Spring has finally arrived and with it come the tornados and thunderstorms so typical of this time of year. For me, though, these harbingers of Spring are also a great reminder of the importance of staying calm during life’s many storms. We live in an intense, busy, exciting world. Change is constant. Our relationships evolve. Our children grow and mature. Loved ones die. Our careers expand or sometimes come to an end. As a catalyst for change, yoga teaches us to be calm during the storms of change. Everything seems to come up when we begin a yoga practice. Everything we have been suppressing - for years. This is a good thing. Although it can be scary at times, the payoff—remaining a calm, joyful human being even through life’s greatest upheavals--is worth it. A lot of people—me included—begin yoga as a way to change our bodies. But we soon discovers yoga’s greatest secret: as your practice expands, so does your ability to accept, and deal with, change. Or, as one of my yoga teachers says, ‘We come for our vanity and we stay for our sanity’. One yoga class a week helps me regain my calm. Three yoga classes a week prevents me from getting pulled into the drama of any storms that may be brewing. Treating myself to a massage or a facial once a month also brings me back to center. Often, I am amazed and realized how stressed I have been when I get a massage or get back to yoga after skipping a week. This body and emotional awareness is a gift of my yoga practice, signaling me that I need to once again, take better care of myself. We can always begin again. We can always start over. Each day is a new beginning. Spring is a beautiful reminder of new beginnings and new opportunities. Watch it all around find calm during the storms.
