Buzz words. Every modern object one might want from cars to chairs require these annotations as if they were the by-line to a movie poster. Given the amount of time expended on reviews & comparisons, it would seem half the time the product is chosen due to how cleverly the buzz has been generated as opposed to its actual value. The modern watch industry is not immune from this sensationalism but to survive is to keep up with the times. However, the fact that the basics of mechanical watchmaking hasn’t changed in two hundred or so years, it is one industry where despite mechanical & technological evolution; a certain functionality must remain beyond any trend. A point in case is the Reverso Duo from Jaeger LeCoultre, a grand old Maison in watchmaking terms who laid the foundation for many other brands besides their own. The Reverso is a model that has stayed the course over its seventy five year history. Originally designed for the polo playing colonialists in India, the often plain steel reverse face soon gained a dial of its own once the watch caught on and graduated from horseback to a genuine fashion statement. From functionality to form. The reason I chose to highlight this model is for the fact that in their current collection, it is somewhat of a throwback with its smaller dimensions and engraved dials. Housing the hand wound Jaeger LeCoultre built calibre 854 1 offering two days worth of power reserve, it has height of 42.2mm with a width of just 26mm. It is within this slightly more refined structure where the real genius is delivered. The immediately visible face carries a matt silver finish with hand engraved elements in the centre track and within the seconds sub dial. The reverse face offers the functionality to create a second timezone with the hour hand moving exclusively of the silver dial. A twenty four hour sub dial with day and night indication ensures the second time is read with clarity. 020 7487 5628 | newcavendishjewellers.com New Cavendish Jewellers, 2 Marylebone High Street, London, W1U 4NF

Functionality is again nothing without the sheer beauty of the anthracite grey dial with hob nail effect finish. The sober silver dial is the perfect day watch while the darker reverse dial is an ideal evening foil, elegantly engraved and detailed without being too fussy or over complicated. Two watches in one with the added timezone complication all in a case size that oozes demure elegance. Let alone the other collections from Jaeger LeCoultre, the Reverso family carries a variety of models and complications that could cater to virtually every taste. Whilst some models have been discontinued over the years as fashions have changed, the Reverso Duo has survived the cull for the same reason we apply the word classic to any medium; it stands the test of time. The art deco form continues to quietly retain a strong following while the perfectly clever and subtle complication adds to the remarkable functionality of this beautiful timepiece. Please feel free to visit the store and view the Reverso Duo alongside many more models from the Jaeger LeCoultre collection.
