FESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS COMES TO COOROY

FESTIVAL of Small Halls is a series of tours that takes some of the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists and sends them on the road to halls in communities all over Australia.
Two fantastic artists are performing at Cooroy Memorial Hall this November.
Andrea Kirwin is an Australian-Fijian Artist/Producer based in Nambour on the Sunshine Coast. With a warm stage presence, retro soulful sound and a knack for storytelling, Andrea has been steadily building a national following since the release of her first album, ‘From the Ground Up’ in 2013.
With her percussive finger tapping, guitar playing wizardry, not to mention the alluring power of her voice, Tullara has an undeniable, uniquely endearing stage presence full of raw, powerful honesty, and swagger. This northern NSW homegrown artist – raised on a parrot farm - now based in Townsville, is taking the genre of Folk/ Roots to a whole new level.
Eleanor Rigden, Producer, Festival of Small Halls says “This tour puts some serious miles on the tour van – and we love it. The artists on this tour have blown audiences away in some of Australia’s largest festivals, but they’re also just wonderful people. Festival of Small Halls celebrates the best in communities – we’re so privileged to be welcomed in by each community and shown the best of their town.” Cooroy Memorial Hall Friday November 26, 6.30pm www.festivalofsmallhalls.com/cooroy-2021/

IT’S TIME TO RISE UP

Two amazing mums, one an author and one an aerials coach have collaborated on this masterpiece of a production. Rise Up - performed by the talented staff and students of local studio AerialCatz. The show is inspired by Annie Ant’s Awareness - a beautiful children’s book written by a local author Samantha Starshine.
The story follows Annie on her journey from anger to bliss as she learns through experience to understand the connection between her thoughts, feelings and actions. Through a beautiful combination of storytelling, music and apparatus - silks, lyra, hammock, trapeze, combination - this show will move and inspire the audience on many levels. Prestigious ceramic award hosted at Butter Factory
On Friday October 22 Ceramic Arts Queensland announced the Winner of the ‘2021 Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence’ at the exhibition’s Opening Event at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Nicolette Johnson with her vessel Nine Tendrils was the proud recipient.
The exhibition will host many wellknown ceramicists as well as a few new and exciting ones. Both the Butterbox and the Creamery will be filled with ceramic artworks in a myriad of forms and shapes from the finalists in the Siliceous Awards.
This will be the first regional gallery to host the exhibition so it is exciting for the Butter Factory Arts Centre to be the first regional host. The Butter Factory has a long standing history with potters as it boasts its very own pottery studio nestled alongside the historic building. The Arts Centre is proud to have a dynamic and thriving pottery community and throughout the year offers wheel throwing and hand building courses to beginner and advanced potters in the region. This award even features some of the Butter Factory’s own pottery members and will serve as inspiration to many of the emerging and established ceramicists in the community.
Dianne Peach, President of Ceramic Arts Queensland (CAQ) says “CAQ is committed to promoting and elevating the ceramic arts, not only in Queensland but nationally and this year’s 6th Award will be the largest prize Award to date, $7,000.” This year’s judge of the finalists is Diana Warnes, Head of Curatorial Projects at Home of the Arts, Gold Coast (HOTA).
Nicolette Johnson’s, Nine Tendrils
CAQ hopes that future awards may be mounted outside Brisbane in recognition of the vast regional and rural practice and appeal of ceramics. October 22 – November 28 Butter Factory Arts Centre 11A Maple Street Cooroy, FREE www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au

Art in extraordinary times
Artist, Darren White, has been part of Noosa Open Studios art trail for the past three years.
By Margie Wegener
RELAXING at sunset on the closing day of Noosa Open Studios, Peregian Beach artist Darren White opens up about this years art trail.
“People were truly curating their experience and because there are so many (artists) that works in everyone’s favour. If someone turns up to see your work it’s so intentional because they already want to see it. They have already engaged and looked further, and then it pays off. People want to be here and they want to understand my work and meet me or just see it in the flesh.”
Darren has been a part of Queensland’s biggest art trail for the past three years and attributes some of this years success to more people becoming familiar with his work but notes there were a lot of serious art buyers this year.
“I feel like this year more people were noticing and taking it seriously, unless it’s just my experience this year, but it feels like there were people who are truly looking to buy work.”
From the backyard of his home studio, relaxing with fiancé Claire and their two young toddlers we reflect on his recent success. It comes at a time where lockeddown Aussies are spending up on home renovations and art acquisitions, the benefits of which have flowed on to artists.
“We want to go buy art because we are not travelling. If you can’t go anywhere you spend your money on your home in some form, and art becomes some peoples form. Renovations are through the roof so then art is through the roof as well because some people have already renovated and now want to complete it. It just happens that I am getting more exposure and traction with art, at the same time that the virus has affected everyone.”
Online sales has been driving the demand for Darren’s work following an approach by Lucy Fenton, trend forecaster and curator of Fenton and Fenton, the online ‘go to’ for eclectic global art, homewares and furniture. The exposure increased his profile and commercial demand, delivering wider success. “I’ve just allowed it to come my way organically, because it’s the best way. But when that happened I already knew their impact and what a big deal it was. Everyone is paying attention to them, so that was an amazing moment.”
When I first met Darren in 2012 he was working as an industrial designer of medical equipment, just prior to he and Claire, a photo journalist, moving to live and work in France. Art was a side passion yet his unique talent was evident and he had already produced his first series of small landscapes on wood.
His free form, curious style and sentimental landscapes make it hard to quantify this artist with the analytical, logical industrial designer. How does one influence the other?
“I feel like it doesn’t at all. I feel like I just completely change my head space but I’m sure it has some impact. Maybe the main thing is in my materials. I really pay attention to materials. When I get settled on certain things I get stuck to the idea of how they work against each other, the friction when I am starting a painting. I really enjoy more friction. I’m sure that plays a part.”
More by chance than design, Darren’s muted, organic artworks complement current interior trends for earthy colours which take inspiration from natural elements.
“I mix my colours on the day. Mixing colour is part of the mood I guess. It’s all super enjoyable but mixing colour is really enjoyable. If you want to eat it then it’s the right colour!”
The meeting of colours, the expressive oil lines and the expertly built textures create evocative and rich landscapes reminiscent of coastal fringes and hinterland scenes. In Darren’s work there is a technical mastery that becomes as clearly evident as the tasty colour palette and misty-eyed nostalgic yearning. This could be the place where industrial designer and artist meet. www.darrenwhite.com.au
