A Special Year At A Special Club The 2012 season will best be remembered for the events of Sunday 16th September which culminated in Daniel Woods lifting aloft the Kingfisher Beer Cup as York became the ECB National Club Champions. In truth the Final itself was a somewhat one-sided affair Wanstead and Snaresbrook proving no match for York with Tom Pringle and Oliver Hairs the main architects of a comprehensive victory. The ease with which the final was won should in no way detract from the efforts that saw them earn their place there. The run of success in the Cup owed most to the work of the bowling unit which, with the exception of the Final, restricted the opposition to less than 150 runs in every round. Woods finished as the competitions leading wicket taker with 20, and Pringle finished just four behind, and whilst almost two-thirds of all the runs the side scored came from the top order trio of Duncan Snell, Liam McKendry and Oliver Hairs every player involved in the success can point to a personal performance which had a positive effect on the outcome of a specific tie. Given the magnitude of that achievement it could easily be forgotten that it was only one part of a remarkable double as the League title was won for an unprecedented sixth consecutive season, despite trailing long-time leaders Harrogate by nineteen points at the halfway stage. The wet weather which would dominate the first half of season saw the first round of league matches postponed and York without a game the following week either. Woods’ reign eventually began in dramatic fashion with defeat by a single run to Driffield Town.

A run of five victories which included last season’s “bogey” team Yorkshire Academy, was ended at Rotherham Town where the side succumbed to an eight wicket defeat. The wet weather returned to claim three of the next four fixtures without a ball been bowled, and that marked the season’s mid-point. The second half of the league campaign saw York in irresistible form a winning run of thirteen games saw them beat all of the other sides in the competition. Eleven of those matches resulted in maximum points and five had a winning margin of more than 100 runs, among them victory over Harrogate in the penultimate fixture which sealed the Title. Duncan Snell was again outstanding at the top of the order the left- hander scoring four centuries, including back-to-back efforts away at Driffield and Scarbororough in the same weekend, finishing the season with 1078 runs. His opening partner Liam McKendry was another century maker finishing just short of 700 runs, the pair also shared three century opening partnerships. Oliver Hairs finished with over 650 runs, almost all made at a scoring rate which bullied the opposition attack. Alex Collins was the fourth batsmen to score over 500 runs in what was a difficult season for batsmen. Nick Kay was unlucky to miss out on a century against Castleford but the value of his innings was worth more than 98 given the circumstances in which it was made. Simon Lambert was the beneficiary when Andrew Tute chose to leave the club, but in a batting line up dominated by the top four had few chances to make his mark.

One of the highlights of the season was the emergence of Ryan McKendry who’s return of 31 wickets and almost 400 runs underlined his credentials as a genuine all round cricketer. Steven Crossley made a good start to his career behind the stumps and in limited opportunities made valuable lower order runs. Daniel Woods finished as the League leading wicket-taker with 62, and had it not been for a shoulder injury keeping him from bowling Tom Pringle would surely have finished with more than 42. Glen Richmond would have finished as the leading seam bowler, in his debut season, had Jake Murphy not returned late on and picked up six wickets against Cleethorpes. There were also debuts for young bowlers Charlie Elliot who marked his first appearance with a wicket with his opening delivery, and Joshua Barrett. Elsewhere opening round defeats in the Black Sheep Champions Trophy to Woodlands, and to Rotherham Town, albeit by a single run, in the Yorkshire League Cup was coupled along with failure to progress in defence of their Yorkshire League T20 crown`, beyond the group stage despite Oliver Hairs 150 not out against Harrogate, were all viewed with disappointment. But each one of those defeats was followed by victory as Daniel Woods and his team demonstrated they are a special group of cricketers at a special club.
