“
One of the biggest challenges the world faces today is the need to accelerate the pace of sustainability efforts, which is likely to be the biggest challenge of our generation and requires government, private sector, academia and full engagement of the population to work all together, to move faster and find solutions. Forums like the Council of the Americas CEO Roundtable are extremely important as they allow key players in the Latin American market to not only share perspectives, experiences, and engage directly with such an important topic, but also play a crucial role in helping the region outline strategies and solutions that will take us into the future.

BRAVO Leadership Conversations: Tech Titans

2021 BRAVO Business Awards Visionary CEO of the Year Manny Medina, CEO & Founder at Medina Capital & Francis X. Suarez, Mayor of the City of Miami: dynamic dialogue about what is driving Miami’s growing tech ecosystem.
In December 2020, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez sent a simple tweet: “How can I help?” in response to someone who suggested moving Silicon Valley to the Florida metropolis. The response was swift—and action followed suit. “The metrics are off the charts,” said Suarez, citing the top tech job growth in the country by percentage, top tech job migration, $1.2 trillion of AUM moved in the previous 16 months, and $1 billion in venture deals in the last eight weeks. “People underestimate what a welcoming climate and atmosphere create,” said Suarez.

“It’s actually the 1990s on steroids,” said Medina. “It’s phenomenal what you can do for the community with a tech ecosystem,” he added, highlighting how the jobs pay more, the industry consumes fewer resources—“It’s not about pouring concrete”—and you’re creating an environment where education, government, and industry thrive, and the community overall lifts. Medina also underscored how Miami isn’t just a tech hub for the United States, but for all of Latin America. “There’s a huge talent and hunger for entrepreneurship in Latin America,” he said.
“
“What we need to do is make sure that the institutions pay more attention to how important this next generation of entrepreneurship is and that invention should be generated from Latin America.”

Cristina Palmaka, president of SAP Latin America & Caribbean, and Blanca Treviño, CEO of Softtek, who discussed technology’s role in business.
“ “
“We are not going back to the way it was,” said Treviño about clients adopting digital processes during the pandemic. “COVID-19 created an awareness of how important the role technology plays to move forward.”
“Everybody talks about data, but we need to know how to orchestrate it,” said Palmaka. “It is most important to frame what you want to solve then embed the technology behind it,” she said on digital solutions for working remotely.

Some people think that refugee crises are problems for governments and NGOs to solve. But I believe that there is so much that we, as business leaders, can do to help. My hope is that we can work together and inspire even more businesses to step up to this challenge of our time.

Since founding Terremark in 1980 and taking Terremark, Cyxtera, and Appgate to unicorn status, Medina has been spearheading the development of this robust ecosystem not only by successfully leading these companies and Medina Capital, but also by founding eMerge Americas, a yearround platform that’s transforming Miami into the tech hub of the Americas.
“
In the last year and half, we went through so many changes and difficult moments. With so many problems at hand, I decided to focus on people: our employees and their families, my colleagues, our clients, and the society, making them the priority… Listening to their problems, understanding their expectations and needs and connecting with different life situations made a difference for me and for our organization.

“ What this time has really reinforced is my belief in how true leadership, passion and resiliency are the drivers of success, even in the most challenging of times. As I engage with so many leaders across our region, time and again it is evident how these qualities have allowed exemplary leaders to overcome the most difficult of times and keep their businesses afloat while also serving the communities where they operate.
