WHEN Wally Albion, Graeme Byers and Eric Kenzler sat down for a few beers after a round of golf a little over 40 years ago in Cooroy, they conjured up and hatched an idea – and hey presto! a Sunday social golf club was formed.
The social golf event started in 1979 after spreading the word and getting plenty of support, with about 20 members finally getting the event off the ground, and numbers rising to about 80 players soon after.

Other social clubs jumped on board, forming similar events, coming to Cooroy to play, and from that an interclub competition arose between four teams.
The popular idea resulted in too many players signing up, so organisers devised a ‘best 20’ from each club to compete for a shield.
The shield in question was made by Pomona’s Page Furnishers, donating it to the Cooroy club, and each year’s winning team would henceforth keep the shield until hosting the annual comp the following year.
The years passed, but numbers dwindled through natural attrition to about 15 players about 20 years back. Then a fellow called Lester Bonnell stood up to run the club nearly single-handedly from thereon until his recent retirement.
Lester was a stalwart for the game - in fact the only time he couldn’t play was
Social Club memebers on a recent day trip to Gympie Sports Club
when he was called up to play Santa Claus on Christmas Day.
Numbers are now slowly rising again, with about 30 players involved, all of whom just want a good social day out. But there’s plenty of room for more, and you don’t have to match Tiger Woods’ handicap to qualify. Just show up.
If the idea of a leisurely social Sunday on the golf course with just a hint of friendly competition appeals to you, head down to Cooroy Golf Club at 6am on Sunday and give yourself a good time.
Everyone is welcome, you do not need to be a Pro, in fact the less experience the better! We run a different event each week from Stapleford to Monthly Medal with regular bus trips to other golf courses. You could even win one of our great prizes which include vouchers from local businesses, thank you to our great supporters and sponsors Wright Cut Meats, Cooroy IGA, Cooroy RSL and Cooroy Golf Club.

AUSTRALIAN BASS CLOSED SEASON
(FRESHWATER) Graeme Rummler, Borumba Fishing & Outdoors
THE Freshwater season is closed from June 1 to August 31 in all tidal waters including Kin Kin Creek, Noosa River upstream, and the Mary River downstream (Petrie Park Weir at Tiaro through Maryborough to the Hervey Bay Area).
The upstream section of the Maroochy River including the Maroochy North River and Petrie Creek are also tidal and closed.
Bass need saltwater to spawn for that period of time, once spawning is over they will start to head back upstream. Any Bass caught in tidal waters must be returned to the water, absolutely no keepers! This is always about sustainability of the species.
In any non tidal waters including dams, rivers and creeks there is no closed season, but practice catch, photo and release.

Australian Bass caught & released by Graeme Walker from Imbil on Borumba Dam.
The natural habitat for Australian Bass is from the Noosa Region through to Wilsons Promontory in Gippsland, Victoria.

The Cooroy Gymnastics Club has once again proved that you can still win through hard work at this years Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast. The small community club has produced five individual medals including three National Championships plus team silver at this years event. Cooroy had three athletes selected for the level 9 squad - Dean Chandler, Lyam Chandler and Finlay Jones with Cooroy senior mens coach Greg Smyth named team coach. Well done!
Impact ‘Young Guns’ fire up
IMPACT Boxing and Fitness Centre were excited to host its 'Young Guns' Boxing tournament last Saturday at the Noosa District High School.
It was the 11th year that the club has hosted its annual tournament in Cooroy and this one was possibly the biggest yet with over 700 people passing through the doors throughout the day and night. The tournament boasted a massive 57 bouts on the card. There were 44 clubs that attended from all over Qld and Australia. The bouts ranged from 10yr olds having their very first bout up to adults having their 100th bout.
The Impact team had six boxers competing with all six performing brilliantly in front of their home crowd. Paige Robinson, Jordan Stirling and Daniel Broadway all had convincing wins. Ruby Anderson, Kelsey Lloyd and Kieran Whitehead all went down by the narrowest of margins. Slade Gray had her first taste of being centre ring at the age of 10yrs as she climbed through the ropes to compete in an exhibition bout.
One of the highlights of the night was when Grayson 'The Peoples Champion' Keating entered the ring. Grayson has Down Syndome and has trained with the team at Impact for four years now. Grayson's opponent was team mate Ben Cameron-Hands. Grayson came out of his corner at the opening bell like a man possessed taking the fight straight up to Benny. Round two saw similar action as Grayson attacked the body. Round three and Grayson was relentless as he continued to attack Bens body until Ben could take no more and Grayson was declared the winner via a TKO decision. After Grayson had his hand raised in victory he quickly dropped to the floor and started his trademark push ups! The crowd were on their feet cheering for him and there were not too many dry eyes in the room at that stage.
“To see Grayson up their fills my heart with joy. He has this never say never attitude about him and he gives 100% with everything he does. He is such a character and an absolute champion to be around. He loves this gym, we are like family to him and he is definitely family to us. I am so proud of all these kids and how they have performed tonight. A big shout out to Ben Cameron-Hands for being Graysons opponent tonight and making Grayson feel like he is a World Champion. We are more than a boxing gym, we truly are one big family” Mark Evans said
“ I would like to thank all the businesses in Cooroy that supported this event with gifts from your business to go towards our mega raffle. Your kindness and support definitely did not go unnoticed with regular shout outs from our MC. Thank you also to my Team Impact army for all your hard work during the tournament and the lead up to it. Thank you also to Kylie for all your hard work. Team work, makes the dream work”
