YOUR BIBLE STUDY MATTERS.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP.

Digging into the Word is the most foundational way to learn about the concepts of our faith and be transformed, but finding the right Bible study can be a serious challenge. You want to put material and lessons in front of your students that will leave them wanting more and coming back to the Word daily.

YOUR BIBLE STUDY MATTERS. WE’RE HERE TO HELP. Select the 6-Year, 3-Year, or Single-Year plan based on your ministry’s needs and your overall strategy for your weekly Sunday School and Bible Study.

I can say this with all sincerity and with full confidence: We have an outstanding team of folks here at YM360. We’re not perfect, either as individuals or collectively. There is always room to improve, but God has brought together a group of people who are both committed to serving the Lord and committed to each other. We put a high value on serving together. The concept of “team” is really important both at our YM360 offices and on the road with GENERATE camp. Doing ministry is difficult. When a ministry team is dysfunctional, it only adds to the difficulty. But when a team is dialed in and hitting all the right notes, it’s a fun ride.

A NOTE FROM ANDY

As you might have guessed, this edition of the YM360 Magazine is about teamwork. Inside these pages, you’ll find articles that address many aspects of your youth ministry team: parents, volunteers, and student leaders, to name a few. Our prayer is that we can challenge you to spend some time evaluating your youth ministry team and what you can do to turn your team into a powerful asset God can use to lead others closer to Him. We also want to make sure you know what exciting new things are going in in the YM360 world. There are a lot of great things happening with GENERATE, Bible study and discipleship, and our Event Resources. As always, our team is here to partner with your team any way we can. Let us know how we can help. God bless, Andy Blanks Co-Founder/Publisher, YM360

TEENS IMPROVES

SLEEP IN ONE WEEK.

Several studies have shown that the light emitting from screens of smartphones, tablets, and laptops can affect health and sleep patterns. Blue light, in particular, has been linked to sleep deprivation. As research into blue light and its effects continues, new findings presented at the European Society of Endocrinology have shown that the negative effects that screens have on the sleep of teenagers can be alleviated after even just one week of reduced exposure. “Adolescents increasingly spend more time on devices with screens and sleep complaints are frequent in this age group. Here we show very simply that these sleep complaints can be easily reversed by minimizing evening screen use or exposure to blue light,” says co-author Dirk Jan Stenvers. TEENAGERS’ ABILITY TO DESCRIBE

negative emotions

PROTECTS AGAINST DEPRESSION A new study shows that teenagers who can describe their negative emotions in precise and nuanced ways are better protected against depression than their peers who can’t. That’s the conclusion of a new study about “negative emotion differentiation,” or the ability to make distinctions between negative emotions and how to describe them. “Adolescents who use more granular terms such as ‘I feel annoyed,’ or ‘I feel frustrated,’ or ‘I feel ashamed’—instead of merely saying ‘I feel bad’—are better protected against developing increased depressive symptoms after experiencing a stressful life event,” explains the study’s lead author Lisa Starr. ANXIETY IN YOUNG PEOPLE.

A recent study found that reality TV can have a profound negative impact on young teenagers who feel anxious about their bodies. Almost one in four people (24%) aged 18-24 say reality TV makes them worry about their body image, according to a recent poll. More than one in seven (15%) teenagers said they had self-harmed or deliberately hurt themselves because of concerns about their body image, and 23% had experienced suicidal thoughts because of concerns about their body image. As society relaxes its rules around marijuana, U.S. teens seem to be responding by using the drug in much more significant numbers than a generation ago, new research shows. The study looked at 1991-2017 U.S. federal health data on more than 200,000 high school students. It found that the number who said they’d used pot at least once over the past month rose 10-fold -- from 0.6% in 1991 to 6.3% by 2017. Many are becoming “dual users” of both marijuana and alcohol: The number of teens who admit to using both substances at least once a month has almost doubled -- from 3.6% in 1991 to 7.6% in 2017. THE YOUNG MEN IN YOUR MINISTRY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO BE A MAN FROM THE WORD OF GOD.

TO TAKE CARE OF

YOUR TEAM

HOW TO BE A MAN: LEARNING FROM THE REAL MEN OF THE BIBLE [Student Edition]

I love my youth ministry team. They are committed and loyal. They have helped me build our youth ministry and challenged me as a youth minister. It’s amazing all that they have done for the church and the students in our community. IT’S EQUALLY AMAZING HOW I CAN TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED. One of the most critical groups of people you serve--arguably the most important—is your team, the folks who help you get it done on a week-by-week basis. If you don’t set them up for success, you’ll watch as a steady flow of people passes in and out of your ministry. And, as many of us have learned first-hand, youth ministry is never as fun on our own as it is with a team that is passionate and equipped. So, how do we keep our team happy and healthy? Here are a few simple things you can try:

THANK THEM.

Take a few minutes to write out a card thanking your team for a specific moment where you saw God use them. Take them out to lunch or give them a shout out in front of the students. Thanking your team is a simple way of showing them appreciation.

ASK THEM ABOUT THEIR DAY.

Our team is so invested in our ministries. But how invested are

we in their lives? Get to know your team members’ hobbies, families, likes, and dislikes. The more you get to know them, the more you can ask about their day. When they see the investment you are making in them, they will raise the level of theirs.

CHALLENGE THEIR JOURNEY.

A healthy team is a capable team. You need to hold your team accountable in their spirituality, or else it might affect the entire ministry. Challenging them in their journey will lead to difficult conversations; however, it will lead to men and women who trust you and God.

PRAY WITH AND FOR THEM.

It’s one thing to ask about their day, it’s an entirely different thing to pray with them. You and I know how isolating ministry can feel; therefore, we should make sure our team never feels the same. Praying with them reminds them they are not alone in ministry or their personal lives.

is a 40-day devotional experience that uses the lives of 8 men of the Bible as an example and challenges teenagers to live a life of impact and influence, changing the world around them for the sake of the Gospel.

Guys today have a role model problem. In the world around them, there is a lack of men who truly embody what it means to live as a man of God. Where can young men look for an example of what it means to boldly pursue their faith? ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL PLACES TO LOOK FOR EXAMPLES OF GODLY MEN IS GOD’S WORD. In the men of the Bible, we see an example of what it looks like to follow God. We see men forced to wrestle with their faith and how to live their lives in a world that often seems like it’s set against them. If you’re a teenage guy, this is something you can relate to, attempting to live out your faith in a world that doesn’t see things God’s way. The Bible is the true Word of God. The people we meet in its pages are real people. And we can learn much from them, men like:

FEATURE

FEATURE Shouldn’t there be a set of characteristics that both describes Christian teams and sets the standards to aspire to? If we’re concerned with doing ministry that honors God and each other, I think the answer is “yes.” I want to share seven characteristics that Christian teams should embody in hopes that they will help you think about the way your team goes about doing ministry together.

7 THE

TRAIT 1: EMBRACING THE MISSION

Christian teams should be motivated primarily by the mission. What’s the mission? You and your team are tasked with leading students closer to God so that their lives are transformed as a result. This mission must be what compels your team.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A CHRISTIAN TEAM

Remember, other things can motivate youth workers if we’re not careful. We can be motivated solely by attendance numbers. We can be motivated by pride or recognition. We can be motivated by envy, greed, or any number of things. But as a Christian team, the big-picture mission God has tasked us with should drive our efforts forward.

TRAIT 2: PURSUING GOD PERSONALLY

It’s vital that as your team serves the Lord together, that they seek the Lord individually. If the individuals on your team aren’t committed to growing in their faith through daily seeking God through Bible study and prayer, you open your team up for burnout, mission-drift, apathy, and more. On the other hand, a team where individual spiritual growth is happening is a team that is much more likely to stay on mission, to serve selflessly, to celebrate wins, and to dig in and work through any setbacks.

TRAIT 3: CO-SERVING SELFLESSLY

As a Christian team, you and your team members are all serving God in some form. But together, you co-serve, working on getting the job done. The last thing you want in a team member is someone who has a “not my job” mentality. When Christian teams are serving effectively, it’s “I’ll pitch in where I am needed.”

BY ANDY BLANKS

I think of Galatians 6:2, where Paul encourages us to “bear one another’s burdens.” Or Philippians 2:4-5 where Paul says that we are to model Christ’s selflessness by looking out for the interests of others before our own. Over and over again in Scripture, we are encouraged to model the virtue of selfless sacrifice. If we apply this pattern to our team and the work we do together, it’s amazing the impact we can have.

TRAIT 4: PRACTICING RADICAL GRACE You’ve no doubt been on a variety of teams in your life. Sports teams. Running clubs. Volunteer groups. Each of these teams has specific traits that make them unique. But have you ever stopped to wonder what a Christian team should look like?

When I say a Christian team, I’m envisioning a group of people brought together to do ministry of some sort. It could be a team working at a non-profit, a parachurch organization, or your youth ministry team at your church.

.COM OR CALL 866.323.6673

A team is like a family. There will be moments where you’re all on the same page and moments where, well . . . not so much. Conflicts will inevitably arise on your team as they do in your family. But if you practice grace – real, radical, honest-to-good-

5

ness grace – you will find that your team will not only weather the conflict, but you’ll be stronger on the other side. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” That’s a pretty good word for how we handle conflict on our teams.

TRAIT 5: HONORING GOD WITH HARD WORK

If you read the Bible with an eye toward what it has to say about hard work, you may be surprised how often laziness is condemned. There is an expectation in Scripture that God’s people work faithfully and honorably. Having a team member who doesn’t pull their load will create hostility and bitterness among team members. On the other hand, few things build culture more than being able to turn around and see the results of your hard work. Christian teams that work hard honor God. It’s that simple.

TRAIT 6: SEEKING GOD TOGETHER IN PRAYER

In Colossians 4:2, Paul encourages us to “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.” The picture of your team committed to an environment of consistent prayer is a powerful one. But the side effect of continuous prayer is an attitude of watchfulness. When a team serves with expectancy, looking to see how God will move, that’s a team that is right where God wants them to be. As a leader, ask yourself, “what is my team’s posture toward consistent prayer? And do we EXPECT God to move?”

TRAIT 7: FOLLOWING GOD’S LEADING IN FAITH

David says in Psalm 37, “The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way.” If you believe God is sovereign, you have to believe that He has a path in store for your ministry. When a Christian team is seeking God personally and corporately in prayer, when they have stacked hands around the mission, and when they have each other’s backs, they are in a position of being ready to move as God leads. This is a fantastic place to be.

While our teams may look different, these characteristics are present in teams that are poised to be used by God in powerful ways. Use these characteristics as a way to evaluate your team and your mission. Watch and see how God will knit you together, uniting your team in pursuit of the mission He’s called you to.

FOR

GETTING PARENTS

ON YOUR TEAM (IF YOU AREN’T A PARENT YOURSELF)

We know that we can’t effectively minister to teenagers and not seek to be on the same team with their parents. But what do you do if you don’t have any kids of your own? It can be hard building a bridge to parents when you don’t have children yourself. It’s true. And it’s not always a fun truth because there can be some real pain-points wrapped up in it. Some of us WANT to have children and don’t (or haven’t yet). Some of us aren’t necessarily ready to start a family, but we’ve seen our youth ministry influence marginalized because of this. But I also want to encourage you. Just because you don’t have children of your own doesn’t mean that you can’t be an invaluable resource to parents in your youth ministry. I think the most effective youth workers come alongside parents and say, “I am not here to tell you how to parent your child. But I am here to help you disciple your child.” One of the most valuable roles you can play as a youth worker is helping support parents in the discipleship work they are already doing. Here are three thoughts on how to do this:

INFORM

One of the most powerful ways you can partner with parents is to see yourself as a source of information to them. What if you saw yourself as an aggregate of content for your parents? What if part of your job was that every week or so you spent 20 or 30 minutes

searching for interesting articles on youth culture, discipleship, parenting, and so on, and then sent a list of those links to parents?

ENCOURAGE

You don’t have to have children to know that parenting is tough. A well-timed word of encouragement is fuel for the mission. It doesn’t take much to encourage someone. Consider stocking up on stationary and $5 Starbucks gift cards; maybe you could send a couple of parents a handwritten note and a gift card each week. My hunch is that it would provide a meaningful boost to any parent in your ministry.

EQUIP

What if you saw yourself and your ministry as a source of parenting insight, not from you, but THROUGH you? What if you set up training workshops with outside “experts” (that could always be someone from your church or community)? It doesn’t have to be in-person; it could be a video course. Or what if you started a book club for parents reading books on discipling their children? As a parent, I have learned so much from youth workers. I am deeply thankful that God has allowed me to see the eternal impact youth workers of all walks of life have on the students and parents they minister to.

RECRUITING YOUR TEAM OF ADULT VOLUNTEERS

Recruiting adult volunteers to help serve in your youth ministry is an essential task. It’s also very challenging. As we interact with youth workers around the country, it’s one of the handful of issues that come up over and over again. Youth workers are looking for strategies, techniques, and tips on recruiting and training adult volunteers. Over the years, something crystallized with me, something that I think will help you in how you think about bringing key leaders into your fold. It’s a simple concept, though its application will most definitely convict and challenge you. Ready?

THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO RECRUIT AND KEEP ADULT VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUR YOUTH MINISTRY IS TO BE EXCELLENT AT WHAT YOU DO. Google doesn’t have to stress to find employees. People are beating down the door to work for them because they are excellent in their field. The same can be said for winning athletic programs,

TRY EVERY GAME FREE FOR 30 DAYS. Does your youth group play games? Do you want to play something a little more fun than PowerPoint trivia games? When it comes to games for churches, you might notice that there are tons to choose from, but the quality is hit or miss. Unfortunately, you’re more likely to have misses than hits. Your youth ministry deserves world-class games that will play week after week!

S E K A M T WHA S E M A G OUR ? T N E R E F DIF

innovative start-ups, and yes, ministries. If your youth ministry is healthy, you will draw people to you. That’s a true statement. I’ve seen it a thousand times. Excellent youth ministries don’t have a lot of trouble recruiting volunteers. If your youth ministry is making a real difference in the lives of your students and the church, you’ll find it easier to bring people on board. If parents see you as a valuable partner in bringing their teenager closer to Christ, you’ll find it easier to bring people on board. If you are reliable and consistent, you’ll find it easier to bring people on board. If you are having purposeful fun, you’ll find it easier to bring people on board.

NEW

GAMES

Will you still have to work to bring good people on board? Sure you will. Ask a top college recruiter for a successful athletic program if he or she still has to work. But the simple truth is that quality attracts quality.

RELEASED EVERY MONTH!

It’s true in life, and it’s true in our ministries.

NEW

NEW

OF

Let’s face it: Our ministries would barely function without a great team of volunteer leaders working alongside us. Yet, keeping a team healthy and intact can be a huge challenge. Here are some tips to successfully mobilize a group of excellent adult leaders. 1. RECRUIT THE BEST. I don’t mean the coolest, most talented people. I look for humble, teachable, faithful people of integrity who love students. I can teach these people student ministry. I would rather have one solid leader (who might not be super cool) than a dozen mediocre ones. 2. PROVIDE THE BEST TRAINING. Take members of your team to ministry conferences. Develop a training plan with reading and writing requirements, opportunities to put into practice what they’re learning, and opportunities for them to train others. If you don’t require anything from your leaders, you can’t expect them to grow. 3. RECOGNIZE, RECOGNIZE, RECOGNIZE. Send a physical thank you card to every leader that’s involved in any trip or event. Take time during your announcements to publicly thank leaders who have put extra effort into making something successful. Arrange a “leadership recognition” time during a Sunday morning service where you bring up all your leaders to publicly thank them. This will not only encourage your leadership team, but it will help the church see just how many faithful people it takes in a student ministry. 4. GIVE THEM SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES. Scripture tells us that our job as ministers is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry (Eph 4). If you’ve trained your leaders well, they’re ready to take on significant roles. Let them do this, even if they

think they are not ready. A leader with significant responsibilities is a leader for the long haul. 5. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED TO DO WHAT YOU’VE ASKED. It seems like a small thing, but a leader that doesn’t have the resources they need is a pretty frustrated leader. And frustrated leaders don’t lead very well. 6. OVER COMMUNICATE. Use every means available to you to keep your leadership team in the loop. If they have knowledge and ownership in every aspect of the ministry, they’ll be more likely to lead your students in the direction you’re going. An ill-informed leadership team can be more destructive to the ministry than one that is set against it. 7. BE A TRANSPARENT MODEL FOR YOUR LEADERS. Like your students, your leaders need to know you’re real. Apologize sincerely when you’ve messed up. Be open to criticism (of course, ask them to do it in private, not in front of students) and even arrange for times that your most trusted inner circle of leadership can be completely honest with you about the ministry. Don’t assume you have all the answers. A good leadership team will be in your corner when it matters. More than that, they’ll have a more significant impact on the Kingdom. CONSIDER THIS

To say, “Youth ministry can be challenging,” is an understatement. Few callings have as many variables. Discipling teenagers is a tough calling. But what about the dynamics with the staff and leadership of your church? What about the challenges of engaging with your students’ parents? And let’s not get started on the way that ministry impacts your family. Youth ministry is not for the faint of heart, especially if you’re just getting started. Which is why Consider This is such an important book.

BIG QUESTIONS

Questions leave a mark on our lives. The questions students ask and answer help to determine who they are and who they become. In this study, students will explore the four ways we ask questions of our life and faith.

GOD IS

What’s the most important thing about us? All of us would answer this question in different ways, but maybe there’s something about us as people that’s more important than any of these things – how we think about God. GOD IS NOT

Everyone has a burden. And for some of our students, their burden is God. They wonder if God is ashamed or silent. Does He really care? In this series, you’ll lead students to question their ideas and assumptions about God so they can see God as He really is.

I AM

I Am is designed to use the burning bush account to launch into an in-depth look at who God is and how He relates to us. Students will learn that God is eternal and unchanging; that God is holy and in Christ, sees us as holy; that God is love and that Jesus is the most active expression of that love; and that God is always with His people.

REAL LIFE

Teenagers today find themselves struggling with a host of issues, both internal and external. Real Life helps students see that it’s OK not to be OK, but it’s not OK to stay there. This study boldly shows students that there is hope in Jesus. There is freedom in Jesus. There is a promise and a future in Jesus!
