Movember – changing lives and challenging faces in Eumundi By Trent Harvison

WITH November rolling around it signals not only the heady tentative early steps into an Australian summer, but it also trumpets the return of that rare Australian mammal – the Movember Man. Come the first of November, otherwise clean shaven and facial fur bereft individuals are suddenly propelled into a cat and mouse game with their razors as they challenge themselves to grow moustaches and change the face of men’s health, all in the name of a very worthy cause – Movember.

Movember is an annual event commencing in November for the month. From humble beginnings in 2003 with 30 guys, the Movember movement has grown into a truly global one, inspiring support from over 6 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters across the world. Funds raised go to support the three biggest health issues facing men - mental health, and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men are dying on average 5 years earlier than women and largely for preventable reasons – including where males account for 75% of all suicide deaths.

It’s not all about raising money though – it’s about beginning conversations and challenging men to reach out and seek support, and to create a culture where men feel safe in asking for help.

And the mighty men of Eumundi are banding together to again support this worthy cause. Since 2016, a rag tag group of misfits from across the region have joined the fight and ditched the razor. With the support of The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi, events are organised, beers are shared, funds are raised and conversations are started. This year there is a bunch of events organised and all are welcome - poker nights, frisbee games, outdoor movie nights – culminating on November 28 with a car rally across the Coast and a shave down. It all kicks off at The Imperial Hotel beer garden, Sunday October 31, 3pm to 5pm. To join in, for further info or to donate, contact Trent on 0458 128 020 or pop into the pub. And remember – “it ain’t scary to be hairy!”

SILLY SEASON STARTS EARLY

IT might not be Christmas yet, but celebrations just seem to get earlier and earlier. In October there is Halloween and November is booked for early Christmas parties and business functions and oh the food! It seems like everyone struggles with overindulgence in one form or another and it can be soooo hard to harness moderation. So here are a few tips.

Be prepared to always look for the healthiest options – think about what choices you are making and slow them down, look for vegetable sticks and dip instead of chocolate coated almonds or rum balls. Fruit is always a good choice with such a wide variety available – preferably not coated with chocolate. Prawns and seafood is a great option, just go easy on the sauces. Challenge yourself to try something new maybe hummus, tabouli, or even a vegan salad, you might find you really enjoy it. Healthy does not mean tasteless. If consuming alcohol try to alternate and drink some water between drinks – so after one or two beers or wines have a glass of soda/mineral water.

Overeating is common so don’t be in such a rush. If attending multiple gatherings on the same day take control of your choices and don’t bend to peer pressure, put your big girls’/boys’ pants on. Be mindful of how you are eating, don’t scoff your food, savour the flavours, taste, and texture, really enjoy every bite.

If you choose some decadent sweets or exotic rich foods, don’t beat yourself up about it. Relish it, revel in its texture on your taste buds, eat it slowly so you can really savour the sweet sensations and aromas. Take pleasure in the fact that its OK to have your cake and eat it to, don’t feel guilty.
