between composure and seduction (2009) This work was commissioned by Annalisa Zumthor. It is inspired by the clean, spare, bright, yet uncompromising design of Peter Zumthor, who was first an apprentice cabinetmaker before becoming an architect. The title of this work comes from his book, Atmosphere. Special thanks to the MacDowell Colony. Instructions: 45° bowing –Bow at an angle across the strings. The sound should be very irregular and unstable. Do not allow the sound to become stuck on a high frequency.
Vertical bowing–Drag bow vertically along strings, in the direction indicated. This will produce a primarily noise-based sound. It will be necessary to also move the bow slightly in the normal horizontal direction to produce enough sound. The sound should be continuous.
Sweep bow–Quickly brush bow back and forth, in the upper half of the bow. There should be very little pitch produced, mostly a soft rustling sound.
Pressure – Apply enough pressure to distort the sound produced. The sound should be a mix of noise and pitch.

! sul ponticello – Close enough to the bridge to slightly distort sound and bring out multiphonics, but not close enough to produce a true sul ponticello.
When applied to a fingered note, the detuning should produce audible beating. When applied to a harmonic, the detuning should produce a multiphonic. It will be a combination of noise and pitched elements. The distance needed to detune the notes may be larger than a quarter tone, depending on the instrument.
! As high as possible. This will vary depending on whether bow is sul pont. or sul tasto. There should be no discernable pitch.
Tremolo – Fingered tremolo between highest note possible and open strings.
Trill to detuned harmonic Glissandi – All glissandi are harmonic glissandi. Never depress the fingers down while executing. Wide Vibrato (when so marked) should encompass approx. a whole step in either direction. Pressure vibrato – Used when left hand is as high as possible, off fingerboard. Rapidly depress the string up and release.

Percussion: 3 Tom-tom (large, medium, small) 3 Chinese Scream Gongs (Large, Medium, Small) 2 Crotales (preferably one in A and a higher one in Bb) 2 small (8”) cymbals that ring a half-step apart 1 large suspended cymbal to be bowed 1 medium suspended cymbal 30” Feng Wind Gong 40” Wuhan Gong (or Tam-Tam) 2 Bass Drums (22” & 20”) played with pedals (soft sheep wool beaters on pedals) Woodblock
Each Scream Gong is placed on top of corresponding sized Tom-tom.
