UNIT ONE Lesson 1:

A Neighbor to Others

A neighbor is often understand what a neighbor is for a true Filipino and how a Filipino can be a neighbor to others. As the topic unfolds, you should be able to Read and Role-Play Have you ever been heard somebody describe a person as a “good Samaritan? What is a Good Samaritan? Would you like to know the origin of this expression? Below is a parable from the famous book, the Bible. Read it and find out why it is desirable to be like the Samaritan. Later, organize a role-playing of the parable of the parable with a group. The Good Samaritan (from Luke 10:30-34)

There was a man going from Jerusalem to Jericho who fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped and beat him, then went off, leaving him bleeding and half dead on the road. It happened that a priest going along that road saw a man, but he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite saw the man and passed by on the other side of the road. Then a Samaritan went along that the road, and when he came upon the man, he was moved with compassion. He went over him and treated his wounds with oil and wine and wrapped them with bandages. Then, he put him on his own animal and brought him an inn where he took care of him.

Analyze: Answer these questions briefly. 1. What was striking to you in the story?

2. If given a choice, which of the roles would you like to play? Why?

3. Who of the three men was a neighbor to the wounded man? Why?

4. What were the conditions of the third man for helping the wounded man?

5. What did the man do to show us what a neighbor is?

6. What then is a neighbor?

Conceptualize: Who is a neighbor? Does he/she need to live close to you? A neighbor is someone who responds to somebodyâ€&#x;s need. He/ She is not like the first two men in our parable. A neighbor is a fellow human being. He/ She is one who reaches out and responds to those in need of help. Any person can be a neighbor if he/she is willing to help someone in need. The term neighbor has a universal and yet particular meaning. It encompasses all people-known and unknown, far and near, familiar and unfamiliar. It includes not only our kin and acquaintances but also those who are strangers to us, not only the good but also the wicked, not only our friends but also our enemies. To be a neighbor is to have compassion. It is compassion that males one help people in need. There are no persons who are too far to be our neighbors, for they cease to be distant from us when we draw near them to help them. The story of the good Samaritan points out two basic human needs: the need for others and the need to be needed by others. When these needs arise, there are no racial or national boundaries, for where there is a world of people; there is a world of needs. When these are met, a neighborly environment exists, and neighbors are everywhere. YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

Conceptualize Undesirable situations are not pleasing to the eyes. Often, these situations cause depression and frustration. Of Course we should not want to be in such situations. We always want to get involved in happy moments and we want to see everyone happy. Many people say that happiness is a state of mind. Different people have different ways of making themselves happy. Sometimes, what may cause happiness for others may be the cause of our own depression. Love is the source of happiness. It is crucial in the attainment of happiness. The respect for the rights of others is a moral obligation of love. Only when love is based on justice and when justice is empowered by love can one fully enjoy happiness and peace. When this happens, an enemy can become a friend and love reigns in the neighborhood. When we start to open our doors and reach out to others, we let love help us build relationships. Then, everyone becomes a neighbor to one another. However more often than not, many of us hesitate to reach out and open doors. There are two reasons for this: One is maybe we have been hurt before for doing so and we do not want to be hurt again; the other is our inhibitions or shyness or lack of self-confidence. But none of these should hinder us from loving our neighbors and from creating wholesome... relationship. We must strive to learn and practice social skills. How do we develop wholesome relationships with others. Since we are social beings, it is our responsibility to get connected with others. Here are some suggestions for getting connected to show our love for neighbors or fellow human beings.

1. Check on your appearance. Whether we like it or not, the first thing that people see in us is how we carry ourselves. The manner we dress, our hairstyle, the color or type of clothing we put on, the way we look at others- all these externals say something about us. Do we send messages of friendliness or do we turn off people? 2. Start a conversation. A short “How are you? goes along long way. It can dig memories, share sentiments, present feelings, open relationship or get you talk to the one who received the greeting. Then, the connection gets alive. 3. Practice the art of affirming. It is desirable to end conversations with an affirmation. Affirmation is the art of expressing the good things that a person says or does. It is seeing the good in other person and verbalizing it. It leaves a lasting impression on another person and creates a good feeling. If a person leaves you with a lasting impression and a good feeling, you then become a part of his/her life. You would be someone this person will never forget. You end up becoming lasting neighbors. When we are happy, we can make other people happy. We share our happiness until we realize that everyone we meet is happy. This is the neighborhood everyone wants to be in- one where love and caring reign. Kumusta ka is a Filipino expression where we make the other feel how important he/she is to us that we want to know life is going on with him/her. It expresses our love for the other.

Put to Life A. By affirmation, we mean to express the good we see in a person. An affirming person is one who validates the good thing a person does. We have to see the good thing in everything that a person does or says. Let us see how affirming a person you can be. Write five statements that you would say after talking to someone. Examples: It was great to meet you. You lighted my day. 1. ________________________________________________________________ 2. ________________________________________________________________ 3. ________________________________________________________________ 4. ________________________________________________________________ YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

Journal Writing Write about what you have learned in your journal or your dream book. You may write a reaction or a poem or use illustrations to express what you have learned from the lesson, or simply cut pictures relevant to the lesson, If you choose the last two options (illustrations or pasting pictures), write a sentence or two as caption.

Once we open our door and we show that we care, most likely a whole range of relationships overwhelmingly comes our way. The love we give to others is the result of happiness we feel from within ourselves. Our neighbors are here, there and everywhere to give us the chance to love them so we can enjoy happiness and peace.

Lesson 3:

Looking in the Mirror

I am a special creation of god, blessed with all the abilities and potentials I can use to make this world a better place to live in.

Life is a journey. As you journey through life, never stop getting in touch with your personhood. This way, you will discover each day really beautiful and unique you area. Read and reflect Congratulate yourself. Relish the thought that you are special, that you are unique, that you are wondrous, that in the whole world, there is only ONE of you! The most wonderful thing about you is that, no matter where you are, you have the potential to grow and develop. You are just starting to do so. There is only much of you now, but you possess “hidden treasures” that you must discover and develop in older to become the best that you can ever be. Nikos Kazantzakis says, “You have your brush, you have your colors, YOU point paradise, then you go.” Do it! Take orange and magenta and blue and purple…. And green and yellow- and paint your paradise. You can do that! You can do it right now. It is your life that is essential.

14

Integrate your Learning You are a thinking, feeling, growing and developing individual. You have been gifted by God with so, much. You possess “hidden treasures” that can make you the best that you can ever be. Discover what these “hidden treasures” are and develop them. As you continue to grow, you will also discover each day that you can ever become. You will become more and more aware.

Lesson 4:

Love Is Always Good Enough

It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has. In the previous lesson, you discovered that you are a gifted fourteen-year-old with so much to offer to the world. But you also have same needs. You need to belong to a group because you care to have friends. You need to be told that you did well in the project that you worked hard for in school. You want to be recognized for a good deed that you made. You have to take your snack because you have to satisfy your hunger. But have you ever tried to pause to ask: What are needs? Or to ask yourself: What are my needs? Integrate Your Learning Food, shelter, and clothing-these are your basic needs which must be satisfied in order that you may stay alive. You also have the need to feel loved by your family and friends, to feel accepted for what you are and not for what you have and what you can do, and to be recognized for the things you have done well. You have read the story of a father who worked late nights in order to create a gift for his son. It was love that moved him to do it. He utilized his time and skills to come up with a gift which turned out to be a priceless treasure. It also turned out to be a gift which gave lasting happiness to his son. Remember: The greatest gift is often when you give a portion of yourself to others. Almost always, what really makes your life happy and meaningful is what you are and what you can do for others, not necessarily what you have.

YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

15

Lesson 5:

I can Do Anything

My share of the work of this world may be limited but the fact that it is work makes it precious. Strengths are special skills or abilities which you have. Do you realize that there are a number of strengths that you have? You should identify them and develop ways of enhancing them and using them well. On the other hand, there are certain things which you may not be able to do because of lack of certain skills. But such limitations must never bar you from further enriching yourself as a person. Integrate Your Learning: What comes to your mind whenever you come across these words: STRENGHTHS, SKILLS, and POTENTIALS? Do these words have something to do with: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Being more intelligent than others? Having more authority over others? Having more money than everyone else? Being able to do what you want and have everyone else follow you? Being known and famous?

Remember: Being aware of your “hidden treasures or treasures within gives you added self-worth and confidence in yourself. Like your life well and to the full. Enhance your strengths further and find out ways by which your limitations will not be barriers towards self-growth.

Lesson 6:

Just the Way I Feel

The worst prison would be a closed heart. Integrate Your Learning: You are a fully alive person entitled to experience your own feelings as well as to express them. Talking about your feelings should be a regular part of life. For most people, this is not so. They are not comfortable talking about their own feelings. In the same way, others are not comfortable about listening to people talk about their feelings.

YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

16

Keep in mind that feelings are neither “right” nor “wrong”, “good” nor “bad.” FEELINGS ARE JUST WHAT THEY ARE. When you are happy, say so. Show your happiness. Express it. Do the same things when you are depressed, angry, excited, or you simply want to cry. Tears are not only for girls and the soft-hearted. Man or woman- each one has his/her own feelings. All of your feeling are all right for you to have because that is how you feel-they are your feelings. No one can take them away from you unless you allow them. And no one can make you change your feelings unless you allow anyone to do so. In the same manner, you cannot take away nor change other people‟s feelings because feelings are just what they are.

Lesson 7:

I love …….Me

This is who I am. I accept myself….and I love myself.

Integrate Your Learning: Loving yourself is not being conceited. It is not being selfish and self-centered. To love oneself is to accept yourself as you are-with all your positive and not so pleasant traits, characters, behavior, features, etc. it is treating yourself with kindness. Before you can understand others, you need first to understand yourself. Look into your reasons and motivates for acting or doing things so that when others are in the same situation, you can likewise understand their reasons for behaving or doing certain things. At times, you fall short of your expectations about yourself. Do not ever think of being a failure. Accept your limitations. If you cannot do anything about having some shortcomings-no matter how much you try to improve on them- learn to forgive yourself. Forgive yourself for mistakes you have committed in the past, and promise to do better. If you can learn to forgive yourself, it will be easy for you to forgive the shortcomings of others. Forgiveness is a very powerful tool for increasing your love for yourself and your capacity to love others. Holding on to hateful feelings only imprisons you, poisons your own heart, hinders self-growth and eventually leads you to unhappiness and discontentment. Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there someone you wish would forgive you? Is there anything you need to forgive yourself for?

YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

17

If there are things in your past that are bothering you and are really keeping you from being at peace with yourself, free yourself now from that prison. Forgive yourself and others. Do it now. See how happy you will become.

Lesson 8:

Treasures You Carry Around

What we steadily, consciously, habitually think we are, that we tend to become.

Integrate Your Learning: Values are something that are freely chosen from among alternatives, acted upon and lived out. Perhaps, in your mind, you deeply feel that you have values. However, unless you act on them repeatedly and live them through life, you cannot claim them as values which you have really internalized. As you continue to live and grow, you will keep discovering more and more things about yourself and how you will react to the things around you. You will also discover that as you journey through like, there will be a lot of decisions that you have to make. And in making decisions, whether minor or major be greatly affected by the values that you hold, the nonmaterial treasures which you carry with you all the time.

Lesson 9:

Making a Difference

A person life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark.

Integrate Your Learning: There is no question that like all other people, you want to make a difference. You want to feel that in this life, you can do things that will help make your own life and the lives of other people better and more meaningful. Life becomes more meaningful when you are able to do things that you love to do and thus make yourself happy. In like manner, you feel that your life has served a purpose when you have done something that has made the lives others better and happier. Each time that you do something, decision-making is involved. Several times, you are faced with situations requiring you to come up with a decision. The more you YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL / COLLEGE

18

think about it, the more difficult it seems for you to make up your mind to come up finally with a decision. The needs and the values you hold are the basis deciding what you do each day. But, as what you have learned in the previous lesson, you hold many values. So choosing from many questions can make it difficult to make up your mind.

Lesson 10: Follow Your Dreams Let your heart be your guide… strive hard.

Integrate your Learning You have read about people who have become rich and famous. They surely did not become successful overnight. They started with a dream and set goals for themselves. They persevered and worked hard well in the pursuit of their dreams and the attainment of their goals. Success is relative. It comes when one is happy doing something and does it out of love and service. Being successful in life is not just having attained fame and accumulating material wealth. In today‟s lesson, you looked into your dreams and goals. You tried to clarify what you want to do and looked into what is standing in the way in pursuing your dreams and attaining your goals. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what it is that you want to do, whatever you hope for is possible. But you need to work for it.

Evaluation: React on the following lines from the letter you have just react by writing down your plan of action in order to live out the message of each line. 1. You cannot have what you want and work for all the time. Setbacks and letdowns Will come in different ways. ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________. 2. Lesson 11: Remembering to Thank God Today

What a sweet sound it must be to the ears of the Lord when He hears our grateful hearts in prayer.

Integrate Your Learning Nowadays, it is a common setup that both father and mother have to work in order to sustain the familyâ€&#x;s needs. Usually, Father hurries through the morning as he prepares himself to fight the traffic jams. On the other hand, Mother- who may have a job of her own- likewise hurries in order to be ready for her ride to the office. The children, left to the maids, grumble without breakfast to catch the early morning school bus.

Everyone seems to be busy these days. Family members attend too many separate activities; school affairs work, play, television, video games, computers, texting friends. They cannot seem to have the time and chance to be together at the same time.

However, the challenges and demand of the times should not be an excuse for family members to drift farther and farther from one another. Simple activities can facilitate the strengthening of family life. One activity is the evening Angelus where all the members of the family can pray together at home. Then follows the evening meal where family members are seated at the dinner table together. And it is important that dinner table conversation is pleasant. Arguments and unpleasant discussions are avoided in order that family closeness may be promoted. The prayer after meal may include a prayer of thanksgiving for Godâ€&#x;s blessings in their lives.

Remember:

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks to God at every moment.

Express Your Appreciation and Gratitude.

Expressing your love and gratitude to God can be shown in many ways. It can be expressed through our acts of love towards others; family; friends; strangers.

Lesson 2:

Thanks Dad, for Showing me how poor we are

If a father and his son can develop hobbies together or other common interest or simple be together, enjoying moments together, what they experience may be remembered for a lifetime.

Be a Source of Happiness What will you do when you faced the following situation? Put a smiling face on the space to indicate you choices. 1. You have an outreach activity in school this coming Saturday. You have been assigned to teach a group of street children some songs and game. However, you and your family have planned to go out –of-town for a picnic that same Saturday. What will you do? ____________a. I shall join school outreach activity. ____________b. After all, what is more important is the person that I am. ___________b. I shall borrow expensive clothes from my rich cousin.

Remember: You have to work hard for things that you want in life. But if you cannot have them, keep in mind that you cannot have everything. Oftentimes, you forget about what you have and concentrate on what you do not have. Instead of worrying about wanting more, be content with what you already have. If you can learn to be thankful and satisfied with what you have ,then you can be the happiest person in this world.

Lesson 3:

A life with Friends

Friends are people who help you be the best person that you are. Tell on Yourself: You Tell on Yourself You tell on yourself by the friends you seek, By the very manner in which you speak, By the way you employ your leisure time, By the way you spend your allowance so prime.
