To say that everyone at Diss Town Council has been overwhelmed and amazed by the fantastic response from the people of Diss to the Freedom of the Town Parade would be an understatement. The event seems to have captured the hearts and imagination of the public in a way which was not anticipated but it was wonderful to see the community coming together to show their support for The Royal Anglian Regiment. The atmosphere in the town centre bedecked with bunting, with crowds of children and people waving flags and cheering the soldiers is something that will live in the memories of all who were involved for many years to come. Of course an event of this nature took months of organisation and hard work and it would not have been possible without the support of the many businesses, organisations and individuals who all stepped up

to the mark and offered practical and financial assistance for which we are truly thankful. Since that day letters and emails have been flooding in from members of the public, businesses and friends and relations of soldiers praising the Town Council for the excellent organisation of the event and saying how much they enjoyed the day. Many of the soldiers including the Colonel of The Regiment said that the parade in Diss was the best they had ever been to. A letter from the Regiment thanked the people of Diss for their warm welcome saying ‘The outpouring of goodwill has strengthened further the morale of our soldiers and made them feel that they, and the difficult job that they are called upon to do, are both valued and appreciated by the Nation they strive to serve’. So now it’s back to business as usual at the Town Council, but we will never forget the very proud day when Diss and the surrounding towns and villages came together to show their support for the men and women of the 1st Battalion of The Royal Anglian Regiment, The Vikings.
The Christmas Carnival this year is to be held on Sunday 2nd December from 1pm to 6pm. The theme this year is Christmas of 1952 and the lights will be switched on by 999 Radio Norwich DJ Tina James aided by JV from ‘Tom Kay In The Morning’ at 4.15pm. Santa arrives at 2pm and will then be in his grotto until 6pm. His reindeers Dasher and Cupid will be in Queens Square where you are welcome to take photos. Father Matthew Jackson will bless the tree followed by the traditional carol singing. Everyone is welcome to join in the Christingle service at the Church following the lights switch on at 4.30pm. Attleborough Fire Fighters need your help to raise money for the fire brigade benevolent fund but they are also looking for new volunteers and will doing a sponsored engine pull from the station in Thieves Lane to the Queens Square during the afternoon. Once again there will be craft stalls in the church Hall, town Hall and Sport Hall and Larry Grays fun fair will be situated about the town
for rides for all ages. There will be refreshments around the town plus the WI will be doing refreshments in the Sport Hall next to the Bouncy Castle and Chapel Road School will be doing refreshments in the Church Hall. Chair person Karen Pettitt said she would like to thank everyone who has helped in whatever way. This is an event that takes a lot of organising. Park Radio Returns!
Singing Carols at Lunchtime

Park Radio, the local community radio station for Diss and the surrounding area returns to the airwaves on Monday 26th November at 6am for its 4th 28 day broadcast on 87.7FM from its purpose built studios at 18a Market Place in Diss town centre (under Candies). Staffed purely by volunteers, including some well known local radio presenters, and funded by local advertisers and sponsors, Park Radio first took to the air at Christmas 2010 providing local news, interviews and music plus plenty of listener interaction and specialist evening music shows for lovers of rock, blues, soul and country. In addition, programming time is alloacted to the young people of the area to take a turn behind the microphone. During its 4th 28 day broadcast this Christmas there will be many ways for listeners to take part, enter the numerous on-air competitions as well request music from its huge record library which comprise over 10,000 tracks.
Response over the last 2 years from both listeners and advertisers has been positive with the station being asked to attend many local events including Diss Town Carnival, Proms in the Park, Horham Steam Rally, Scole Fete and others. Park Radio will also be heavily involved in the Diss Town Christmas Lights switch-on planned for Saturday December 1st. Park Radio will be applying for a 5 year full-time license during 2013 with the support of the community - so that Diss can have its very own permanent radio station. I was about 19 years of age when arranging carol events interested me and when I went to work at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup Kent the first opportunity to do so arose. In those days of the 60's the old open corridored and hutted wards stemmed right back to the first world war and were famous for the pioneering of skin graft surgery for badly injured soldiers. It was there that I teamed up with an older staff nurse and so began a good number of years arranging the staff carol service. The chapel was ornate even though the building stood in a wooded area and right next to the mortuary this did not stop people attending on what was often a cold winters evening. Now fast forward lifes journey and several decades later there I am still arranging
what is a different style carol event. Now in its fourth year 'Lunch Time Carols' takes place at St. Marys Church Diss on Friday 21st December 12.30pm. This is a different occasion but is aimed at shop and office workers, visitors, and residents of the wider community alike and in particular the elderly and families with children who these days lead busy lives especially at Christmas tide. Singing your favourite carols this time of day has become very popular and the event is light hearted and lasts just 45 minutes after which you can enjoy a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. So add to your late Christmas shopping list a visit to this parish church and start what I hope will be a nice festive season for hopefully everyone who attends. Gerry Hosking.

2012 Runway Run Your Local Magazine raise £1,319.95 for East Anglian Air Ambulance. Your Local Magazine were pleased to have raised £1,319.95 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance when they took part in the East Anglian Air Ambulance Runway Run at Tibenham. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored and gave donations for this worthwhile cause and to the many people who donated at the Harleston Trade Fair. The East Anglian Air Ambulance now runs two fully medically equipped helicopters. Code named Anglia One based at Norwich Airport and Anglia Two at Cambridge, both who serve people of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Between the two helicopters they are able to
provide live-saving resources reaching patients quickly and if required, transporting then to hospital within minutes. With no Government or National Lottery funding, and each mission costing around £2,270 it takes over £6.2 million pounds a year to keep the helicopters flying. There is exciting news from the Air Ambulance to say their brand new helicopter that has been fitted with state- ofthe-art technology to allow night flying should be ready before the end of the year.
Waveney Valley Community First (and Fast) Responders Saving lives. It’s 8.30 in the evening when your partner, father, mother, friend, suddenly clutches their chest, moans with pain and collapses onto the floor. Is it a heart attack, a stroke or just indigestion? You have no idea so you dial 999. If you’re really lucky and there’s an ambulance crew in the immediate vicinity, then they will arrive in minutes but in a rural area like ours that is not always possible. That’s where the Community First Responders come in. When ambulance control takes your 999 call they will ask you what the problem is. From the description above they will despatch the nearest available ambulance or paramedic but at the same time they will also alert the local Community First Responder. Within a few minutes that Responder will be on his or her way wearing a high vis yellow jacket, and carrying two bags of kit including an AED (automated external defibrillator) and an oxygen cylinder. As all volunteers live locally we are on the scene within minutes of that 999 call, often well ahead of the ambulance or paramedic. In the case of a heart attack every minute counts and the sooner CPR can be started and the AED pads applied, the more chance there is of saving a life. Not every situation is life threatening, but the fact that someone in a yellow jacket with “Ambulance Service” across the back arrives promptly is, in itself, very reassuring.
We can do CPR, give oxygen therapy, deal with a variety of incidents or simply make the patient more comfortable until a paramedic or ambulance crew can get to the scene. We also make the initial assessment of the level of risk, so we can update ambulance control with more accurate information than may have come from the 999 call. As well as undergoing intensive basic training, all Responders have to attend a minimum number of training sessions with a paramedic each year in order to stay on the active rota. This is to ensure that our skills are kept up to date and gives us a chance to practise some of the more important procedures. The Waveney Valley Community First Responders cover an area based around Harleston and Fressingfield which includes Mendham, Metfield, Weybread, Fressingfield, the Pulhams, Starston, Arburgh, Denton, Redenhall, and Brockdish. Rotary Club: Wiping out Polio

On active service - Jenny Marshall & Heather Babb took to the back streets of Delhi to help immunise Indian children against polio. The Rotary motto is “Service above Self ” and members of the Rotary Club of Diss and District are always keen to live up to that aim by serving both our community and those of other people around the world. The eradication of Polio worldwide is a cause at the heart of all clubs and two members of the Diss club, taking the idea of assisting in this aim a little further than simple fundraising, have recently returned from a trip to India to help with a National Immunisation Day where Rotarians, working with the Indian Government, immunise every child under five in the country on a single day. This is a massive undertaking but one which, because it has been repeated every year, has transformed India into a country that has now been polio-free for over a year. The work of Rotarians since 1985 has transformed the world from being a place where polio has routinely killed and maimed thousands of
children annually (ask anyone over 60 in this country) to one where we now only have a handful of cases restricted to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. As usual, the Rotary club will be running a concert in the Corn Hall to raise funds for Polio Eradication in the new year. It will be on February 23rd and will be a “Take That” tribute – watch this space for further details. Within our own community, the end of November saw the annual launching of the Rotary illuminated tree on the Mere – a yearly gift to the people of Diss that has lit up the town centre for a quarter of a century (although it didn’t last long last year because of a mini-hurricane). Rotary has also shown its support for the Youth and Community Centre by finally securing funding from Sport England for a new Table Tennis facility that will shortly be presented to the unit. Contrary to popular opinion, Rotary is not a group of old men eating lunch – Rotary in Diss is a group of men and women of all ages actively doing good in the community (and we meet in the evening). It was a high five for Bressingham Primary School when the Food Standards Agency made a recent unannounced visit. A top rating score of five was awarded at the end of the inspection. The government’s Food Standards Agency visits schools up and down the country inspecting food hygiene standards. Headteacher Gavin King was delighted with the school’s rating.

When Perfitts offered to donate a commemorative plaque to mark not only the granting of the freedom of Diss to the Anglian Regiment, but our Queens Diamond Jubilee year the idea developed into a “mile stone” style in Park Road. However Keith Rackham of Perfitts was delighted when Diss Town Council suggested a prime location in Mere Street. James Hollington aged 23 yrs is a valued member of the Perfitts memorial craftsmen team, he was awarded best trainee at the Orton Trust by the “Men of Stones” and as a young apprentice he demonstrated

his skills to the Princess Royal. James attended school with another James, James Grigg, a Royal Anglian “Viking”, they played cricket together and said their farewells before James Grigg left for a tour of duty. A week before James was due to return, he was killed in action. James had been planning a welcome home celebration, with other friends but sadly this was not to be. In tribute to his friend James has made the commemorative stone and as he carefully carved the Royal Anglian Badge it was a moment tinged with great sadness.

According to the Alzheimer's Research Trust, there were about 820,000 people with dementia in the UK last year. The illness affects both men and women and while it mainly affects older people, there are 15,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 who have it. Dementia describes a range of symptoms including memory loss, problems with reasoning and communication skills and a reduction in a person's ability to carry out daily activities. A true home from home Oaklands Care Home is based in Scole, near Diss. Sarah Veness went to have a look around...
I'd often driven past the entrance to the Oaklands Care Home in Scole on the way to visit my parents who live locally but I'd never been inside. So when I was invited to have a look around and write a piece about the home, I jumped at the chance. As I turned up the driveway, I was immediately taken by the lovely grounds. Tucked behind trees, the house is surrounded on all sides by green space which gave it a very peaceful feel. The house itself is a spectacular Georgian mansion which has recently undergone a £2.5 million pound extension to double its size. The extension is beautifully done and very much in keeping with the style of the original part of the house. As I rang the bell, I wondered just what I would see inside. Up to this point, I'd never set foot inside a residential care home and I admit I had preconceptions about people sitting in chairs watching TV quietly. I couldn't have been more wrong. Manager Sally Shadbolt took me on a tour of the home and one thing was instantly striking. Oaklands felt just like a home‌.a cosy, friendly, exciting place with photos on the walls, loads of areas for residents to relax or reminisce and activities for them to undertake if the mood took them. Specialising in dementia care, the staff at Oaklands have gone out of their way to create areas in their lovely home for residents to enjoy activities that they remember from when they were younger. Among others, there is a room with children's toys, an area decked out like a classroom, a fantastic dressing up area complete with glamorous dresses, hats, handbags and jewellery and a corridor dedicated to all things sporting. There is even an area set up like a pub for residents who might fancy the odd tipple! The house has a courtyard in the middle where staff are currently in the process of recreating a seaside area for residents to reminisce about past holidays, complete with
postcards on the wall depicting some of the places they might have once visited. Oaklands also has residents who have moved into the area from London and to help remind them of the area they come from, they have created a special London area in the home. Residents have a choice of lounge and dining areas and can choose when they eat, bathe and sleep. 'We want people to feel as if they are still in their own home,' says Sally. 'At home, you don't eat at a set time so why should it be like that here.' Since the extension was completed in February 2012, Oaklands still has a limited number of rooms available. Sally showed me around one. Large and spacious, all the new rooms comes with their own en-suite bathroom and all rooms have beautiful views across the grounds where residents can enjoy watching the variety of wildlife in the garden. As Sally and I looked out of one window, a deer gracefully trotted past. 'Some residents have brought their own furniture with them to make their rooms feel just like home,' explained Sally. Residents are even allowed to bring their pets with them if they want to which must be a real comfort to some. As we toured the house, it was clear to me that both staff and the residents love being at Oaklands. I was also touched by the effort Sally and her staff had gone to make it feel like a home from home. Sally even showed me an old-fashioned boy's school cap she'd tracked down on ebay to display in the classroom area for the male residents to try on and remember their own school experiences. Oaklands Care Home is a really special place and it's fair to say it shattered my preconceptions about residential care. Next time you're flicking through a catalogue or reading a magazine keep an eye out for our cover girl Isobel Carter. The 3-year-old from New Buckenham is signed to one of the country's top child modelling agencies in London. Mum, Samantha explains: 'From the moment Isobel was born, people were forever telling us how pretty she was and how much she looked like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter Shiloh. Then a friend who works for River Island - and knows a lot about fashion - suggested we sign Isobel up to an agency. I did my research and contacted an agency in London called Urban Angels. They called us in
for a chat and eventually offered Isobel a contract. At first I was apprehensive but they soon put my mind at rest that I would always be with Isobel. And right from the start, Isobel loved it. She loved posing for photos and making friends with the other children on set. Since she started about 18 months ago, she's done shoots for Monsoon, Monsoon Bridal, Tesco, Argos and Next among others. Now her sister Leia, one, has started modelling too and has done shoots for Mothercare and Early Learning Centre. At the moment, Isobel is in the latest Tesco magazine and I get really excited seeing her in it. It's funny but she's not that interested in seeing the photos after the event but she loves it all when it's happening. I'll carry on for as long as the girls enjoy it. I'm lucky that my husband Jay and I have our own business (The Sign Box) so I can afford to be flexible and nip down to London as and when we need to. I'm also lucky to have good friends in London who let us stay and help out when we need them.'

The atmospheric Carols by Candlelight at St George’s Church – across the fields at Shimpling - will be held on Thursday 13th December at 7pm. The church, which has no electricity or heating, is one of over 340 in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Come warmly wrapped, well shod and bring a torch is the advice of organisers Sheila
Cooper and Maurice Philpot. It is not unknown for it to snow on these occasions, but Mrs Cooper and Mr Philpot are making no predictions for this year’s service!

This festive season and New Year sees a first for the East of England, with Old Buckenham Players' production of Sleeping Beauty by John Bartlett. This new adaptation of the classic fairytale written in 2009 has never been performed in East Anglia before. The story of Sleeping Beauty is well known by young and old, but this production, set 100 years after the fateful prick on the finger, gives a slightly different perspective of the classic tale. With a combination of shadow puppetry and spells cast by the Good and Bad Fairies, the audience (and characters!) are transported back and forth through the 100 year time span, piecing together pieces of the puzzle in order to foil evil Carabosse's plan. But what makes this production so special?
Audiences can expect 'laugh a second' scenes (including a rather messy one!), not one but TWO dames, a Gorilla, a Horse and music with a blend of classic and modern chart hits. Sleeping Beauty will be held at Old Buckenham Village Hall where there is a licensed bar selling wine, beer and soft drinks, choc-ices and there will be an interval raffle. The production dates are Thursday 17th, Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January 2013 at 7:30pm with a matinee performance on Saturday 19th January 2013 at 2:30pm. I usually make a pan full at the weekend to last through the week! I usually make spicy parsnip or hearty vegetable soups but would really like a recipe for Tomato Soup which is my favourite! Ingredients: 1kg ripe tomatoes, 4 tbsp olive oil, Pinch of sugar, 1 onion (chopped), 1 carrot (peeled and diced), 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, Small bunch of basil then separate into leaves and stalks, 600ml chicken stock, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 2 tbsp crème fraîche, Extra virgin olive oil (to serve).

Homemade Roasted Tomato Soup
Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 190 C and cut the tomatoes in hal f. Arrange your tomatoes cut -side up, then in a baking dish, drizzle with half the oliv e oil and season with salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar. Bake for approximately an hour, until they are soft and beginning to char around the edges. 2. Take the remaining oliv e oil and heat in a large, heavy-based pan over a me dium heat and add the onion, carrot and garlic. Co ok, whilst stirring regularly, for about 6 -7 minutes until they are soft. Meanwhile, chop up the basil stalks, and add to the pan and cook for another minute. 3. Now add the tomatoes, plus any juices from the dish , to the pan along with the stoc k. Stir and bring to the boil, then lower the heat, cover and leave this to simmer for 25 minutes, until all the veg etables are nice and soft. Leave to cool slightly. 4. Use a blender to purée the soup, then stir in the vinega r and crème fraîche, and season to taste. Reheat gently, while you tear the basil leav es into pieces, then serve with these and a drizzle of oliv e oil on top.

The Cornwallis Country House Hotel and Restaurant A restaurant with a view.
Nestled within 23 acres of tranquil gardens and woodland, the Cornwallis Country Hotel is tucked just off of the A140 in Brome, near Eye. Inside, you can eat in either the intimate AA rosetted restaurant or in the 15th Century Tudor Bar. We chose the restaurant and settled down to select our choices from the threecourse menu. And it certainly was an interesting menu with slightly more unusual items including rabbit and chestnut
ravioli, guinea fowl and celeriac and stilton crumble. It was refreshing to see something so different locally and also exciting to try something new. Between us we ordered beetroot and cumin soup, pan fried scallops with black pudding and pork belly, butternut squash and ricotta arancini with tomato and fennel fondue and smoked salmon for starters. All were an ample size and tasted delicious. For main course, we had grey mullet with a mussel, prawn and saffron broth, pan-fried
Gressingham duck, supreme of guinea fowl and celeriac and stilton crumble. Each main course was beautifully presented and very tasty. Personally I liked the look of them all. For dessert we ordered apple tart tartan with crème Anglaise, coconut panacotta finished with a pineapple and rum syrup and cheese and biscuits. The latter was particularly generous in size with a choice of cheddar, brie and stilton, a range of biscuits and crackers, grapes and celery. The mood in the restaurant
was intimate and the service was excellent. The venue itself really is beautiful and the restaurant proved a fitting example for such a fine building. For that special evening out, we would highly recommend the Cornwallis Country Hotel for its interesting menu, perfect location and excellent food.

On Wednesday November 7th 2012 over 7,000 people lined the streets of Diss to show their support to the Royal Anglian Regiment as they received the Freedom of the Town. It was a fantastic day with people clapping, cheering and waving flags as the troops from the Regiment's 1st Battalion paraded through the centre of town. The troops had just arrived home from serving in Afghanistan and the homecoming parade gave everyone the chance to show their gratitude and respect. Over the following pages there are a selection of memories of the day...

Led by Deborah Sarson, Clerk of Diss Town Council. For the thousands of people that attended the Royal Anglian Parade, the day went incredibly smoothly. But it was only thanks to the months of hard work that went on behind the scenes. Deborah Sarson, Clerk of Diss Town Council knows this only too well. 'Since the idea to grant The Royal Anglian Regiment the Freedom of Diss came about in November 2011, we have worked tirelessly to make the event a success. It involved numerous meetings between myself and the various agencies, businesses and individuals who could turn this into reality such as the Police, the Norfolk County Council Highways Authority, the Fire and Ambulance Services, Mervyn Lambert Plant Ltd Traffic Management™ and, of course, the Regiment itself. We had to consider security, road closures, parking suspension, crowd safety, while all the time making sure the businesses along the parade route could continue to trade. Aside from the parade we had to organise invitations for guests, liaise with the publishers of the commemorative programme, oversee the renovation of the Mere Street flower bed, draft and approve the wording of the scrolls and organise the engraving of the glasses
which were given to each of the soldiers among many, many other tasks. On the day, it was a whole team effort and everyone did an amazing job. We had so much support from so many organisations without whom we could never have had such success. I'm thrilled that the day went ten times better than the best we could have hoped for. The Regiment thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Diss and were overwhelmed at the level of support Diss showed them.'

Soldiers Comfort Boxes A Great day for Diss on Wednesday November 7th 2012, to see our Royal Anglians marching through Diss, when I met the troops in the Cornhall they were amazed at the welcome Diss put on for them. They told me it was the best they had been given, they received two pints of beer and a choice of chicken or beef curry with a great cake that had been specially made. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people of Diss & District who have donated for the troops comfort shoe boxes over the past five years I have been sending them, but as they are all coming home in 2014, and due to the economic situation in raising funds, I have decided to retire the small team, many thank-yous again for all your kindness in the donations. Working in my own gym for the past 10 years I regularly get asked what is the best form of exercise for fat burning? You do not need to work for hours in the gym to burn fat you just have to work at the correct intensity and lift the correct weight to turn your body into a fat burning machine! The myth that lifting heavy weights for women will bulk us up is nonsense as body builders find it hard enough to bulk up by training over 300 repetitions per workout so 3 sets of 12 in a regular workout is not going to achieve massive muscle growth. A certain amount of muscle growth will happen depending on the programme you are following but it is a good thing to help us increase our basal metabolic rate and burn

more calories per day than people without as much muscle tissue. The bulking up effect is down to the amount of fat covering this muscle so the quicker we can shed this the more toned we will look. When it comes to cardio vascular workouts for fat burning it is better to work harder for less time rhythmically than it is to follow a long, slow duration approach as it is the total amount of calories burned that makes the difference and the harder you work, the higher the level the more calories you burn towards your total daily calorie burn. The conclusion is that a combination of cardio exercise completed to a higher intensity over a lesser duration using a progressive programme is more beneficial to

My purpose was merely to view At the first fairs I went to But soon I fell for (inter alia) Displays of household paraphernalia. Looking back, how great my failure Resisting tempting Kitchenalia! Little wonder that I fell Under Kitchenalia's spell. These relics of old domesticity, Crafted with skill and eccentricity, Objects of ever shape and size, Each of them pleasing in my eyes; Originally craftsmen's wares With roles in Upstairs and Downstairs; Some commonplace, and some thought chic All so well made they're now antique! Once they had functions to perform; Now it's their purpose to adorn! Retirement brings them a fresh chance To work - by giving ambiance! I never tire when I am looking At objects once used to do cooking,

Such joy - at the next antiques fair My heart's desire was waiting there! Then, as all new collectors do I quickly made my first prize two. How constantly I went on buying Was measured by the multiplying Of them items I acquired My progress was of one inspired! Just when my urge was at its height I saw things in a whole new light. If my collection grew this way What rooms would I have for display? My jiggers totalled thirty-one. So my collecting days were done. The time I used to spend acquiring Could now be spent simply admiring All the objects I'd accumulated Of which but two are duplicated. It is impressive to amass Twenty-one jiggers made of brass -
Possibly an indication Of craftsmen's choice at their creating. Visually brass has more appeal Then the two crimpers made of steel. The jiggers made of wood and brass Possess a touch of better class. Two of them have the ponderous feel As that of stately legal Seal. While all-wood crimpers do look plain Their timeless qualities remain; A pastry cook would value much Their unfailing lightness of touch. And some collectors too are keen To add them to their group of trine. Wood and ceramic, both combined I only once did I ever find And this, my favourite, seems unique. Quintessentially antique! Charli's House Christmas Cheer.
So instead of thinking of really important things like picking furniture, paint colours, or curtain fabric, I'm thinking of Christmas. Every year, even before the calendar has ticked over to December, I start thinking of how I'm going to decorate the house. I literally love the festive season, and I feel this can only get worse now I have my own home. One thing I love at Christmas is to fill kilner jars with baubles and fairy lights. It's a perfect way to fill a newly plastered fireplace, or any fireplace in fact, and create a warm twinkly light. A tree is one thing that

this year my house won't have but I'll happily go home to my parents and decorate theirs. My personal favourite style at Christmas is a winter wonderland. It might be something to do with my unhealthy obsession with the colour grey but I love a shimmering silver bauble. So next year when I do get the chance to purchase a tree, it will be covered in silver, white and glass baubles, and of course the all important warm white fairy lights. Back to the progress. After the destruction of the last month, my house is being put back together. Seeing plasterboard going on the walls over the original clay lump was so satisfying, and I started to see the house as it would be. With
the winter nights drawing in, one thing my house definitely needed was central heating. After a day of sitting in a freezing cold house waiting for a delivery, there was definitely no way I was skimping on the heating. My budget would have to be cut somewhere else, and even if I didn't have a sofa to sit on, at least I would be warm! Newly plastered walls also gave me a chance to plan the bathroom. I am a traditionalist at heart but when it comes to a bathroom, I want ultra modern. I want to feel like I'm in a first class hotel every time I walk into the room. As a person who hates baths, it was a perfect opportunity to spoil myself silly and order a large luxurious shower. And
that's what I did. So, with my paint chart and silver baubles in hand, I wish you a very merry Christmas.

Keep Yer Heel Down Bor! Wotcha!... We sometimes get tree surgeons knocking on our door offering to trim one of our silver birch trees – and that's even without seeing the bigger one at the back! They mean well, although I think we have gone a bit tree surgeon mad in this country. What they don't know is that my wife comes from the land of trees, Finland, and having Some of 30,000+ spruce trees been brought up on a farm where forestry was an integral part of the farm's production could probably write down what she doesn't know on the back of a postage stamp. The picture shows a few of probably about 30,000 spruce trees being raised at her home, and not only did they propagate trees, but they grew them on, harvested them, processed the wood and built houses out of them. I don't think they do carpets and laminate floors in Finland! And you wouldn't want to be a double-glazing salesperson either, since they have built houses with treble and quad glazing since the year dot. So, of course we don't have an artificial tree for Christmas! We haven't yet persuaded the Finnish government to make us a present each year of a tree shipped from Finland, and so my 'eagle-eyed' wife chooses locally. Buy your tree from a place where you are allowed to dig it up yourself, keep it in water till you need it indoors and you won't get the needles!. It might even grow. Keep on troshin' and remember, don't call the (Christmas) tree surgeon until the 6th January! Mark Aiken

Security Tips for the Dark Evenings Ahead Keep your house safe. 58% of intruder theft takes place in the evening and at this time of the year the evenings are longer. • Lock doors and windows every time you go out even it is only for a short trip. • Most double glazing has window locks but older windows can also have extra security locks fitted. • Use all the locks that are fitted to the door when you leave the building; if one of your locks is becoming hard to use try to get it changed as soon as you can instead of not using it. • 3 point locking is the best form of security for any type of external doors. • Sliding type patio doors always need extra security locks designed for the door. • Never leave keys outside under pots or mats; many crimes have been committed by just using a key found outside. Don’t make it too easy.
• Never leave keys in the windows or doors or leave car keys on show in the house. • Security timer switches for lights and radios on talk channels gives the impression that the house is occupied. • Professionally installed Intruder alarms and security lighting are always the best prevention. • Always put ladders, steps and tools away in garages and sheds after use; use chains and padlocks to secure ladders if they are too big to store. • Never leave a padlock open with the code numbers on show; the code can be written down and used later. • Try to chain ladders, bikes and large items like wheelbarrows all together; this makes it harder to move one thing without disturbance. Sainsbury’s Colleague Bill does his bit for The Poppy Appeal.
A checkout colleague at S a i n s b u r y ’s Attleborough joined in at the Poppy Appeal collection stand at the front of the store on remembrance weekend, selling poppies and wristbands in aid of The Royal British legion. Bill Lee who is Sainsbury’s oldest employee at age 80 is a long standing supporter of the charity as although being too young to have served in the Second World War he did complete national service from 1950-52 in Egypt at the Suez Canal. Bill’s service to his country didn’t stop there with 5 years in
the Territorial Army and another 8.5 years as an ambulance driver. He then joined the prison service giving healthcare and nursing treatment for the next 32 years. He proudly displays his 3 medals in the picture which are an Imperial Service Medal for Meritorious Service, General Service Medal in the Suez Campaign and a Queen’s Jubilee Medal earned at the Silver Jubilee for his prison service. For the last 3.5 years Bill has been working at Sainsbury’s on the checkout and is a firm favourite with the customers. Although he takes things a bit easier now he still works 32 hours a week at the store. Next month he will turn 81 and is planning a return to Egypt with a trip down the Nile.

Things you need to know about …..LPAs There can no longer be any argument.
Every adult should have an LPA. But whether you’re considering one LPA or both types, and irrespective of how much you pay, you need to be sure it’s set up correctly. Amazingly, many LPAs are deficient in some respect or another. This can lead to the document being rejected altogether, or do a lesser job than originally intended, which is not what you paid for! Not forgetting of course that if the Office of the Public Guardian do reject your application you will forfeit the registration fee and have to start all over again! Here are just a few of the things you need to watch out for:
4 Be careful how you appoint your attorneys to act. Appointing them to act “jointly” may seem like a good idea, wherein in fact it is often the worst choice! 4 At least one replacement attorney is essential. If your original attorney(s) cannot or will not act, and you have no replacement attorney your LPA ends, forcing your family to apply to the Court of Protection. 4 If you include any Restriction(s) within your LPA make your intent totally clear and unambiguous, otherwise the Court of Protection could strike it out, leaving you with a lesser document than you intended. 4 It is possible, and sometimes extremely useful to have your attorneys act on your behalf on financial matters prior to your being incapacitated. However a wrongly worded Restriction could make this impossible.
4 Never attempt to give one attorney more authority than any other attorney as the Court will over rule it! 4 Register your LPA(s) immediately. Never, ever be persuaded, even by a solicitor, to defer registering your LPA(s). This borders on lunacy and can place you in a position of having no LPA at the very time your family are most desperate for it! 4 Once LPA is registered, arrange to have several “self-certified” copies made. These can be a real time and money saver for your attorney(s). Remember: once an LPA is registered the content cannot be altered in any way at all. hot chocolate or soup, and covering yourself in a blanket. Again, warmer colours help create a sense of warmth even before you cover yourself up. Rearrange your furniture. It may sound silly, but moving your sofas and chairs to create a closer living area can really help a room feel warmer. And obviously, you want to free up the radiator that was hidden behind the settee during the winter! Get some thicker curtains. If you have a drafty house, the best thing to invest in are some new curtains to keep out the winter winds. You can also buy special blinds that fit snuggly in your window frame to stop virtually all breezes sneaking through.
