EDITOR’S LETTER It's said that with 6-point-something billion people in the world, that everyone, somewhere, has their doppelganger - a twin from another mother. We are also encouraged to believe in a parallel universe, where our earthbound selves live our lives in opposites: the city banker here, becomes the busker there, and such. When making Counterpart, we wanted to acknowledge that no man (or woman) is one dimensional, you dont live your life only fiction or non fiction, you don't ever sit in one camp - you take a bit of both. Perhaps you were the child who wanted to mix the blue and the red slushie together because you preferred purple, the child who played with their food at family dinners, or simply someone who, now, picks up a tabloid and a broadsheet on the long commute home. Whoever you are, we hope you find yourself comfortable in either one of the halves of our magazine, but surely even more comfortable having both together in one publication.

WELCOME TO COUNTERPART.

RENT BEFORE YOU BUY

Commitment problems? Then allow us to introduce to you the Art Tasters Circle, an online art gallery that allows you to test drive your next masterpiece. Picture this: you’re lounging around in your flat, staring at that empty wall space thinking it could do with a touch of, let’s say, 1920’s Neoplasticism - well, seventy pounds will see an Art Taster’s advisor turn up at your doorstep with a bottle of red in tow, so you can peruse their online catalogue of 50 emerging painters, photographers and sculptors. You choose the piece, decide on an installation date and they bring it over and introduce it to your wall. If by the following week you feel the sudden need for a postmodern nude posing with a peacock (Neoplasticism is so passé), simply call up your advisor and have the previous painting replaced with a new. With each piece you don’t commit to, you’ll be doing your part to support a burgeoning artist, with a monthly fee going toward your eventual purchase. http://www.nascentartny.com

GET SMART

KEEPING IT SAFE

With titles like ‘Pygmalion in Management’ and ‘Power is the Great Motivator’, we can’t get enough of Harvard Business Review’s classic pocket size management series. Each volume provides a wealth of insight on all managerial aspects from power (and how to keep it) to becoming the ideal manager. A must read for any discerning worker seeking to foster high morale and commitment in their workforce! Oh, and if that didn’t pull you in, did we mention the snappy graphic covers?

We know you have valuables, and you probably own a fridge too. You might even have vegetables inside that fridge. And now next to those tomatoes: a safe disguised as a realistic looking head of Iceberg Lettuce. Designed with a secret compartment, the bottom of the lettuce conveniently snaps off revealing a secret hiding place to store your cash and valuable knick-knacks. This is certainly the ideal place to hide those valuables from carnivorous burglars.

Ultrasuede - IN SEARCH of HALSTON No one represented the seventies quite like legendary American designer Halston. In his new documentary ‘Ultrasuede; In Search of Halston’ director Whitney Smith takes us on a utterly fabulous, sexy fun-and-fact filled journey through the designer’s life and times. With an extraordinary array of interviews with various cronies, cohorts, commentators and witnesses of Halston’s empire (Liza Minnelli, Anjelica Houston, Dianne von Furstenberg, Billy Joel and Naeem Khan to name a few) – ‘Ultrasuede’ certainly raises the bar for fashion documentaries. http://www.halstonmovie.com 6

TWIST, POUR AND ENJOY As we all know, life requires caffeine. But sometimes, you (or even your intern) simply don’t have the time for a coffee run. For those stressful occasions, there’s the Mypressi Twist, the worlds first portable espresso machine. Yes, that’s right, portable. The handy sceptre looking gadget comes in at just under 12 inches long, weighs less than 500g, and makes what is probably the finest portably brewed shot you’ve ever tasted. Chuck it in your hand bag or pop it in your briefcase, along with some ground coffee or standard espresso pods, and you’re all set to impress those around you with your impeccable baristering skills. http://www.mypressi.com 7

CREAM OF THE CROP THE ORIENT EXPRESS To celebrate their World Exposition in Shanghai (1 May – 31 Oct), Prada have created a colourful capsule collection or urban living influenced accessories, bags and shoes. Bright, fun and playful the collection fuses the synthetic with the organic, featuring imagery of Shanghai’s iconic Pudong skyline with butterflies, flowers and greenery. Prada’s cultural exchange pageant holds the theme ‘Better City, Better Life’ and it is with this theme that Prada translates its ideal representation of our future city into the collection. http://www.prada.com

ALL IN THE JEANS

SLATHER ON THE SAKE

Introducing Kyoku Sake Infused Shave Cream, a new balm that’s, pretty much, exactly what it sounds like. A magical ointment containing ancient Japanese face-healing secrets that takes the sting out of shaving – not to mention it’s a socially acceptable reason to smell like sake before noon. This stuff is like regular shaving cream, but with the key addition of sweet Japanese rice wine. The result is a cream that feels buttery to the touch. The addition of sake to the cream helps soften the skin, increasing oxygen delivery, leaving your face smooth and satisfied. And thus the secret of the sumo’s super soft baby skin is revealed!

Like the little black dress, a pair of killer jeans is a wardrobe staple – which is exactly why we’re investing in R13 Denim. Reinterpreting last season’s boyfriend cuts into cropped harem trousers, slouchy-but-slim, and drop-crotch styles, R13 gives the old denim classics a fresh look. Battered, relaxed, soft and comfy – mouths are watering over their Spring 2010 collection, and our pins are itching for a pair of their Droopey Wreck Dark jeans. Now available at Selfridges.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY Your face is like no other, so if you’re going to wear glasses they should be special. They should be one-of-a-kind, they should be bespoke. Indivijual Custom Eyewear, a new online shop that tailors your specs to the unique contours of your face, are now taking orders. Custom designed and tailormade, ICE will send you a ‘precision fit’ kit, complete with paper ruler for measuring your face, and a portable nose mould (it’s easier than it sounds). On completion of submitting a rigorous personality test, which asks for highly relevant pieces of information like your wardrobe preferences, skin tone and your favourite kinds of furniture, a very slick looking PowerPoint presentation will come your way with a preview of the design. Six to eight weeks later, you’ll have your shades. Which, oddly enough, matches your bedside table. http://www.indivijual.com/ 8

PUGH ARRIVES IN HONG KONG

With nine runway shows under his belt, ex Central Saint Martins graduate Gareth Pugh has been doing some heavy thinking about the future of his brand, and has decided to open his first store. Pugh has chosen an unlikely destination for his starting point to global domination – to be opened next month in Hong Kong, Pugh’s brick-and-mortar store will be nestled in between fashion legends Comme Des Garcons and Maison Martin Margiela on Ice House Street. http://www.garethpugh.net

STYLE FOR SALE

BOOKMARC

If there is anyone out there who has a few thousand pounds to spare, and a fondness for couture and bespoke head wear, then this is the moment you’ve been waiting for: the couture collection of the late Isabella Blow is up for auction by Christie’s on 15 September. With over 90 Alexander McQueen outfits, 50 hats by milliner Philip Treacy and shoes by Manolo Blahnik, this is one of those times we wish we saved more.

It seems Marc Jacobs never misses the opportunity to flex those creative muscles of his. His latest venture comes in the form of stationary. The Marc Jacobs Bookmarc (get it?) collection includes stationary tins, coloured pencils and pencil case sets, each priced at £6. Take these into your exam and we’ll guarantee you’ll pass with fashion colours.

It is regarded as one of the most important meals of the day and a morning ritual we’d rather not sacrifice. Whether it’s a bowl of miso or baked beans on toast, a hearty breakfast is the best way to kick start your day. We’ve treated ourselves to bring you a selection of our favourite traditional continental morning delights.

14

EspressO A staple of any Italian breakfast is this popular punchy shot of coffee. One sip of this will perk you up for the day. Downing this caffeinated beauty is a sure way to kick those Monday morning blues away. Cannolo; Tubular, crunchy, sweet and creamy, there’s not much to complain about when it comes to this Sicilian delight. Admittedly not one of the healthiest of breakfast choices, but with it’s smooth, creamy and citrusy filling, who can resist? For Don Altobello, it was a good way to go. La Repubblica; Get informed with our Italian morning media pick, la Repubblica. It provides the perfect news analysis from Rome and beyond. No Berlusconi influence attached. 15

The fry-up Despite it’s ‘heart attack on a plate’ reputation, the English fry-up is a dish we’ll happily tuck into. Conceived during the Industrial Revolution as a form of fast fuel for the working class that actually worked, there’s no better morning after cure than to feast on this calorific plate of (mostly fried) goodness. Poached eggs, fried mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, streaky bacon and a slice of buttered toast - this is the breakfast of Kings. We take great therapeutic pleasure in hacking into a poached egg, watching its golden silk-like yolk explode and soak its neighbours.

16

Zhuk Asia’s answer to porridge, there is no better way to wake up on a frosty Winter’s morning, than to a steaming bowl of rice congee. Comfort food minus the calories, ‘zhuk’ is considered to be food therapy for the unwell. If this is the cure, we’ll happily welcome the flu. We like ours with diced century egg – get passed it’s ‘eat first think later’ appearance, and you’ll be rewarded with a taste like no other.

Hong Kong-style milk tea; A key component to any Hong-Kongers breakfast is a cup of ‘naai cha’, or ‘dai pai dong’ milk tea. Made from a mix of various types of black tea (the proportion of which is considered a ‘commercial secret’ for famous milk tea vendors), evaporated milk and sugar, this cup of tea is in a class of its own. Intense in flavour and smooth on the palette, this is the perfect start to a lazy Sunday morning.

Yauh zha gwai; Directly translated as ‘oil-fried-ghost’ this long golden-brown, deep fried strip of dough is the perfect congee accompaniment. Tastiest when sliced or dunked whole, we’d like to see more of these on our local take-out menus.

17

BREAKFAST BURRITO We can completely understand why this is a favourite of Ozzy Osborne’s. Guacamole, refried beans, brown rice, scrambled eggs, sour cream, salsa and cheese (basically everything but the kitchen sink), all wrapped up in a soft tortilla for our eating convenience – how thoughtful! Rolled up and ready to go, we love this perfect dinewhile-on-a-dash breakfast. We’d definitely get out of bed for this!

18

LE Croissant When it comes to croissants, the bigger the mess of flaky crumbs covering your plate, your table, yourself, the better. Light, moist and airy inside, a quality croissant should have the taste and smell of freshly churned butter. Delicately crispy on the outside and cloud-like tender on the inside, the croissant sure is one beautifully buttery pastry – one of these served warm from the oven will lead to instant and pleasurable gratification.

Chocolat chaud; Smooth, creamy and utterly satisfying, this morning indulgence has value beyond pleasure. Packed with antioxidants that protect the body, chocolate helps to keep your heart and cardiovascular system running well. Not that we need an excuse to feast on chocolate in the morning.

Confiture de lait; Made by boiling milk with sugar, confiture de lait is a thick, creamy, caramel spread layered in cakes and biscuits, as a topping over icecream and spread on toast. Slather this oh-so-sweet shiny beige spread on your croissant, and you’ll be transported to gastronomic heaven.

SHOPPING IN

L.A

Photography and Text GLENDA GOLDSCHMIED

Los Angeles has money to burn - the recession is as good as forgotten about in the mind’s of the women in shopping hotspot, Melrose, and the recent succession of openings of British labels has only boosted spending on the Place - with this in mind, we took a trip stateside to see what was taking in those hard saved dollars.

20

Melrose Place has been creating some stiff competition for the famous brand studded Rodeo Drive. Since the opening of Paul Smith and Alexander McQueen, there is no denying that it is the new fashion Mecca of Los Angeles, and dare we say, it was about time! The next Brit to educate Southern California on fashion is designer Vivienne Westwood. Years after closing her New York flagship, she is ready to do it again. Locals are already buzzing and dreaming of being able to shop Anglomania, Gold Label, and Red Label all in the same place! “I feel like this should have happened years ago”, says Marika Amegah, who works at the store Diavolina, which sells Westwood. “L.A. is trend based, therefore if people aren’t used to seeing your product its not likely they’ll keep buying it.” Starting this summer, this won’t be an issue any longer, the two storey retail space will open in June. Team Westwood seems to be on an ongoing momentum. The new Man store, which only opened in March of this year, across from the London flagship on Conduit Street, proved to be a struggle to get off the ground, but is now making good business. One can only hope that the success will carry over to the new Melrose location, and that the British invasion on retail America reigns supreme, once again.

21

Former Maxfield employees Rodney Burns and David Malvaney have decided to ditch the uptight institution to open a space of their own. On a particularly quite strip of Santa Monica Boulevard, the structure is completely covered in ivy with no clear signage in sight other than a ‘dead end’ road indication. Upon realising is it in fact the store, you are immediately attracted to its imposing wooden front door, which actually serves no real purpose, as it is just a decoy. A strategy to further weed out unwanted clientele? Perhaps. If so, well done on that point! The real entrance is strategically situated on the side of the building, almost completely immersed in ivy and with a black spray painted cross coming out of the doors aluminium surface. We can’t remember the last time going to church excited us this much. But then again, no church we ever went to looked this good. Originally built in 1946, the building encompasses 5000 square feet of pure industrial space. The second floor was torn down to give way to the enchanting skylights that, with the constant Los Angeles sunshine, provide a mystical cathedral-like lighting. Ropes run to and from the store’s ceiling, suspending dresses made of old parachutes, while a selection of random antiques decorate the walls. The store carries a carefully chosen selection of some of the most exciting LA based designers, with more than 80 different labels in stock. The collections are scattered through the store within a mix of taxidermy and Victorian sculptures, making it feel more like a museum than a retail space - no entrance fee’s applied – of course!

A HOUSE BECOMES A HOME Photography and Text GLENDA GOLDSCHMIED

We headed over to Los Angeles to visit the home of designer Jerome Dahan from Citizens of Humanity, who with the help of interior designer, Michela Goldschmied, has been converting his multi-million dollar shell of a house into the home of his dreams.

24

“The concept of the home is that Jerome, my client, loves color, but the challenge was not making the house too feminine”. Jerome Dahan, designer for the denim line Citizens for Humanity gave Michela the keys to his new multi- million- dollar house in Santa Monica California and simply said, “I trust you”. Their friendship spans back more than a decade, before the denim designer could imagine owning a house in one of Los Angeles’ most expensive post codes. Walking from one room to the next, there is a sense of falling deeper into the rabbit hole. From English Farrow & Ball wallpapers, to Bisazza mosaics, to flea market finds, the house is an “eclectic mix of different styles that don’t follow any particular scheme, but that distinctly reflect the desires of the inhabitant”. The living room is the direct representation of this credo. The understated but crude sexual imagery dominates the room, literally, in the form of an Ingo Maurer chandelier depicting geishas in Kamasutra positions. Juxtaposing this with regal touches like the French antique fireplace frame and the numerous Hermes ashtrays creates an “irony in the end result”. These different styles and elements come together to create a room that is warm and inviting, despite the clear depiction of social taboos, especially sex. “Decorating is about creating a space that the client can find inspiration in”. Frankly, between geishas, Newton books and design furniture it would be hard for any man not to find inspiration in here. 25

RECOMMENDED 1. BROWNS; 40 YEARS OF FASHION This limited edition first ever Browns book is a definite keepsake. Crammed with never before seen fashion images by esteemed photographer Paolo Roversi, ‘40 Years of Fashion’ is the perfect coffee table book for any fashion conscious person.

1.

2. EAMES MOULDED PLYWOOD LOUNGE CHAIR Does this ergonomic piece of design really qualify as a chair for ‘lounging’? Not really. Yet we’re bound to give it a chance. It’s just too pretty to ignore. 3. EAMES STOOL Is it a tree? Is it a chess piece? No, it’s actually a very interesting stool. There’s not much more to say about this perfectly carved chunk of wood really. We wouldn’t exactly call it ‘comfy’, but what the hell; it’s comfort for the eyes. 4. PERSIAN RUG The easiest way to pull a room together and bring an automatic sense of warmth to any interior, the Persian rug is the best way to create an exotic ambiance. Beware. It’s all in the ‘how cool’, not the ‘how much’. 5. HERMES ASH TRAYS At £400 each, smoking never looked this good. Place these (it’s gotta be at least three) beautifully designed porcelain ashtrays on your coffee table for an instant living room upgrade.

7. 6. CHRISTIES ENAMEL LACQUERED JEWELLERY BOX You might, or might not, have enough jewellery to fill this ornate box, but you might as well not need it. The thing is, the container is so precious in itself, people won’t dare touch it.

8.

7. GRAHAM & BROWN WALLPAPERS It may seem old fashion, and a bit reminiscent of grandma’s house, but when you can choose anything from surrealist prints to jazzed up florals, this is one of the best ways to spruce up a room. Try mixing vibrant solid colours with vivid patterns for a truly psychedelic effect. 8. CHINESE ENAMEL LAMP Whether the lamp is from Christie’s or Chinatown, it will no doubt ignite a mysterious atmosphere to the space around it. You’ll get the usual ‘Wow, that’s such an elaborate drawing’ which is exactly what we’re aiming for. You may not need another lamp, but we know you simply can’t resist. 9. DIPTYQUE BAIESE NOIR SCENTED CANDLE Presented in a black frosted container, Baiees Noir scent recalls a bouquet of roses and blackcurrant leaves. Light this baby up in the height of Autumn let the passion burn.

9. 10.

10. STEVE MCCURRY: THE UNGUARDED MOMENT This striking new portfolio of Steve McCurry’s is bursting with imagery from his trips to Asia, including the famous “Afghan Girl” photograph that captured audiences worldwide. Expect to be further mesmerized with each turn of the page. 31

Off ON THE RIGHT FOOT Photography and Text MELANIE TONG and ALEX O’BRIEN

We decided that today’s man needs to smarten up his act. In a city full of bare-foot hipsters and tarnished pumps, there is a call for boys to grow up and become the man their mother’s had only dreamed of raising, starting from the sole. Some men collect ties and cufflinks, others collect socks. Be they neatly rolled and packed into drawers, or stuffed into shoes and spare corners, socks are the accent of a man’s personal style. With a plethora of lengths, weights, colours and patterns, matching sock to occasion has been known to cause some men considerable distress. Plain or patterned? Wool or Cotton? Garters, you say? To simplify things for the inexperienced sock shopper, choosing the right material is the first step in your quest, and we’re on hand (or foot) to help.

Cotton: High quality cotton socks are made from Egyptian Karnak cottons whose long fibre lengths permit the spinning of extremely fine yarn. Cotton socks are suitable for everyday wear. We recommend these chequed turquoise Tabio’s.

42

Wool: Only hardwearing merino wool is suitable for socks, other wool types are too soft and too fleecy for the task. We suggest you try a pair from Harvey & Hudson.

Cashmere: So soft and so warm, luxurious cashmere is unfortunately not hard wearing, but with strengthening of man-made fibre, it becomes much more durable. If the feeling of pure cashmere is what you’re after, we suggest slipping on a delicious pair from suit-maestro’s, Dunhill.

Silk: There are silk stockings‌ and there are silk stockings; the determining factor is the intensity of the twisting in the thread. Apart from pure silks, inferior qualities and recycled products exist. It is a fallacy that silk does not wear as well as other fabrics. Silk is actually the strongest of fibres, stronger even than steel. Silk is also an excellent non-conductor of heat. We recommend this pair from Tabio for the warmer seasons of work life.
