PUBLISHER’S LETTER

BEAUTY ISSUE

BEAUTY DEFINED Beau·ty: A combination of qualities such as shape, color or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight; a combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense. This is the formal definition of beauty found in the Oxford Dictionary. As you can clearly see, the definition is not limited to physical beauty.

ANN K. CASTLE FOUNDER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & PUBLISHER

Physical beauty is subjective. The diversity of opinions and definitions of beauty make life so interesting. It stimulates conversations and hearts. It bonds some and divides others. Yet what it comes down to is how you wear your own personal beauty. Where is your comfort zone when applying cosmetics or purchasing that special little black dress? When you are comfortable with how you look, it affects how you feel. You carry yourself with more confidence and your grace then defines your beauty. Somehow when we are at our personal best, the inner beauty and positive energies we display radiate outward. In creating this issue we particularly had a great amount of fun. Many brain-storming sessions revealed how we defined beauty. We all had different opinions, but diversity makes life more interesting and the content and conversations richer. In this issue, a little known, gentle procedure called cosmetic acupuncture is explained, and if you need a major makeover with little downtime—weekend lipo might be what you’re looking for. We created a special beauty section just for this issue to introduce some local beauty companies—a few you may know and some that may surprise you. Our Connection spotlights feature Pauline Youngblood of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics and Dr. Kevin Major of Coastal Vascular Center. And our Beyond Green Living takes a closer look at inner beauty. Whatever your comfort level is and however you define your own personal beauty, I hope you enjoy this special issue. With Peace, Love, Blessings and Gratitude,

“Taking joy in living is a woman’s best cosmetic.”

Mineral Basics wi PAULINE YOUNGBLOOD WAS WORKING AS A MEDICAL AESTHETICIAN WHEN SHE DISCOVERED THE POWER OF NATURAL MINERAL COSMETICS. “I WAS IN DAILY CONTACT WITH PATIENTS WHO HAD SEVERELY TRAUMATIZED SKIN FROM HARSH LASER TREATMENTS, ACNE, ROSACEA AND COSMETIC SURGERIES,” RECALLED YOUNGBLOOD, 47, OF WESTLAKE VILLAGE. 10

YOUNGBLOOD MINERAL COSMETICS

“Such patients often took up to six months before their skin returned to normal and I simply was not satisfied with the makeup options during that time,” she said. Therein, Youngblood discovered her goal: to give women the power to conceal and correct imperfect complexions. “I began working with chemists to develop a suitable option—a product that would cover raw, inflamed or discolored skin, while allowing it to breathe and heal,” she said. “This led to my work with natural mineral cosmetics.”

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics “The concept of mineral makeup was great, but the quality was missing,” Youngblood said of other mineral products. “The colors weren’t realistic, they were too pink or orange and they looked artificial.” With that, she began formulating her own natural mineral foundation. “It provides excellent coverage and a natural appearance without clogging the skin,” she explained. “My patients experienced such dramatic success with my new formula that they continued using it long after their skin had healed.” Before long, patients and friends convinced Youngblood to make this natural mineral foundation commercially available, and in 1996, she founded Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

Why minerals? A mineral is an inorganic solid substance that occurs naturally in rocks and in the ground. When used in cosmetics, these micronized crystals reflect light to help smooth the appearance of fine lines and blemishes, Youngblood explained. “Minerals provide rich color with natural pigments from the earth — unlike traditional makeup formulas, which contain harmful petroleum dyes and other chemical-based additives,” she said “Minerals also naturally provide sun protection, keeping skin healthy and youthful.”

“Minerals do not support the growth of bacteria or microbes, and pose a lower risk of allergic reaction,” Youngblood added. “In fact, minerals are great for use on skin recovering from harsh medical procedures, and on problem skin (with) conditions like rosacea, acne and discoloration.”

Ingredients “At Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, we use only the purest, most premium grade minerals,” Youngblood said. “We refine our minerals using our proprietary milling process.” Although many mineral lines claim to be “jet-milled” or “triple-milled,” not all milling processes achieve superior results and, oftentimes, result in potentially dangerous ultrafine particles known as nanoparticles, she said. “Youngblood does not use nanoparticles in its formulas.” When comparing mineral cosmetic lines, Youngblood advises to always check for synthetic ingredients such as alcohol, artificial fragrance, mineral oil, talc or petroleum “Talc is a filler, and can block pores, dry out skin and cause irritation,” she explained. Youngblood products do not contain talc, or any other fillers. “Instead, we use rice starch as a healthy alternative to talc and various botanicals and vitamins to create our safe, effective formulas,” Pauline said. We are also proud to be paraben-free.”

A Complete Line Pauline’s natural mineral foundation is the flagship product, and Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics is now a comple te line, offering dozens of products in a comprehensive palette of shades with realistic skin tones and beautiful, natural finishes. “Youngblood continues to create topquality products that are innovative in both formulation and packaging,” Pauline said. Some of the best-sellers include the mineral primer, a colorless base that helps enhance the performance of makeup throughout the day; and the mineral rice setting powder, which creates a

flawless, matte finish, thanks to a special blend of rice starch, cornstarch and skinnourishing minerals. The pressed mineral rice powder is a pressed version of the silky mineral rice setting powder, offered in a convenient compact for on-the-go use. “This product controls shine and helps diminish the appearance of pores and fine lines to create a flawless, long-lasting matte finish,” Youngblood explained. The liquid mineral foundation, which quenches parched skin for a healthy radiance, is a special blend of rare reduced salt deep sea water, botanicals and more than 20 ocean minerals. Additional products in the line include blush, lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss, eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara.

Versatility Those unfamiliar with mineral makeup will find that Youngblood’s products are versatile. “For example, the natural mineral foundation provides buildable coverage,” Youngblood explained. “It can be used as a concealer to treat areas of concern, while converting to a liquid by mixing it with your daily moisturizer, primer or sunscreen.” When using Youngblood, women quickly feel and see the difference on their face, she said. “Confidence is instantly regained. My products are lightweight—skin can still breathe and heal.”

Instilling Confidence Youngblood’s ultimate goal is to bring back confidence in women who use her products. Aside from that, Youngblood said she is “just living life and enjoying my children and creating healthy products for women.” Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics are sold in select spas and salons. They can also be purchased online at www.ybskin.com.

Kevin M. Major, MD, FACS Vascular Specialist Offers Non-invasive and Surgical Therapies by Alicia Doyle

KEVIN MAJOR WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE ADVICE HE RECEIVED WHEN HE STARTED HIS VASCULAR SURGERY TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN 2004. “THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR TOLD ME, ‘KEVIN, I EXPECT YOU TO KNOW HOW TO DO MOST OPERATIONS. OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS, WE’LL SHOW YOU HOW TO DO THEM BETTER AND WE’LL TRAIN YOU IN ENDOVASCULAR THERAPY. WHAT YOU WILL MOST LEARN DURING THE NEXT TWO YEARS IS WHEN TO OFFER A PATIENT ANY TYPE OF THERAPY.’.”

DR. KEVIN M. MAJOR, MD, FACS

Now a vascular specialist who can offer non-invasive and surgical therapies, Dr. Major particularly enjoys the challenge of deciding the most appropriate therapy. “With regard to the dialysis patients I take care of, my goal is keep their dialysis access working and working well,” said Dr. Major, adding that he sees these patients regularly to evaluate their dialysis access and perform endovascular interventions early to maintain the access. For patients with arterial disease, “my ultimate responsibility is to perform needed therapies to avoid amputation.” For venous patients, “I offer careful evaluation and appropriate interventions. When needed, surgical procedures to eliminate the symptoms and signs of venous insufficiency are the goal.” Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Major later lived just outside of Annapolis, Maryland until he moved to Irvine at the age of 11 and finished primary schooling there. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego before attending medical school at the Medical College of Ohio. He spent six years at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center training in general surgery and surgical critical care, and is board-certified in both specialties. Following completion of general surgery training at Cedars, he chose to pursue specialty training in vascular surgery at the University of Southern California. Dr. Major explained what led him to pursue vascular surgery training. General surgery training programs include rotations on the vascular surgery service. “During my second year of training, one of my attendings had just finished vascular surgery training and was doing angiograms and angioplasties on the arteries of the legs,” Dr. Major recalled. These procedures were typically done by Radiology. “I came to realize that the modern vascular surgeon is much more than a surgeon— he/she is a physician of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. Because the modern vascular surgeon can offer noninvasive therapies as well as standard surgical therapies, we are most qualified to determine which therapy is most appropriate for any particular patient.” “Following completion of vascular surgery training in 2006, my wife and I moved to the Portland, Oregon area,” recalled Dr. Major, now a resident of Camarillo. “I worked in a six-person surgical group and enjoyed Portland,” Dr. Major continued. “We had a son

and wanted to move back to Southern California to be closer to family. An opportunity arose, and we took it. It has turned out to be a great decision.”

Coastal Vascular Center Dr. Major joined Dr. Gregory Albaugh at Coastal Vascular Center in 2010 and performs all aspects of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. With locations in Oxnard and Camarillo, the practice features 12 staff members including five medical assistants with more than 30 years of combined experience, and three billing and insurance specialists with more than 50 years of combined experience. The staff also includes a registered nurse with 15 years’ experience in critical care, a radiologic technologist with 17 years’ experience with emphasis in interventional radiology, and a nurse practitioner with added certifications to assist in surgery. A full-time vascular ultrasound technologist is also employed by the practice. This allows Coastal Vascular Center to perform indicated vascular ultrasounds in the office on the day of a patient’s visit. Arterial disease is a big part of my practice. “Patients are typically referred for evaluation of symptoms of arterial disease such as calf cramps while walking,” Dr. Major said. “Taking care of the growing number of people who require dialysis due to kidney failure keeps us busy.” For patients with symptoms of venous disease, “we can perform non-invasive procedures to treat venous insufficiency and are fully trained and experienced with surgical techniques to treat venous insufficiency when surgery is the best option.” Dr. Major is on staff at Community Memorial Hospital where he serves at the vice chair of the Department of Surgery. He is also on staff at St. John’s Oxnard, St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital, Ventura County Medical Center and Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center. “With offices in Oxnard and Camarillo I can see and treat patients close to their home and perform any needed surgery at the hospital of their choice,” he said.

Coastal Vascular Center is located at 1901 Outlet Center Drive, Suite 230 in Oxnard, 805.983.6233 and 3901 Las Posas Road, Suite 16 in Camarillo, 805.484.6900. For more information visit. For more information visit www. coastalvas cularcenter.com.

Her interest in pure, organic skin care stemmed largely from her own personal needs. “For years, I struggled with my skin and tried product after product, but was largely disappointed in both my results and the integrity of a lot of ‘natural’ products on the market,” Hope recalled. “When I took the time to actually examine the ingredients therein, it’s no surprise — I found synthetic fragrances, parabens, colorants and chemicals,” she said. With that, Hope resorted to using simple ingredients like olive oil and herbal teas

Pure Necessities For as long as she can remember, Toni Tramel has been drawn to natural skin care products, organic food and sunshine. “I never bought into the hype of mass-produced, chemically laden products that make outrageous claims to reverse the aging process,” Tramel said. “I know that living a healthy lifestyle and treating your body good, not only from the inside, but from the outside, as well, can have a positive effect on your skin and health. After all, your skin is your largest organ and 60 percent of what goes on your skin enters your body.” After retiring from a career in advertising and marketing, Tramel was looking to start a new business that would allow her be creative and offer a product to people who prefer an alternative to those “mass-produced, chemically laden products.” “What was my full-time hobby gone wild started seven years ago, and is now a business,” she said. Today, Pure Necessities is an all natural skin care and candle company based in Westlake Village.

“Our recipes are simple and are made in small batches because we want each item to be delivered fresh without sitting on a shelf for months,” Tramel said. “Our products are paraben-free… We use only quality ingredients and believe me, it has taken years to find the right suppliers with the quality ingredients that we expect.” Some of her best sellers include luxurious body butters made from shea butter; delicious and rich body scrubs; intensely hydrating shea butter balm; fresh cucumber face and neck creme; and moisturizing handmade botanical soaps. “This was the impetus for the Remédios Skin Care line,” said Guthrie, who tapped into her own extensive skin care experience, training and expertise, conducting hundreds of hours of research and development. Working with top dermatologists and FDA-approved laboratories, she created and developed Remédios, her own line of skin care products. “Remédios Skin Care products are among the most irritant-free and natural on the market today,” Guthrie said. “We’re an advanced botanical treatment line that uses only the purest, most potent ingredients such as peptides, botanicals, herbs and extracts.” The products can be purchased at Lupe’s office in Agoura Hills, as well as online. Remédios features seven product lines: Clinical Anti-Aging, Target Solutions, Vitamin C, Hydra Essence, Enzymatic System, Cosmetics and Body & Spa.

What can be done in a few hours during a weekend Lipo procedure cannot be done in a year of working out and dieting. HD Lipo uses gentle vibration to maintain patient comfort, decrease procedure time, increase skin tightening and improves the smoothness of the results over other liposuction technologies.

Who can be treated for HD Lipo? It is for anyone that wants to improve his or her over-all well being. Many patients have localized fatty deposits that have been resistant to diet and exercise and/or are within 30 pounds of their desired weight. This technology provides the ability to reduce large areas of the body and to target individual problem areas. Unlike many Lipo techniques, HD Lipo can also be used to treat patients that want a jumpstart to help improve their confidence and comfort during exercise, and have the ability to help with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart conditions, and high blood pressure. The most important factor is the commitment to maintaining healthy, stable weight loss.

How does HD Lipo work? The vibration of the HD Lipo device gently removes the fat while keeping the connective tissues intact and helps to stimulate the production of collagen for up to 6 months post-treatment. Some patients experience bruising, swelling, and for the most part, some minimal discomfort. Excessive skin folds caused by large volumes of fat removed often tighten up during this period and most have excellent results with Lipo alone. Immediately following the procedure, the patient is dressed in a compression garment and is able to walk out of the office. The soreness is compared to what you may feel after an intense workout and most patients can return to work within a few days, thus giving it the nickname “Weekend Lipo”. HD Lipo is affordable and offers very little down time. There is no general anesthesia, which takes away the majority of the risk. For more information on weekend Lipo, visit Daria Jade Salon and Medspa’s website www.dariajade.com.

Anti-Aging medicine is the future and you can be a part of it.

HERA HEALTH CARE A Holistic esthetic restorative and Anti-Aging medical practice

T

he science and study of Aging is constantly evolving and new discoveries offer hope that we can maintain our health, mobility, vision and mental sharpness well past the 8th and 9th decades of our lifes.

There are many names used to describe the practice of medicine that addresses Aging. At HERA Health Care, Anti-Aging symbolizes our FIGHT against associating getting older with being sick, with being plagued by chronic illness and cancer, unable to enjoy life because of pain, limited mobility, impaired vision and mental decline. Anti-Aging is about living our life with purpose, restoring health and balance to our body using the most up to date information

and technology, using functional medicine, addressing the root cause of the imbalance and correcting it, so that we can live life in our body and enjoy it until the end. When we are young and strong and too busy living, most of us don’t think about getting older until a major problem is discovered or we suddenly realize we are not able to do the same things that were so easy in the past. Taking action when we are healthy is much easier than restoring the balance we lost.

BEAUTY THROUGH BALANCE

As they age, many people begin to consider cosmetic procedures to maintain or smooth their faces. Most of these procedures are invasive and painful, involving the injection of toxins, artificial fillers and surgery. Many of those who do not want to undergo a drastic procedure have turned to cosmetic acupuncture. Cosmetic acupuncture involves needling points on the face and body to balance the body’s chi — or internal harmony. Each part of our face has a corresponding internal organ according to Eastern medicine and the philosophies of acupuncture.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

When a person is trying to improve a portion of his or her face with cosmetic acupuncture, it requires that the corresponding organ be treated, as well. For example, if you have bags under your eyes, that means that there is a stagnation in the stomach, kidney or liver chi. Treating the bags under the eyes will require needling on the face as well as these corresponding points on the body. The length of each session depends on the original condition of the skin and the patient’s age. According to Dr. Joseph Kim of Shekinah Health, it takes one session a week for four weeks to begin seeing results in a particular area. After four sessions, Kim gives patients four weeks off from treatment in order to allow the

cells to regenerate and collagen to form. It is this cell regeneration and collagen boost that makes the face smoother and tighter. After the four-week period of rest, additional sessions may be necessary based on results. By stimulating the body to produce collagen naturally, the patient can experience the results of a face lift or injections without the recovery time or potential health risks. As Kim explains, the collagen in the skin is stimulated by moving the energy into the skin with the needle. When the needle punctures the skin, blood flow increases, nerve conductivity at the skin’s surface is stimulated and healthy lymphatic draining occurs. This stimulation causes collagen to produce under the skin in the subcutaneous layer. A patient who has undergone a cosmetic acupuncture cycle as described here can expect his or her results to last six months to a year. Cosmetic acupuncture can also be used as a preventative measure for those who are trying to maintain the quality of their skin. By stimulating the body to produce collagen, cosmetic acupuncture can help to slow some of the signs of facial aging. The procedure can also have benefits for other skin ailments such as acne. Many adults suffer breakouts in certain areas of the face. By making changes to the diet and performing acupuncture to both the face and corresponding organs, the breakouts can be treated. Unlike Western procedures, cosmetic acupuncture promotes overall health in addition to improving the appearance of the skin. While not a permanent or fast fix, cosmetic acupuncture offers a natural, painless and cost-effective means of improving and maintaining the skin. DERMAL ROLLING

Dermal Rolling

DO YOU WISH YOU COULD IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF YOUR SKIN, ERASING DAMAGE SUCH AS: • ACNE SCARS

• FINE LINES AND WRINKLES • PIGMENTATION FROM AGING AND SUN DAMAGE • LOSS OF FIRMNESS AND ELASTICITY • DULL SKIN TONE

Look Younger in 30 Minutes by Kathryn Bruno

Though the idea of rolling back the years and undoing damage to your skin might seem impossible, it is, in fact, easier than you ever imagined. For years, women and men have suffered from the uns ightly effects of aging, physiological changes and environmentally-caused skin damage. But such suffering isn’t necessary — there is a particularly effective option that many don’t even know exists.

Introducing Dermal Rolling

Dermal rolling is a relatively new innovation in esthetics. It is a fast, safe, cost-effective process that virtually erases fine lines and acne scars with no recovery time. Dermal rolling is your solution for rolling back the years, starting with 30-minute session.

What is Dermal Rolling? Dermal rolling is a procedure using a roller with hundreds of tiny, fine stainless steel needles. Rolling the tool over the skin produces tiny micro-channels, which allows active ingredients such as ampoules, vitamins, minerals and vital nutrients to more deeply penetrate the skin.

An Improvement You Can See A dermal rolling treatment can smooth wrinkles and fine lines, and improve the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. Those suffering from sun damage, loss of pigmentation and discoloration may see improvement, as well. Dermal rolling also stimulates the production of skin’s natural collagen and elastin, rejuvenating the skin for a plumper, firmer appearance.

Looking and feeling your best by maintaining the quality of your skin, is important to your psychological and emotional health.

26

|

ONNECTION.COM SEPTEMBER 2013

Today 80 percent of health care cost is for chronic illnesses.

Dermal Rolling is Painless and Safe Dermal rolling is virtually painless. The micro-channels produced by the roller tighten quickly, leaving your skin intact and otherwise undamaged, eliminating most side effects and risks associated with other procedures.

Dermal Rolling is Fast, Inexpensive and Effective Your skincare professional can complete a dermal rolling treatment in approximately 30 minutes. Best of all, your dermal rolling treatment can be used in combination with any of your preferred skin care treatments. Once the treatment is finished you can go about all of your regular activities for the day with no down time. Looking and feeling your best is important to your psychological and emotional health. With all the stresses inherent in today’s hectic lifestyle, you want to look and feel your best. Dermal rolling can help make this happen. Thanks to dermal rolling, many people now enjoy healthier, youngerlooking skin. Let it do the same for you — ask your skin care professional for a personalized analysis and the benefits that you might expect from this innovative and effective skincare treatment.

Fitness, Facials & Massage We have all heard the saying, “Beauty is only skin deep.” But nothing could be further from the truth. Our skin is a reflection of our health. You have seen the radiant, beautiful skin of a healthy infant or a child. His eyes sparkle and her skin is glowing. You also know the pale face of someone who is ill, the wrinkles and dry skin of someone who smokes or has a body filled with toxins and poor nutrition. You have seen the face of someone who is stressed, tired or depressed.

Skin Conditions Indicate Problems Your face is a reflection of the foods you eat and the lifestyle you chose. Skin conditions are a sign that something else in your body is out of balance, sick or toxic. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and is a great detoxifier. Every half inch of skin contains: • 500,000 cells. • 32 inches of blood vessels. • 1.8 feet of nerves. • 100 sweat glands. • 15 oil glands. • 230 sensory receptors. If you suffer from acne, rosacea, rashes or dark circles around your eyes, then inflammation and toxins are lurking inside of you. Rosacea is sensitive, reddish skin and is a common condition in fair-skinned people, affecting 16 million Americans.

Skin conditions are a sign of hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, infections, food allergies or gluten sensitivities. Recently a 35-year-old patient of mine had severe acne for 20 years. She had seen many dermatologists, used all the medications, multiple skin cleansers, facials and laser treatments but her acne persisted. I tested her blood for IgE and IgG food allergies and gluten sensitivity. She was positive for both. She removed the eggs, dairy and gluten from her diet and her acne has resolved.

Lose Weight, Maintain Health and Have Fun! • Certified Fitness/Weight Loss Instruction • Unique Exercise Classes — Zumba,® Bollywood®, Jumpsport® Fitness Trampoline & More • American Heart Association CPR, AED and First Aid Training

According to Dr. Alan Gaby in Nutritional Medicine, 2011, numerous investigators have reported that a hidden allergy or food sensitivity is a major contributing factor in some cases of acne. Eating foods you are sensitive to create an inflammatory response. The body naturally tries to detoxify in a variety of ways. As a result the skin will respond with acne, rashes, rosacea and aging wrinkles. Dark circles under your eyes are a classic sign of hidden food allergies. The average person eats 29 pounds of French fries, 23 pounds of pizza, 24 pounds of ice cream and consumes 53 gallons of soda, 24 pounds of artificial sweeteners, 2.736 pounds of salt and 90,700 milligrams of caffeine per year. Do we really think we can have health and beauty in such a toxic environment?

NATURAL APPROACH

Toxins in Our Products You may think your moisturizers, shampoo, hair spray, toothpaste, lip balm, tanning products, deodorant and makeup are harmless, but a look at the label often reveals a long list of chemical ingredients, many of which could be hazardous to your health. Companies that claim their products are all-natural should use ingredients that are easily recognizable as natural components— not a list of chemical names. You should only use personal skin care products you would eat. Every time you use these products, your skin absorbs them just as you would if you were eating them. Whatever we put on our skin enters the body through our pores and travels through the entire body via the blood vessels. Unfortunately, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the government cannot mandate safety studies of cosmetics. Therefore, only 11 percent of the 10,500 ingredients used in cosmetics and documented by the FDA have been assessed for safety by the Cosmetics Review Panel. The remaining 89 percent of ingredients are used in more than 99 percent of all products on the market. Here is a surprise. Many anti-aging products contain these harmful chemicals and actually contribute to aging the skin. Sunscreen is also very toxic. Only 17 percent of the sunscreens today are both safe and effective. Check out www.EWG.org to find the least toxic personal skin care products and cosmetics for your health and radiant beauty.

BEAUT Y FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Hair Loss and Problem Skin Many women experience hair loss. A normal cycle of hair growth is two to three years, growing about half an inch per month. Ninety percent of your hair is growing while 10 percent is resting. After about two to three months, the resting hair falls out. Approximately 30 million women have noticeable hair loss. Hair loss may be due to illness, medications and/or hormones. Hidden food allergies and gluten sensitivity are common root causes of hair loss. For healthy hair and skin good nutrition is essential. Vitamin A helps to secret sebum. Vitamin E increases circulation. Vitamin B keeps hairs firm on the scalp. If you have crackling, scaling skin you may be deficient in vitamin B3 (niacin). In addition to skin and hair, B3 is important for energy, digestion, the nervous system and the eyes and mouth. It helps to eliminate toxins and support the production of sex hormones. B3 is found in beets, brewer’s yeast, meat, poultry, fish, seeds and nuts. Do you have dry skin and hair, eczema or psoriasis? This can be due to low vitamin E. Vitamin E should consist of mixed tocopherols for best results. It’s important to eat an adequate amount of excellent quality fish oil, vitamin D, omega 3 and omega 6, olive and avocado oil, nuts and seeds for your brain, body and beauty. If you are healthy and eating well but still experiencing hair loss, you might have low stomach acid. Fifty percent of people 50 years or older and 85 percent of people older than 80 have low stomach acid. Obviously, 100 percent of individuals on antacids have low stomach acid. Stomach acid is important for two reasons: one to digest your food, and two to kill off the bacteria, viruses and parasites we eat on a daily basis. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you have low stomach acid, not only will nutrient deficiencies cause more problems with your skin and hair, but all the organs in your body will be affected. Sleep-deprived women show signs of premature skin aging and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure, U.S. researchers say. Primary investigator Dr. Elma Baron of the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland said skin functions as an important barrier to external stressors such as environmental toxins and sun-induced CONTINUED >> DNA damage.

“Our study is the first to conclusively demonstrate that inadequate sleep is correlated with reduced skin health and accelerates skin aging,” Baron said in a statement. “While chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to medical problems such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and immune deficiency, its effects on skin function have previously been unknown.” Will Rogers, an American cowboy and vaudeville performer once said, “Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me—I want people to know why I look this way. I have traveled a long way and some of the roads weren’t paved.” Most people other than Will Rogers want fewer wrinkles.

Wrinkles may result from age, sun, smoking, nutrient deficiencies, low stomach acid or toxic skin care products. Photoaging is skin damage resulting from too much exposure to the sun. Here is how to achieve radiant healthy skin and look your best: • Sleep. • Have your food allergies and gluten sensitivity tested. • Avoid toxic skin care products. • Remove toxins that are already in your body. • Eat a healthy diet. • Supplement with a multi-vitamin and fish oil. • Live a healthy lifestyle taking time for yourself. • Consider stem cell rejuvenation before choosing more aggressive, toxic options.

Personal & Professional Perspective Website http://www.sunderplasticsurgery.com www.facebook.com/facialsurgeon

Why did you choose this career path? Facial plastic surgery allows me to combine two of my life’s interests: medicine and aesthetics. Having studied art early in life, I’ve always appreciated the beauty of the things around me whether it was in nature, in art, or in fashion. Through fillers, lasers or surgery, my profession lets me help others rediscover the beauty in themselves. I love it when people leave my office looking and feeling great! What sets you apart from other physicians/specialists in your field? I think it’s my relationships with my patients. I’ve been fortunate to have trained with some of the pioneers in the field of facial plastic surgery, which gives my clientele confidence in my skills and abilities. But I like to believe that I’m also able to provide a caring, comfortable environment in which to discuss their desires and concerns. In addition, being a female facial plastic surgeon allows me a unique outlook from which to approach my patients’ concerns. I find that having a woman’s perspective enables me to deliver more natural looking results. What do you think the future holds for your practice? Facial plastic surgery is becoming more commonplace and accessible. New products and procedures are constantly expanding the horizons of what we can do. More and more, people are taking pre-emptive steps earlier rather than wait years for major surgery. For example, many of my patients are having mini-lifts at a younger age, so that they can maintain their current appearance and have very natural looking results.

MIND & SPIRIT 1

MALE FRIENDSHIPS

Women can teach us many things but they cannot teach us to be the best men we can be.

Friendships Between Men Can Make all the Difference by Wayne M. Levine

Men are in a great deal of pain. As a life coach and men’s group facilitator, I’ve seen the pain men experience in all of its myriad forms. Some men have unresolved childhood issues or have experienced trauma, others have abused substances, battled depression or have challenging relationships. Others are simply overwhelmed by the stress of providing for a family or trying to be a “good” man. I’ve come to discover that in all of these circumstances, men seldom ask for help, and turn, rather, to self-medication and other ways to avoid their issues. The problem is that the problems don’t go away. What gets repressed gets expressed, eventually, and usually in destructive ways. There are healthy ways, however, for men to deal with pain. Namely, by developing trusting relationships with other men. I’ve seen the obstacles men face in developing trusting relationships with men. These obstacles come in all shapes and sizes, but what they have in common is their power to keep men stuck … right where they are. The key to getting unstuck — to becoming a better man, father, husband and leader — is to find a way through these obstacles by opening up to and fully trusting the men in your circle.

36

|

ONNECTION.COM SEPTEMBER 2013

Why is developing these trusting relationships so important? Simply put, to become the best men we can be, we need to be in the company of other men. Many men feel far more comfortable in the company of women. That’s to be expected in our feminized culture. Most men from the last couple of generations were raised by women while their fathers were barely present. These boys didn’t receive their fair share of masculine modeling, guidance and nurturing. It stands to reason, then, that these men would feel more comfortable sharing their feelings, time and trust with women.

Work with a male counselor to discover your masculine power.

Women can teach us many things, but they cannot teach us to be the best men we can be. For that, we require other men — fathers and mentors — as we confront our doubts, fears and limitations as men, coupled with the challenges of long-term relationships, career choices, child rearing, mid-life, addictions, fidelity and mortality.

Be vulnerable and let someone you care about know that you want and need to be closer.

Men who have continued to rely on their female significant others as their sole source of guidance — their only sounding board — have seen their long-term relationships deteriorate. These men are asking too much of the women they love. Those who have chosen to deal with these challenges alone have, more often than not, found themselves on the losing end of their own counsel. But those of us who have been fortunate enough to have strong male relationships have received the guidance, buttkicking, love and mentoring needed to navigate the treacherous waters of our life. I’ve seen the most unhappy, isolated and despondent men rediscover with their emotional worlds, connect for the first time with other men and develop strong bonds that have served them as they’ve continued to make changes in their lives.

• Join a men’s group. • Start a men’s group. • Read books about male psychology and

get to know yourself.

Replace old girlfriends with new male friends.

• Risk looking like a fool. • Tell someone you’re sorry for having been

such an idiot.

Simply put, to become the best men we can be, we need to be in the company of other men.

• Be a man others look up to and trust.

We don’t live in society that honors relationships between men. In fact, our current culture doesn’t care too much about its males at all. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take care of yourself and develop trusting relationships with a few good men. Rather than feeling all alone when a relationship has hit a speed bump, a business transaction has turned bad, or a child has become impossibly defiant, you’ll have somewhere to turn, a man to call and an opportunity to get the help you need to turn things around, sometimes very quickly. Though it may sound a bit dramatic, this kind of support is literally life changing. You have a choice. Sit in your pain or reach out to the men for help. What choice are you going to make? Wayne M. Levine, M.A., is a men’s life coach and director of BetterMen Coaching in Agoura Hills, CA. He teaches men to be the best men, fathers, husbands and leaders they can be through individual, couples, and group coaching, both in office and via phone. Wayne is also author of the bestselling Hold On to Your N.U.T.s—The Relationship Manual for Men. Find out more, get a copy of Wayne’s book, and register for the Sept 27-29 BetterMen Weekend Retreat tterMenCoaching.com.

These courageous men have revealed themselves to other men and invited them into their lives. They’ve learned to ask for help to become better fathers and husbands. They’ve owned up to their own fears and doubt, making it safe for others to do the same. And as they’ve come to know each other and help each other, the distance between them has diminished.

Change Your Life How can you begin to develop trusting relationships with other men? Here are few suggestions to start with:

• Tell the truth to your friend. • Ask your brother for help. • Thank your dad for doing his best. • Invite friends over for a good talk, rather

than too many beers.

INTIMACY

Do you suspect your husband is hiring hookers or phoning call girls? This man may be any woman’s husband who has lost a connection with his wife. He may still be having sex with his wife, but has lost the intimacy, love, understanding and care. He is lonely, but does not even realize it; this call girl on the other line makes him feel better about himself. She listens to him, compliments him and makes him feel like a man with her intimate words and sexy, sweet voice. In this day and age, marriage often becomes the last relationship that couples work at and it slowly erodes over the years. The couple has children, jobs, responsibilities, bills and seemingly no time for the marriage itself.

Lack of Intimacy

Can have Major Consequences by Dawn Michael

He picks up the phone, gives his credit card information and begins to talk to her. His intentions are to get a quick release and then go about his business. As he begins to talk to her, she becomes more interesting. Her words are not just sexual — she makes him feel connected. The phone calls then become more regular and lengthy; some calls don’t even involve him having a sexual release. He finds himself connecting with her, maybe even wanting to see her.

38

|

ONNECTION.COM SEPTEMBER 2013

Women have the advantage over men when it comes to connections in their lives — they have other women to talk to, hug, cry with and laugh with. Men, on the other hand, often don’t have those same connections with other men. Often times, their wives are, in fact, the only people they feel comfortable sharing their emotions with. When a husband loses his connection with his wife, he begins to feel alone and seeks out the emotional intimacy through sexual encounters. Many times these encounters are really about a husband needing intimacy — intimacy that he no longer knows how to achieve this with his wife. If you are a man and can relate, take the time to work on your marriage. Set up a date night with your wife. If you are a wife and feel your husband slipping away, do something about it — take the initiative. It does not take much to schedule time in your calendar for each other every week, but it will take everything if these issues progress to the point where your husband seeks sexual intimacy with a stranger. BEYOND GREEN LIVING

THE INNER BEAUTY OF LETTING GO

Beauty is Not Skin Deep— It Comes Straight from our Core

The Inner Beauty by Jan Tucker

There really is a time and a place for everything. If we could only live by this wisdom—immerse ourselves in it— the world would be a far better place—our lives would flow. Instead, we try to control too many things for the wrong reasons and in the process we make many mistakes. Instead of asking for help from beyond, we try to use our limited human capabilities and we get ourselves in trouble at every turn—from large scale oil spills to bad politics to minor accidents. It’s no accident this happens. We’re often going against the natural flow of life. We forget that everything is connected.

How Our Life’s Purpose Fits In One great example of the wisdom of letting go involves our life’s purpose. As human beings, each one of us at one time or another questions our purpose. Are we doing what we are meant to do? Are we fulfilling this purpose? How can we know? Should we be trying harder? Should we choose a totally different direction? What is the meaning of it all? What can we do to feel fulfilled? During a particularly trying time in my life all these questions surfaced at once. I felt strongly compelled to know the answers and I was afraid

of Letting Go of choosing the wrong path. I was interested in so many things and had no idea which was the right direction for me. In my search at that time, I was fortunate to find a book that totally satisfied me and allowed me to lay my fears to rest. I never worried about my direction again, but instead relied on my inner intuition to guide the way. It was a letting go—a surrender to the universe. Instead of grasping for answers, I found I could allow myself to follow the flow instead. The book I found, by Mark Thurston, is Soul Purpose: Discovering and Fulfilling Your Destiny. In it, Thurston revealed his study of Edgar Cayce’s work with many individuals who were searching for their life’s purpose. Edgar Cayce, a prominent clairvoyant, discovered through thousands of individuals who came to him for answers that whether people realized it or not, no matter how far off they felt they were, they were actually on the right road to serving their life purpose. It is a phenomenon of nature.

Try an Inner Approach If you feel confused about your purpose or if you need help with any other issue, instead of seeking answers outside of yourself, try stepping back. If you believe in prayer, pray for an answer. Or let the universe know you feel the need for guidance on a specific question or with a particular problem. With either method, describe your situation in detail. State how you feel. Ask for assistance and explain that you have faith the answer will come to you because you are willing to let go. If you can truly trust the natural flow rather than putting your own desires and ideas forth first, asking for help to make everything revolve around satisfying your perceived needs, there is a good chance solutions will be revealed to you that you never thought of. Tell your anxious mind to have some patience waiting for the right directions to surface—that you will receive answers if you give yourself some space and silent time. Meditate every day—again, not grasping for answers CONTINUED >>

THE INNER BEAUTY OF LETTING GO

but waiting for—allowing—an inspiration to come. This is the way of surrender. Surrender does not mean resigning yourself to acting in a way that is unfulfilling to you or that puts your needs last. It is a letting go that you do with faith, trusting that if you tap into your inner intuition, you will find ways to solve any problem—ways that are in line with your growth and that contribute to the betterment of others as well.

How Will You Know What to Do? Your answers may or may not come while you are meditating. Your direction may arrive while you are busy living your life. In fact, surrendering doesn’t mean putting a halt to your normal life activities. Now that you are open to guidance and have requested it, it is best to take whatever action you believe to be a good place to start. Then as you progress, keep your eyes and ears open to what comes your way. One thing will lead to another and you will find the pieces falling together to form a pattern that reveals what you should do next. Opportunities arise. Take hold of each one that resonates with you and incorporate it into your actions. See what happens. Reflect on the process. Continue to ask for more guidance when you need it. Watch the world open up to assist you. The process can seem like magic when it all clicks. It doesn’t mean everything will be effortless, and it doesn’t mean you won’t have roadblocks. Effort on your part is also a good thing that leads to more growth. But the more you rely on this process, the easier it will be to find answers and develop your faith in the process.

A Helpful Analogy Think of a flower. Every flower begins its life from a seed (just like we do). With the proper sun, water and nutrients, it pops its head up from beneath the ground to develop further. It has no idea what it is going to be—it just takes one step at a time, growing cell by cell, going with the flow. Soon a bud forms. Stretching out to reach the sun, the bud opens wide to reveal a glorious display of color. The flower is fulfilling its purpose. It serves as a source of honey for the bees, it releases oxygen into the air and it exudes its natural beauty, contributing to nature in many ways. The flower wasn’t given the same level of intelligence we humans have—it simply grows as it is meant to do, and doesn’t get in its own way. We can learn a lot from the flower. We have the ability to unfold in the same

way. It’s part of the universe’s plan. All we need to remember is to not let our mind take us in the wrong direction by making bad choices due to external input—not to let our egos get in the way. Ask for help, open up to the guidance you will receive—develop your instincts and intuition in this way. Surrender is in harmony with nature. Letting go reveals an inner beauty that we all possess, if only we take the time and have the patience to tap into it.

The Flower wasn’t given the same level of intelligence we humans have—it simply grows as it is meant to do, and doesn’t get in it’s own way.

A Vision for Vis Dr. Paul Dougherty, a refractive and corneal specialist, is among the world’s most experienced and respected vision correction surgeons.

For more than 20 years, Dougherty has been working as a top ophthalmologist specializing in vision correction, long before Lasik was a household name. He has performed “well over 30,000 surgeries” and graduated first in his class from UCLA Medical School. His award-winning research and a residency at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute led to a fellowship at the prestigious Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, where Dougherty spent a year training with Richard Lindstrom — a pioneer of Lasik. “I specialize in Lasik and refractive cataract surgery. I limit my practice to vision correction,” Dougherty said. “I believe in (Lasik) technology – I had it done myself in January of 1997 (before it was FDAapproved). I was the first ophthalmologist in the United States to have Lasik on my own eyes; it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself.”

Dougherty’s vast education and experience have enabled him not only to thrive as an expert practitioner, but also to work as a prolific educator. He teaches courses around the world that focus on the latest aspects of vision correction techniques and technology. Another thing that sets him apart is his fusion of Lasik and cataract technology, as he uses both treatments to customize his procedure to ensure the best outcome. In addition to teaching about vision correction technology, he works to create cutting-edge procedures. “I’ve been involved in developing the following technologies: topography-guided Lasik (FDA approval pending) which helps people who have issues with other lasers; the implantable contact lens that’s replacing Lasik – in fact, I’m the leading implanter in the U.S. of that technology; and intraocular lenses,” Dougherty said. Dougherty also sits on editorial boards,

sion gives lectures all over the world, writes articles and has routinely appeared on national media, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Doctors on CBS, ABC’s Nightline, CBS’ Early Show and TLC’s 10 Years Younger. He also makes regular appearances on the Bob MacCormick Show on KFWB Talk 980. Dougherty explains that the biggest challenge he faces is the “misinformation that patients have before they come in.” “A lot of people have been told by other doctors that they’re not (surgery) candidates, because many doctors don’t offer the full range of services for vision correction. They only offer Lasik,” Dougherty explained. This confusion is part of the reason that Dougherty wrote his book, See For Yourself: The Eye-Opening Guide to Permanent Vision Correction, wherein he educates people on their choices

when it comes to corrective surgery. “Lasik is not all there is,” he explained. “Lens implants sometimes are better for patients and ... surgeries are safer than contact lenses. Statistically, you take five times the risk of serious loss of vision with a contact lens compared to vision procedures. I’ve had to remove eyes for contact lens-related infections. I’ve never lost an eye from Lasik.” When Dougherty looks ahead to the future, he said he wants to “continue to maintain our reputation as the premier vision correction center in Ventura County and Southern California.” Dougherty’s vision goes beyond his practice, however. He is committed to giving the gift of sight to those who are in dire need. “I work hard in my surgery centers to support my foundation — The Andrew Dougherty Vision Foundation — which

honors my son’s memory,” Dougherty said. “We give to the homeless, the wounded veterans and impoverished people around the world.” In addition to other locations (Camarillo and Los Angeles), Dougherty Laser Vision is celebrating their new location in Westlake Village. Our community is fortunate to have one of the best eye surgeons in the world right here in Westlake Village. His extensive technical and medical background along with his passion for helping others enable him to provide the quality of service that he offers. It’s no wonder that Dougherty is known as “the doctors’ doctor.” For more information on Dougherty’s practices, visit www.doughertylaservision.com. COMPASSIONATE EATING

SUMMER SOUP

So-Cal Summer Soup by Bianca Rose Martinez

This soup is perfect for warm summer evenings. It calls for cooling cucumber and avocado to create a deliciously smooth, creamy texture. I like to use a lot of cilantro in my recipes because it is a powerful herb that is good for cleansing heavy metals out of the body. Using organic ingredients whenever possible helps reduce harmful chemicals in our air, soil, water, and our bodies. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS 1 large English cucumber roughly chopped 1 avocado cubed handful chopped basil handful chopped cilantro 1-2 tbsp. miso paste (or coconut aminos for soy-free, raw) Âź cup chopped onion 1tbsp. coconut oil 1 cup water or broth DIRECTIONS

Using organic ingredients whenever possible helps reduce harmful chemicals in our air, soil, water, and our bodies.

1. Sautee onion in oil for 5 min or until tender. 2. Place cucumber, avocado, basil, cilantro, onion, liquid and miso in a blender and puree until smooth. 3. Chill before serving. I just put the blender pitcher in the fridge and pulse just before serving. For a raw version, omit sauteed onion and oil. You can also add more water or broth to thin as needed and more or less miso or aminos to taste. Garnish with chives, or any fresh herb of your choice, and coconut milk (optional). Bianca Rose Martinez is an artist, public speaker and author of the book, Compassionate Eating Conscious Consumption for Mind, Body Spirit & Planet. She also teaches organic vegan cooking classes in Ventura. For free recipes, class schedule and other services please visit www.compassionateating.com
