Community Benefit At the Y, we make a difference by focusing on three key areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors – working to strengthen communities. In 2014, through Annual Giving Campaign support and grants, our Y provided $4.8 million in charitable assistance, scholarships, and subsidized and free programs.

Volunteers are the heart of the Y. During 2014, 3,291 volunteers provided 42,689 hours of service as board members, Annual Giving Campaign storytellers, coaches, and program volunteers.

ACHIEVING MORE, TOGETHER When we look back on the accomplishments of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina in 2014, none of it could have happened without collaboration. It was the collective energy of members, volunteers, staff, and community organizations working together that made so much more possible. We saw dozens of volunteers come together to build the KaBOOM! playground at the Wilkes Family YMCA, the fifth KaBOOM! playground for our Association. Children and adults began using new playing fields and enjoying an outdoor walking track at the Fulton Family YMCA thanks to a generous donation of five and a quarter acres of land from HanesBrands. YMCA Camp Hanes began a new partnership with Camp Corral, which provides a free week of camp to children of military families with priority given to children of the wounded, disabled or fallen. This is one of several weeks at Camp Hanes dedicated to serving special groups including Camp Carolina Trails, in partnership with the American Diabetes Association, and Muscular Dystrophy Camp, among others. We also saw record numbers in overall attendance at resident camp in 2014. Along with swimming and camp games, we saw an opportunity to further our work in fighting the academic achievement gap by incorporating reading into all summer day camps last year, with a special focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math materials. In addition, YMCA Summer Learning Academies were held at five schools and provided 242 academically at-risk children with a comprehensive tutoring curriculum. People suffering from serious health problems often need help to take control of their overall wellness. That’s where the Y steps in. We continued our work in chronic disease prevention and support through programs such as the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, and launched the Pedaling for Parkinson’s cycle class. Our Association expanded with the opening of the Innovation Quarter YMCA, bringing a much-needed presence of health, wellness, and physical activity to a revitalized area of downtown Winston-Salem. We invested in renovation and expansion of the wellness center at the Yadkin Family YMCA and broke ground on a major wellness center expansion at the Wilkes Family YMCA. We made a difference in so many lives this year because of those who support us. We saw a significant 7% increase in Annual Giving Campaign donors in 2014. The accomplishments of this past year will have a lasting impact in strengthening our community. We are grateful for your support.

IN SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY,

Linda S. Wood, Chief Volunteer Officer

Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO

for youth development:

Closing the achievement gap together “You can see it in a child’s face when they start to really understand something for the first time. Learning is like a snowball, once it gets going you can’t stop it,” says Patty DeWitt, pictured right, a first grade teacher at Kernersville Elementary School and tutoring instructor at the school’s YMCA Summer Learning Academy. Studies show that students, on average, lose one month of learning over the summer. For lower-income students, the loss is even greater. YMCA Summer Learning Academies (SLA), held at five sites in 2014, are working to fight that summer learning loss. The Y’s SLA program served 242 academically at-risk students at all sites in 2014. The SLAs incorporate math, reading and tutoring by certified teachers, health and wellness information, computer labs, and enrichment components such as science, character development, the arts and humanities, educational field trips, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities. As part of the program, parents attended weekly meetings offered in English or Spanish, which covered information such as the education system in North Carolina, tips for communicating with teachers, and parenting skills. “We work very hard to identify the students who most need this program,” says Tammie Webster, who teaches academically gifted students at Kernersville Elementary and was the site supervisor for the Y’s 2014 SLA at the school. “In addition to academics, students benefit from learning positive work habits and the interaction with their peers. They are more confident when they start the next school year.” “From a principal’s perspective, the Y’s Summer Learning Academy gives that extra help for students who may otherwise experience the ‘summer slide.’ It’s a great resource to have,” says Becky Carter, principal at Kernersville Elementary. “We know children from economically disadvantaged homes come to our school. When they enter school behind grade level, they need this type of program in addition to the school year to provide a significant intervention. These children have the capability and ability to achieve with the proper resources.”

Grants from Philip Morris International and Lawrence E. Pope Foundation fund the Kernersville site. Funding from the United Way of Forsyth County, Hispanic League, a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, and donations to the YMCA Annual Giving Campaign make the sites at Diggs-Latham, Old Town, Petree, and Cook Elementary Schools possible.

for healthy living:

Healthier as a Family Richard “Ricky” Yontz, Jr., joined the Jerry Long Family YMCA in 2014 to get healthier and set a better example for his young children. As a single father of three, his oldest son with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Ricky’s focus has not always been on his own health. “I wanted to lose weight to be an example for the kids,” he says. When he first joined the Y, he started in the Wellness Center using cardio and weight machines, but wanted to have more interaction. He was able to join a group that played basketball three mornings a week and says, “I disguised exercising with something I really enjoy.” In addition to playing basketball, he incorporated deep water exercise classes and has been consistently making healthier choices, most notably removing all soft drinks from his diet. Today, he has lost nearly 100 pounds and is committed to continuing his health journey. He also benefits from the friendship and support he finds at the Y. “As a single father, some days I feel like I only talk to children and having this time to be able to talk to adults is really important,” says Ricky. “The Y staff are very supportive. They notice my weight loss and that pushes me harder to continue.” The whole family spends time at the Y on the weekends and Ricky appreciates the time spent together in a healthy way. His daughter Nicole, 11, says, “I like to spend time together and exercise. I’m proud of my dad.” His son, Jeffrey, 7, says “I like playing games, swimming, basketball, racquetball – I get to play a lot of sports.” “You can’t do this by yourself,” Ricky says. “I wouldn’t be able to accomplish what I have so far without my kids, the guys playing basketball, the people swimming, and the staff. If it wasn’t for the Annual Giving Campaign I wouldn’t be able to afford to come and I appreciate that a lot.”

for social responsibility:

Growing more together

In early February 2014, the plan was approved to begin construction of the Robinhood Road Family YMCA Community Garden with the help and support of YMCA volunteers, members, and local community business partners. More than 300 volunteer hours were dedicated to developing and sustaining the garden in its first year. Two of those volunteers are Robinhood Y members Mike and Carol Petree. They said, “We volunteer in many areas at the Robinhood Y because it is our way to give back to the Y and the community. Every minute we worked at the Community Garden was a blessing. The garden’s first season was a huge success.” Today, the garden supports 15 4’ x 4’ raised beds that Y members use to grow a wide variety of flowers and vegetables including: several varieties of tomatoes, squash, okra, basil, melons, peppers and cucumbers, as well as many varieties of annual flowers. The Y maintains several beds and donates all food grown in those areas to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. Approximately 400 pounds of food were donated last year. At the 2014 YMCA Youth and Government Conference in Raleigh, two teams from Calvary Baptist Day School and one team from Forsyth Country Day School presented bills on making healthy food more available for those who cannot afford it. The three teams received a $3,000 grant based on their political activism toward hunger in Winston-Salem. As part of their advocacy efforts, they donated money to the Y’s Community Garden and held an advocacy event at the Y to raise awareness about food sustainability in the community. Several local community leaders and politicians were invited to attend, including Senator Burr’s representative Mike Finley, pictured below. Community gardens, like the one at the Y, provide access to nutritionally rich foods that may otherwise be unavailable to low income families and individuals. The garden also provides opportunities to educate youth, teens, and adults about growing their own food and making healthier choices. Last year, two pre-school groups visited to see how food grows, as well as the importance of certain bugs and bees.

red triangle society inductee:

Jim Smoak

“The Y is a big deal in Wilkes County,” says Jim Smoak. Growing up, the Y was located next to the local high school and where many went after school to swim and participate in athletic activity. “It was the place to go. It was a comfortable place where you knew you were safe. That’s a meaningful thing.” After high school, Jim attended Davidson College, graduating in 1970 and then served in the U.S. Army before returning to his hometown of Wilkesboro. He married his wife Luci in 1975, began his banking career that spanned 38 years, and focused on raising their two children, Ben and Katie. Since those early years growing up in Wilkes County, Jim has seen the Y evolve as it also remained a cornerstone of the community. “In a community the size of Wilkesboro, the Y is integral. It’s the center of activities,” he says. In January 2001, the Wilkes Y became a branch of the YMCA of Greater Winston-Salem (now the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina) following months of discussion. Jim sees this period as one of his most significant contributions to the organization. “We were at risk of losing our Y if we had remained independent. It was clear the only way to thrive was if we joined a larger organization. It would have been a tragedy if the Y had closed.” At the time of the merger, the Wilkes Y was housed in an aging facility. Jim, along with Larry Stone and “B” Townes, led a capital campaign to raise the $4 million needed for a new facility. “The community really rallied behind it. They saw that the Y needed to be sustained. And today, we are expanding.” Jim is the current chair of the Wilkes Family YMCA’s capital campaign. He has served and taken on leadership roles on both the local Y’s Board of Management and the Association Board of Directors. He was also instrumental in the process of acquiring the local hospital’s fitness facility to create the Wilkes Express YMCA. He continues to be an active storyteller for the Annual Giving Campaign. Donna Rodgers, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, has worked closely with Jim in his role serving on the Association Finance Committee since February 2008 and many ad hoc sub-committees to address complicated issues crucial to the financial health of the Y. He is the incoming Association Board Treasurer and Chair of the Association Finance Committee. She says, “For many years, Jim has provided invaluable insight and counsel to the YMCA, both on an Association level and at the branch level in Wilkes. He loves the mission of the Y and is committed to making sure we are financially healthy to continue delivering that mission for many years to come. Jim is one of my most trusted advisors.” The Red Triangle Society was established in 2002 and induction into the Society is the highest honor a Y volunteer can receive. Recipients demonstrate long-term and significant commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to the YMCA mission. The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is pleased to induct Jim Smoak into the Red Triangle Society. “Jim has been one of the rocks at the Wilkes Y through good times and bad,” says YMCA of Northwest North Carolina President and CEO Curt Hazelbaker. “He always has the best interest of the Y in mind.”
