Sensing the Transition A Reading Room in Grand Central Terminal

2019

New Yorkers spend so much time traveling so I think that will be an opportunity for reading. Grand Central Terminal is such an important and busy transportation hub in NYC with enormous space, a complex vertical connection, and huge crowds. Vanderbilt Hall can be seen as a transitional space between 42 street and the main concourse. People have to pass through here before they arrive at the main concourse. Everyone moves so fast, so I think the reading room here maybe can be used as a waiting area which provides a place to slow down and relax a bit. This reading room is designed for exchanging old books and reading, aim to explore the method of slow people down from a designer's perspective.

SEC2

Located at the intersection of Park Avenue and 42nd Street, Grand Central Terminal is a landmark and essential transportation hub that can accommodate large numbers of trains and people. It is designed to be enormous enough to handle the huge crowd which passes through every day. Nowadays, it is also a destination for shopping, dining, and some special events. This site shows an entirely opposite environment with a reading room - which requires quiet and peace. Therefore, the key to this project is how to slow people down and provide a transition from a BUSY city context to a SLOW reading space.

SECTION

LONG SECTION

Slow Path

A long ramp to expand the experience, maximize the length, and get closer to the building.

For different users. the space provides two paths with opposite experiences -Slow Path and Quick Path. Books are displayed along with the ramp. The slow zone has a long ramp while the fast zone has astaircase. Here is the space to slow people down, expand the journey and encourage people to enjoy a moment with this historical landmark . The slow path and the quick path have the same destination, but the ramp maximizes the journey.

Quick Path

A staircase quickly brings people to the destination - the main reading room. This zone is designed to be as accessible as possible. The selfcheck out machines are located here so they can quickly leave books and borrow books.

In the Slow Path, sensory factors play an important role. All the sensory strategies are gradually changing to achieve different reading environments. ramp. There are four vertical translucent boxes and involve the existing window. The users will walk into the vertical boxes which are covered by fabric; the fabric also works as a filter of lighting. Overally, the space is transforming from low to extreme high, to low, then to high again, from vertical( in the box) to horizontal(reading room), from small(reading box) to huge(reading room), from extremely open (seating zone) to relatively open(reading box and ramp) to extremely enclosed(main reading room), from noisy to quiet, from filtered to unfiltered. Each part is a threshold between two spaces.

What creates a quick transition and what creates a slow transition? Through the manipulation of light, color, and a sequence of space with different scales and openness, this project explores the experience of transitioning between the noisy transportation hub of Grand Central Terminal and the elevated quiet reading room. These models show different spatial conditions - in different scales, straight or serpentine, transparent or opaque, open or enclosed.

UNFOLDED ELEVATION

Through these tests of a series of sensory parameters, this project demonstrates that these multi-sensory elements are useful in impacting the emotion of both people and space, and shape an experience. People will get different reading experiences when they walk in these spaces with different scales, transparency and lighting conditions. Scale plays a core role in this project. Since the project is sited in Grand Central Terminal, both transition sequences had to negotiate between this monumental space and a more intimate space for reading. The shrouded scaffolding system serves to re-frame and re-contextualize monumental elements of the space, such as a window or a chandelier, allowing the user a more intimate connection to the building. The three main reading spaces: the seating zone, the reading box, and the main reading room show the difference between standing in a huge space, or in a really small scale space, allowing people to focus on their immediate surroundings or reading material.

This design builds a very intimate relationship between people and the existing construction. The structure borrows the idea from scaffolding system which is a very prototype of a city. For example, the ramp and verticle boxes guide people to observe the c o l u m n s a n d o r n a m e nt s o r t h e historical building and outside view; the reading pod really captures the chandelier, create an intimate living room feeling for people to get higher and closer to the chandelier which is largely invisible in our life.

Floating Box Music Club Design

2018

A music club located in the low east side of New York which is using "MUSIC" as a communication media, aiming to encourage people to meet neighbors, hang out with different people with age and culture background. This club acts as urban collective participation, provides an opportunity for residents talking or sharing information through music activities.Â

We've been asked to design a club in the Low East Side of New York to encourage the local residents commmunicate with each otehr. One of the most interesting character of this area is people are all from different culture background. In the site research, we noticed lots of residents here with high education don't get corresponding high income. Therefore, we guess that residents here are difficult to immerse themselves in the local community.

Lighting

Sensory Analysis Lighting : The whole space for music performances keeps a dim ambience, the reception and offices near the southward window has sufficient natural light. Sound: The space keeps a close conenction between each other. The ground floor is entierly open. All the panels are acoustic panels.

Sound

Privacy: The transition from the entrance to ground floor to the second floor is from open to private. Administration and office are seperated into two corners. open administration membership Privacy

EXPERIENCING This club has a double-height space which is divided into two clear levels with distinct functionality. The first floor is flexible with moveable panels on tracks. The panels are able to achieve spatial configurations: rooms with different sizes provide many possibilities for various functions.

COMMUNICATION The second floor is composed of 11 boxes. The five central boxes which I call 'experience boxes' are all connected, and thus visitors can walk through. All the boxes are hung from the ceiling. Visitors in the experience boxes are able to see what happens downstairs and join the activities they are interested in. This creates an interesting communication vertically and encourage people to interact.

TING Community Center Design

2017

"TING", means "stop" in Chinese. This is a landscape architectural project of a community center for the residents in Anhui, China. This neighborhood has a peaceful environment and well-protected eco-system. The design builds a realy close link with the nature. To maintain sustainability, many local materials are reused in this project. The design thesis rethinks the current

situation of over- reliance on modern technology and busy metropolis life. Nowadays, everything is designed for achieving efficiency and convenience. This community center encourages visitors to slow down, walk through an untraditional route, feel and listen to the world. The project considers the experience in this space as a continuous journey from the external to the internal space. People are able to explore the building in different heights and walk around the construction both horizontally and vertically.

Construction

The site of the community center is located on an island. It is not too far
away from the residential area, but isolate the community center from the crowd. It has a good view and is easy to access. The spacious water area makes this area ventilated. - CULTURE AND HISTORY This place in China has a famous architectural style and unique culture. These historical elements are used in the design.
The layout follows the traditional Chinese Courtyard House structure, and the walls are painted in black and white which is a classical architectural style. With the development of China, many people have left here and gone into urban locales. This has caused a large amount of abandonment and demolition of old buildings. To protect the history, the newly designed constructions have recycled and reformed some waste materials such as bamboo and old slate tiles.

--LONG DETOUR-The outdoor corridor bridge is designed in a coiled way wrapping around the constructions. The long wooden corridor bridge connects all the buildings together, and also connects the roof garden and ground, it thus provides views from different heights. This consideration is to force a 'long detour' and push people to explore the construction from different angles. N

EXTERIOR

--LISTEN TO THE SOUND AROUND YOU -Glass is a main material in the tea room. Due to the long rain season in this city, the intention of the walls with lots of openings is engaging people to quiet down, listen the sound of wind and rain, and get a moment of peace.

PASTRY SHOP Pastry Shop Design

2017

This project uses Farnsworth House as a site and aims to design a new Cafe and pastry shop for a French chef. The contrast between the new function and existing construction is a big challenge. Compared with a modern urban context with a super rapid pace of life, one of the benefits of the site is its forest environment with sufficient sunshine and relaxed ambience. Starting from the research of the chef 's previous experience, this project uses the color of his pastry desserts as an inspiration and tries to represent the chef ’s identity. The design pays much attention to the lighting and materials selection, and thus gives customs a different sensory feeling. The project combines the surrounding natural environment with indoor space while keeping a good interaction. The whole atmosphere is easy, comfortable and neutral.

The space is divided into three areas. The free-standing area is furnished with yellow and
blue chairs, white tables and starry lighting fixtures to create an active and welcoming atmosphere. The private seating zone has dim light and sofas with soft textiles to create an intimate environment for private conversation. The bakers zone is set up for displaying desserts. The color temperature of the lighting is around 2700k, it’s a bit warm to highlight the color of the pastry and makes it more attractive. The copper above is to reflect the light and make the space more modern.

HIP OFFICE Design

2018

This is an office design for a designer's incubator in New York. As a coworking space and incubator for artists, the aim of this space is to provide as many as possible resources for users and encourage them to work with each other, make comments and share creativities. That’s why the design follows the layout of a circular library. The core of a library is putting all the resources around users, so that it makes everything conveniently accessible. This office uses the geometry of the octagon, which is the shape of the existing columns. Using the central octagonal zone and staircase as a central part, all the amenities for various functions such as open work stations, lounge seating, conference rooms and fabrication equipment are all placed around it which makes all of the resources accessible and flexible.

The Octagonal Space plays a significant role in the project. It could be used as an event space, and also could be used as a communication venue. It is not a very serious or formal place but shows a young and active altitude. In the meantime, the stair contains a storage space. Architecturally speaking, the shelf system hides the existing columns and makes the space neater. The shelf system maintains communication in the office because users can see each other through the openings. Thus it keeps an interactive working environment.

First Floor Plan

Second Floor Plan

Different with the first floor which is all for sharing, the second floor is more personal and furnished with independent workstations and private offices. However, it still keeps a language of co-working for different teams to work together. The circular layout keeps the same language as the first floor, It is open enough for chatting and sharing ideas while keeping independent teams separate.

DING'S Residential Design

2017

The client likes Japanese culture, that's why the whole apartment follows a Japnese style which is noted for its Zen-like aesthetic and simplicity. The beauty of Japanese or Chinese architecture shows on clean lines, some unique patterns and draws its influence from thousands of years of Chinese culture and decorating. The wood arch screen draws inspirations from classical chinese garden and frames the outside view. All the furniture follow a same triditional japanese and Chinese form, and create a relaxing and minimal living style.

HALLWAY

The main house has a more minimal style. Different with triditional Chinese interior design style, this design includes a sleek surface of furniture and allusions to nature, simplifies the complex patterns and lines, but still matain a sense of Zen and peace.

LIVING ROOM

The tea room and large dining room are separated from the main apartment, thus keeps a wellprotected privacy. This room is big and located near a big window which provides perfect day

lighting. By using large amount of wood furniture and a warm color tone, the space looks warm and good for family events. Geometry is another part of the design, circle and squares - the lines form an elegant graphical layout.
