age temperature in our region has been -30 degrees Celsius, I would like to pull the same challenge out and ask how you might overcome this now — but of course don’t cut it off right now! Going without power for 2 weeks really shows you how much electricity can be taken for granted or help you to appreciate just how convenient electricity can be in your life. When people tell us that one day they plan to live off grid I challenge them to keep their home

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay

Several months ago I presented a challenge to everyone. I simply asked everyone who was considering going to a new alternative energy, or wanting to offset the energy bills to cut off their own power for at least 2 weeks. Now I realize that this is quite easy to do when it is spring, summer or fall but considering that the past week the aver-

warm and operating, without using their regular utilities. Because first and foremost whether you have a small alternative energy such as a small solar panel and maybe a fireplace or purchased a large wind turbine or generator at some point you may be faced with simply keeping your home warm if all else has failed. This is the way with all energy that is created so it is wise to think ahead, and prepare. Many people we talk to think that preparing for an emergency makes them look like they are afraid and that they are

responding to fear about the sky falling or the world ending. I have a statement for that, “To be prepared is too wise when it’s needed and considered foolish when it is not”. Purchase a small propane heater and tank for under $250, a small solar panel with a deep cycle battery and charger for $300-$400 and even a small generator for $500-$1000 and rest easy. Other things such as a small cook stove, emergency food and water supplies will never go bad, and never be an unwise investment. Once you have covered the basics, take the

challenge and see how you handle even 24 hours and I assure you will gain great insight about your readiness for life off grid. Living off grid is rewarding and will challenge you in ways only the pioneers could relate to, but it is a great hope of mine that everyone is ready to face winter and that you have some solutions and are not left helpless. That is not fear based, it is based from care and concern. To live On Grid is easy to maintain and gives us convenience and time for us to prepare for other

measures, off grid means you are up for the challenges and are willing to solve the issues that come up with a smile. I am not asking to do anything extreme, nor be afraid to consider what might need to be done to in an emergency. For more info, check out our Facebook page at Problem Solved Alternative or email us at service@myps247.com. Business diploma gets new look for 2016-17

In the world of business, a diploma is in demand. That’s why Parkland College is rolling out a new and improved Business program for 2016-17. The one-year Business Certificate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic has long been a popular program at Parkland College.

MEXICAN BEAN SOUP Your first spoonful of this, and you’ll almost think you’re somewhere

Many students find the certificate is a great way to get their foot in the door and start their careers. However, opting to take the second year of Business classes can open up a whole other world of possibilities. “Talking with the business community in our region, a diploma is definitely in demand,”

said Coordinator Connie Brown. “Grads will find they are eligible for more positions and advancement in their careers.” The second year of Business at Parkland College has a new area of focus for 2016-17. Students completing the two-year program will graduate with a Business Diploma with Management

Specialization. The diploma puts extra emphasis on leadership, conflict resolution, employee engagement, and strategic management. Students who have already completed a Business Certificate may enroll directly in the diploma level. Other students may enroll in Year 1 of the program and,

upon completion, may either graduate with a Business Certificate or continue by enrolling in Year 2 of the program in 2017-18 to complete the Business Diploma. “Whichever road you take, you will graduate with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in the field of business,” Brown said. “You can work in administrative

and supervisory roles with a wide variety of organizations, or you can venture out on your own and start the business of your dreams.” Classes for both the Business Certificate and Business Diploma begin Aug. 29, 2016. New funding, deadline for Co-op Community Spaces

Co-op will improve even more places people meet, play, learn and share by giving up to $1.5 million to local organizations, up from $1 million last year. Co-op Community Spaces was launched in 2015 to help protect, beautify and improve spaces in communities across Western Canada. In its inaugural year, the program funded 16 projects in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. “From creek rehabilitation to gardens to play spaces for toddlers, the projects selected for funding last year showcased the innovation and dedication of local community groups” said Bruce Thurston, General

Manager of Yorkton Co-op. “Because I know our communities in the Parkland area have their own unique ideas for spaces that could be built or improved, I would encourage our local community groups to consider applying”. To qualify, organizations must be a registered non-profit, registered charity or community service co-operative. Administered by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) on behalf of the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS), Co-op Community Spaces will provide donations between $25,000 and $100,000 to recipients. Because of the increased funding, the program will support up to 60 com-

munity projects in 2016. Funding is available to projects in three categories • Recreation: Enhancing recreation opportunities such as recreation centres and playgrounds. • Environmental conservation: Preserving natural spaces such as green spaces, parks and interpretive centres. • Urban Agriculture: Supporting small-scale agricultural initiatives in rural and urban spaces such as community gardens and food education facilities. Applications for the 2016 Community Spaces program will be accepted from January 18 to February 12, 2016. For more details about this

year’s program – and to see last year’s recipients at work – see www.communityspaces.ca. About Yorkton Co-operative Association Limited: Yorkton Co-op has been operating for more than 75 years and has grown to a $100 million business employing more than 210 people. Yorkton Co-operative Association Limited operates a food store and a gas bar/ convenience store in Kamsack, a crop input agro centre in Ebenezer, a service centre and cardlock in Theodore, a cardlock in Rhein, a keylock in Dubuc, two gas bars/convenience stores/ car washes, an agro centre and a food store in Yorkton.

College working on year-long plan

The new calendar proclaims the start of 2016, but Parkland College is already setting its sights on the fall. Planning for the 2016-2017 academic year is well underway to ensure that the College continues to serve students next year and beyond. One of the key items for Parkland College in the year ahead is the creation of a new organizational strategic plan. The College’s most recent strategic plan covered 2012-2015 and performed well, but President Dwayne Reeve knows it must adapt to meet the ever-changing needs of the region. “Planning for the future is both an exciting and daunting task,” Reeve said. “While we are never quite sure what the future holds, we are certain that a strong strategic framework will be an invaluable tool to

assist Parkland College as we work to serve our students, staff, and communities.” The College has enlisted the services of Laura Soparlo, a Regina-based consultant, whose work in the education and government sectors is extensive. Soparlo has assisted the College in past strategic planning activities and will facilitate the collection of input through focus groups and online surveys from a variety of groups, including staff, students, and external partners. The goal is to have the new strategic plan finalized and ready for implementation in the 2016-17 year. Simultaneously, the College is beginning its annual recruitment drive for next year’s post-secondary programs. Applications are already being accepted for most of the programs

beginning in the fall of 2016. With the Trades and Technology Centre in Yorkton well into its first full year of operation, and established locations in Yorkton, Melville, Esterhazy, Fort Qu’Appelle, Canora, and Kamsack, there are more seats to fill and more options available to students close to home. Parkland College continues to offer a diverse mix of training options. Students can pursue university degrees, skills

training certificates and diplomas, and adult education upgrading. “Many students are drawn to our unique learning environment and smaller class sizes,” Reeve added. “Students can flourish in a friendly and welcoming setting where their teachers know them by name. And our instructors and counsellors are dedicated to their students and have a passion for life-long learning.” —Submitted

By Cindy Elavsky

Q: Can you tell me what Joan Allen has been up to lately? She is a great actress and one classy lady. — Paul T., via email A: The wonderful and talented Ms. Allen can next be seen in the new ABC series “The Family.” It is a dramatic political thriller that centers on a family (headed by matriarch Claire Warren, played by Joan) that is shaken to the core when the presumed dead son, Adam, suddenly returns. After disappearing a decade earlier, Adam’s homecoming to Red Pines, Maine, is initially met with astonishment and joy, but suspicions soon begin to emerge. Is he really who he says he is? The boy’s shocking reappearance forces the entire family to reexamine who they are, unearthing long-buried secrets, betrayals and heartache. Leading a stellar ensemble cast — Rupert Graves, Andrew McCarthy, Zach Gilford, Madeleine Arthur, Margot Bingham, Alison Pill, Rarmian Newton and Liam James — Oscarnominee Joan Allen brings to life Claire Warren, who not only has survived the heartbreaking loss of her son, but

Joan Allen has used her resiliency and surrounding adversity in the aftermath of this tragedy to fuel her own political aspirations and rise to power. “The Family” debuts with a special premiere on Thursday, March 3, at 9/8c, with a second, allnew episode on Sunday, March 6, at 9/8c, where it will take over its regular day and time slot. Q: I was so happy to read in your column that “Longmire” had a fourth season on Netflix and has been renewed for a fifth. However, I don’t have a computer and have no way to watch new episodes. Will they be out on DVD anytime soon? — Vickie H., Danville, Virginia A: While Netflix has not announced a release date for season four of the cult-hit Western, I would hope that it eventually will be released on DVD. Netflix original series like “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black” found their way to DVD, so I am thinking that “Longmire” will too, especially when

you consider what a following it has. As soon as I hear something, I’ll let everyone know. Q: I heard that old episodes of “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” are going to return to late-night TV, but I can’t find it anywhere. Can you help? — Roberta F., North Rose, New York A: Antenna TV (check local listings to find the station) began showing “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson” starting Jan. 1 at 11 p.m. (local time), with episodes airing every night. So if you’re just not into the Jimmys or Conan, let the King of Late Night take you back to the oldschool late-night talkshow format instead! I also highly recommend PBS’s American Masters’ documentary called “Johnny Carson: King of Late Night,” which documents his rise in late-night television and features revealing interviews from the people who knew him best.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Burnt” (R) — Bradley Cooper stars as a hotshot chef who is equal parts charm and self-destruction — with a seasoning of carefully crafted stubble. Once a sizzling kitchen captain in Paris, American chef Adam Jones (Cooper) made a sputtering grease-fire out of his life with drugs and nastiness. Rehabbed and back on the culinary scene in London, Adam’s got to assemble the right crew — including Sienna Miller as a reluctant romance and Omar Sy as a former rival — then start cooking his way to redemption. Cooper supplies his best bad-boy charm, but that smarm loses its fla-

Mom, Dad give thumbsup in “Meet the Patels” vor after a while, and you’re stuck with a bunch of characters who keep forgiving a raging jerk. The ample shots of food will make you want to feast through your eyes, but the story doesn’t do much to plate it. “A Brilliant Young Mind” (PG-13) — Young Nathan has excelled at math since elementary school, but he suffers from a disability that makes it difficult for him

to connect with people or even manage the barrage of information from the outside world. As a teen, Nathan (Asa Butterfield) represents the United Kingdom at the International Math Olympics, an undertaking that could open up his world or shut him down. Director Morgan Matthews does a great job of putting you inside Nathan’s mind without resorting to flashy camera moves or special effects. Especially strong is Sally Hawkins’ performance as Nathan’s mother, who carried so much of the struggle, supporting Nathan along the way

while keeping her hopes in check. “Meet the Patels” (PG) — Nearly 30 and newly single, actor Ravi Patel agrees to try things the way his Indian parents suggest. Ravi and his sister Geeta co-direct this documentary — partially told in animation — about Ravi’s search for love through somewhat more “traditional” means: His information is spread through a network of relatives and friends, plus there are matchmakers and speed-dating conventions for people who have favorable family lines. It’s overwhelming from the start, as Ravi’s not the most tradition-

ally inclined guy, and he’s even pretty shy for an actor. It’s a fun, lighthearted look at love, tradition and change. “The Assassin” (R) — This stunning martialarts drama set in ancient China has been cutting a swath through various film festivals for the past year. Nie Ninniang (Qi Shu) was betrayed and exiled years ago, and has since become a graceful and effective assassin under the guidance of a scheming nun. After showing some compassion, the young killer is then tasked with executing her former betrothed. The real thrust of this feature is its astounding

visuals, especially long, gorgeous shots that put color and form to work creating a living painting. The political and intimate dramas may not land for everyone, but some of these scenes will leave an impression on any kind of viewer.

Frigid weather may seem like a good excuse to stay inside, avoid workouts and overindulge in comfort foods. However, many health experts have found that these tendencies leave most people feeling less content during the winter months. Researchers say people should establish new traditions to increase happiness and avoid wintertime woes. In other words, now is a great time to change the way you think about winter. Instead of resolving to make drastic new year changes, establish healthy traditions. Incorporate activities and habits that promote health and can be shared with spouses, friends and family members. Here are a few suggestions to re-think your health this winter.

HOLLYWOOD — “Stars Wars: The Force Awakens” is all anyone is talking about, including The Vatican Newspaper, which suggests the blockbuster is “confused and hazy, fails most spectacularly in its representation of evil and overdoes the darkness!” What the Vatican failed to see is ... it’s just a movie! “The Force Awakens” is on par with “Star Wars: A New Hope” in so many ways. Small wonder Harrison Ford received the highest salary of anyone, because he’s magnificent again as Han Solo. In 1977 when George Lucas was casting the first “Star Wars,” he remembered Ford from his 1973 film “American Graffiti” and cast him in the third male lead as Solo. His salary was a mere $10,000. For “The Empire Strikes Back” he was paid $100,000, and then $400,000 for “Return of the Jedi.” Mark Hamill had been a regular on “General Hospital” and a guest on a slew of episodic television when he was cast as Luke Skywalker. Because he was the central character, he earned $650,000. Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia, has never revealed her salary for the blockbuster. Lucas was so happy with his three new stars that he gave them each .025 percent of the profits from the film, which over time translated into more than $3 million. Ford and Hamill also benefited from the merchandising, while Fisher admitted, “I was 19 and gave it up for free.” Sir Alec Guinness, already a big star,

• A good first step is creating a vision for the future by picturing yourself happy and healthy. Identify positive and negative aspects of your health and the health of others, including friends, family members, spouses and children. This provides a starting point for establishing new behaviors, avoiding negative habits and seeking help from others. • Set realistic goals with measurable results, because small changes are easier than big changes and can add up over time. Focus on changing one or two behaviors. Once these are mastered, set new goals. • Establish traditions to accommodate cold weather. Try new things, such as dance classes, indoor pools for swimming or water aerobics, or check out exercise

videos from the library. Invest in home fitness equipment, such as jump ropes, DVDs, treadmills and stationary bikes. Having equipment at home makes it easier to stay physically active. Search for bargains on gently used equipment, and try different things to find what works best. • Think of things that are enjoyable, and incorporate physical activity to enhance them. Plan activity breaks, set a timer and have 5-10 minute relays inside or outside, take a walk around the block during commercials or try games that get everyone moving. • Practice ways to improve your mood each day, even if they seem silly or unnecessary. Try wearing bright colors, reading or watching something funny and laughing out loud -laughing reduces stress hormones and increases endorphins. Socialize and spend time with family, old and new friends and those in need. Creating social ties can boost happiness, improve

self-worth and increase your sense of purpose. One of the easiest ways to socialize is over a great meal. Try this crowd-pleasing recipe for Chili With Winter Vegetables. Make it a potluck and invite family and friends over for dinner and game night. Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t have fun inside! CHILI WITH WINTER VEGETABLES This is a great “makeahead” recipe that’s perfect for impromptu dinner parties. The chili can be refrigerated for up to two days and tastes even better after the flavors meld. •1/2 cup vegetable oil •1 large onion, chopped •4 medium garlic cloves, very finely chopped •2 large red bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch pieces •1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces •1 bunch (about 10

leaves) kale, chopped •1/2 pound carrots, cut into 1/2-inch pieces •2 tablespoons chili powder •2 tablespoons ground cumin •1-1/2 teaspoons salt •2 (14-ounce) cans peeled Italian tomatoes •2 canned chipotles in adobo, plus 1-1/2 tablespoons adobo sauce •3 cups water, vegetable, chicken or beef broth •2 cups canned hominy, drained •2 cups canned red kidney beans, drained •Brown rice, chopped red onions, cilantro, sour cream, tortilla chips or cornbread, for serving In a medium, heavy stockpot or Dutch oven, heat the oil. Add the onion and garlic and cook over high heat, stirring, until slightly softened, about 3 minutes. Add the bell pepper, sweet potatoes, kale and carrots; cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned in spots, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chili powder and cumin and

season with salt. Cook for 1 minute.

In a blender, puree the tomatoes and their juices with the chipotle, adobo sauce and water or broth until very smooth. Add the mixture to the casserole along with the hominy and beans and bring to a boil. Cover partially and simmer the chili over moderate heat until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Season with additional salt, as needed. Serve with rice, red onions, cilantro, sour cream and chips. Makes 8 servings.

Harrison Ford received a salary and 2.025 percent of the profits, which translated, over time into $56 million. James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, didn’t think the film would do well and accepted $12,000 for his voice. After the film hit big, he fired his agents and hired new ones who got him a lot more money. I was friends with Mark Hamill when he was on “General Hospital.” Shortly before the last scenes were shot in 1977, Mark had a car accident and a double was utilized for his final scenes. I provided Mark’s agents with photos that were used for his plastic surgery. In “The Empire Strikes Back,” they explained his new facial look by hiding him under a fur hoody, walking in the snow, until he enters a cave and is mauled by a bear-like creature. At the premiere of “The Force Awakens,” Daniel Logan, who played Boba Fett in “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones,” told me that Daniel Craig pleaded with director J.J. Abrams to let him to be in “The Force Awakens” as anything, so he appears in an uncredited cameo, and here’s the funny part ... he plays Storm Trooper JB-007 (for James Bond007), no doubt both shaken and stirred!

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is an 84-yearold diabetic. He has had a wound on his foot (on the inner side of his right foot, near his big toe) for about five months. He has been treated by a podiatrist, who has debrided the wound every week. He prescribed antibiotics when the wound has looked infected. A visiting nurse and my mother have changed and dressed the wound regularly during these months. This week, the podiatrist said he could see the bone in my dad’s foot, and recommended hyperbaric treatment. Could you tell me what your opinion is of this treatment in my father’s case? Do you know if it has a high percentage of success? — C.O. ANSWER: Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and feared. Diabetes damages blood vessels, both large and small. Also, longstanding diabetes decreases the effectiveness of the inflammatory response and immune system. Finally, poor nerve function in people with diabetes combines with these other factors to predispose one to developing breakdown of the skin and development of ulcers. These ulcers can get large and deep, and when the bone is visible (and sometimes even when it’s not), the bone is infected. In this case, there is a high risk of the need for amputation. By far, the best way to deal with diabetic foot ulcers is to not get them in the first place. Good control of diabetes,

proper footwear, regular checks by a professional and daily self-checks of the feet for people at high risk can reduce the likelihood of developing ulcers. Early and aggressive treatment of precursor lesions, even mild redness of the skin, ingrown toenails or fungal infection of the feet, should prompt urgent evaluation by a podiatrist. Once the ulcer has progressed to the point where your dad’s is now, aggressive measures are called for. In addition to care by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a woundmanagement specialist may be limb- and even life-saving. While hyperbaric oxygen has indeed been shown to be beneficial in several studies (reducing amputation rate from 33 percent to 9 percent in one study), only an expert with detailed knowledge of your dad’s case can decide whether this is appropriate treatment. If you trust your podiatrist, I think it may well be a useful treatment. However, I would be sure that he, or a vascular surgeon, has looked at the quality of blood flow to the foot. DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your position on the shingles vaccine for people in their 70s? We have been told that some doctors do not approve of it. Yet we know of so many people who suffered terribly from shingles. Thank you. — J.T. ANSWER: I’ve written

about the vaccine lots of times. I am a strong believer in it and think anyone over 60 should get it unless they have a medical reason not to. The older you are, the more important it is to get the shot, since the complica-

tion of pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is so devastating and tends to lasts longer the older you are. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column when-

ever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

PORK TENDERLOIN WITH ROASTED GRAPES Sneak in the healthy stuff: Kids will love the sweet flavor of roasted grapes. •1 teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed •2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil •1 whole pork tenderloin (1 pound) •3 cups seedless red and green grapes (about 1 pound) •1/2 cup chicken broth Heat oven to 475 F. In cup, combine fennel with 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt; use to rub all over pork. In 12-inch skillet with oven-safe handle (or with handle wrapped in double-thickness of foil for roasting in oven later), heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add pork and cook 5 minutes, turning to brown all sides. Add grapes and broth to skillet; heat to boiling. Cover and roast in oven 15 to 18 minutes or until meat thermometer inserted in thickest part of pork reaches 150 F. Internal temperature of meat will rise about 5 F upon standing. Transfer pork to warm platter. Heat grape

mixture to boiling over high heat; boil 1 minute or until liquid thickens slightly. Slice pork; serve with grapes and pan juices. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL The tension between Brooke and Bill was palpable as they began working together at Spencer Publications. Rick offered Sasha a position in his company. Nicole filled Maya in on how her friendship with Sasha had always been of a competitive nature. Meanwhile, Sasha had aspirations of obtaining more than just a job at Forrester Creations. Katie assured Rick that Brooke could be trusted around Bill. Because Nicole had selflessly sacrificed so much of herself for him and Maya, Rick made a sacrifice of his own. Nicole’s insecurity got the best of her when she witnessed how much attention Zende was receiving from other females. Sasha’s hopes got dashed. Wait to See: A once-solid marriage comes to an end. DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Caroline described another disturbing vision she had about Victor. Wait to See: Hope confesses to murder.

Arianne Zucker stars as “Nicole” on “Days of Our Lives” Chad proposed to Abigail. Rafe offered to help a traumatized Hope. Victor comforted Maggie over Daniel’s death. Steve was stunned when Ava revealed the story behind the baby pictures. Andre learned the truth about Chad. Theo found a cruel message inside his locker. Melanie returned to Salem to help plan her father’s funeral. Nicole had a difficult time dealing with Daniel’s death. Eric was wracked with guilt over his actions. Eduardo gave John key information about his mother. Andre became suspicious of Hope. Eric and Brady shared an intense confrontation. Later, Brady had an odd dream involving Nicole.

GENERAL HOSPITAL Kiki wondered if Ava was in trouble with the law yet again. Morgan wanted to do something to make his family proud of him. Johnny put his master plan with Valerie into motion. Carlos made a heartfelt appeal to Sabrina. Lulu’s guilt got the best of her as she started to realize that there was no simple solution to repairing her and Dante’s marriage. Anna sought out Robert for help. The success of Crimson’s green issue put the tax-dodging Julian on edge. Alexis nixed the idea of having an engagement party. Johnny’s plans for Valerie put her life in jeopardy. Incriminating photos of Johnny and Lulu turned up at the PCPD. Hayden was torn between acting on her head or her heart. Wait to See: Kristina makes a confession.

The tension was thick between Noah, Luca and Marisa at Newman Enterprises. Michael delivered surprising news to Jack. Lily confronted and slapped Hilary over how she was treating Devon. Meanwhile, Devon told Cane he couldn’t bring himself to walk away from Hilary. Victor warned Noah of the

importance of sticking to their plan and not losing his cool. Cane informed Lily that he wasn’t ready to move forward with their relationship. Victor scolded Nikki after finding out that she was on a lunch date with Neil. Mariah was shocked at how bravely Kevin stood up to Jack and Victor. Wait to See: Kevin smells a con.

Did you know?

January was not always the first month of the year. Earlier calendars, such as the Julian calendar used by the Romans, considered March the first month of the year. These calendars were based largely around weather and harvest schedules, and winter was considered to be a time without definitive months. Eventually, the calendar was expanded at around 713 BCE to include two additional months so it would equal a standard lunar year.

Romans also were integral in giving the months their names, and some months got their names from Roman mythology and the gods of that time, while others were named after prominent Roman emperors. January got its name from a Roman god named Janus, who was considered a god of transitions and beginnings. Janus was depicted as a two-faced god, which is appropriate in the present-day since January represents a time of saying goodbye to the old year and looking ahead to the new year.

• I was painting recently and had a half-can left over when I was done. To preserve the paint, I cut out a circle of wax paper and laid it directly on the surface of the paint, then sealed the can properly. This keeps a layer of scum from forming. Just remember to remove it before you shake or stir the paint when you need to touch up. — C.L. in Rhode Island • Save the plastic lids from coffee cans to use as coasters for your plants. This is especially nice when they are all brought inside, out of the cold. This way they can be watered, and you don’t have to worry about water spilling out on the floor or counter. • Have you finished making your 2016 financial wish list? Saving for a rainy day should be on the list every year. Here’s a great saving tip: Set aside a particular type of currency that fits in your savings budget. It may be $5 bills or quarters. Every time you get one of these in change, stuff it in a jar or otherwise sock away. Don’t count until you get to a specific time period — a month or three months, say. You might surprise yourself with both how much you can save up, and how easy it is to do without. • “Brown your pork or beef before putting it in the slow cooker. It leaves a nice finish on the meat, and flavor too. The extra pan to clean and the couple of minutes it takes are really worth it.” — P.E. in Nebraska • Trying to cut calories? Here’s a flavorful and low-fat solution: saute both meat and vegetables in broth. It will do the job of an oil in keeping the food from burning, but it will do so with no fat and add a rich flavor and dimension to your dinner. Simple ways to get a more restful night’s sleep

A good night’s sleep can benefit the human body in various ways, including increasing alertness and improving mood and productivity. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, chronic insomnia disorders, which are defined as insomnia that occurs at least three times per week for at least three months, affect 10 percent of the adult population, while an additional 15 to 20 percent of adults suffer from a short-term

insomnia disorder (less than three months). Fortunately, insomnia is treatable, and many people who suffer from insomnia can address their conditions without use of medication. The following are a handful of strategies adults can employ to ensure a more restful night’s sleep. • Reduce stimulant consumption. When consumed in large quantities or close to bedtime, stimulants such as caffeine can make it difficult to fall asleep. Beverages

such as coffee and soda contain enough caffeine to interfere with a person’s ability to fall asleep, so keep your caffeine consumption to a minimum, resisting caffeine four to six hours before bedtime. Nicotine, which is the active constituent in tobacco, also can act as a stimulant, giving men and women another reason to quit smoking. If you must have soda, coffee or tea before, during or after dinner, drink only decaffeinated beverages.

• Stop staring at the clock. According to the Sleep Health Foundation, staring at the clock as you are trying to fall asleep increases the stress hormone cortisol in your body, making it more difficult to fall asleep. Turn your alarm clock away from your bed so you cannot see the time. • Read before bed but not in bed. The National Sleep Foundation notes that calming activities such as reading can help

the human body shift into sleep mode. But reading in bed may have an adverse effect on your ability to fall asleep. Read in an armchair in your bedroom or another room, as you feel yourself growing tired, stop reading and get into bed. If possible, read print books, magazines or newspapers before going to sleep, as studies have shown that the blue light from electronics such as tablets and ereaders can disturb sleep.

• Avoid alcohol. Men and women who struggle to fall asleep may find that alcohol helps to bring on sleep. While that’s often true, a few hours after consumption, alcohol begins to act as a stimulant. That can affect both your quality of sleep and your ability to remain sleeping. Avoid consuming alcohol within three hours of your bedtime so you can sleep better and longer and are less likely to suffer from interrupted sleep.

Remember – Most people don’t experience any symptoms in the early stages of kidney disease, so it is important to be screened regularly to detect kidney problems as early as possible. The Kidney Foundation of Canada recommends screening which includes blood pressure, blood creatinine and urinalysis to look for protein. Enjoy family-friendly winter activities

Many people may run indoors when the temperatures outside approach or dip below freezing. But the truly adventurous see no reason why a little cold weather should keep them cooped up indoors for months at a time. Sports and other physical activities can provide the perfect respite from the cabin fever that can settle in during long winters. Families looking to get some quality time outdoors together this winter can enjoy a host of activities in the great outdoors, even if the temperatures are a tad on the chilly side.

• Sledding: Sledding may remind adults of their childhoods and turn kids’ snow days into fun afternoons they will never forget. Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans down snowy hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids downhill or sharing a sled with their youngsters. While older kids can typically handle sleds on their own, parents should ride along with toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. When sledding, keep a close eye for any signs that suggest kids might be getting too cold, such as shiver-

ing or clothes that are soaked through. • Snowshoeing: Parents may not know that many retailers sell snowshoes for children. While snowshoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun way for families that like family walks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. Make sure kids are bundled up, paying extra attention to their footwear. Kids will enjoy snowshoeing more if their boots are both comfortable and capable of keeping their feet warm. • Snowman building:

Perhaps no outdoor winter activity is more conducive to family fun than building a snowman. The season’s first substantial snowfall provides the perfect opportunity for parents and their children to start building some snowmen. While “snowman building” is unlikely to find its way onto any gym schedules, building a snowman provides a great workout. Lifting snow is great strength training, while pushing snow to form Frosty’s body is a great way to get in some cardiovascular exercise. • Skiing and snowboarding: The earlier youngsters start

skiing and/or snowboarding, the more likely such activities will prove second nature.

Many resorts offer skiing and snowboarding lessons to kids and adults, so parents can book weekend getaways for the family to nearby resorts and foster a love of winter sports in youngsters.

While it’s tempting to huddle up indoors when winter hits full swing, families who embrace the great outdoors when the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the way.

Four tips to manage calorie consumption

Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to mean all or nothing when it comes to your favourite foods and drinks. Whether your goal is weight loss, training for a sporting event or just becoming more health conscious, there are simple things you can do

to better manage your calories. Food and beverage choices and physical activity are integral contributors to maintaining an active lifestyle, and it’s important to strike the right balance between what you eat, drink and do. The Canadian

Beverage Association offers some tips on how you can better manage your beverage calorie intake: 1. Consider portion sizes. There are a range of pre-packaged portion sizes on grocery store shelves to help choose servings that are best

Did you know?

Research indicates that people who laugh a lot are much healthier and may live longer than those who don’t find time to chuckle. A good, deep belly laugh can provide your body and mind with a great workout. Dr. Lee Berk at the Loma Linda School of Public Health in California found that laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. The organization Laughter Works, which teaches people how and why to

laugh, says laughter can cause blood pressure to drop, blood to become oxygenated and endorphins to kick in, which can improve mood. And that’s just the beginning. Laughing can help reduce stress and promote stronger relationships between people who laugh together. Data indicates children around the age of six laugh the most, laughing roughly 300 times per day, while adults average only 15 to 100 laughs per day.

Many soft drinks are now available in single servings ranging from 220 ml to 591 ml, or in terms of energy intake, approximately 80 calories to 220 calories in full calories options. When you’re choosing a drink, consider how it fits in to your calorie-per-day target. 2. Making water more exciting with … water! From still water to sparkling water, and with a multitude of flavoured water beverages to choose from, there is a huge variety of zero calorie options for people who want variety, but

fewer calories. When you’re at home and want to jazz up your glass of tap water, try adding a few easy-mixing flavour drops, which you can find at most grocery stores. 3. Look for low-cal. There is now an everincreasing selection of low-, no-, and midcalorie beverage choices. Try a lower calorie version of your favourite soft drink or juice as a possible alternative. 4. Consider your activity level. As much as possible, be aware of how many calories you’re consuming throughout

the day, and balance this with how active you are. All beverages in Canada have the number of calories in each serving right on the front of the label so you can make the choice of a full , mid- or no-calorie beverage that best suits your energy intake each day. The beverage industry has set a goal through their Balance Calories initiative to reduce nonalcoholic beverage calories consumed per person nationally by 20 per cent by 2025. A few exercise tips for the beginner

The right combination of diet and exercise is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. While many people find adapting to a healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years. Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape. Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. In addition to the buddy system, beginners can employ the following strategies to make their return to exercise go as smoothly

as possible. • Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it’s important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen. Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity. • Stretch after working out. Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your

muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position. Include both static stretching and foam rolling in your post-workout stretching routine. • Find a routine that works for you. Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym membership upon resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle. While gyms afford you the opportunity to strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, they’re not for everyone. The best approach and the one that’s likely to be most successful over the long haul is to find an exercise routine that engages you and that you find enjoyable. If the gym is not for you, try to find a routine that still includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Strength training can make your

body more durable, and cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk for various health problems, including heart disease. • Track your progress. One way to stay motivated is to keep track of your progress. If you’re working out but not monitoring your results, you may not feel like you’re

getting anywhere. Keep a workout diary, tracking both your successes and failures, so you can see what’s working and what’s not. The longer you stay committed to your workout routine, the greater the likelihood that you will be tracking more successes than failures, and those successes

can provide the motivation to keep you going on those inevitable days when you want to skip workouts. Returning to exercise after an extended period of inactivity can be quite the challenge, but it’s nothing motivated men and women cannot overcome.

Did you know? Pregnancy food cravings have been the butt of many jokes, and many husbands to pregnant women expect their better halves to request chocolate, French fries or strange combinations such as pickles and ice cream during a pregnancy. Although there’s no definitive answer why pregnancy cravings occur, some feel they must be tied to nutritional needs, serving as the body’s way of telling a

woman that it needs particular nutrients. Authors of a study published in Frontiers in Psychology delved further into the pregnancy cravings conundrum. Coauthor Natalia C. Orloff, a graduate student at SUNY – Albany, determined cravings may be more psychological than nutritional/ physical. She surmises that women crave certain foods because these foods tend to be “forbid-

den or “off-limits in a society so focused on healthy eating. During pregnancy, it may be more socially acceptable to bite into a hot-fudge sundae or enjoy a cheese-topped burger. However, no woman, pregnant or otherwise, should overindulge. Overeating can cause weight gain and potentially negative consequences for mothers and their babies.

This Week Marketplace | January 22, 2016

For whatever reason, there seemed to be a lot of fuss — more than usual, at least — made over one question: Who was the athlete of the year? Most people, I’m guessing, didn’t even know that there are still organizations that actually care enough to sit down and decide such things (in smoke-filled rooms, natch), but apparently there are. And depending on which source you hold

most dear, you heard several different answers: The Associated Press chose Serena Williams; Sports Illustrated chose Stephen Curry; and the BBC made waves across the ocean for not choosing the new heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury. (Fury, who may have the coolest name in boxing history, might have won in the worst fight in history, and he may have possibly given the worst post-fight performance in history ... singing Aerosmith and offending everyone else with his mouth.) Golfer Jordan Spieth tripped off the tongues of more than a few pundits as well.

And then, of course, there were the curiosities. According to Google, the most searched-for term in 2015 was Lamar Odom, but chances are, the teeming masses weren’t interested in the retired basketball player’s lifetime stats. Caitlyn Jenner made it onto a bunch of lists, but I’m not quite sure how that relates to the world of sports other than an interesting asterisk for the record books. And poor Holly Holm. She superkicked the people’s champion to the face to become the undisputed bantamweight champion of the UFC world, and all anybody wants

to talk about is the girl she beat. I have to admit, count me among those who had their heart shattered along with Rhonda Rousey’s face. I was one of those holdouts when it came to mixed martial arts. In the beginning I bought the fight, and all I remember was the sumo wrestler getting his teeth blasted into the front row in the first fight, and then everyone else just rolling around the floor for a few hours. After that, I stubbornly clung to boxing until I realized the “sweet science” wasn’t all that sweet anymore. How thrilling is it to watch Floyd Mayweather

hold his hands up and shake his head “no” and make a few hundred million dollars for the pleasure? Rousey only worked about two rounds in her three fights combined, but she reintroduced the sport to the world. Nobody was talking about boxing like they were talking about MMA this year, and she deserves the lion’s share of the credit. But in the end, it wasn’t a lion that mattered most. Serena didn’t win the Grand Slam, Rousey didn’t beat Holm, and Spieth, as amazing as he was, didn’t win them all either. So who was the athlete of the year? The

A31

horse, of course!

Why does everyone have such a hard time saying it? Was it because they misspelled the horse’s name? American Pharoah — that’s your athlete of the year. It’s not a slam on any athlete to lose to an animal, in this case an incredibly beautiful one from New Jersey that glided to the Triple Crown, drawing crowds that rivaled presidential campaigns and rock concerts. In 2015, that horse, as briefly as he was around, was truly a sight to see.

Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Five ways to use credit cards to your advantage Everyone needs to spend money – whether it’s on groceries, gas, entertainment or travel – and how we manage this spending is just as important as the money we’re putting away. While using a credit card may not be the right choice for everyone, if you manage your expenses and use your credit wisely, there can be numerous benefits. Krystal Yee, former personal finance columnist and blog author, has the following tips on how you can use credit cards to your advantage. 1. Pay it off – The number one rule when using a credit card is to only spend what you can afford. Paying your balance in full and on time will avoid interest charges that can add up and eat away at your bottom line. 2. Choose rewards wisely – Most credit cards offer rewards for the money you spend, and this can lead to more money in your pocket. Consider your lifestyle and spending habits to determine which card will work best for you. Cards like Tangerine’s Money-Back Credit Card give 2% cash-back on purchases in two categories of your choice (for instance gas and groceries), and 1% cash-back on all other purchases. This card also has no annual fee. 3. Save while you spend – One of the best ways to use your credit card rewards is to put the points or cash-back towards your balance and not spend it on more stuff. Tangerine’s card allows you to apply your rewards towards your credit card balance or have them redeemed into a savings account. This can be a great way to ensure rewards are working in your favour. 4. Follow your trail – Some credit cards allow you the ability to log into your account and see exactly where you

have spent your money. Checking in often will allow you to stay on budget and ensure you’re spending money in the

right places. 5. Control your card – Setting your credit card limit to a range you are comfortable with (and

know you can pay back) is a great way to control your spending. Another way to control your card is to simply leave it at

home and take cash if you’re going somewhere where you could be tempted to overspend, like a shopping mall or

a bar. More information on how to use credit wisely is available at forwardthinking.tangerine.ca.
