PUBLISHER’S LETTER

THE GODDESS WITHIN

THE GODDESS WITHIN Beauty, grace, wisdom, mystery, power and gentleness are a few qualities that define women. Our bodies are made to move gracefully within a delicate, yet resilient frame, and our reproductive system is so incredibly complex that modern medicine is still unraveling its mysteries. Many ancient cultures view the different phases of a woman’s life with respect and honor—from coming of age to motherhood and finally to menopause.

ANN K. CASTLE FOUNDER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & PUBLISHER

For a woman to complete the cycle of fertility places her socially and spiritually as a woman of experience and wisdom. She is revered for her level of experience and knowledge of womanhood that establishes her role as a wise elder and counselor—also known as the crone. Hence, the goddess within this woman emerges to fulfillment. The word goddess carries a plethora of images from the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis, scepter in hand and wings wrapped around her perfect body, to the voluptuous Marilyn Monroe—Hollywood icon, always camera-ready. In reality, the true goddess is within all women, in all walks of life. It represents the divine essence and pure spirit in which we were created. It is the integral part of who we are—the loving, nurturing gender. In this issue, we present Maria Durant of Dance for Wellness in Thousand Oaks to teach you how to express your goddess-self on the dance floor; and Dr. Steven Greenman of Westlake Village who will give you not only a dazzling smile, but address sleep apnea so you can get your beauty rest. We also address a common issue plaguing women—heart palpitations; an important update on Botox and demystifying the confusion behind what kind of vitamins to take. It is my deepest wish to see our modern culture learn and embrace certain practices and beliefs from history and other cultures—to bring in a tribal structure where all generations are given the opportunity to share their life experiences in order to develop a nurturing environment, where the woman, the wise elder, the crone is honored for expressing her inner-goddess. It is why we are here. To the many beautiful spirits who embrace this publication—Namaste—which means the divine in me honors the divine in you. With Peace, Love, Blessings and Gratitude,

Ann

A member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and the American Academy of Micropigmentation, she prides herself on state-ofthe-art techniques, color artistry and sound judgment. “Permanent makeup is a nonsurgical microprocedure known as micropigmentation,” Ruth Swissa explained. “Tiny droplets of custom-blended colors are skillfully deposited into the dermal layer of skin to simulate natural-looking or well-defined makeup.” This process is a selective art form of traditional tattooing whereby the natural features of the face are enhanced and defined in the form of permanent eyebrows, eyeliner and or lip liner and color. “The results are beautiful, immediate and permanent!” she said. With locations in Agoura Hills and Beverly Hills, Ruth Swissa’s services include eyebrows, eyeliner, lips, scar camouflage and cosmetic hair follicle replication. Ruth Swissa

“Additionally, I derive great satisfaction from a job well done,” said Greenman, DDS. The founder of Greenman Smile Concepts in Westlake Village, he is particularly passionate about improving health through better sleep. “Sleep apnea affects up to 25 percent of the population, but only 3 percent of sufferers are diagnosed,” Dr. Greenman explained. “Of those, more than half are not being treated. We see the effects of sleep deprivation all the time.” For instance, nearly 30 percent of all fatal traffic accidents involve sleep deprivation, most commonly, sleep apnea. “We care enough to offer and provide ideal dental care,” Dr. Greenman said. “We are, and pledge to continue to be industry leaders in the range of services and technologies we have. to offer.”

GREENMAN SMILE CONCEPTS The staff at Greenman Smile Concepts is known for taking the time to listen to each individual’s needs, concerns and desires in order to gain a complete understanding of what each person wants to achieve. “We pledge to provide an environment where your safety, comfort and well-being come first.” Greenman earned his dental degree in 1981 from UCLA School of Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic

Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. “I have received extensive training in advanced cosmetic, reconstructive, implant, and sedation dentistry,” explained Dr. Greenman, who also has a subspecialty in dental sleep medicine, specifically CPAP-alternative therapy for snoring and sleep apnea. Three full-time staff members include Cara Hedlund, RDH, a periodontal therapist, and treatment coordinators Bethany Huter, RDA and Lisa Battaglia, RDA. “Combined they have more than 40 years’ experience,” Dr. Greenman said. “They are truly the ‘A team’.” His practice provides advanced cosmetic and implant-focused dental care using a unique method Greenman developed and trademarked, as well as offering ITERO digital impressions. “This means no more unpleasant goop in your mouth or gagging, as well as same day dental restorations using CEREC CAD/CAM technology,” he explained. Additional services include same day dental restorations using CEREC CAD/CAM technology, laser-assisted dentistry, conscious sedation/ sleep dentistry and treatment for sleep breathing disorders with PPO and Medicare billing service. “I offer sedation services so you can have all of your dental care in only a couple of visits with little or no memory of the process,” he explained.

SLEEP APNEA People affected by sleep apnea may experience fatigue, anxiety from snoring, interrupted sleep, or CPAP intolerance. “I offer life-saving, life-changing help for snoring and sleep apnea sufferers,” Dr. Greenman said. “If you want a dentist who really listens and does his best to give you what you want, call me.” “First and foremost, it’s important to truly understand the medical risks associated with untreated sleep-disordered breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnea,” Dr. Greenman further emphasized. “Of those who snore, one in seven experience significant obstructive sleep apnea,” he noted. “Obstructive sleep apnea means you stop breathing, sometimes for more than two minutes, and in severe cases over 100 times per hour.” He further explained that the level of oxygen carried in the bloodstream falls to dangerously low levels with a correspondingly dangerous increase in carbon dioxide. “Your sleep is disrupted, and in order to compensate, harmful changes take place in your blood vessels, organs and brain,” he said. “It is vital for people to be warned of the severity of the problem.”

CLIENTELE Patients at Greenman Smile Concepts are looking for a range of services, expertise, technology and personal service and care that go way beyond the typical dental office.

“We help fearful/phobic people by offering safe, effective, conscious sedation services,” said Dr. Greenman, who is one of the few dentists in California who have completed the more than 100 hours of required training and passed the test and in-office inspection to pass the permit process. Greenman also serves those who want an alternative to CPAP. “I help people who want dental implants and restorative service all in the same location rather than traveling to multiple offices and seeing multiple dentists,” Dr. Greenman said.

A V O C AT I O N IS BORN Born in Los Angeles, Greenman graduated from Birmingham High School in 1973, and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of California San Diego in 1977. “I was inspired to go into this field by my family dentist, Charlie Goldstein, who founded the USC Mobile Dental Clinics,” Dr. Greenman said. As far as his future is concerned, “I’m looking forward to attending this year’s American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine meeting in June,” he said. Greenman Smile Concepts is located in the Westshore Plaza Medical Complex at 1240 S. Westlake Boulevard, Suite 223, in Westlake Village. DANCE 4 WELLNESS

MARIA DURANT

A DANCER SINCE SHE WAS 7 YEARS OLD, WITH FORMAL TRAINING IN BALLET, TAP, JAZZ, BALLROOM, SWING AND SALSA, MARIA DURANT REMEMBERS WHEN HER PARENTS STRUGGLED TO PAY HER DANCE TUITION INSTEAD OF BUYING A HOME. “They knew I loved it so much, they saved up every penny so I would be happy,” said Durant, 32, of Westlake Village. “And I have been happy dancing for the last 25 years.” Today, Durant cannot imagine her life—or any life—without music and dance. “When I started teaching ballroom dance 12 years ago, I met a 90-yearold couple out dancing one night,” she recalled. “I asked them, ‘What is

the secret to happiness?’, as they were celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.” The couple told Durant they still hold hands and dance every night. “I am grateful each and every day that we get to bring the joy and hope that dance brings to people who may have otherwise never known it,” Durant said.

DANCE 4 WELLNESS Dance 4 Wellness, established by Durant in 2008, is a social and ballroom dance studio specializing in enhancing an individual’s overall wellness through music and dance, thereby boosting emotional and physical wellness. “Whether your goal is to feel as confident as Fred Astaire at the next dinner dance or wedding reception, tra vel the world on our exciting dance cruises, learn the passionate tango and reconnect with that special someone, or salsa your way into a nightclub, our professional instructors make learning to dance fun and easy,” said Durant, founder and CEO of Dance 4 Wellness. Located at 2360 Townsgate Road in Westlake Village, the studio offers private and group lessons in all styles of ballroom and Latin dancing, as well as salsa, swing, all-around social and Argentine Tango. “According to the American Heart Association and AARP, dancing is one of the top 10 things you can do to

help prevent heart disease, especially among baby boomers,” said Durant, who graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a bachelors in psychology and a bachelors in Spanish literature.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Durant is also passionate about community outreach programs, and for the last four years she has brought dance to children, aged 8 to 14, as well as those afflicted with cancer. Durant explained that through the nonprofit program, Dancing with Our Local Schools, “we have taught over 3,000 forth through eighth grade students in over 15 schools within the Conejo Valley how to ballroom dance at no cost to parents and schools.” Dancing with Our Local Schools is a 12-week ballroom dance program that takes place during physical education for most schools. This effort was made possible through a generous grant from Mrs. Marylin Fordney of the Fordney Foundation, located in Agoura Hills. “Our mission is to give our children an outlet and opportunity to learn how to express emotions in a positive way,” Durant said. “Ballroom dance helps youths improve their sense of body

FREE NEWCOMERS’ CLASS “Students at Dance 4 Wellness love to socialize, and many enjoy the studio for the friendly atmosphere and variety of dances offered,” Durant said. “You do not need to be a member to join us,” said Durant, further noting the studio offers a free Newcomers’ Class every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. followed by a weekly drop-in dance party as well as classes and other events most nights of the week. Designed for singles and couples, the studio is home to ages 9 to 99, with most adult students in their 40s through 70s. Students are mostly local, from areas including Calabasas, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Camarillo and Simi Valley. “Join us on our next Caribbean Dance Cruise or if you have dreamed of Dancing with the Stars, join us at our next dance competition with one of our current dance champions,” Durant said. “You can even find us out salsa dancing with our instructors and students.”

our studio this past month inside Elite Fitness Plus, a 15,000-squarefoot private wellness and fitness center,” Durant said of the site at 2360 Townsgate Road in Westlake Village, located one block away from the Chamber of Commerce. “We now have an almost 2,000-square-foot studio with gorgeous views, wall-to-wall mirrors, and brand new floating hardwood floors,” Durant said.

CONNECTION At Dance 4 Wellness, our mission is very simple: “To bring dance and music as a vehicle to enhance our emotional and physical wellness and connect to others in a positive way,” Durant said. “If you ask any ballroom dancer why they dance, they will simply say it makes them happy,” she emphasized. “How can anyone not be happy listening to music that brings back good memories, or feeling the adrenaline pump through your veins as you move to the rhythm and energy of the music, regardless of whether you are a new dancer or an accomplished competitor? The feeling is the same.” Ultimately, “I hope to inspire people that would have otherwise never tried to learn how to dance, to experience our approach to dance and to inspire children to follow passionately what they love to do,” Durant said. PALPITATIONS

by Dr. Alon Steinberg

PALPITATIONS

SPECIAL HEALTH BULLETIN

18

|

PALPITATIONS ARE AMONG THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT LEAD WOMEN TO CONSULT THEIR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. PALPITATIONS ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN 15 PERCENT OF SYMPTOMS PROMPTING PATIENTS TO GO TO THEIR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS, AND ARE SECOND ONLY TO CHEST PAIN WHEN VISITING A CARDIOLOGIST.

CTW MAGAZINE MAY 2014

A palpitation is an awareness of the heartbeat, and is described by patients as a sensation of pulsation or movement in the chest. People often perceive this irregularity to be associated with a cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm). During normal rest, we are not aware of our heartbeat. During or after intense physical activity or emotional stress we can be aware of our own heart beat for a brief period. This is a normal response of the heart as these activities lead to an increase in frequency and strength of beat of our heart. Outside of these situations, palpitations are looked upon as being abnormal.

THREE MAIN CAUSES OF PA L P I TAT I O N S The first cause is, the heart is just beating normally, but a person is conscious of it. The second is from early beats or ectopy. Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are early beats from the top chambers of the heart and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are early beats from the bottom chambers of the heart. These early beats cause the heart to contract before it is ready and before it completely fills with blood. At times these beats are not efficient. The beat following the premature beat takes a little extra time to fill with extra blood, and contracts harder. People can feel this beat and the irregularity. People feel these beats particularly during quiet times at rest. PACs and PVCs are extremely common and

mostly benign. I cannot remember reading a 24-hour monitor without seeing at least a few of these beats in every patient of every age. PACs and PVCs are usually described as a skip or a short flutter in the chest. Sometimes when PACs and PVCs are more frequent, the fluttering may be more prolonged. The third cause of palpitations is an arrhythmia, which essentially means any heart rhythm that is not normal. These include a burst of PACs in a row or atrial tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and a burst of PVCs or ventricular tachycardia. These are usually described as more prolonged skips and flutters in the chest. Sometimes they are associated with other symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Some people can feel their heartbeat, PACs, PVCs and arrhythmias but some don’t. It is not known why this is true. It has to do with the brain filtering stimuli from the heart to the brain.

HOW DO WE D I F F E R E N T I AT E BETWEEN THE CAUSES? Determining the cause of your palpitations requires a careful history, exam and electrocardiogram by your health care provider. If your symptoms are daily or frequent, your doctor can order a heart monitor for either 24 or 48 hours. A more prolonged monitor can be ordered if symptoms are infrequent but there is concern about a possible arrhythmia. MAY 2014 CTWMAG.COM

SPECIAL HEALTH BULLETIN

PALPITATIONS

Rarely do cardiologists need to implant a monitor underneath the skin for very infrequent but concerning symptoms. Actual structural abnormalities in your heart may cause early beats and arrhythmias. Your physician may order an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to better assess the muscle and valves of your heart. A common cause of palpitations for women is hormonal—involving estrogen and progesterone changes— especially in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Palpitations in this case are mostly benign and just require reassurance. Another common cause of palpitations is anxiety and depression. This can induce the perception of feeling the heartbeat even though it is normal.

Stress (trouble with spouse, child or job), even though subconscious, can cause palpitations. Lack of sleep, smoking, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, drugs with stimulants (weight loss medications, decongestants, sleeping aids) and inhalers can also stress your body and cause palpitations.

tions often are brief and intermittent, and they resolve. Some people will continue to suffer recurrences of palpitations, which may impair quality of life and mental balance.

Thyroid imbalance problems and anemia (low blood count) can contribute to stress on your body and cause palpitations.

Treatment for palpitations really depends on finding the underlying cause. The basics of treatment is getting regular and appropriate sleep, decreasing stress and eliminating or reducing caffeine. Deep breathing and yoga can also help.

Low electrolytes of potassium and magnesium may cause palpitations, early beats and arrhythmias. Thyroid, blood count and electrolytes can be checked with a simple blood test. Sleep apnea is a cause of early beats and arrhythmias. In many cases the exact cause of palpitations is not found. These palpita-

Underlying causes such as thyroid, hormone or electrolyte imbalances can be corrected. Sleep apnea and heart conditions can also be treated. Medications are at times prescribed for palpitations; the most common are beta-blockers and certain calcium

channel blockers. To relieve symptoms, these medications slow down the heart rate and decrease how hard the heart contracts. These drugs are used to treat all three causes of palpitations. If an arrhythmia is the cause, at times stronger medications, called antiarrhythmic, are needed. Some arrhythmias are best treated with a procedure called an ablation. A heart specialist—an electrophysiologist—will thread a small wire into the heart through a vein in the leg. This wire will find the cause and area of the arrhythmia, which can be treated and often cured with cauterization. Though palpitations can signal a serious condition such as an arrhythmia, most often they result from the normal heart beating or benign ectopy (PACs and PVCs). Confirming that nothing is wrong and getting reassurance from your doctor is often all a person needs.

BOTOX

WOMEN AND MEN ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE TURNING TO BOTOX INJECTIONS TO HELP THEM LOOK AND

FEEL BETTER.

THE MANY FACES OF

BOTOX by Dr. Sid Solomon

CTW MAGAZINE MAY 2014

W H AT I S B O T O X ? Botox is derived from a type of bacteria (Clostridium botulinum) known to produce a protein (known as botulinum toxin) that acts as a neuromuscular inhibitor in humans. In other words, Botox is a substance that, in small doses, can prevent the movement of the bodily muscles it is injected into. The steps are very simple: 1. Botox is injected into the muscle. 2. The active ingredient in Botox blocks the signals sent from the nerve ending to the muscles. 3. This block prevents muscle fibers from contracting. Botox treatment generally takes only minutes, is non-invasive, and requires no downtime at all. Once injected, it requires four to six days for the results to be visible. Depending on the patient, Botox results can last from three to four months.

COSMETIC USES Just a few years after FDA approval in April, 2002, Botox became one of the most commonly requested nonsurgical procedures. Botox is commonly used for skin rejuvenation and wrinkle correction. When properly injected, Botox can make certain facial lines disappear, rendering a more youthful appearance for patients. As human beings, we naturally exaggerate our facial muscles numerous times throughout the day. For example, we stress the muscles controlling our forehead when we’re surprised, the muscles between our eyebrows when we’re in the sun or when we frown. Over time, repeated use of these muscles leads to lines and wrinkles which become more visible as we age. Botox can remove these lines, helping a patient shed years from their face. There is nothing wrong with aging gracefully and having a few wrinkles and folds here and there to show for it. But when you have that urge for a more youthful appearance, Botox, if applied properly and

in moderation, can render subtle, yet remarkable results. Common aging issues Botox addresses: • Frown lines (glabellar lines between the eyebrows). • Crow’s feet around the eyes (lateral canthal wrinkles) . • Forehead lines. • Neck wrinkles. • Upper-lip lines and wrinkles. • Chin dimples. • Enlarged masseter muscle (chewing muscle—moves the lower jaw). • Uneven facial anatomy.

THERAPEUTIC USES Most people think of Botox for wrinkles; few are aware of its therapeutic uses. Botulinum toxin A (Botox) was first used to treat involuntary muscle tension and spasms. Over the years, the medical community realized Botox can often improve many disorders and systemic problems. While Botox can help treat multiple issues, as a neuromuscular dentist I have been privileged to use Botox to relieve various face, head and neck issues. It may seem odd to want to consciously prevent a muscle in our body from working, but many bodily issues cause muscles to be overactive. Botox is a magnificent therapeutic agent to help relax those muscles.

GRINDING TEETH AT N I G H T Botox is promising in assisting patients with mild to severe bruxism—one of the most common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD), a condition characterized by clenching or grinding the teeth unconsciously. Bruxism disrupts sleep and results in worn teeth, recession and even tooth chipping or cracking. Grinding and grinding at night also causes pain in the facial and jaw joint. Properly injected, Botox weakens the masticatory muscles just enough to reduce grinding, while allowing the patient to chew, talk and smile normally. While a custom neuromuscular

orthosis or night guard are the best long-term methods to treat TMJ and bruxism, Botox is a great short-term treatment option.

MIGRAINES AND MORE In 2010, the FDA approved Botox to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. Headaches and migraines greatly affect every aspect of a person’s life: social, physical, emotional and mental. Botox is an effective treatment option in certain headache and migraine cases. When injected at the labeled doses in recommended areas (such as the temporalis muscles), Botox is expected to produce results lasting up to three months—depending on the individual. The list of issues Botox addresses is long, but here are some main head, face and neck conditions Botox can treat: • Chronic migraines. • TMJ disorder. • Blepharospasm (eyelid spasms). • Muscle hypertrophy (enlarged, overactive muscles). • Strabismus (crossed eyes). • Involuntary hemifacial spasms (of the face). • Allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy). • Spasmodic torticollis (painful, involuntary neck movement). Since I incorporated Botox injections in my dental practice, I am continuously amazed by the cosmetic and therapeutic results Botox injections have provided to my family of patients. While not a long-term solution, if properly injected by the right doctor, Botox can provide incredible results. Dr. Sid Solomon is a cosmetic and neuromuscular dentist with 27 years of experience. He practices in three locations and is the author of “Dream Big, Smile Big.” He invented Unitox, the first and only FDAapproved specialty syringe for use with Botox. Unitox syringes ensure accuracy and precision in every injection. They are the only syringe marked in Botox units. To learn more, visit www.timetosmile.com. MAY 2014 CTWMAG.COM

VITAMINS

VITAMINS

Are They Just a Waste of Money? by Dr. Sharon Norling

DO YOU OFTEN WONDER WHAT VITAMINS YOU SHOULD TAKE? ARE YOU TAKING TOO MANY OR NOT ENOUGH? ARE YOU WONDERING WHICH VITAMINS AND MINERALS YOU NEED?

24

|

CTW MAGAZINE MAY 2014

Are you experiencing hair loss, chipped nails, dark circles under your eyes, swelling finger joints, acne or psoriasis? Do you notice swelling of your lower legs, bumps on the back of your upper arms, loss of hair on your arms or rosacea? If so, you have multiple nutrient deficiencies. But which vitamins, minerals or amino acids are low?

It is very important to get a Cyrex test to determine if you have a gluten sensitivity. Cyrex is the only lab that gets it right. Undiagnosed gluten sensitivity can be life threatening. The answer to which vitamins you need can be identified by specific lab tests. As a country we are nutrientdeficient—so why not get tested?

Get Tested!

The Advantage of Liquid Nutrients

Specialty tests can determine your specific vitamin and mineral imbalances. Requesting tests is a better approach than going to a drug store or health food store, searching through the myriad selections on shelf after shelf and just picking a few nutrients that may or may not help.

To protect your health and help your body heal, consider using intravenous (IV) nutrient therapies. When nutrients are given intravenously, a higher dose of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and lipids can enter the blood stream where they are distributed throughout the body.

Some doctors believe we get all the nutrition our bodies need by just eating a well-balanced diet. But most of us don’t eat well-balanced foods three times a day—certainly none of us eat perfectly.

IV therapy provides 100 percent nutrient absorption and the body heals faster.

At the same time, the quality of our food has changed dramatically over time. The soil is depleted, and fruits and vegetables are picked when they’re green, ripening in the back of a truck or in the store.

Select a Quality Source

Add to this, the plethora of GMO foods, processed, prepared and frozen foods. Any edible item that comes in a box, can, package or bag is often not even real food. Perhaps you are suffering from indigestion, heartburn, or irritable bowel syndrome. You may not be able to properly digest or absorb even the good food you are eating. Do you have inflammation? If so, what is causing it? Get tested to find the root cause of your gastrointestinal issues. Specialty tests can identify a hidden food sensitivity. Your favorite food could even be the culprit, but because your reaction is delayed it is difficult to identify unless you use a specific laboratory blood test.

Liquid vitamins in a bottle are also often better absorbed.

A very important point is to know the quality of the vitamins you are taking. You wouldn’t intentionally put sand in your gas tank, but some pumps aren’t clean. Today vitamin and supplement companies are popping up all over. Forty to 50 percent of the vitamins you buy over the counter or over the Internet may contain contaminants and 40 to 50 percent of the time they do not contain what the label indicates. Make sure the vitamins you are taking are GMP-certified or pharmaceutical grade.

Some Deficiencies (and Solutions) Identified If you are a younger woman with hair loss there is a good chance you may have low stomach acid. In most cases, incomplete protein digestion with subnormal stomach acid results in low levels of amino acids and essential minerals. People with low MAY 2014 CTWMAG.COM

stomach acid may experience belching or bloating after eating.

(Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, December 2013).

In this situation, supplementation with hydrochloric acid and pepsin capsules can correct your low stomach acid and result in better digestion.

Low B6 increases risk of depression.

If you are a post menopausal woman with hair loss you may also have this digestive issue. Fifty percent of people beginning at age 50 and 85 percent of those over 80 have low stomach acid. This may be why we see the older population getting thinner, shorter and more frail. They are nutrient-deprived. If you are a middle-aged woman and have much less hair on your arms and legs than you once did, have your DHEA checked. Replacing DHEA to the normal level is a good idea, not only for your hair, but to enhance your immune system and decrease the risk of cancer. Thinning hair can be caused by low DHEA, thyroid dysfunction, lack of B vitamins or hormonal imbalances. If it is painful when you brush your hair, you probably need more vitamin D. Have your vitamin D checked and your doctor will recommend how much you need. Low levels of vitamin D can cause increased risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome and depression.

Studies Reveal Helpful Information A variety of studies might shed light on some of the problems you are having. But consulting with your doctor can help rule out other causes and find the cures. The mechanism behind vitamin B6’s role in fighting inflammation of the colon. Researchers investigated the link between vitamin B6 and inflammatory markers in the colon. In their conclusion, the researchers suggest “vitamin B6 supplementation may offer an additional tool for the management of inflammatory bowel disease.” 26

A three-years survey on depressive symptoms compared participants’ B6 levels at baseline. The authors concluded that “a higher vitamin B6 status may be associated with a decreased risk of depressive symptoms.” (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, October 2013). B12 deficiency from antacids often overlooked. In this large study, over 210,000 patients were evaluated for B12 status and duration of antacid use. For patients taking a proton pump inhibitor antacid (Prilosec) the chances of having a vitamin B12 deficiency was 66 percent higher than not having a B12 deficiency. For people taking a histamine 2 receptor antagonist antacid (Tagamet), their chance of B12 deficiency was 24 percent higher than not becoming B12 deficient. Also, the longer the person took antacids or the higher the dose, the higher their chances of becoming B12 deficient. (Journal of the American Medical Association, December 2013). Study confirms antacids may cause heart problems by depleting magnesium. 421 patients who were admitted to a New York hospital for chest pain and heart attack were evaluated in this study. Of these patients, 44 percent were taking proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec) for gastrointestinal upset. Researchers found a “significant association between the PPI use, magnesium levels, and the occurrence of cardiovascular events.” (Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology, July 2013), (Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 2012). Vitamin C deficiency accelerates heart disease. While reviewing the role vitamin C deficiency plays in vascular disease

At the end of the study, the women who became replete in vitamin D through better compliance, lost more weight.

progression, it was found that 10 to 20 percent of the American population is likely deficient in this powerful antioxidant. This deficiency likely contributes to heart disease. (Antioxidant and Redox Signaling, June 2013). Researchers clarify the role of vitamin D in sleep disorders. A group of scientists recently sought to clarify the role vitamin D plays in regulating sleep patterns. Several key inflammatory chemicals that regulate inflammation also regulate sleep! These inflammatory chemicals are significantly affected by vitamin D level. The link between vitamin D and sleep was tested in 1,500 patients with abnormal sleep patterns. Sleep improved only in patients who achieved adequate blood levels of vitamin D (60-80 ng/mL) after two years of supplementation. (Sleep Medicine Review, September 2013), (Medical Hypotheses, 2012). Study explains vitamin D’s role in preventing autoimmune diseases. High dose vitamin D was given to 60 healthy individuals. After 3 months, their regulatory cells increased significantly. This is particularly important to help the body build tolerance to self-antigens. These cells regulate the immune system to prevent it from attacking its own tissues. Vitamin D reduces autoimmune diseases of all types. (European Journal of Nutrition, September 2013). Vitamin D repletion lowers inflammatory marker CRP. In this study, 218 overweight women with vitamin D levels below 32ng/mL (classified as deficient) were assigned to a weight loss regimen. Half of the women took 2000 IU of vitamin D daily while the other half took a placebo. At the end of the study, the women who became replete in vitamin D through better compliance, lost more weight. Those who took vitamin D also showed a much higher reduction (46 percent reduction vs. 25 percent reduction) in the inflammatory marker CRP (C-reactive protein). (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, March 2014). MAY 2014 CTWMAG.COM

NATURAL APPROACH

VITAMINS

Vitamin D is particularly effective in reducing inflammation and pain in people having very low levels. A study of 30 women with fibromyalgia who had vitamin D levels below 32ng/mL, also considered deficient, were given oral vitamin D supplements or a placebo. After 20 weeks, optimization of vitamin D status had a “positive effect on the perception of pain.” (Nutrition Reviews, February 2014), (Pain, February 2014). Evidence mounts for link between vitamin D and multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D status was measured in 98 patients with multiple sclerosis and blood levels of vitamin D were much lower in the patients with MS compared to healthy controls. Researchers also found that the levels of vitamin D were correlated to the severity of multiple sclerosis. (International Journal of Preventive Medicine, May 2013), (Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, March 2013). Study shows why nerves won’t grow when deficient in zinc. When scientists studied the growth of nerves and their ability to regenerate under zinc-deficient conditions, they found the reason neural repair is compromised when insufficient zinc is available. (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, November 2013). Zinc benefits alopecia. In this case study, thyroxine treatment was given to a 28-yearold female to treat hypothyroidism. Her clinical manifestations of low thyroid—notably thinning hair—did not improve with thyroid treatment so a zinc supplement was added to her thyroid regimen. After one month, scaly skin lesions had cleared completely and her depression began to lift. After four months, there was a “complete regrowth of hair,” which demonstrates how zinc’s role in synthesizing thyroid hormones manifests clinically. (International Journal of Trichology, January 2013. Zinc depletion may cause leaky gut syndrome. The role of zinc in reducing inflammation is well-documented. The authors state this explains “the clinical observation that zinc supplements improve Crohn’s disease symptoms and decrease leaky gut colitis.” (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, June 2013). Multi-Vitamin supplementation shows promise for adults with ADHD. In this double-blind randomized controlled trial, 80 adults with ADHD were given either a potent multi-vitamin supplement or a placebo for eight weeks. When evaluated by clinicians, it was found that those on the multi-vitamin regimen showed significantly more clinical improvement than those on the placebo. Furthermore, those who began treatment with moderate to severe depression showed the most clinical improve28

ment when supplemented. No adverse events were reported. (British Journal of Psychiatry, January 2014). When given antioxidants, patients voluntarily stopped pain medication. Ninety-eight adult patients having chronic lower back pain for over 12 weeks were given 600 mg alpha-lipoic acid and 140 IU of the powerful antioxidant superoxide dismutase for 60 days and assessed for pain, back function and use of analgesics. At the end of the study, only 8 percent of patients were still using pain meds, compared to 74 percent of patients at the beginning of the study. Clinical indicators of pain significantly decreased, and back function improved after about 40 days of the antioxidant treatment. (European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, October 2013).

MIND & SPIRIT

SPIRITUAL CRISIS

It’s Anxiety—It’s Depression. No, It’s a

SPIRITUAL CRISIS

by Wayne M. Levine

YOUR LIFE JUST ISN’T MEASURING UP. YOU’RE ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED BECAUSE YOU KNOW THINGS SHOULD BE BETTER—YOU SHOULD BE MORE SUCCESSFUL BY NOW—YOU SHOULD HAVE THE RELATIONSHIPS YOU WANT—YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY.

YOUR CONCLUSION? THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU.

30

|

CTW MAGAZINE MAY 2014

What’s the point? You’re not the first ill-informed man to come to this erroneous conclusion. In fact, you’re in very good company. To paraphrase that ridiculous commercial, “I’m not just the director of this men’s center, I’m a member, too!” I’ve been there. Let me tell you how it happened. Many years ago I was in a men’s group. One week we met in a local park and circled up under a large eucalyptus tree. It was a beautiful day with a light ocean breeze and I was feeling like a champ. Our leader at the time ran us through a few exercises; we helped out a few of the men. And then—then the question, “What do you believe in?” A couple of the Jewish guys believed in their God. Our Native American followed the red road. A couple of other men had their own strong spiritual beliefs unattached to anything organized. And then, “Levine, what do you believe in?” Silence. I’m a Jew raised atheist. I was never a member of any club. Once again, I found myself on the outside looking in. Stunned. Untethered. “I believe in myself,” I said. After I received some quizzical looks, one man suggested I read two books that helped him discover his spiritual path. Then it was suggested to me that while doing my daily dog walking, I start talking to God and sharing how grateful I am.

Remind yourself it’s not just about you by volunteering and making it about someone else.

But relying on me was all I knew. I had never learned to ask for help. There wasn’t much help around in my family. So, like every other kid in less than desirable surroundings, I adapted and developed some amazing coping skills. But they weren’t enough— at least they were no longer enough. I had become completely self-centered. I was the center of my universe. That’s how I saw the world and how I addressed every challenge that crossed my path. I was the foundation upon which I stood. I was what grounded me. I counted on me! But the foundation of that wounded little boy was not strong enough to support a man with mature responsibilities, questions and challenges. My problems, if too challenging for me, caused me to feel completely overwhelmed. Being out of control scared me to death, and a few times my thoughts went to just that permanent solution to relieve my excruciating pain.

I can’t begin to tell you how extraordinarily uncomfortable this all was. Talk to God!? What!? But I trusted the men and I did it, daily, until it began to change me.

The good news is that I don’t go there anymore. I don’t get overwhelmed with anxiety. I no longer lose my sense of self in depression for days and weeks on end. Doubt doesn’t get the best of me for very long. And I’ve seen many men experience this same remarkable transformation.

Here’s What I Learned

Let Me Pay It Forward

For most of my life, I relied on me— that’s it. And it worked most of the time. But when it didn’t work, when I couldn’t measure up, when my confidence failed me, I spiraled into anxiety and then depression.

Here’s what I suggest: • Read “Conversations with God” and “Way of the Peaceful Warrior.” • Take time each day to be grateful. • Remind yourself it’s not just

about you by volunteering and making it about someone else. • Develop a connection with some sense of a higher power so you never forget you are not in charge. • Ask for help every step of the way. I’ve offered these same recommendations to men for years. And I’ve seen men make terrific progress. When they begin to look outward, their need for control diminishes. When they ask for help, they learn to rely on others and not just upon their own limited counsel. And when they become better men they’re so much more pleasant to be around. In this process your definition of success evolves. How much money you thought you needed is revised. The changes you make attract and heal your relationships. And happiness, though looking quite different than you once imagined, is yours.

The consensus is that we created this condition ourselves. It’s hugely a result of the upward climb—the striving for success and a better way of life instilled in many of us by our parents, teachers, friends, coworkers—society in general. Our upward climb relatively recently met with a downhill dip significant enough to knock many of us off kilter, and we’re still in flux. Things around us are changing—we are changing—many of us are now searching more intently for a way of life that increases our satisfaction and happiness.

I personally began to experiment years ago with letting go and finding the flow. I had always been an A-type, driven by a quest for success, measured in terms of how far I could climb the career ladder— with my personal life attached the way a side-car connects to a motorcycle.

It took me quite awhile—an MBA degree and more than a decade after graduating with my BS degree, to realize I wasn’t on a path to happiness. The business world was fraught with people trying to climb to the top—regardless of whose career they had to disrupt or what untruths they had to set in place in order to get there. And I had sacrificed my personal life so severely that I was lonely.

Some of us are even defaulting to our true passions and our reasons for being, rather than looking for a heftier paycheck—

Testing the Alternative I was introduced to the theory that if you stop trying to control everything, your life can be better than your plans. Having an open mind and many strong personal and career reasons to want things to change, I dropped the reins on my career to test the theory. The division of the corporation I worked for was in trouble. I had ventured out to other divisions to make myself known and offer my availability during slow times in my own job. Two different divisions gave me overflow work. Later, when my division became defunct, both division managers wanted to hire me. I felt my controlling side kick in because one of the jobs seemed to offer more future potential and I wanted it. But as serious as I was about continuing to climb the ladder, I was more serious about testing the theory of letting go that was new to me. I decided to let the two managers negotiate with each other, and determine my fate. Interestingly, the division I least wanted hired me. I really enjoyed working with my new manager and I learned a great deal. For six months I worked on a multimillion dollar proposal. When we didn’t win the contract, I was laid off along with others on the team. I recovered by starting my own marketing business, and found I was truly glad I had let that fateful decision be made for me. I thrived working for myself.

Going With the Flow My path since then has been a totally enthralling (to me), winding road as I continue to go with the flow and observe at key times rather than deciding my own fate. New worlds have opened up to me, far richer than I could have imagined years ago. And I am a completely different person. Friends notice it, too—they describe me as laid back and ironically—in control. Some people have even said that peace exudes from me—that it makes them feel calmer to be near me. This is not to brag—it’s just my personal example of what is possible when you decide it’s alright to let go.

What is Letting Go? Many people haven’t realized they’re hanging on to things that won’t ever deliver. I am working to introduce each one of them to the theory that there is a flow to life. Letting go is a surrender with faith. It’s done with the belief that if you

do what you can to contribute your gifts to the world, doors will open and the right things will come to you to help you continue contributing. What can make it scary is that letting go is something you have to be willing to step out and do in order to see for yourself if it really works. It’s a path that must be experienced to be understood, appreciated and finally marveled at. If you feel stuck in your life—if things aren’t as you had hoped or planned, I encourage you to see if letting go— surrendering to the flow of life—might result in a better direction for you. It takes awhile—it’s a path that requires practice and even re-surrendering along the way. But it can be more rewarding than anything you ever anticipated. Enjoy!

UCAAN Finds Solutions for Cancer Patients in Need

by Alicia Doyle

CTW MAGAZINE MAY 2014

I believe patients should have the right to choose what they want and they should also be informed of possible treatment side effects.

DIAGNOSED WITH TERMINAL LEUKEMIA IN 2006 AND 2007, RACHEL SHUR NEVER DREAMED THE DISEASE WOULD EMPOWER HER TO START A NATIONAL EFFORT THAT FOCUSES ON FINDING SOLUTIONS FOR CANCER PATIENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. “In one fell swoop I had lost my independence, my job, my home, friends and my stability,” recalled Shur, 33, of Thousand Oaks. “But I found a way that worked for me to get through it.” A self-proclaimed cancer survivor extraordinaire, Shur is the founder and executive director of United Cancer Advocacy Action Network, a 501c3 nonprofit organization known as UCAAN. “I have a unique outlook about cancer and how to fight it,” Shur said. Up to 80 percent of those who contact UCAAN are located outside of California and face difficulty in finding resources to fill their immediate needs. “They have heard ‘no’ so many times and come to us sometimes with little to no hope,” Shur said. “We find a way to help them; no patient is turned away.”

Free Services UCAAN provides free services and programs based on the needs of patients nationwide, including customized resources from an extensive database comprised of more than 1,700 organizations. “My favorite program is our unique personal fundraising program that empowers patients to fundraise for themselves to help pay for needs not covered by other organizations. with any form of cancer, at any stage, nationwide.”

Cancer Survivor Extraordinaire About a year after Shur was diagnosed, she started sharing her story about surviving cancer. “My speeches turned into a love to speak and what stemmed from that was a realization that I had to get involved with others who had cancer,” Shur said. With that, Shur volunteered for a charitable organization. “But I experienced situations while volunteering that I just didn’t like. One of them was at an event where I heard the speaker ask, “How many patients here have raised money?”

Team UCAAN Located in building E at 1459 East Thousand Oaks Blvd., UCAAN is run entirely by volunteers, including Shur, five board members and two advisors. “Our board members have experience in nonprofits, fundraising, business management and advertising,” said Shur, further noting that these volunteers have had cancer or experienced a friend or family member with the disease. “We call ourselves a family and everyone brings their own talents and skills to the table to create Team UCAAN,” Shur said. “People come to UCAAN who have continually hit a brick wall looking for the help they need,” Shur added. “In many cases the people who come to us are close to giving up.” The UCAAN family is especially excited about its new shirt—“Purple is the New Pink.” “It’s meant to raise awareness that purple is the universal color of all cancers, which is why our ribbons are purple,” Shur said. “We help everyone, 38

“For me, this was the opposite of what I thought should have been said. Why didn’t they ask, ‘How many patients there have beat cancer?’” Shur said. A short time later, Shur’s little brother suggested she start her own nonprofit organization. “I responded to him jokingly that I wasn’t that crazy to do such a thing,” Shur remembered. “But as time went on, I saw nothing better than to start my own organization with the values and goals that I had envisioned.” Shur ultimately launched UCAAN because she struggled so much with her personal battle. “I couldn’t understand why it was so difficult to find the help,” Shur said. “I saw so much money going into cancer and couldn’t fathom why more financial assistance wasn’t available.” With that, she decided UCAAN would focus on the immediate needs of those fighting the disease. “The people we have helped through UCAAN over the years have become part of our UCAAN family,” Shur said. “For the organizations I volunteered with prior to starting UCAAN, I never

once felt like a team or a family and I knew I had to create something that made all of us feel like we were home.”

Worldwide Vision Five years after launching UCAAN, “I couldn’t think of anything else I’d rather do,” Shur said. “We believe UCAAN do anything you put your mind to.” The future of UCAAN involves offering more financial and emotional support and growing big enough to help cancer patients worldwide. “We hope to impact the lives of more and more cancer patients,” said Shur. She recently applied for grants to offer an extension of UCAAN’s dental program, as well as a new therapeutic writing program for children and young adults. “We are reaching out for support from our community from small and large businesses, corporations and the public to continue to offer our free programs and services,” Shur said. To make a donation to UCAAN visit www.UCAAN.org/Support-UCAAN/ UCAANdonate; email SponsorNow@ UCAAN.org; or call 805.796.6090 or 805.479.1032.
