Jane Eyre outdoors at the castle YC17 music festival in Lebberston by Dave Barry An outdoor production of Jane Eyre will be staged in the grounds of Scarborough castle on Saturday 8 July, at 7.30pm. Chapterhouse Theatre, from Lincoln, have adapted Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the first domestic noir. Jane is a young governess who arrives at the mysterious Thornfield Hall, deep in the Yorkshire moors, and meets the enigmatic Mr Rochester. So begins one of the greatest romances of English literature. When a secret from the past returns to haunt them, can the lovers’ passion survive the

forces that might tear them apart forever? Theatregoers are invited to take blankets and picnics. It is one of several events planned by English Heritage for the castle this year. Jane Eyre The others are a community day on Sunday (see page 12), Hands on History, with a medieval theme (2228 July, 29 July-4 Aug, 7-11 Aug, 12-18 Aug, 2125 Aug, 26 Aug-3 Sep), Roman Scarborough (5-6 Aug) and Scarborough at War (19-20 Aug). Tickets can be booked online.

Attractions include the Kingstown Scottish Pipe Band, a Viking village and battles, the Imps motorcycle display team, the Stampede stunt company, a fancy-dress contest, food and drink, a traditional funfair, classic cars and bands Full Nelson, Locked Out, Alice in Thunderland and Rock of Ages. On stage the next evening, from about

6pm, will be Abba cover band Planet Abba, Memphis Cruisers, Filey Show Group and Abi Foster. Promoter Chris Shields says: “This event is growing every year, organised by a small committee of volunteers. Money is raised locally to provide this free event to benefit local people and visitors”.
