Teaching in India
Danny Green, D.M.A. Dean of Enrollment Management
Last August, Michael Zerbe, Ph.D., Writing Program Administrator and Associate Professor of English, traveled to Arcadia University's branch campus in Mumbai, India, to teach two English courses. Although the class sizes were small, Zerbe's impact was immense. Deviating from what he described as, "India’s tradition of rote memorization," Zerbe encouraged opinion expression and argument construction, creating an experience that he said was "liberating" for his students. When he wasn't teaching, Zerbe, an avid traveler, ventured to popular sites like the Taj Mahal and the Himalayas. –JH

Class Project Becomes a Book
John Weaver, DPA, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Intelligence Analysis Program in the Department of History and Political Science, formed a collaboration between his intelligence analysis class and the world regional geography class of Jennifer Pomeroy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Geography in the Department of History and Political Science. Their students worked on a joint project to assess President Obama's 2015 National Security Strategy and focused on eight country or regional issues as well as ISIL and Al Qaeda, two non-state actors. Pomeroy pointed out that geography knowledge and spatial skills are important for intelligence analysts. The 10 projects became 10 chapters in a book edited by Weaver and Pomeroy, titled Intelligence Analysis: Unclassified Area and Point Estimates, from Nova Science Publishers. Kate Beauchat, Associate Professor of Education, published a professional development book with Stenhouse Publishers titled Starting Strong: Evidence-Based Early Literacy Practices that shows teachers how to use four proven instructional approaches to improve their teaching practice in all areas of early literacy. Adjunct Professor of Psychology Lisa Lawmaster Hess has published a novel titled Casting the First Stone. Behavioral Sciences Adjunct Professor Patricia Collamer is the author of a newly published children’s book called Grammy’s Eyes for ages 4-7. It is a story about the love between grandparent and grandchild that no illness or separation can change.
