YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS

A Note From The Editor Staying Positive During The Holidays By Lisa Wilson loved ones on items that will be used for a good month before being shelved, broken or lost. I never understood what celebrating the “true meaning” of Christmas meant but I’ve learned. When you wake up on Christmas day and don’t see the person you were expecting to spend the day with it stings, it hurts, it’s flat out sad. No matter if it was 1 year, or 20 years ago, the pain is still there. Never let anyone tell you it’s time to get over something so tragic that has happened to you. There are ways to get through it and ways of learning how to deal but it still hurts. It was your friend, your mom or dad. It was your aunt, uncle, cousin, grandma or grandpa. It was someone close to you. Don’t be ashamed because of your feelings. Sometimes we just need to cry it out.

I don’t know about you but the

Holidays have become a challenge for me. I remember Christmas being my absolute favorite holiday ever. I was so happy to open presents with my family Christmas morning so bright and early. We would often go to Disneyland or somewhere fun as a family because it was also my dad’s birthday. Now, things have changed. My father passed away almost two years ago, and since then neither Christmas nor the holidays have been the same. I often think I’m okay. I’m dealing just fine with it all. Then the holidays come up and you realize how sad and hurt you still are. Maybe some of you can relate. I look around now and see people spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their

Despite what has happened to me, this experience has really opened my eyes to something so beautiful. It has made me realized that we don’t live forever. That each of us will have our time when our loved ones will no longer get to experience our joy, laughter, personality and love. And when you understand that, you get to appreciate the people in your lives so much more. Your arguments become fewer and you start to not hold hate inside your heart. When I wake up this Christmas I’m going to look around and appreciate everything that I have around me and just be thankful for the people in my life this time and smile.

DYLAN HYDE HE’S GOT NEXT By Lisa Wilson

Dylan has a voice that reaches angels. A humility, that

can't be taught in a million classes and a passion that's only found in the greats. Dylan Hyde is one that can't be cloned. And it’s safe to say he’s got next! This young star that is being compared to many talented singers today, is on his way to being one of the biggest artists out. The young crooner has traded in his rock star look for slacks, a tie and blazer. Having gain quite the success on the Internet, Dylan continues to gain new followers daily. Now the teen is working hard recording in the studio for his new album and working on a web-‐series. He recently traveled to New York to talk to teen vogue about his new projects as well. We caught up with the young teen to ask him a few questions about what's to come with this up and coming superstar!

Describe yourself in one word? Dapper How did you come up with the word ninjas as your fans? It was just something that kind of happened. I love the game ninja and I just thought that the fans should have 7

something they could call themselves that wasn't just an attachment of my last name. What's the best part about pursuing a career in music? And hardest part? The best part is being able to profile my dreams. I’m being given a one in a million chance. I'm very blessed. The worst part is just that sometimes I get a little home sick. But that’s not even a big deal. What are your plans for the Holidays? Just being able to kick back with my family and have a great time. Write some music. I don't know. I don't really want to take a break from all the music for very long. It’s too much fun! How does the writing process happen for you when you begin writing a song? Do you have a favorite location? Start with the chorus? My favorite location(s) are my bedroom with just a candlelight, or this park by my house. It’s beautiful at nighttime. If I'm at the park lyrics are first. Usually just starts off as poetry in that situation. But at home in my room it could be either or; I don't have a specific formula. The inspiration tells me what to do; it all depends on my mood and everything like that. Writing is my main hobby. (Continued on next page)

If you are from the United Kingdom and in search for British food, or just enjoy the cuisine, look no further! The British Grocer, located in Downtown Fullerton, can meet your “British” needs for the food and products. Owner Jacky Wyld has had the shop for 25 years. The British Grocer was originally a gift from her late husband Doug Collier who passed away six years ago. But Jacky carries on their tradition. Fullerton became the location because her husband saw great potential here. “[There’s] a lot of British people that want British food,” said Wyld. With China everywhere and plants, it feels like another room in your house. Because the store is full of many intricate pieces, it can take a while to walk around it. The store appears to be split up into a section that has all the food while the other section has beautiful china and other knick knacks like cards and decorations. Selling items that are all imported from the United Kingdom, the shop is very unique. Although the products are from the United Kingdom, they can be considered different, even though they have same brand name as the products in the United States.

People know many things about Joey Diamond. He's good looking. He has an amazing voice. And his YouTube channel has over 42,000,000 views! Yet perhaps if you didn't know, Joey is more than just a talented artist. He has a heart worth more than diamonds. He not only makes videos of his music but also letting people know that treating others with respect should be a top priority in our lives. And no matter how big he gets, he's thankful for his family and friends that help keep him humble. The young artist who got big on YouTube after a video he made for a friend blew up, has been able to see his dream come true by becoming a full time artist. Now Joey is touring throughout the states giving his fans the opportunity to see him perform live. His new album "Diamond Are Forever," just debuted last Friday and can be bought on iTunes. Continued on Next Page

It’s so much more. My dreams have become a reality in front of my eyes. It’s been a blessing to perform over 2000 people. It’s a struggle. Sometimes you don’t see the hard work. But my managers keep me sane and my family keeps me humbled. 10

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS Tell us about your up coming tour and how you feel about it? I’m very excited about the Diamond tour hitting a lot of cities. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be able to perform in front of my army. Tell us about what we can expect from your album? It’s about relationships I had, some I wish I didn’t have. It’s me writing my music, best form of expression of love. (Laughs) Do you have a routine for songwriting? Right now a lot has started as poetry. But I like to start with the chorus first. Then first verse then second.

You’re a hit on YouTube! How did that happen? I didn’t get the solo I wanted in show choir but I was determined to get the spotlight. Actually for my best friends birthday I made a video on YouTube and then when I started checking it was getting over a 1000 views weekly. Then one million views. What do you know now that you didn’t know before you started pursuing your dream as an artist?

What advice do you have for other young artists wanting to pursue their dreams? Realize this is the only thing that’s for you. Once you realize that you stop at nothing. Don’t let others hate and doubt. FUN FACTS ABOUT JOEY! 1. Favorite snack? Hot Cheetos with cream cheese. You have to try it if you haven’t before.

Being an artist is more than fame and money. It’s hard work and responsibility.

2. Favorite game? Life the board game. We would play it for our family day.

Artists tend to have names for their fans, Gaga has her little monsters! What do you call your fans and how much do you appreciate them?

3.Favorite Song? Dance with my father again. I love the soul and energy to the music.

I didn’t officially give them a name they started naming themselves by putting Diamond at the end of their names. But I like to think of them as more than fans but family. The diamond army. They have my back. I have theirs.

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS Every artist would agree that social media is free publicity and it makes the work of an A&R somewhat easier. As social media continues to become more and more apart of our lives I look forward to seeing who’s the next big thing.

CAL STATE FULLERTON EXPEREINCES LOCKDOWN ON CAMPUS Cal State University Fullerton experienced a lockdown at probably one of the most inconvenient times for students. It was Finals Week. Four robbers traveled from Moreno Valley existing off the Nutwood exist in Fullerton trying to hideaway at Cal State Fullerton.

The First Of His Kind By Auxaviair Carter Time has brought about change and I’m not talking about Obama either. More like Greyson Chance, Karmin and of course Justin Bieber. With the help of social media, being an entertainer has never been easier. YouTube is now the number one source when it comes to discovery of musicians with twitter right behind it. With more media outlets surfacing, it’s only going to get easier and harder at the same time. For those with real skill and or talent all it takes is a tweet from someone famous mentioning your YouTube video and voila you got a shot. Or you can go the Bieber route, have an amazing voice and sing cover after cover after cover after cover (singer must have amazing vocal skills or look really marketable). J.B. was one of the first people to gain fame from social media. He could have chosen the American idol route but some how I don't think he would have been as big. Fast forward a few years later and the dude is one of the biggest icons in music's history.

Around 4pm Wednesday afternoon, a campus message was said through an intercom. There was danger on campus and students needed to be locked down and remain in classrooms or whichever building they were in on campus. All classes for that night were cancelled. Students began to feel anxious, scared and nervous. Around 8pm buildings were being evacuated and students were beginning to go home.

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS Who came up with the name "The Charlies" for your group? The name kinda found us. It comes from The Charlies Angels. Us being three girls, different hair color, fighting crimes at night and doing music at day, it just made sense ;) Also we were on the phone in Iceland with a former co-worker here in the States, doing tasks and figuring everything out before we moved to L.A so it kinda turned into "hey Charlie, hey Angels".... so today we are The Charlies :) You've worked with many GREAT producers in the industry, Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, The Movement, etc.. Tell us about the experience of being able to work with many great producers and what you've learned from them?

Charlie Has New Angels By Lisa Wilson Charlie has some new angels and they can sing! They may not be kicking butts on the streets but they are kicking butt in the music industry! Teaming up with some of the industry's hottest producers, this band is on their way in making a huge dent in today's music scene. Their unique sound and style full of swag, instantly have people craving for more of them. Right now they have released their mixtape, "Start A Fire" and have featured their music video "Hello Luv" on YouTube. Check out what they had to say about their music below!

It’s been amazing to be able to work with these great producers. It’s a dream come true to get into the studio with all of them. Many of them we have looked up to and admired for years. We have absolutely learned a lot, been able to work with the best in the business in the best studios in LA. Even though we have done a lot in Iceland the music business here is way bigger and a very different world from over there. It has been a huge learning curve for us to be able to work in this environment with some of the most amazing songwriters and producers in the business.

How did this band come together? We were brought together in auditions in Iceland, years ago by our Icelandic manager, Einar Bardason, sort of the Icelandic Simon Cowell. We went in the auditions not knowing what they were for and only when he had picked the three of us did he sit us down to tell us he wanted us to be a girl group. A month later we released our first single that went straight to no 1 and the rest is history! haha

How was it being able to work with Jukebox for your latest single, "Hello Luv." And tell us about the song "Hello Luv?"

(Continued on next page) 14

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS

Working with Jukebox has been incredible! Our manager Darryl Farmer brought us together last year and since we've grown to be good friends. We always have a lot of fun when we get to work together! We fell in love with "Hello Luv "when we heard it the first time. The beat is so different and interesting and that song is a perfect combination of the music styles we favor! It's a cool mix of Pop and R&B. The little rap part of the song makes it very interesting too. It's definitely one of our favorite songs so far. Go get "Hello Luv" its on Itunes now! Was it hard to leave loved ones when you had to relocate to LA? Absolutely! We are far away from home and it was hard leaving everything behind but at the same time we are living the dream and we wouldn't want to be doing anything else. And we are very fortunate to have amazing families and friends who have our backs and have supported us every step of the way. So that soothes the homesickness :)

Our upcoming mixtape/EP will be out in January next year, 2013, and it is like a sample of what our album is going to be like. It is a mix of Pop, R&B, Hip hop and randomly enough a hint of a little country rock in some of the vocal production. It's over all driven by fun, sexy and well produced beats that will make you wanna sing along or get up and dance! We are very excited about it! What is your ultimate goal as a group? It's simple really - Own a whole pile of Grammy's, Countless no. 1's singles and albums, clothing line, perfume, touring the world and general world domination! hahaha! Are you currently working on any new projects that your fans should know about? We have one project in the works that we are very excited about but it is a secret still. We will reveal it in the beginning of next year. It does have something to do with TV though. Won't say more yet!! Who's your favorite band out today? Beyonce is obviously the queen of everything right? haha! She is simply perfect to us! But we also love Rihanna! We adore and admire that girl! Her character, her style, her voice and amazing talent keep us inspired and on our toes!

Tell us about your new Mixtape, "Wild as summer" and what you want your fans to get from listening to that album?

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS Tell us about your new single send me a picture and how it was to collab with Jacob Latimore? Are you coming out with a video for this single anytime soon? It's was good collabing with Jacob. It was natural like we knew each other forever. Shooting the video was really fun too. It was all night and we had really great chemistry with the girls in the shoot and Jacob and me just bonded together. It’s like we made magic on camera. The video should be dropping in January. When’s the album dropping? Spring of next year. What’s been the best part about being able to have this rap career? Hardest part?

Determined By Lisa Wilson

Young Marqus, like any other kid his age loves to play sports and videos games on his spare time. Yet, what separates him from kids his age is the fact that Marqus is making a name for himself through his music career. The young artist that has been seen on tour with Lupe Fiasco, has been getting a lot of attention with his delivery of his flow and inspiring lyrics. The artist who just released a single with teen r&b sensation Jacob Latimore, “Send Me A Picture,” is getting ready to release his album for 2013. Check out the interview with him below. Do you have a special gift you want this year for Christmas? The new Jordans. The cool grey nines.

Best part is doing what I love. The hardest is what people are going to think of me. Are people going to like my music? It's hard to compete with yourself. If I drop my second album are people going to anticipate it sounding like my first. That's the hardest part wondering how people are going to accept you. Who is your biggest supporter today? My mom. She’s amazing. What are you doing when you're not working on music? Writing music, playing basketball, hanging out with my friends, stuff that kids do.

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS What sparked you interest in acting? Nothing intrigued me more than the craft of acting. I see it as a brilliant art form. Good actors have the ability to pretend to be someone else and make it so believable, that it can affect people on an emotional level. I have always wanted to impact people in that way. Acting is the one medium of Art where I am most challenged. It requires something a lot more deep from me than what is on the surface, and that I enjoy. How do you get ready for an Audition?

Make Room Hollywood By Michelle Tuyub “A star is not made but born." A belief that actress Tashimah Lanay Evans holds true. Tashimah loves that she can impact people through her acting. Through her life Tashimah has demonstrated, her ambition to act and perform. She has been in films Stomp the Yard and The Kissing Bandit and appeared on the hit MTV show Yo' Momma. Stay tuned for this actress, whose goals are to be a lead in a movie.

It depends on what the audition is for. If I am only reading for the role of a coffee shop worker who says, “ coffee or soda?” It doesn't really require preparation. For those auditions that require work, I usually will work on reading the script, so that I can get a sense of what the character wants or needs. Then, I memorize the script, and work! I like to actually engage in whatever the character is doing, so I can feel it and make it real. If the scene is a young wife doing laundry talking to her child, then I will do laundry and find a child to borrow :-) it helps, so that when I go into the audition room or tape the audition I can best deliver. If you're just starting out in acting is it best to take any role given to you even if it's a non paying or wait for a paying gig? In the beginning it shouldn't be about the money, but a love of the craft and growing. Start by taking classes and learn the basics. Extra work is great in the beginning, so that you can gain an understanding of what it is like to be on set. Find student projects to be a part of, so that you can put into practice what you are learning. Who are some of your favorite actors/actresses today? Denzel Washington is one of my absolute favorite actors. He has the ability to take on a character and leave a lasting impression on the audience. Denzel is a true artist. (Continued on next page) 18

WWW.YOUNGCELEBRITYNEWS.COM There is also the great Meryl Streep who finds a way to find herself in each character that she plays creating a captivating performance. Do you have a specific goal you're trying to achieve as an actress? I want to make a living of what I love to do! It may seem like an obvious, but I have to be very deliberate in my approach to my career, so that I can make it to the point where I am able to survive and live, because of my acting career. I look forward to being a Lead Actress in film and theater. I want to be able to work on a diversity of roles, and not just a genre specific actress, but be able to capture it all.

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS What do you think someone needs in order to make it in today's industry? You have to have to be resilient. It is key in not driving yourself (or your family and friends) crazy :-) Do not let other people’s opinions of you effect you belief in yourself. Be confidant in who you are and allow your work to silence your naysayers. Follow Tashimah Lanay Evans Journey: @TashimahLanay www.facebook.com/TashimahLanayEvans

Are you more into theater? Or tying to get into film? I fell in love with the theater when I worked on my first stage production Behind the Music. I love the way you can connect with the audience and let your self go on the stage. Film is different, but I enjoy that as well. I just love acting! Whatever way I am able to express myself, I want to take full advantage of it. What's the hardest part about striving after a career in acting? The emotional roller coasters you can experience as an artist. You literally will hear 1000 no's before you hear the 1 yes. People really have to understand that and be prepared for those challenges. When I start to feel overwhelmed. I pray and regain focus. How do you get past disappointments in this career? I understand that in this business there will be disappointments.

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS In one sentence tell us who is Richard Schmieg? I’m just an ordinary guy who writes music with the hope of inspiring others to live a not-so-ordinary life. How did you get into music? My love for music started as a young teen. I enjoyed listening to bands like Blink-182, Smash Mouth, and Red Hot Chili Peppers and really loved memorizing the words to all my favorite songs. I received my first keyboard when I was 14 and started learning all the songs that its memory banks had to offer. After listening to The Rocket Summer's album "Calendar Days" as a sophomore in high school, I fell in love with the art of songwriting. I started writing my own songs and making demos for family and friends and the rest is history! How important do you think music plays in the lives of others?

No Ordinary Life By Michelle Tuyub Singer and songwriter Richard Schmieg has "No Ordinary Life". Along with doing music, he also has Bachelor's of Arts in Comparative Religions and a Minor in Christian Studies. Goodbye Luna, which was formed when he was 15, has already performed at some of the biggest venues including Joshuafest this past September. "No Ordinary Life," which was an EP released earlier this year has been getting quite the buzz. Expect a music video for one of the singles on the EP Passerby soon. Check out the interview below!

I think music is an extremely important part of our lives, whether you play an instrument or not. Music has the power to inspire us, make us laugh and cry, it can bring back deep feelings and emotions and it can offer songwriters like myself an outlet to relate to others and express ourselves in a meaningful way. Where has your favorite performance been so far? I had a lot of fun playing Joshuafest in Plymouth, CA this past September. We got to play alongside some of my favorite bands including Relient K, Switchfoot, and The Classic Crime. The band and I have made some great friends and fans up in Plymouth. Do you still get nervous before going on stage? I really don't get nervous before performing anymore. I know that whatever happens, I'm doing my best and the crowd's excitement usually helps dissipate any fear I might have anyway. I'd probably get a little more anxious in front of bigger and bigger audiences.

20

WWW.YOUNGCELEBRITYNEWS.COM Are you working on any new projects ? At the moment we're working on recording a music video for our single "Passerby." I'm really excited about that. I've also been working on some new songs the past few weeks with the hope of recording and releasing them in the near future. Hopefully a longer EP or maybe even an LP! Tell us about your songwriting process? And how you create a song? For me, songwriting is more than a job. It's one of my favorite hobbies and it's really an outlet for me to put shape to some of the feelings and meaningful (and sometimes funny) ideas in my head. When I write a song, one of the most important things for me is the setting in which I'm writing. I've got to have relative quiet and privacy around me...kind of a cocoon if you will. After I've found that (usually behind a closed door), I really have to start with a combination of a lyrical hook or title, mixed with a great melody. Without those two coming into the writing process, I usually don't mess with a song too long and I'll end up moving on to another idea. After I've got the general form of the song down, I can take anywhere from minutes to days to hammer out the right words to get my thought across. I think it's really important to seek out feedback for your songs too, because if one person is confused with your word choices, chances are a lot more folks will feel the same way. Do you have any traditions that you do before a show? We don't really have any pre-show traditions that I'm aware of, but whenever time permits after a show,

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS the band will go out for food and/or drinks. I think it's so important to spend quality time over a meal with the band, partly because they're some of my best friends and partly because we're usually starving after a long show (or a long drive to a show!). Tell us about your EP that came out, No Ordinary Life and the meaning behind it? No Ordinary Life is the first official release for my new solo project. To me, this EP represents a huge shift in the direction of my life. Last year I had a really crummy job and it got me down for a long while. But during a train ride from Orange County to San Luis Obispo, I realized that I had a whole lot more to live for than doing something I hated for the rest of my life. So I started writing the song "Passerby." I've never felt so tied to the meaning of one of my songs before. It's the true story of how I felt at that job, and how I know I've been made for something greater. And I feel that way about each and every person, too. We've all been given gifts and talents and passions and it would be a shame to see those things go to waste. As the second track on the EP, "Wake Up Call" says, "Rise to your feet, the morning breathes a sweet symphony of hope." I really wanted to encourage people to wake up to a warm, steamy mug of hope every morning. Call me old fashioned…but I'm stoked about helping people. Do you have any advice for other young artists striving to make it in the music industry? For anyone pursuing a career in music, I believe that you'll get out of it as much as you put in. You've got to know exactly who your audience is--what other bands they are listening to, what brand of maple syrup they prefer, the names of their pet gerbils. You've got to actively pursue your fans and listen to them. You've got to do at least one thing to further your career every single day. You've got to listen to A LOT of music and find your sound. And most importantly, be yourself. If you're transparent and not full of yourself, people will enjoy supporting you for years to come. But work hard! 21

YOUNG CELEBRITY NEWS Afterwards Jeff and Tony ended up pushing on without Chris. It was at that point they started shopping around for a new name. The town that we originally grew up in, Manhattan Beach, is divided into a few areas based upon real estate slang. There’s the Tree Section, the Hill Section and of course the Sand Section. We were all from the Sand Section, and it sums up our lifestyles pretty well. We were always surf bums. It’s embarrassing saying we’re from Los Angeles now because at this age in our 20’s LA is often times related to the Hollywood types but we never associated with that scene at all. Our roots will always be in the sand.

An Honest Sound By Michelle Tuyub Tony Gonella and Jeff Nisen make up

the group Sand Section. Their name was inspired by their hometown of Manhattan Beach. Sound Section influences came from bands like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Dispatch and the Beatles. The group focuses on staying true to themselves and what they love in music. Sand Section's music talks about true feelings and the things they face in life, always leaving an honest sound to their music. Their goals are to leave a legacy with their voices and have people always remember the name, Sand Section. Who came up with the name Sand Section? Tony’s mom actually. Jeff Nisen and Tony Gonella were in a band called Moss before Sand Section. The lead singer’s name was Chris Moss and the band had a falling out of sorts.

Tell us about making your new album that just came out and the meaning behind "Still Life?" Jeff wrote “Still Life”. It’s the title track off the album. It’s actually a pretty emotional song about a falling out with a friend of his. The main theme is portrayed through the line ‘Still life flows on like a river to the grave, it’s not about who you hate, it’s who you save.’ Essentially meaning that even though someone may have given up on themselves, it’s no reason for you to give up on them. It’s trying to encourage someone to reach their full potential, but it’s kind of lamenting the fact that they have yet to do so and may never will…It took him about two years to write and his friend and him ended up coming full circle in the process. It worked perfectly with the album because we had some rough water with the band, but we’ve landed on our feet and we’re moving on with a brand new, fresh start. That’s what it represents to us, anyway. Describe the sound of your band in one word? Honest.

What's the best part about being in a band and the hardest part? The hardest part is breaking up. The next hardest part is keeping a band together. Jeff and I have done both and that’s when this album was written. The best part for me is singing harmonies. Who writes the songs for the group? Jeff Nisen and Tony Gonella write all the songs, sometimes together, sometimes a part, but there are always harmonies.

Check out their CD Release show NEXT SATURDAY December 22nd at The Hollywood House of Blues Foundation Room! And pick up a copy of their album on ITunes. Make sure to keep up with Sand Section at: www.facebook.com/sandsection

How do you guys want to grow as a band?

www.sandsectionmusic.com

We’re currently working on some serious radio play. An opening spot with a nationally touring act would be the next step after that. Either would be a dream. We’ve been in the trenches for a while now.

@sandsection

Do you guys still get nervous before you have to go on stage? Do you have a tradition that you do before every show? I think we both get nervous but I don’t think either of us would admit it to the other. Pre-show ritual…tequila shots? What advice would you give to a new band just starting out? Find your own sound. You can chase what’s trendy your whole career but you’ll never catch it. How do you want Sand Section to be remembered? We want to be remembered as good songwriters. The big entertainment acts back in the 30’s and 40’s used to be three man teams—you had your performer, your lyrics writer and your melody guy. The performer is always the one who ends up in the history books but I think it’s the songwriters who get the satisfaction of having moved so many people through their lyrics and their melodies. In the industry these guys don’t get forgotten but I think they’re quite literally the unsung hero’s. We want to be those guys—with a voice. 23

Q: Tell us about your relationship prior to her getting Alzheimer’s. A: The relationship between my grandma and me has always been a very special one. She and my grandpa helped raise me, and she was like a second mom to me. She always encouraged me to believe in myself and live my dreams. She taught me how to garden and how to cook. My grandparents have always been there for me. They are known for always helping others, so it’s only natural that we are helping them. Q: When did your grandma get diagnosed with Alzheimer’s? A: It’s been about 10 years. Up until a year ago, my grandma was still able to live at home with my grandpa.

Ten years ago Courtney Morrison got the news that her grandmother who helped raise her growing up, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It's easy for many when faced with difficult situations to immediately give up or have someone else deal with them. In fact, there are many homes for individuals with this disease. Yet Courtney's family stayed prayed up as a unit to get the strength they needed to be there for her grandma. In the same way Courtney recalls her grandma taking care of her, she is able to help take care of her grandma. Though not easy by any means, Courtney continues to give her whole heart to be there for her grandma. We talked to Courtney to see what this all meant for her and her family. Check out the interview below.

Q: What did that mean for the family? A: Of course, you never want to see your loved one going through an illness. What made this so hard is that this ugly disease has no cure. All we could do as a family was stay in prayer, make sure we kept grandma comfortable, safe, eating well and continue talking to her and treating her like ”normal” … not like someone that doesn’t always remember us. We had to make sure we kept my grandpa’s sprits high as well. They have been married for 60 years and my grandma means the world to him. Gramps still tells her everyday that she’s beautiful and he loves her. My mother has been amazing through it all. She was the one that took the lead in helping my grandpa get the proper medical attention and care grandma needed. Before we brought my grandma to live with us, my mom would travel to Sacramento frequently to help grandpa care for her. The prior year when I walked, she was still in Sacramento and had been in and out of the hospital. This year she and grandpa are in southern California living with us and were able to participate. My mom pushed her in her wheelchair for the 3 mile walk! Our team of family and friends raised almost $2,500.00. Participating in these kinds of fundraising events is rewarding and helps us feel like we’re making a difference.

Q: How has your relationship changed with grandma? A: My relationship with my grandma is still as strong as ever. The roles are reversed and instead of her taking care of me, I’m taking care of her. She has always been the sweetest lady I’ve ever known. She is still very loving and gentle and her smile melts my heart. She’s so beautiful, I love her beyond words. Q: Tell us about the race you did, The Walk To End Alzheimer’s, and what that meant to you. A: The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a 5k friendship walk held in different cities across the United States to raise awareness and funds for research and treatments so that one day we will find a cure! This was my 3rd year participating. It was extremely special to me because it had been a year since I became my grandma’s caregiver.

Q: What advice can you give to someone who just found out their family member has this disease? A: The best advice I could give anyone is to Pray! Prayer has helped me so much during these times. It has helped me to stay positive. I pray for my grandma’s well being, my grandpa’s strength, my family’s perseverance. It helps alleviate the stress I sometimes feel as a caregiver…prayer works! Also, become educated about Alzheimer’s and Dementia signs, care, and resources. Join support groups. Be an advocate for your loved one to find the right doctors and health care team for their specific needs. Keep your family member in familiar, safe environments around people that love and support them. Show patience, love, respect, kindness, affection and humor. I love making my grandma laugh! The effects of the disease are so different for each individual. Use strategies that have worked for other caregivers and be creative in finding what works best for your family. Find ways to support each other as well, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Take time to care for yourself emotionally, physically and spiritually. Continue to do things that bring you joy!

The heart forgot its mittens amidst this cold Condition called love Rewind What did you expect? Who did you expect it from? Why do you expect? To insure The delivery of a word

WOMAN

To be assuredly secure

by D. Love

Enough with the rhymes and metaphors Let’s delve into the real

The greatest joy ever felt

The core

Embraced by the unequivocal

Woman, trust thyself

Undeniable plainly spoken words

Let none fool you

Enveloped by Truth, catering not to the total

Into placing on a shelf

Indulgence of mistaken emotions

Your heart to receive none less

But rather genuine and unique

Than what it’s worth

Perfection at its peak

Unveil the truth of its emotional contents

Giving of an endless reserve

Walk with your head held high

Diving to the core of the meaning

Smile, because he was good

To serve

But always remember

Then served on a silver platter

There comes, better, then best

A case of mistaken identity

And you deserve none less

Reciprocity did not respond at role call

By the looks of you I fear your expectations I lay asking myself what can I offer you? What would someone with so much soul and prestige Be doing loving and spending her whole life with me, In all honestly, my life with you I visualized it

"A Dreamer's Woman" by Shahrukh Zamir

God sent you here for me, the feeling I can't describe it,

We began as two lost souls floating in the air,

Waves splash of matched personalities,

Unwarily aware waiting to be united, Who could or would ever stop to think,

We dived drowned in the ocean of chemistry,

That I’d be the one to spend your entire life with,

Your clutched hands rubber band my destiny,

A beautiful piece of flesh, heaven scented

Cliché it seems yet truly believed that you were meant for me,

God graced with a beauty that sparked,

I daydream about you while typing Z's in my speech bubble,

Strings on her eyelashes reciting melodies To which became the song to our hearts, She polishes my skin with her cottoned touch, Drenched in delicacy, softened with lost love, Our lips bond together like street riots, Echoing strong yet calm enough to seal my lips quiet, Our eyes gaze ever last without once becoming sore,

Wondrous, anxious, joyful for we fit in place like a perfect puzzle, Imperfect I lie, yet perfect through your eyes to see, Eager to share with you my love deeper than eternity, Deaf to knowing inside hearts chosen is where our future lied, A God gifted life from the skies was made to be my wife,

I am not the man of your dreams wishing woman,

My burning heart lit with love for only yearns for she,

Yet you’re everything I dreamt for, And you know that I know that I know that you know, 29

Eternally knowing that her loves shared with no one but me
