LESSON 2: THE WATER PARTS OF THE EARTH DO AND LEARN A map is a picture of the Earth. A map is flat, not round like a globe. The biggest water part is called ocean. There are 5 oceans namely: Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Antartic Ocean. READ AND LEARN The ocean is the biggest body of salt water. The salt water of the ocean near the land is the sea. The sea is the smallest part of the ocean. The beach is the land part where sea water flows. Rivers are water parts of the Earth. Rivers begins in mountains. The rainwaters come together. The rainwaters get bigger and bigger. The rainwaters flow down the mountain sides. They flow through the land. They go out to the sea. Rivers are named by the land where they flow. A waterfall is part of a river. The water falls down from a high place. Our biggest waterfall is Maria Cristina Falls in Mindanao. People find waterfalls beautiful. Many enjoyed the rapids of Pagsanjan Falls, Laguna. A spring is rainwater stored underground. The water comes out on the hole in a ground. The water flows out. Many people use the spring water in drinking and cooking. Springs are usually found in thick wooded places. A resort has been built in Hidden Valley in AlamiĂąos, Laguna. Lakes are water parts of the Earth. A lake is a very low place filled with water. It is surrounded by land. The water in the lakes comes from rain. Some rivers flow into a lake. Our biggest lake is Laguna de Bay. LEARN THE SCIENCE WORD waterfall- water flows vertically coming from a high place ocean- biggest body of salt water spring-water coming out from the underground and flows into a body of water sea- a body of water which is part of the ocean nearest land lake- body of fresh water surrounded by land river- permanent natural flow of water larger than a stream YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL/COLLEGE

There are several kinds of water parts of earth. These water parts maybe made of fresh or salt water. These water parts maybe different from each other in some ways. The Earth is made up of more water than land.

ACTIVITY Write TRUE if the sentence is correct and FALSE if it is wrong. _________ 1. The biggest body of water is ocean. __________ 2. A lake is water surrounded by land. __________ 3. Fresh water coming out from the ground is river. _________ 4. A river begins in a mountain side and flows through the land then to the sea. _________ 5. The water of the ocean near the land is the sea.

LESSON 3: TAKING CARE OF THE EARTH DO AND LEARN The earth is home to all people. It is our only home. We have to take care of the Earth. READ AND LEARN How shall we take care of the earth? How do you take care of your own home.  Keep it clean  Throw garbage properly Rivers are not garbage cans. No waste must be thrown into rivers. Rivers “die” if they are used as garbage cans. The water stops flowing. Trees around die too. The rivers smells bad. Marine life dies. Fish, shrimps, crabs and seashells die. The water YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL/COLLEGE

smells bad. There will be no food for the people if the rivers die. Garbage thrown everywhere make the earth dirty.  Black smoke from cars makes the Earth dirty.  Smoke from factories makes the earth dirty.  All of our bad doings make our earth dirty. How can we help clean the earth?  Plant! Plant at home. Plant in school. Join planting activities on roadsides. The leaves of the plants take in the gas given off by cars. The plants use the gas. The more plants they are, the more gas are taken in. the more gas taken in, the cleaner the Earth becomes.  Save water! Use a basin in washing dishes. Close the faucet when not in use. Use a glass when brushing your teeth. Use a sprinkler in watering plants. Fix leaks. Avoid playing and wasting water. LEARN THE SCIENCE WORD marine life-animals and plants living in water space-area outside of the Earth REMEMBER  The Earth is our only home.  We must care of it. Both the land part and the water part of the Earth must be kept clean.  Plants help a lot in keeping the Earth clean.  The land and the water parts of the earth must not be made into garbage cans.

Sometimes there is much rain. There are dark clouds. The wind blows strong. We do not see the sun. We have a rainy day. Sometimes the rain does not stop for days. The streets are flooded. The rivers overflow. The wind blows strong. There is a storm. We wear thick clothes We wear a kind of clothes for a kind of weather. We eat a kind of food for a kind of weather.

LEARN THE SCIENCE WORK weather-condition outside in a particular place at a particular time storm- strong wind with rain in atmosphere thunder-rumbling sound which follows lightning lightning- a flash produced by two things rubbing together flood- overflow of water overflow- to fill too full: to flow over the edge

REMEMBER  The sun shines and the wind is calm on a fine weather day.  The wind blows strong and there is much rain on a rainy weather.  The wind is strong, there is thunder and lightning, rain pours on a stormy weather.  The kind of weather affects our activities of the day.  It also affects the clothes we are to wear and even the food we are to eat.

LESSON 2 :WHAT WE SEE IN THE SKY DO AND LEARN Look at the sky. Name the things you see in the sky. Are things in the sky during the day different from those during the night? How different is it? Why is this so? READ AND LEARN There are no stars. There is no moon. Where are the stars and moon during the day. Look at the sky at night. There are stars and moon but no sun. Where did the sun go? Why is the day sky different from the night sky? The sun seems to move across the sky. In the morning, you see the sun come out in the east. During the day, you see it move across the sky. In the evening, you see it go down in the west. It seems that the sun changes position in the sky. Does the sun move? The sun does not move from its place. It does not change positions. It is the Earth that moves around the sun.

LEARN THE SCIENCE WORD day sky- time when the sun shines night sky- time when the sun sets east- part of the horizon when the sun rises west- part og the horizon where sun sets change positions- change the place or posture REMEMBER    

The sun can be seen in the day sky. The moon and the stars can be seen at night sky. The clouds can be seen at day time and night time. The sun does not move from its place nor does change positions.

LESSON 3: WE MOVE AROUND THE SUN DO AND LEARN Get a top and spin it. See how the top moves round and round. It moves on a pointed end at the bottom. Mark a point on a top. Make it spin. See the mark you made. See how the mark makes a full turn. READ AND LEARN Use the globe. Choose a spot in the globe. Place a small flag on the spot. Make the globe spin like the top. Look closely at the flag. Did the flag go around as the globe spins? Did the flag go back to the same position? Earth moves this way. It spins around. It makes one full turn. One full turn of the Earth makes one day. Earth moves in another way. It moves around the sun. It spins as it moves around the sun. As it spins, some parts of the Earth get sunlight. It is day on those parts. As it spins, some parts of the Earth have no sunlight. It is night on those parts. The Earth continues to spin as it moves around the sun. day changes into night. Night changes into day. The sun stays in the sky. The stars stay in the sky. The moon stays in the sky. We do not see the sun at night. We do not see the moon in the day. The sun shines so bright. We do not notice the light of the stars and the moon. The sun overpowers their light. Try this. Turn on a flashlight in a dark room. This is night. The place is away from the sun’s light. So stars can be seen. Turn the flashlight in a bright room. This is day. The place gets light from the sun. Do you notice the light from the flashlight? The sun stays in the sky. The stars stay in the sky. The moon stays in the sky. We see the sun’s light in the day. We see the moon and the stars at night. LEARN THE SCIENCE WORD YOUNG JI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL/COLLEGE
