Letter to the editor
Dear Editor,
On behalf of the McGrath Foundation, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Cooroy and Hinterland community for their incredible support and fundraising efforts through Pinking Up Cooroy.
In 2024, Pink Up Your Town was an opportunity for communities to unite in pink, showing solidarity with those experiencing breast cancer.
I am proud to say that we have successfully reached our first mission of funding over 250 nurses to support those impacted by breast cancer. This would not be possible without the fundraising support of generous Australian communities like Pink Up Cooroy. This means that as of January 2025, we are taking our care to all cancers. We are so appreciative of the support of our Pink Up Your Town communities like yours who have helped make this happen.
Thanks to your valuable support, we are helping provide expert care and support for families across Australia going through cancer, for free.
Once again, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks for the generosity of the Cooroy community during Pink Up Your Town. We are truly grateful for the support.
Kind regards, Tracy

NOOSA OPEN STUDIOS 10-year milestone
TEN YEARS OF SUPPORTING NOOSA ARTISTS IN 2025
NOOSA Open Studios, being held October 1019 this year, began as a project for artists with the Noosa Arts and Crafts Association in 2015, bringing previously hidden creative practices into the public eye.
It has since grown to include some 100+ local artists across Noosa Shire: coastal, hinterland and in our smaller communities.
This year will be our biggest ever celebration thanks to the ongoing and valuable sponsorships of Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa, Noosa Arts and Crafts, Hinternoosa Real Estate, Bendigo Community Bank, Matsos Eumundi, Studio One, and Your Local Lifestyle newspaper.
This recognition by local businesses of the value of art in our community helps showcase the extensive creativity taking place all across Noosa Shire in studios, sheds and homes.
Some innovative and exciting activities are planned in the lead-up to the much-anticipated event where local artists open private home studios to give a unique sneak peek into what goes into making their art.
The first activity is to recognise the vision of the first Noosa Open Studios committee members from 2015.
Inaugural President Christine Pritchard, and her visionary team of artists, Gabi Dick, the late Trish Bradford, Helen Lawson, Jenny Hines, Dave Gilbert,
Barbara Hamilton and Ellen Appleby will be awarded Certificates of Honor by Noosa Open Studios.
2025 President, Trevor Purvis, said the efforts of this team, most of whom are still active in the arts community today, reflect the passion and community spirit that drives our many Noosa artists.
“Over the 10 years, Noosa Open Studios art trail has brought thousands of visitors into the beautiful Noosa Shire to explore hundreds of artists’ studios and bring muchappreciated recognition and sales to local artists,” Trevor said.
“Thank-you to the enthusiastic art lovers and collectors for their passion to support local creatives and make Noosa - and its hinterland communities – the best and biggest art destination in Queensland.

“We hope all our visitors take home a piece of Noosa art culture in 2025.”

NEW CRYSTAL SHOP Brings heart and soul to Cooroy

COOROY’S Maple Street has a new gem—Sea of Crystals, a locally owned crystal shop opposite the Butter Factory Arts Complex. Run by longtime Noosa resident Gabrielle, the store is a passion project years in the making, offering a unique selection of handpicked crystals chosen for their quality and healing properties.
Gabrielle, who has lived in Tewantin for 35 years, has been involved in the crystal industry for two decades. From Eumundi Markets to pop-up shops at Noosa Civic, she has now found the perfect place to bring her dream to life.
“Opening a crystal shop with soul and atmosphere has been a long-term goal,” she says.

Sea of Crystals caters to healers, collectors, and those drawn to crystals’ natural beauty and energy. Gabrielle personally selects each piece, ensuring it carries a specific quality or healing benefit. With an advanced diploma in Metaphysics and extensive experience as a crystal therapy practitioner, her knowledge sets her business apart.
Since opening, the response from the Cooroy community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The most rewarding thing is hearing how much people love the shop and how happy they are to have us here,” Gabrielle shares. While building awareness is always a challenge for a new business, the warmth and support from locals have been incredible.
Beyond the shop, Gabrielle enjoys spending time at the beach with her handsome dog, Jack, who has quickly become a favourite among visitors. Looking ahead, she hopes to deepen her roots in the community and contribute to Cooroy’s welcoming spirit. For those considering starting a business in the area, she offers this advice: “You won’t find a more welcoming place than Cooroy.”
You can find Sea of Crystals at 14 Maple Street, Cooroy.

NEVER ALONE You’re
JESSE HOBSON IS A ONE MAN PODCAST PRODUCER ON A PERSONAL CRUSADE. HIS SHOW, 5 WITH A DIGGER PODCAST , FEATURES JESSE IN CONVERSATION WITH VETERANS FROM AUSTRALIA’S ARMED FORCES AND REINFORCES A SINGLE MESSAGE; YOU’RE NEVER ALONE.
JESSE is a full time dad, small business owner and the founder of 5 With A Digger. This Anzac Day marks twelve months since his first podcast aired, born out of a desire to give a platform to the voices of our diggers. After losing two mates, diggers who died tragically and unnecessarily, Jesse was compelled to do something, so he started talking, in the hope that his show might make a difference.
Podcasts feature heavily in my daily media consumption. I regularly follow a dozen or more podcast shows and fork out money via subscriptions to a few channels I can’t live without. To the uninitiated, a podcast is simply a program (recorded by a podcaster) and made in a digital audio file that can be downloaded via the internet. Most are free, and you can listen to podcasts on popular Apps like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Youtube and ABC Listen. I think of podcasts like my personal radio. I am the radio programmer and choose to listen to shows from channels that appeal to my personal tastes. Podcasts exist on just about every subject you can think of; politics, music, self-help, true crime, comedy, history, fashion, technology and popular culture. If you can think of a subject, there is probably a podcast about it somewhere in the world.
Jesse’s 5 With A Digger premise is an example of the niche subject material that the podcast platform can accommodate. In this scenario, the listener is invited into raw and intimate conversations between Jesse and his guests, mostly diggers who have

served in the defence forces. Recorded in his home studio, Jesse is able put his guests at ease. The shows sound like two mates having a yarn over a couple of beers, no filters and no sensors.
Broadcasting was something that came naturally for Jesse. He was already a fan of many podcasts, studying interviewing techniques and audio quality, when he decided to commit to the show.
“I always wanted to work in radio when I was younger. As a young fella Dad was mates with a weekend breakfast radio host in Wagga and he used to take me in there every Saturday for a few hours and I would sit and watch. I always used to record myself when I was a kid and I just loved radio.”
Jesse was born in Nambour and raised in Wagga Wagga. As a young high school graduate he came to the Sunshine Coast for Schoolies Week in 2008.
wanted to do. But I hired an editor for the first thirty episodes as I wanted top quality. I wanted everything to sound immaculate.”
Although Jesse has not come from the defence forces, producing 5 With A Digger has opened his eyes up to life in and out of the forces. He has learnt a lot about the physical and mental health struggles of veterans.
The shows sound like two mates having a yarn over a couple of beers, no filters and no sensors.
“I never went home”, he says laughing. He describes his approach to podcasting the way he describes himself; genuine and authentic, with the ability to empathise. He has shown great tenacity in developing his show and is largely self-taught. As an avid podcast listener, following a wide range of topics, especially sport, Jesse had high expectations. He says, “I had listened to so much, so I had a rough idea about what I
“My dad was in the army for fifteen years so I have that military background from the old man. He passed away about nine years ago. He didn’t really talk much about his life in the army but he certainly had some after effects from his time. He was pushed into the army when he was about 16 years old, as a diesel mechanic. He left Maryborough and went straight into very tough training at the Kapooka Military Area”.
Jesse says that Anzac Day was an emotional day for his father. A lot of his Dad’s issues stemmed from a troubled childhood and he still carried the scars, physical and mental, of his years spent in the service.
Jesse explains that both of his mates had mental health issues that stemmed from chronic physical pain which required medication. Over time they struggled with many issues, including feeling abandoned
by the defence force. Their deaths inspired the podcasts motto, You’re Never Alone, and it’s a simple message that Jesse likes to reinforce.
“A lot of my guests have been discharged and felt cast aside, whether it was medical discharge or due to their physical or mental health. They often don’t feel valued for putting their life on the line,” he explains.
“It’s starting the conversation then it’s sort of like a domino effect. Now that I have cracked nearly 50 episodes, more and more blokes are opening up. A few of my guests have told me that they have sent the link (of the podcast) to other blokes and they have rung up and had a good yarn about stuff. And they have started the conversation amongst their friends now too.”
Jesse has over one thousand people a day on his social media channels and up to five hundred listens per week.
“I’ve recorded 48 episodes. I’m very consistent, every week. You have to be consistent if you want to build something. Same as if you are going to the gym, you’ve got to go every week, stay consistent. Same if you are building your business up, you need to stay consistent. People get used to the episode coming out every Thursday and you become part of their routine,” he says.
5 With A Digger has a global audience and Jesse tracks his statistics via the podcast platform, Acast, which publishes his program. He proudly shares, “I’ve got listeners from 32 different countries. I can see where the listeners are all over the world

and they are consistent numbers every single week. It is humbling to think that I am sitting in my lounge room, having a few beers, telling stories and changing lives.”
Jesse is inspired by the feedback. He has received random messages from anonymous listeners thanking him for saving their life. He adds, “I get messages from people who tell me the podcast has changed their life. It’s pretty humbling really, it feels unreal.”
Along with the stories of trauma there are many positive stories that diggers share with Jesse. Some of these colourful stories are only passed down by mates sharing them with mates and Jesse is happy to be the recipient of these oral histories.
“Some of these stories are only passed down by re-telling them. Stories about blokes who have lost diggers overseas, those little memories and jokes and the times they have shared together. The only reason they get passed down is through telling the story and honouring the persons life in that way.”
He explains, “One of my guests told me about his group, that even after doing tours together overseas, in all different countries, every year the boys catch up. They still catch up and they still have the same jokes they have had for thirty years. So they still have that mate-ship and the love and they keep it alive.”
Not every digger has a bad story to tell. Many do numerous tours and they still
LIGHTWEIGHT, QUICK-DRY, BREATHABLE CLOTHING

love the service. Jesse says, “They make life long friends and see the world. There are still plenty of good stories. There is a family in the service, teaching young blokes and women how to cook and clean, how to iron their clothes. Teaching them discipline and structure and routine where they might not have had any.”
A couple of recent episodes of 5 With A Digger feature civilian guests, experts in areas that might benefit diggers but also nonservice men and women. Jesse is developing the show to attract a wider audience.
“I want to incorporate all aspects of knowledge, including fitness and breath work. It all helps. I know for a fact when

I am feeling low the best thing I can do is go and train. And I feel heaps better. Both of the personal trainers I have had on (the show) have worked with me and they’ve worked with veterans as well. If it helps me it could help someone else.”
Jesse’s biggest fan is his little boy Thomas. He says, “Thomas has already said that he wants to join the army.” As a full-time dad, running a small business and a producing a weekly podcast, Jesse wanted to set a strong example for his son, while promoting his message.
“The podcast is not for me and it’s not necessarily for my guests. It’s for someone sitting at home who might need that kick

in the arse to go and make a call, see a psychologist, go to a doctor, go start training, start walking or eating better. Anything that I think might help. Just so they know, you’re never alone.”
5 With A Digger can be streamed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all major podcast streaming services. Jesse’s show is entirely self-funded and he has just released show merchandise available at www.crewapparelprint.com.au

DECADES OF DEDICATION TO NOOSA LANDCARE

NOOSA Landcare recently celebrated the retirement of Phil Moran, who stepped down as General Manager after years of dedicated service. A respected leader, mentor, and environmental advocate, Phil’s impact on the local community and natural landscape is immeasurable.
A small gathering was held at the Pomona office to honor Phil’s contributions. Colleagues, friends, and community members shared heartfelt stories, reflecting on his humility, integrity, and unwavering commitment to conservation.
Many described him as a true ‘Landcare Legend’, having transformed Noosa Landcare into one of the largest and most influential organisations of its kind in Australia.
COOROY FAMILY MEDICAL
Phil’s retirement marks the end of an era, but he won’t be a stranger. He will continue his involvement as a member of the Management Committee, ensuring his wisdom and passion remain part of Noosa Landcare’s future. Attendees expressed their gratitude, acknowledging his efforts in educating the next generation of environmental stewards and making sustainability a way of life.
Phil now looks forward to spending time on his bush block, walking with his beloved Labrador-cross Daisy, growing vegetables for his family, and immersing himself in Noosa’s natural beauty. While his leadership role may have concluded, his legacy will endure in the thriving landscapes and communities he helped nurture.

Compassionate leader celebrates 20 years at PCH
“I can’t believe it has been twenty years. Time flies when you are having fun.” Heather Manders
by MARGIE WEGENER

POMONA local Heather Manders has been warmly recognised for twenty years of service at the Pomona & District Community House (PCH).
Surrounded by colleagues past and present, local dignitaries, community group leaders, family and friends, Heather was honoured with a party at Pomona Distillery, to celebrate this significant milestone and recognise her years of dedication.
Heather started as the newly appointed Co-ordinator of Services in 2005, looking after volunteers, activities, events and administration, and for many years she helped publish the popular Cooroora Connect community magazine.
In a congratulatory speech Heather recalled, “My first week was particularly challenging, as my youngest child –Georgia broke her leg just days before I began my new role, making my return to the workforce as a mother challenging.” But it was a challenge she accepted.
Still working, these days Heather fulfils an administration role which includes bookkeeping, supporting other staff, assisting the wonderful volunteers and working closely with Community Engagement Coordinator Susan Schiotz.
“I now have the pleasure of working with Susan who has continually blessed us with her passion for community and expertise in securing funding. Susan is a breath

of fresh air and has put her mark on our community with her initiatives.”
Susan describes Heather as a compassionate leader who has been the heart of PCH. She says, “Heather is generous with her time and wisdom, offering grounded support to those in need. Her dedication has made our centre a place of care and connection for the community.”
In the lead up to the big night, Heather was looking forward to seeing many friends and colleagues.
“I have worked with so many amazing people over the years, including our volunteer management committees, volunteers and staff. Plus, I have engaged and networked with our local community organisations. I have made some wonderful friendships and have so many wonderful memories of our events.”
When she first started at PCH Heather worked with the late Brian Lawson until he retired in 2018. The opening of The Lawson Shed in 2011, in honour of Brian, has been one of Heather’s highlights.
“I had such a great working relationship with Brian. He was my mentor, colleague and friend and we worked well as a team.
In 2008 we employed Kathryn Shewring as Community Engagement Coordinator, and I was overjoyed to be working with her. We were partners in crime and we dreamt up many wonderful activities and events; themed seniors’ lunches, op shop bops and Christmas lights bus tours were so much fun.”
Heather has also been an active volunteer since her now-adult children were at Pomona Playgroup, including at Cooroora

United Football club and positions on the committees of Pomona Kindy, the State School P&C, Pomona Hall, Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, King of the Mountain and the Pomona Family Fun Day. All the community groups were represented by club members joining the party.
John Stuart, President of the Pomona & District Community House Management Committee summed up the shared sentiment perfectly.
“Heather has been a gift that keeps giving to the House and to the wider district. Her well of community spirit seems to never run dry. There aren’t adequate words to express just how grateful we are to her, for all she has done and continues to do.”
A guest book from the evening, highlighting Heather’s 20 years, will be available at PCH in the following weeks for anyone who would like to add their signature.

Heather along with Vicki Dessaix (left) and Barry Stewart(right) worked tirelessly to bring King of the Mountain to the community for many years
THE Spangled Drongo is a conspicuous, highly acrobatic bird, often seen darting from a high perch to snatch tucker in the air. While drongos feed predominantly on insects, they will also dine on small birds, and occasionally fruit and nectar.
The call, like the diet, is extremely varied, from a harsh chattering to distinctive notes like a wire being plucked. One call has been described as a sneeze. Drongos are also accomplished mimics that will copy the alarm calls of nearby species to steal their food.
While sitting on their perch, drongos flick their distinctive forked tails continuously. One theory for this behaviour is that it may suggest to a potential predator that the bird is alert and will therefore be difficult to catch.
The spangled drongo is Australia’s only drongo, but there are 26 species of drongo worldwide through Africa and Asia.
The word “drongo” has long been used in the Australian vernacular as a synonym for idiot. It has been suggested that the uninhibited, somewhat erratic behaviour of drongos was the basis of their name becoming an insult. There was also an Australian racehorse in the 1920s named Drongo which never won any races.
WILD ABOUT NOOSA Spangled Drongo
The moniker’s derivation is from the indigenous language of Madagascar, where it presumably doesn’t mean foolish person.
Our local drongos are heading west for winter and will return next spring.

ZUCCHINI
WHEN I was an apprentice chef living in a share house in Red Hill, my weekly treat was visiting Nono’s, a little family run Lebanese takeaway shop on Musgrave Road. This was my first taste of authentic Middle Eastern food and I instantly fell in love with everything about this style of cooking.
35 years later, Nono’s is still there, serving exactly the same perfectly tangy hommus and babaganoush, tabouleh, handmade kibbeh, baklava, and these zucchini ‘omelettes’.
When I’m in Brisbane I often make a detour back past Red Hill to stock up on supplies, and end up driving back to the coast with tahini sauce running down my arm because these omelettes are impossible to resist.
Mine aren’t as good as Nono’s, but they’re pretty close.
They’re just as good cold as they are warm, and just as good as a brunch or a midnight snack. Think of them as more like a fritter than an omelette.

LEBANESE ZUCCHINI OMELETTES WITH TAHINI SAUCE
INGREDIENTS:
500 gm small zucchinis, grated
160 gm plain flour
4 free range eggs
2 tsp salt flakes
1 tsp cracked black pepper
4 tsp ground cumin
Zest of ½ a lemon
1 tsp baking powder
Makes 12 large or 24 small omelettes
1 tsp salt flakes

METHOD:
Mix together the zucchini, flour, eggs, salt, pepper, cumin, zest, baking powder and dill until well combined.
Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy based frying pan (it needs to get quite hot so they puff a bit and get crispy) and drop large spoonfuls of mixture into the oil, spreading them with the back of the spoon into a rough circle. You’ll fit about 4 at a time into a pan.
Fry until golden and crispy on both sides, then transfer to paper towel to drain and repeat with the remaining mixture.
Whisk together the tahini, water, lemon juice, salt and pepper until smooth and creamy.
Serve the omelettes with the tahini sauce on the side, lemon wedges and fresh dill.

CRIMSON LAKE BY CANDICE FOX
FOR Ted Conkaffey life over the past year has changed irrevocably.

Accused of a brutal crime against a teenage girl, the former detective has lost his job, his wife and baby daughter and almost all of his friends.
After eight months on remand, his case is suddenly dropped due to lack of evidencebut this means that most of the country still believes in his guilt.
In a car borrowed from his lawyer, Ted escapes to sleepy Crimson Lake in far North Queensland and meets local private investigator Amanda Pharell, who is herself no stranger to notoriety.
The pair join forces to attempt to solve a missing persons case. Is celebrity author Jake Scully simply hiding out or has he met a more sinister end?
Dodging corrupt local police officers and self imposed vigilantes, most of the time it feels like Ted is just trying to survive.
Will Ted find Jake and hopefully prove both his, and Amanda’s innocence at the same time?
This is another great novel from prolific Australian crime writer Candice Fox.
The pace is effective and the twist and turns will keep you intrigued until the end.

PORTRAYAL OF A PORTRAIT ARTIST

THE Pomona Railway Station Gallery presents Portrayal, an inspiring exhibition by award-winning portrait artist Jaine Jackson.

Jaine’s journey into art was reignited after a permanent disability in 2008 left her with paralysis from the neck down. Determined to find purpose, she turned to pastels, rediscovering her passion for portraiture. The tactile nature of soft pastels reminded her of fabric, her first artistic love, and helped her reconnect with creativity. Since then, Jaine has earned numerous accolades, including Best in Show at the 2022 Imbil Art Festival and a shortlist for the 2024 Du Reitz Art Award.
Her work captures the essence of her subjects, believing that “eyes are the windows to the soul”.

BIRRUNGA EXHIBITION AT COOROY BUTTER FACTORY
THE Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) is pleased to announce that the esteemed Meanjin (Brisbane) based proudly indigenous owned and operated cultural art hub Birrunga is coming to the Sunshine Coast in April. It will present the paintings of the talented participants of its Cultural Creative Development program.
Each of the seven artists in this exhibition titled Narawi – (waves, of the sea) draw from their rich Cultural backgrounds, using diverse mediums to share stories of identity, resilience, and connection to Country.
Through Birrunga’s Cultural Creative Development Program, these artists have refined their practice under the mentorship of established artists. Their collective works reflects a powerful fusion of Cultural storytelling in contemporary and historical frameworks, showcasing the strength and evolution of First Nations art in Australia.
This month also sees the introduction of CBFAC’s workshop program ‘So you want to be an artist and be able to eat. This intensive program features an exhibition by workshop participants and a solid 20hour workshop program over 4 days. The need to understand our journey as artists is important but then to articulate that is

not always easy. It was nice then to read about another artist, Sophia Cameron, exhibiting during this period in the Creamery gallery. Her journey as an artist started with her childhood growing up on a property in Central Queensland where she was able to hone her powers of observation. She talks about how nature provides endless inspiration – be it a shadow, the pattern or colours on a leaf or the light of the moon. Artists are observers but where they take their observations is the journey. Sophia’s exhibition titled Colour Hum is a celebration of memorable moments and experiences enjoyed in the Sunshine Coast region, expressed in vivid and pulsing colour combinations to reflect its unique and special hum.
Upstairs the CBFAC members gallery again presents the works of many talented

local artists. The members gallery provides a great opportunity to buy some very affordable and quality art. Likewise both the Birrunga and Sophia Cameron shows also feature some wonderful work to purchase.
The CBFAC would like to acknowledge that the Birrunga exhibition is supported by Arts Queensland. The CBFAC’s new workshop, event and exhibition program in the back gallery beginning this month (and running till mid-June) is proudly supported by Bendigo Community Bank.

10 YEARS OF CHANGING THE WORLD

TIM and Amber Scott’s journey with Kandanga Farm Store marks a decade of transformation and community-driven success, rooted in regenerative agriculture and sustainability. What began as a humble rural store has evolved into a thriving hub offering organic produce, education, and innovation in the Mary Valley.
Amber, a former agricultural business student from Brisbane, worked in the wool industry before becoming disillusioned with corporate life. After meeting Tim at University the couple moved to Western Queensland and their shared vision for hands-on, sustainable farming took root. After running a rural store in Augathella, they moved to Amamoor, determined to start their own farm.
With experience and a passion for sustainability, they established Kandanga
Farm Store. Their goal extended beyond livestock, prioritizing organic and regenerative methods in a community deeply rooted in conventional farming. Their dedication gradually transformed the store into a destination for locals and visitors alike.
As success grew, so did their community. The store became a hub for workshops and creative ventures, supporting artisans and hobby farmers. “We’re creating something with life, abundance, and diversity,” Amber shared. Looking back, they credit their success to resilience, loyal customers, and a committed team. “They may not call every week, but they always call us first,” Tim said gratefully.
As they celebrate 10 years, Tim and Amber look forward to another decade of growth, education, and sustainability. “Here’s to another decade of changing the world!”

Mob Pod arrives in Pomona A game changer for community health
ACCESS to quality healthcare has long been a challenge for many regional and rural communities, and Pomona is no exception. The arrival of the Mob Pod, a mobile health service designed to provide culturally safe and community-focused care, is a significant step towards improving health outcomes for local residents.
Operated by NCACCH (North Coast Aboriginal Corporations for Community Health), the Mob Pod will visit Pomona fortnightly, ensuring regular access to essential healthcare services. From general health checks to mental health support, chronic disease management, and telehealth consultations, the mobile clinic will provide much-needed care without requiring people to travel long distances. Residents from Cooroy, Cooran, Kin Kin, Mary Valley, and other surrounding regions are also welcome to visit the Mob Pod in Pomona to access healthcare services closer to home.
What makes the Mob Pod unique is its community-driven approach. We value community feedback and will work to tailor services to local needs. This means that, we’ll continue to deliver care not only to Pomona, but also to Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Curra, Imbil and beyond. We will listen to what the community wants and adjust our services, accordingly, ensuring

that the most in-demand healthcare options are prioritised.
Additionally, the Mob Pod is part of a larger research initiative. By studying how mobile healthcare services impact rural and remote communities, we aim to create a model that can be replicated and expanded across Australia, helping other regions benefit from this innovative approach. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the funding bodies for supporting this vision. Their investment is making a real difference, ensuring that people in Pomona
and beyond have equitable access to quality healthcare expanding the range of options for quality healthcare in the region.
This is more than just a mobile clinic—it’s a movement towards better health for all.
The Mob Pod is not only about treating illness but about strengthening community health, empowering individuals, and complementing our existing rural healthcare in Australia.

KOALA PARK

KOALA Park is a fantastic family destination offering a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and relaxation.
This lovely little park has a well maintained playground where the kids can play to their heart’s content. The adults can relax at the nearby picnic tables or make use of the BBQ facilities, making it an excellent spot for family gatherings or birthday parties - the public facilities ensure you have everything you need for a great day. Another great thing about the park is it’s dog friendly allowing families to bring their furry companions along as long as they remain on a leash.
This beautiful 16Ha eucalypt bushland located at 123 Panorama Drive in Nambour has a couple of trails that loop

around. The most popular trail is 1km. There is a slightly longer 1.5km trail branching down to the lower street level adding an extra layer of exploration. Both lead to a steep stairway that gets your heart pumping as you make your way back up to the entrance. Along the trail are some viewing points through the trees and a picnic table to rest at before tackling those stairs.
There are over 60 species of bird life including the Spotted Dove, Pacific Koel and King Parrot. Keep an eye out as the day I went I saw a large eagle flying over which was quite spectacular. The park also provides wonderful habitat for Gliders, Wallabies and Koalas. Unfortunately I didn’t see any Koalas the day I visited.
Koala Park offers a safe and enjoyable environment for the whole family. As always remember your water, hat and sunscreen. Happy hiking - Andrea.

Solar for low income home owners
HAVING solar installed on our homes is a great way to reduce our energy bills, but people in households at the lower end of the income scale are often disadvantaged as they are unable to install solar due to the cost.
Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN), is supporting people at the lower end of the income scale to have a small solar system installed at no cost to them .
“Low income households are often disadvantaged as they are unable to afford to install solar due to the cost,” said Mr Lambie.
“Homes with modest electricity use can save $400 to $800 per annum with a rooftop solar system installed,” said Mr Lambie.
“As we know, there are many people who are struggling with the cost of living and to pay their energy bills. Low income earners are missing out on the opportunity to save money on their energy bills by not having solar”, said Colin.
Mr Lambie says the Noosa Low Income Solar Project will give access to clean energy to 10 households that otherwise would not be able to afford solar.
To be eligible to apply for a no-cost rooftop solar system, you must be receiving a Centrelink payment, own your own home, and live in the Noosa Shire.
To apply, complete the online Expression of interest form. Completed

applications will be assessed based on eligibility and placed into a prioritised listing based on need and other factors. There is no guarantee of inclusion in the program from filling out the application and the installation of solar systems under this program is subject to available funding.
Applications close on April 30 or earlier if the project spaces have been filled. Apply now at www.zeroemissionsnoosa.com.au.

Native volunteer plants in the garden
PLANTING out a garden can be an expensive exercise, particularly if you have a large space to fill. Some gardeners like to propagate their own plants which can save a lot of money. But what if there were plants that self-propagate and create free plants with no effort from us?
Here we discuss 5 attractive native plants which will readily self-seed in your garden. They are suitable for small courtyards up to large-scale gardens, and will provide food and habitat for butterflies and other pollinating insects as well as native birds and frogs.

These plants can be considered ‘volunteers’ because they generously do the work for us without receiving anything in return! You can leave new seedlings where they pop up to fill gaps, transplant them elsewhere in the garden or even pot them up to give away to friends and family.
YELLOW BUTTONS –CHRYSOCEPHALUM APICULATUM

April in the Garden
TO DO LIST
April is a great time for planting, pruning, and preparing for cooler months. Trim summer-flowering plants, mulch garden beds to retain moisture, and plant native species. Check for pests like caterpillars and aphids, and start composting fallen leaves. With mild weather, it’s also perfect for refreshing lawns, fertilizing citrus trees, and dividing overcrowded perennials. Add organic matter to improve soil health, remove spent summer crops, and prepare garden beds for winter planting. Consider installing a watersaving irrigation system.
WHAT TO PLANT
April is ideal for growing leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and silverbeet, as well as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and beets. Plant herbs such as coriander, parsley, and dill. The cooler nights help root vegetables thrive, while still-warm soil encourages strong growth. Ensure regular watering and mulch to retain moisture.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES with Andy Flanagan
Mt Beerwahadventure routes
adventure routes
I AM now 5 years into my love affair with this mountain. So many friendships have been made and countless friendly conversations had with other users.
Mt Beerwah has such a wonderful atmosphere, it just makes people happy, its such a shame that our National Parks won’t or can’t (for whatever reasons) make it a safe place for the less experienced by way of trail markers, signage and a little infrastructure.
Many rescues could be prevented by adding a few markers to keep people on trails and away from troublesome areas that have had many rescues. Trail markers would also help to prevent unnecessary erosion.
I’m reminded of a holiday in Switzerland and seeing how well it can be done. The European alps are scattered with, free to use, Via Feratta (Klettersteig or Iron Ways) that provide regular people safe access to spectacular heights on the side of mountains that would otherwise require years of rock climbing experience and training.
Mt Beerwah has many routes, but the only one with even vague signage is Tourist (North) Route. This ‘trail’ takes you straight up to the base of the Organ Pipes (big visible cliff face), then traverses to the right along it’s base till the trail climbs again up to the summit
- a magnificent route, a huge challenge for many, and a walk in the park for some like me. Fortunately for my adventurous nature I have been invited to climb most of the alternate unmarked routes with experienced climbing colleagues. These routes are not for the faint hearted as they have significant height exposure and require competent and confident climbing skills. I dearly hope that one day they will be marked and made safe so that more can enjoy these spectacular scenes.
The first of these routes that I was shown was Beerwah East. It’s a meandering way up the east slope with lots of twists and turns, very easy to get lost but if you look very, very hard there are some old, very faint red paint marks that show some of the route. There are dozens of steep climbing sections which make it one of my favourites, plus it finishes with the sharp razor back to the summit.
Please note that there has been a big push, by a small group who claim Mt Beerwah as sacred and their own, to close this mountain. Mount Beerwah is walked / climbed / scrambled by tens of thousands of people every year for fitness, adventure, mental health, camaraderie escape, new challenges, tourism and likely a million other reasons.
It was formed 26 million years ago and over the past 100 years has become a

cultural icon of adventure and challenge for locals and tourists. I’ll finish here with a quote from one of my favourite childhood books by Dr Seus.
“So…be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Brayor Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea, You’re off the Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So...get on your way!”
Thanks again, Stay safe & best wishes, Andy Flanagan www.SaveOurSummits.

WORLD BODYSURFING TITLES

THE Sunshine Coast is set to host one of the most thrilling surfing competitions this April. The Festival of Bodysurfing kicks off with the Coolum Wedge competition before moving into the highly anticipated World Bodysurfing Titles 2025.
COOLUM WEDGE SURFING FESTIVAL
Thursday April 24 – Sunday April 27.

Bodysurfing represents surfing in its most authentic form—just the athlete, a pair of fins, and the power of the ocean. Without surfboards, competitors rely on their bodies to navigate the waves, adjusting their position to harness the natural energy of the sea.
For many, bodysurfing is an innate skill, often one of the first ocean experiences in childhood. While professional surfing and ocean swimming dominate global competitions, bodysurfing has quietly established itself as a competitive international sport.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Coolum Beach, this competition welcomes all age groups and fosters strong camaraderie. The beach itself is renowned for its excellent surfing conditions, making it a prime location for this exciting event.
INTERNATIONAL BODYSURFING WORLD TITLE FINALS
Monday April 28 – Wednesday May 7
For the first time outside of Hawaii, 96 elite bodysurfers from 15 countries will compete across five secret locations, with each venue chosen for optimal surf conditions. The world’s best will showcase their skills, culminating in the crowning of male and female world champions.

What a night for TEAM IMPACT!

ON Saturday night, we hosted our Annual Sunshine Coast Regional Championships, and what a night it was! This tournament was the biggest in our history and officially set a Boxing Queensland record as the largest one-day tournament ever held.
With over 200 boxers competing in 100 bouts, and an average of 600 people coming through the doors, this event was a massive success, not just for Impact Boxing but also for the Cooroy community. We welcomed fighters from all over Australia, New Zealand, and Nauru, showcasing the true spirit of international competition here in Cooroy.
How fitting that, in Impact Boxing’s 20th anniversary year, we hosted our biggest tournament yet. It feels like just yesterday we held our very first event at the Cooroy Town Hall (2005) where we witnessed 16 bouts, and back then, we thought that was a huge success! Looking at where we are now, I couldn’t be more proud of how our club has grown and how the Impact family and supporters have expanded alongside it. Our boxers put on fantastic performances,

securing some great wins and taking home valuable lessons. I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
A huge thank you to my wife, Kylie Evans, whose support is the backbone of these events. Without her, these tournaments wouldn’t continue to grow to the scale we’ve now achieved.
I’m also extremely grateful to the Cooroy community for their ongoing support. Seeing the positive impact this event had on local businesses—many of whom have reached out to express their thanks for the influx of visitors makes me proud to call this place home. Impact Boxing is built on

community, and I believe that’s why, after 20 years, we continue to grow from strength to strength. Thank you all for your continued support, I can’t wait for an even bigger and better tournament next year! Regards, Mark Evans

LLEW O’BRIEN Federal Member for Wide Bay
WIDE Bay’s volunteer groups play a very important role in community life, particularly during tough times when households are struggling with the cost of living.
The Volunteer Grants Program has historically been a source of funding that supports volunteer organisations including community service groups, sporting clubs and Veteran associations to make their work easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
There was strong interest in Wide Bay’s 2025 Volunteer Grants Program, with 67 expressions of interest seeking around $268,000 in funding for projects to support the work of volunteers in the community. However, the total allocation for the Wide Bay electorate was only $66,225 in this round, which unfortunately means that many worthwhile projects are not able to be funded under this round.
In 2025, I am supporting the Volunteer Grants applications from the Pomona and District Kindergarten, Pomona District Meals on Wheels, Cooroora Netball Club, Noosa Trailblazers Mountain Bike Club, Noosa District Rugby Union Club, Noosa Christian Outreach Church, Noosa District Netball Club, Kandanga Country Club, and the Mary Valley Blue Light Disco Association.
Every volunteer’s contribution, no matter how big or small, is extraordinary because that person cares enough to serve

their community and give of their time, expertise, and resources freely to improve the lives of others. Wide Bay communities would not be the same without them.
As we approach Anzac Day, it is an ideal time to look through old family photos, letters, and mementos from past generations, to help ensure our future generations can discover and connect to our military history and their own family heroes.
The Virtual War Memorial Australia (VWMA) is a digital commemorative collection created to honour the service and experiences of all who have served our nation, from the Boer War through to Afghanistan. The only memorial of its kind, the VWMA contains details of 1.5 million service personnel currently, and is expanding daily.
The VWMA is inviting Australians to participate in this important national story telling by recording the stories of individuals and capturing the experiences of the ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things through their war service.
The stories within the collection will serve as an everlasting reminder of the generations of Australians who chose to serve for a greater cause, for a reason bigger than their own comfort and safety. You can find out more by visiting https:// vwma.org.au.

COMMENDABLE COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO ALFRED
Residents, community groups, Council staff and partner agencies must be commended for being prepared for the potential impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The shire was lucky to avoid the damage experienced in other shires and our community has done a fantastic job in being well-informed and prepared. For us, it was a very valuable exercise and impressive
from the exercise. This cyclone tested our processes in the newly built Local Disaster Coordination Centre and was a good opportunity for the three levels of government to coordinate resources plus communications to, and from, the community. The cooperation, support and effort between all agencies was extremely professional.
That outward-facing, community focus was reflected through three levels of government via daily meetings with the District Disaster and Queensland Disaster Management Groups. The Tewantin-

The Queensland Government is also gathering feedback from business owners to shape future support.
If your business was impacted, I encourage you to complete the impact survey at www.business.qld.gov.au.
