UPSTREAM project type: COLLABORATIVE URBAN REVITALIZATION lecture/tutor: ANDREW FEENEY location: MOONEE PONDS CREEK, MELBOURNE collaboration: JIAYU HU, GAGANI WARMAKULASOORIYA studio: UPSTREAM tools: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR * Group responsibilities included group leader, all poster design, site analysis, computer graphics, data collection, and speech writing.

UPSTREAM is a project which was based on community analysis, public communication and group communication, public collaboration and participation. We had to ask ourselves some questions: How do we define "improvement"? INSTITUTIONAL REFORM / LOCALISM What is our role as a landscape architect? OUR ROLE IS TO COACH LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO RAISE THEIR VOICES THUS TO FIND POWER WITHIN THEMSELVES. What design approch should we use? DESIGN INTERVENTIONS AND ACTIVATIONS - to disrupt the normal pattern - create a simulation of a natural disaster - make the public to think for themselves, to discover the problem and feeling responsible to make a change.

(above) the DOMINO EFFECT (left) A poster made for on-site activation. Balloons are the representation of people’s voices and concerns, colour act as a ‘language’ that the public ‘speak’ to communicate and interact with others.

Alongside with all essential design skills, I am also very clear and determined about what I am and what I should offer as a landscape architrect. I want to become the link and media between the decision makers and the public.

I have gained confidence and abilities to communicate with group members and lead a great team.

UPSTREAM

This project required my team to communicate on a daily basis, this project was not an ordinary design project, we did not produce drawings nor plans, it was a thinking process. But I have learnt as many knowledge as other design subjects, if not more. We were connected to the people behind design, the soft and most important element in any design process.

ECO-CITY

project type: REGIONAL AND COMMUNITY PLANNING location: TARNEIT, VICTORIA studio: FRINGE

lecture/tutor: JANE SHEPHERD collaboration: INDIVIDUAL PROJECT tools: AUTOCAD, SKETCHUP, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR, PEN AND INK

TARNEIT, VICTORA DESIGNER: YIREN SUN S3261752

Tarneit is one of the peri-urban areas around Melbourne, it features a skewed population (notably a loss of young adults & an ageing population); an increasing economic divide and a loss of a ‘sense of community ’ (especially outside of the townships); This area is in need of more employment oppor tunities and basic urban ser vices. ECO-CIT Y provides local community a new lifestyle, it is build on connections and communications, it is open and welcoming, but also offers safety and enclosure at the same time.

Vegetation

Roads

ECO - CITY The rooftop walkway provide residents with convenient travel conditions, people can enjoy the surrounding scenery in the process of arrival. There are small public places around every corner, such as children’s playground and a small garden, and there will be the place where people can socialize.

UPs and DOWNs project type: PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN location: BROADMEADOWS studio: GHOST SPACE

lecture/tutor: SARAH HAQ collaboration: INDIVIDUAL PROJECT tools: AUTOCAD, SKETCHUP, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR, PEN AND INK

This site is located in front of Broadmeadows Library, next to City of Hume, surrounded by train station, shoppingmalls and schools; However it has been ignored and missused due to its site condition: over exposed, very limited seating and lack of vegetation. Before redesigning this space, an intervention and Different sized corrugated cardboard box and crates collected from the broarmeadows shopping centre near by. activation were designed to re-introduce this space to the public. My intention was to seek the potential of this space and show it to the local community.

“THE STORY OF BOXES” INTERVENTION & ACTIVATION

book exchange market set-up site has now been turned into a market place, people can now bring in second hand books and start exchanging!

All boxes and crates will form a big cube, this form is related to other geometric architecture buildings on site.

Intervention: paint the exterior of the cube. Blue: global learning centre/ the age library Green: hume city council

book exchange market buy/sell/exchange second hand books/magazines/ CDs.

pack and leave the site nice and clean! pack everything you’ve got in these boxes and take them home with you.

UPs and DOWNs

Open/ public space should offer ‘great accessibility and freedom of choice for people to pursue a variety of activities’, the space then can become loose, as this looseness requires ‘social and physical conditions’.

(above) I was interested in shadows, i always found the harmony of soft and hard shadows tobe very attractive. So I wanted to create this harmony and bring it to this space.

(above & left) movable sculptural seats are made of hard plastic, which is light, cheap and water resistant. The sculptural seats are connected to the ground by a very strong nylon rope with self locking swivel hook on both ends, these hooks then lock on to the fixed connection point on the seat and on the ground. (not to scale)

(right)These adjustable seats are designed to save as much space as possible, allow the space become flexible and suitable for multi-purposes; and more importantly, the intention is to turn the space in to a real ‘public space’, where people act as a part of the space, also to accentuate indeterminate uses and make possible different types of groupings and individuals.

IN THE SHADOWS project type: PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN location: CARLTON, MELBOURNE studio: IN THE SHADOWS

lecture/tutor: RHYS WILLIAMS collaboration: INDIVIDUAL PROJECT tools: AUTOCAD, SKETCHUP, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN, PEN AND INK

The design proposal fosters the essence of shade/shadow, from its origin to its surroundings, by looking at shadow as a living matter. As a landscape designer, I often look at the landscape first and then the details, this studio requires a different way of thinking.

IN THE SHADOWS

(above) Transformation of shadows from 9am to 6pm

(left) This shadow transformation becomes the visual characteristic, a visual memory/experience is created.

(right) These cutting curves gives a sense of security and a strong sense of existence; At the same time, they are functional, they provide appropriate amount of shade, and the distribution of seats devide this space and create a physical path.

IN THE SHADOWS

(above) Winter

(above) Summer Vegetation growing in the summer gives the shadow more density, as it might be required during hot weathers.
