Make the Most of October October is a month of change. We prepare for the winter at the same time as appreciating all this month has to offer. The startling range of colours from yellows, oranges and reds, beckon us, replacing any sunshine we may be missing. They encourage long, healthy walks in the woods, or maybe blackberry picking or tidying the garden. Even on cloudy days natural light stimulates glands that control the release of hormones, linked to our moods and emotions. So even if you feel low or tired, wrap up well and go outside, whatever the weather. The exercise and fresh air are guaranteed to cheer you up and you’ll be boosting vital Vitamin D levels too. The clocks go back at the end of the month unfortunately. Actually I’m hoping they

won’t! Sign up for the “Lighter Later” campaign, set up by 10:10, a pressure group pushing for carbon reduction and backed by RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Assuming they do go back, go to bed earlier and rise with the sun rather than sticking to your usual bedtime hours. Early morning exercise, anyone? Surely that’s better than a walk in the dark! Prepare the house for winter. Check for draughts and hidden dust and moulds, another cause of respiratory problems and easily removed using tea tree oil. Even though it may be cold outside, open the windows for ten minutes each day to air the house. Plants such as palms, ivy, peace lily, African violets and spider plants will help improve the atmosphere. Finally, the best thing about autumn is the harvest of bright berries, apples and pears and the huge range of fresh root vegetables, from humble turnips to the enormous pumpkins awaiting Halloween. Now is the perfect time to stock up on healthy carotenoids, the antioxidants found in orange fruit and vegetables. Try making roasted vegetable soup, using a varying mixture of carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, butternut squash, turnips and swede. Toss vegetable chunks in olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and roast for about half an hour in a medium oven, then blend with chicken or vegetable stock. Make a large amount, freeze portions and defrost in the morning, ready for the evening. Add different warming spices and herbs for variety. Thick soups like these are really filling and also slimming.

You’ll find numerous pumpkin recipes and healthy fun snacks to help celebrate Halloween on the internet and don’t forget the nutrient-rich pumpkin seeds, delicious and chewy, whether eaten raw, sprouted or roasted. To advertise call 01268 696404 or 07974 238657

Community News Dare You Enter The Museum? You may have seen a scary group of characters recently at the Canvey Carnival or Castle Point Show. Well, this Halloween they will be back on Canvey Island in an innovative new experience at the Castle Point Transport Museum. Castle Point Ghost Tours is the brainchild of Islanders Mike Hewitt and Lee Goodwin and is based on a type of entertainment popular in the United States known as “Scarefest.” The idea of such attractions is to provide the experience of journeying through a haunted location and organisers use many different techniques to achieve this goal. Mike and Lee first hit upon the idea of hosting what they call a “Haunt” after Lee’s first visit to America where he experienced one of the many multi-million dollar experiences available in the theme parks there. They both have experience in makeup, props, sound and video production and wanted to bring a terrifying new haunted attraction to the UK. They immediately thought of the Castle Point Transport Museum as the perfect location as it is one of the oldest commercial buildings on Canvey Island.

costumes, masks and prosthetics. As well as the main haunt, a number of attractions suitable for all the family will be available on the Museum forecourt including a Coffin Experience, Local Ghost Stories told on one of the Museum Buses and Trick or Treat Doors. A less terrifying version of the Haunt will be performed on the 28th, 29th and 30th October that is suitable for under 12s and although children will not be allowed in the main Haunt after 7pm there will still be plenty going on in the forecourt to see and do up until 22:00

Canvey Island Independent Party Grass Verges - It has been brought to the attention of the CIIP Councillors' that some of the grass verges outside your homes are not being cut.

Fire Station - Despite all the protests it looks as though the Fire Station will go to all retained crews by the end of October as the Fire Authority have turned down the Union offer.

Whilst it may be that they are not being cut as they are on private or unadopted highways, some are not being cut because they are listed as being “exempt. If you believe your grass verge is not being cut and it should be, then please contact Castle Point Council's 'First Contact' team for rectification on 01268 882200.

Traffic - Due to the ongoing by-pass to and from the A13 to Chelmsford at Sadlers Farm, the disruption to Canvey and Benfleet traffic will unfortunately continue for some time. Complaints can only be given in writing to Essex County Council Highways.

Litter - Please report litter to Castle Point Council's 'First Contact' team. Litter on many of our streets is picked up on an 'as required' basis. Most streets are monitored through the course of a year, but only the main roads are picked regularly. Please help us to ensure the Council's resources are distributed more equitably and report your streets and open spaces when you see litter 01268 882200

Street Lighting - Please send ALL your objections regarding the Street light nighttime switch off to the Chief Executive, Essex County Council, County Hall, Chelmsford. Let them know your views, don't just let this happen. The Canvey Island Independent Councillors continue to monitor and complain where necessary regarding all of the above - BUT residents letters and phone calls are essential.

The Lost Buildings of Canvey Island It’s a sad fact of life that nothing stays the same, but it’s also a shame that so many of Canvey Island’s unusual and historical buildings have been demolished over the years. Hotel Kynoch The Hotel Kynoch (above) was located 800 yards east of the Lobster Smack on Haven Road and was built in 1900 by the Kynoch Dynamite Company. Kynoch’s built the hotel to accommodate their directors and business associates. It proved to be an expensive investment! The initial building estimate had been £2,500 but a total of £7,000 was spent by the end of 1900 and opening was delayed until 1903. The Hotel ran until the mid 1930s and during the war, it served as an army billet and then became the offices for the London and Coastal Oil Wharves. Sadly, this magnificent building was eventually left to fall into disrepair and was demolished around about 1960.

An artist was commissioned to paint the interior and each room was decorated differently and some very rare photographs of these rooms can be seen on the Canvey Community Archive website at www.canveyisland.org. The hotel was never financially successful, especially as it was built just before the war. After the war, it was bought by Colonel Fielder who used it to house people and was eventually acquired by the council. A block of flats (Sea View Court) now stands in place of this unique building. Oysterfleet Lighthouse Where the Oysterfleet Hotel and Restaurant now stands, there was once a private residence by the lake. It had what was known as the “Lighthouse” in its back yard which was a most unusual kind of granny annex with outside steps to reach the upstairs bedroom.

Canvey Island Football Club At the time of writing, we sit in a top 5 position having lost our first games of the season before winning our next 5. We then went on to lose at home to Bury Town which had as much to do with poor decisions by the match officials rather than a poor performance on the pitch. Still, 15 points out of a possible 21 is a very solid start which hopefully we can build on as the season continues. Our last game before this column was an FA Cup 1st qualifying fixture against the Airport Men of Stansted FC who ply their trade in the Essex Senior League. We produced a solid and professional performance to win 4-1 with Danny Heale scoring a hat trick. So into the hat we went for the 2nd qualifying round which saw us drawn out at home again against Conference North side Bishops Storford which will be played on Satutrday 1st October. Whilst they are a division above us they are still struggling so we go into the game confident we can get a good result and move another step closer to every small clubs dream of drawing a big league side in the later rounds. Our Academy side (above) who play in the National Colleges League, kicked off their season with a very good 3 - 1 home win against Aylesbury. This is a very competitive

league with opposition such as Chelsea, Barnet, Wycombe Wanderers and Watford to play against. The lads play their matches at Park lane kicking off at 2pm on Wednesday afternoons. Entry is free so if you can why not pop along and watch a very good standard of football. Their next 2 home fixtures are: Wednesday 12th October - Borehamwood Wednesday 2nd November - Watford Congratulations to our Youth Club, Canvey Island Youth FC who again held a successful 11 a side tournament at Waterside Sports Centre at the beginning of September. Local teams and many from outside the area took part in what has always been a very well supported tournament since it started 20 years ago. It took a huge amount of work and commitment from the organisers and long may it continue to be a success. Off the pitch, our Bingo night on Sundays starting at 6pm continues to be a big success with cash prizes to be won. Come along and join in the fun - we also play Open The Box and Play Your Cards Right games. There will be a Halloween party held at the club. Please keep an eye on our official website for more details about this and other events.

October in History 14th October 1066 The Battle of Hastings took place on the 14th October 1066. It was one of the bloodiest and most important battles to be fought in Britain. The fighting began at about 9am and lasted for most of the day. The battle was fought to keep / win the English throne with Harold, King of England, fighting hard to keep the throne against his opposition William of Normandy, leader of the Normans. The two armies met at Senlac Hill which is about six miles from Hastings and King Harold was killed. It is believed he was shot through the eye with an arrow. The defeat of King Harold led to the beginning of the Norman Conquest of England. An abbey was subsequently built on the battleground and the settlement of “Battle” formed. A plaque marks the spot where King Harold is thought to have fallen. The famous Bayeux Tapestry (above) depicts the events leading up to and including the Battle of Hastings and is currently exhibited in a special museum in Bayeux, France.

festivals celebrated in the world today. Halloween has been described as “a perfect example of superstition struggling with religious belief.” The festival dates back thousands of years. Halloween dates back over 2000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. October 31st was the Celts’ New Years Eve as they celebrated the end of what they called the “season of the sun” before the “season of darkness” started on 1st November. The Celts believed that evil spirits came with the darkness and that on October 31st the barriers between our world and the spirit world were at their weakest. On this day, the Celts would build sacred bonfires where people would gather to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Gods to protect them from the evil spirits. During these ceremonies costumes made from animal skins would be worn.

The first Christian missionaries travelling across pagan Europe avoided changing the ancients ways but incorporated the beliefs into Christian ideology. In the ninth century, the Catholic church made the 1st November “All Saints Day” when all the saints would be remembered. “Hallows” is an old word for Saint, hence October 31st became All Hallows Eve, which evolved to “All Hallows Eve” and then Hallowe’en, or as we use it today - Halloween. 30 YourisCanvey To- one advertise call 01268 696404 or 07974 238657 Today Halloween of the oldest

Are you looking to raise funds for your non-profit organisation? Local businesswoman Marion Irving brings a brand new concept to the Castle Point area with the “Peel2Save Card” a imed at raising funds for charities and good causes. The Peel2Save fund raising card is a no-risk way for charit ies, churches, schools, sports clubs, youth groups and other non-profit organisations to raise much needed money. Peel2Save prov ides a great opportunity for them to raise money quickly and easily, with no risk. If they sell just 100 cards they will have raised £500 and selling 1,000 cards would give them £5,000 – which would make quite an impact on anyone’s fund raising target. The credit card-sized Peel2Save cards fit neatly into a purse or wallet and contain 64 individual peel-off coupons with each coupon promoting money-saving offers and discounts fro m a great local business.

Peggottys, Les’s Cycles, Kebab & Burger Hut, The Bay Café, Village Chinese, Hed Candi Hair & Beauty, Raspberry Ripples Coffee Shop, Rays Quality Dry Cleaners and Fitness 4 Life are all featured on the card with very generous offers ! Marion Irv ing told us “Peel2Save is a fantastic idea. It has been working brilliantly in the USA fo r many years. It’s a real co mmun ity initiat ive, giv ing local businesses the opportunity to promote their businesses to local people. The offers have real value and broad appeal and there is something for everyone. Anyone who buys a card will soon recoup their money and will have also raised funds for a charity or good cause. It’s a definite win -win for local businesses, good causes and local consumers.” The local Peel2Save in itiat ive is hoping to raise £30,000 in the Castle Point area for charities and good causes over the next twelve months. They are currently available fro m The Roo ms, 361 Long Road, Canvey Island who are raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Peel2Save card is now available and is valid fo r 12 months. It contains many great offers fro m 27 d ifferent loca l businesses, with the value of the offers well over the £300 ma rk! Castle Point Pubwatch “Keeping Socialising Social” - that’s the message from the Castle Point Pubwatch, a group of 33 Bars, Pubs & Clubs across Castle Point. What is the Castle Point Pubwatch? In essence, the Pubwatch is similar to a Neighbourhood Watch but instead of local residents forming a network group, our group members are local businesses (licensed premises) working together to keep troublemakers out of our pubs and bars, and reduce anti-social behavior and crime. The Pubwatch is currently Chaired by Alun Johnson of the Windjammer, Canvey Island and the Vice Chair is Julie Wheatley of Riley’s Snooker in Benfleet. The Treasurer is Janet Woolcock from the CK Bar, Canvey Island.

Banned) A scheme to ban violent offenders from Bars, Pubs & Clubs in Castle Point. The Behave or Be Banned scheme was launched to reduce the number of violent or public order incidents in the area and stop offenders from entering licensed premises. The decision on whether to ban people and for how long is made by the Pubwatch committee and any venue can nominate a person for consideration for a ban. Individuals being arrested for violent offences at licensed premises will automatically be referred to the Pubwatch by the Police for consideration. We want you to get in touch!

The Pubwatch has launched a brand new website which contains lots of information What we do! for local residents. Our news section is updated regularly, delivering information The Pubwatch consists of managers, directly to you and you can also use the ‘Get supervisors & owners of licensed venues who in Touch’ contact form to send us your aim to promote the positive attributes to comments and feedback. drinking alcohol and socialising in Bars, Pubs If you have any comments, concerns or & Club across the Borough. feedback relating to any member premises Working with Essex Police & Castle Point you can contact the Pubwatch directly and in Council, we share information on confidence by a dedicated pubic email troublemakers and activities that are likely to address public@pubwatch.org lead to or promote crime & anti-social or visit our brand new website at behavior in licensed venues, making them safer and more enjoyable for the majority who just want to socialise and enjoy themselves.
