‘me-time’ and give your hands a total mini pamper session. You don’t have to spend ages on it, but a little bit of maintenance each night will have your hands and nails looking superb by the end of the month.
4
Invest in a CC or BB Cream It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and for under €30 you can begin a daily routine that has multi benefits for your skin. We’ve been bombarded with CC and BB creams recently and the good news is that these multi taskers do a variety of things for your skin all in one pack, meaning you have to spend less time and money on keeping your skin glowing. January always seems to be the worst skin month for many of us, with cold weather and detoxing from the festive excesses, it can leave skin with breakouts, or looking dry and tired. Elizabeth Arden’s BB Cream at €28 is a great all-in-one skin treat. It hydrates, brightens, primes and protects the skin, plus it’s tinted so you can even use it as foundation. Or if you’re of the CC persuasion then try Irish brand Karora’s CC Cream, €24.99 that corrects your skin tone while providing long lasting hydration thanks to its green tea leaf extract.
5
Give yourself a mini facial massage once a week While it’s lovely to treat yourself with a snazzy massage from a spa or salon, getting into a routine of home facial massage is a great way to get skin glowing, not to mention the anti-age benefits. The face is full of muscles and like any muscles if you want them to stay strong (AKA not saggy!) then you need to exercise them. A lot of it is down to feel and our hands naturally go to pressure points such as the temples or between the nose. Massaging with your fingers for a few minutes gently on areas like this is a great way to get skin in shape while releasing natural pressure points.

Salon Review For Cliona Sweeny it has been a long way to fulfill the dream, but after all those years of hard work she can now says it was the best decision made, to open her own salon and training academy. Beautique Training Academy was set up in Cork City in April of last year by Cliona Sweeney who has been in the beauty industry for 14 years. After qualifying as a beauty therapist her love of nails inspired her to follow in this direction and she worked in the first nail bar in Cork City and was the first nail technician to open a nail bar in a hair salon in Cork. After travelling for many courses, Cliona soon realised there was a need for a dedicated academy that could provide educational programmes to suit everyone’s needs; from beginners to experienced nail technicians and beauty therapists wanting to up skill and learn the newest techniques... and so the journey into her teaching career began. Now with 7 years teaching experience Cliona is a bachelor educator for Hand and Nail Harmony and teaches Gelish courses in her own academy, the salon shop academy and in Cork, Kerry and the Waterford areas. Cliona believes what sets her aside from other academies is the fact that she continues to work in a nail bar in Kopper hair studio in Glanmire, so is totally up to date with new trends and products within the industry and regularly partakes in new courses. Cliona was also awarded with the prestigious beauty award from RSVP ‘Best For Nail Training 2013’ and after entering her first nail competition placed 3rd in the ‘Spa Manicure’ category.

NUDENAILS
Nude nails were one of the hottest hues spotted on the SS15 runways. The eternally elegant shade ensured models oozed grace and effortless beauty as they sauntered down the catwalk. The designers leading the way for stripped back nails included Chanel, Felder Felder and Emilia Wickstead. The fuss free look that was spotted at Chanel was created using their very own polish, Le Vernis, in Ballerina, £18. Emilia Wickstead opted for a barely there shade using Eve Snow in Nudest, £14. The delicate hue is perfect for creating a carefree look while maintaining the illusion of low maintenance fingertips. Felder Felder chose to coat their leading ladies talons using Nailberry Nail Lacquer in Lait D’Amande, £13.50. The fresh shade was combined with natural nails that were simply buffed and shaped in line with the natural curve of the nail. MAC sent a barrage of models down the Ferretti, Blumarine and Pilotto AW15 runways with finger tips doused in a mixture of transparent beiges and glistening creams. Epitomise laid back glamour and pick the perfect nude for your skin tone. If you’re a fair skinned beauty - coat your claws in Cliniques A Different Nail Enamel for Sensitive Skins in Sweet Tooth, £12. If you have a warmer completion, tint your talons a deeper shade such as B. in innocent to ensure your nails blend in with your finger tips perfectly.

GLISTENINGGREEN Rich shades made an appearance over the runways too; exotic emeralds and tantalising teals saturated in gold shimmer transcended down the Sorapol’s SS15 catwalk. Illamasqua lead the beauty brigade at the show and took their nail art to the next level by drenching their models talons right up to the finger bone in Illamasqua’s latest shade Melange, £14.50. While painting outside our nail bed was once a mistake - Sarapol turned such blunders into a real show stopper. Saturating our claws and finger tips in glittering greens might not work so well in real life – but gently tinting our talons in the glittering shade can make for an eye catching look. The high street is alight with simmering shades of the captivating hue – Topshop has a dazzling array of vibrant greens with a hint of metallic blue such as Eclipse, £5. For a more muted manicure, Superdrug brand B. does a minty shade called Seamist, £4.99 which makes for a demure look. For added radiance – lace your painted talons in MAC Nail Transformations Studio Nail Lacquer in Green Pearl, £10. The innovative polish stylishly twists the look of your lacquer into a totally new shade.
JEWEL ENCRUSTED METALLICS Glitter, glamour and allure invaded the Ashish runway as a collection of gorgeous models trailed the catwalk with sensational silver claws. The talons were decorated with matching glitter and oversized gems in a rainbow of colours. Michelle Humphreys headed the nail art station behind the scenes and enraptured the claws of the catwalk in a holographic polish by high street favourite, Maybelline. She used the show stopping shades Watery Waste and Glitter-It, £2.99 each; once the lacquers had dried – she splashed random jewels onto the nail bed in exocentric bursts. The models each had a matching pedicure too, infused with sparkle and shimmer. Recreate the look with Andrea Fulerton Nail Boutique Crystal Nail Jewels, £7.99 – gently dot the gems onto wet nail polish with a steady hand. If this is too fiddly – pick up a pair of tweezers and delicately speckle sparkles over your nails. If you want a less chaotic look, touch your nails up with pearly silver such as GOSH in Stardust, £3.99. The soft silver has an iridescent finish that catches the light without being over powering. If you want to take the metallic look into a more gothic genre, douse your nails in Bio Sculpture’s cloudy hue Smothered with Minerals, £6.49 or envelope your finger tips in Michael Kors latest scorching shade in Seduction, £15.

8 Steps to Flawless Makeup
Looking good is very important to all of us women, but having the time to achieve this with work, kids, and life in general sometimes feels like a massive task so here I have broken it down into 8 simple steps to achieve flawless make up.
by Stephney Butler
1. Cleanse, tone and moisturise
5. Contour and Blush
Your first step should always be to cleanse tone and moisturise so that you have the perfect base to start with. Then use spf - one of the most important things for your skin - and let it soak into the face.
Always use a matte bronzer to contour your cheek bones and choose a colour that isn’t too dark for your skin - there is a fine line between beautiful contour and looking like you just have a line of dirt on your face. The secret is blending; make sure you blend the hash lines with a good blending brush. With blush it is important to remember less is more, you don’t want to over do it or you end up looking like a clown with big rosy cheeks, just apply a small amount on the apples of your cheeks and blend it backward to meet with the bronzer.
2. Primer and Concealer Apply your primer; using a good primer is the trick to your makeup lasting throughout the whole day. If you have any blemishes or redness use your concealer if not then don’t use concealer as you’re only adding product to your face that is not needed.
6. Brows Filling in your brows is arguably one of the most important features of your face, they are incredibly expressive, they draw attention to your eyes, and add dimension to your face. The trick to getting it right is to make sure the shade you use to fill them in isn’t too dark for your face and that you have a good angled makeup brush.
3. Foundation Next thing is your foundation which in my opinion is the one makeup item I always spend my money on, having a good foundation is the key to a flawless make up look. Make sure your foundation is the right colour for your skin tone. If you’re not sure what your skin tone is, you can go into any makeup counter and ask them and find out what colour foundations best suit your skin tone.
4. Powder Once your foundation is applied, you then add a light layer of translucent powder to set the foundation and help it last throughout the whole day. I always use translucent powder because you don’t need to add anymore colour to your face, as that is what the foundation is for.
7. Eyes First off you need to apply your eye primer for a smooth base to start with and for your eye shadow to last all day long. A must for flawless eye makeup is blending, if in doubt keep blending until all the harsh lines are gone.
8. Lips Lipstick is the final step, not only does it tie the whole look together but it makes your lips look bigger, bolder, and sexier.
Top Tip The one top tip bit of advice I could give to help with achieving flawless makeup is to get yourself a good set of makeup brushes. I know brushes can be expensive but they are the one thing I would splurge my money on. If you look after them and use them right you could have them for a life time. They make the world of difference to applying your makeup. N O. 2 (12/ 20 14)

5 Ways to Prep your Skin
This Winter
Oh ladies, how did the summer go by in such a flash? Yes sadly, it’s the end of long summer days and the odd ice cream cone on the beach and instead it’s back to the old routine of school runs, crazy traffic and unpredictable weather. So that means its time to tackle your skincare regime, because savvy gals who prep their skin for the winter will reap the benefits come cold weather time! But don’t freak out, it doesn’t actually mean you have to run out and buy a whole heap of expensive beauty products. In fact with a few small steps you can have your skin prepped, primed and ready to face the changing seasons in no time.
by Niamh O’Reilly

Beauty from the inside out The saying goes that ‘beauty comes from within,’ and in this instance it’s not just an old wives tail, it’s very much a real concept you can easily apply to you own beauty regime. The best way to vital skin loving minerals and vitamins is to include them in your diet, or take a beauty supplement. Thankfully the beauty shelves are packed with potential skin boosting supplements, such as cult brand Fountain, which recently arrived in Brown Thomas. Offering targeted health and beauty nutrients in easy-to-take liquid formats, the unique bioavailability of each Fountain supplement allows the full benefits of its ingredients to be received easily by the body. Try the Beauty Molecule €29.99 which gives the benefits of 26,000 grapes in just one teaspoon! Another skin boosting supplement worth checking out is Perfectil, which contains a whopping 24 micronutrients and is specially formulated for utilisation by the skin’s lower dermal layer, hair follicles and nails. Minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium and magnesium are included to maintain the condition of skin, hair and nails as well as vitamins C, E and natural plant carotenoids to help protect the skin. A great little weapon in your beauty arsenal, a box will set you back €15.99.

NO.2 ( 1 2/2 014)
Exfoliate
While it’s not a good idea to go scrubbing your face with a harsh abrasive every day, it is helpful to use a gentle exfoliator once a week to get rid of dead skin cells, which will aid the process of skin renewal. There’s been a lot of talk recently about the damage micro beads in exfoliants can do to the environment, so try and look for a natural product that uses something like sugars instead. Irish brand Bia Beauty’s Orange & Grapefruit Facial Exfoliant and Cleanser €16.95 not only smells divine, but has blended natural skin goodies like castor and thistle oil which are excellent at cleansing and extracting impurities with natural jojoba grains. If you’re looking for something a little flashier then Clarisonic Mia 2 High Performance Skincare Set €149, which includes Lancôme’s Visionnaire, is ideal. A mini massage and cleanser duo, the Clarisonic has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, oily areas, dry skin patches and to help improve skin tone. Using breakthrough sonic oscillation technology, oscillating at a sonic frequency of over 300 movements per second, it massages away dirt up to six times more effectively than with hands alone. It’s the ideal way to prep skin for the changing seasons.
Moisturise
If there’s one step you cannot miss in prepping skin for the change in seasons, it’s moisturising, and the science boffins at Shiseido have been working on a product that works with the skins own defences to do just that. Called Ultimune (€80), the concept behind this genius product is that by reactivating the skins own immune properties it will increase its ability to resist, protect, regenerate and strengthen against harmful aggressors and this helps to slow down the ageing process for as long as possible. With a dreamy texture and suitable for all skin types, this is definitely one product to try out. For something a little less pricey but still packed with lush ingredients L’Oréal Paris’ Extraordinary Oil-Cream €22.99 is a delight for the senses and feels wonderful on your face. Inspired by the Asian beauty rituals, this deliciously silky product is enriched with essential oils of Rosemary and Lavender, chosen for their antioxidant and antibacterial properties, as well as Argan Oil, Royal Jelly and extract of White Jasmine.
Massage
Getting into a daily routine of a quick facial massage can have huge benefits for the skin in terms of anti-aging and will help you face the winter with ease . Use it with your moisturising product and you’ll see a real pep in your skin too. Kobido is a type of facial massage that stimulates the energy flow running from the face to the neck. Applied on a regular basis, it extends and enhances the radiance and youthful appearance of skin. Targeting areas on the temples, behind the ears and on the brow line for example can release tension and restore the flow of energy in the skin.
Get your beauty sleep
Finally, the importance of beauty sleep cannot be understated. If you don’t give your body time to rest and regenerate then you’ll wake up with bags under your eyes and unable to cope with the changing seasons. Give skin a helping hand and slap on some rich night-time face goodies like Bia Beauty’s Skin Superfood (€12.95) packed with immortelle, comfrey, calendula, mallow and heartsease, it’s gentle and soothing. Filorga Sleep & Peel is another good one to check out, packed with that skin miracle ingredient hyaluronic acid, it gets to work, helping skin repair itself, while you sleep.
