5 Simple & Powerful Benefits of Yoga The new year offers a chance to start fresh and yoga is a way to create positive change. The science of yoga is around 3500 years old. It can be the body’s catalyst for change. The word yoga is a Sanskrit word that means to yoke or bind or to create union. It is a practice that unifies soul, mind, breath and body together as a whole. When we are in alignment we step into the universal flow and into the present moment. There is a multitude of documented research outlining the benefits of a yoga practice. Here are just a few to get you started in the right direction in the new year: 1. Intention: Set a goal for the time on your mat and for your day. This focused thought is the first step in making your goals become reality. 2. Participate: The practice of yoga with others in a studio setting triggers the mind that you are in an atmosphere where the body and mind can now relax and settle. This special time for yourself will enhance your day and you will be more productive. 3. Poses: Learn proper yoga poses to improve your flexibility, strength and balance. A simple pose such as legs up the wall can nourish your immune system. You will become aware of your improved progress over time, building not only physical strength but also improved self esteem and emotional balance.

4. Breath (Pranayama): Learn the importance of breath work and how it affects your overall well being. Focus on diaphragmatic breathing by lying on your back, placing your hand on belly and upper chest, taking a deep breath into your belly and concentrating on the rise and fall of your hand. This connection to your breath will bring more awareness to your body and breath and you will become more present in life. 5. Meditation: Learn how meditation, along with the use of a mantra, will teach you to bat-away and release the bombardment of thoughts that keeps your mind racing and derails your meditation. The use of a mantra such as “OM” or “SoHum” will help you focus. Wildwood Yoga offers the opportunity to build a neighborhood community where yoga is not only about poses and a practice, but also a place where you will learn techniques that will provide you with tools to make changes to support a new and improved lifestyle.
