REALITY IN PARADISE I love working in my little garden. It’s very small but holds a paradise of beautiful flowers, each with their own offerings of joy. The butterflies, hummingbirds and bees collectively gather in my garden to feast on various nectars. Their presence brings me a sense of calm—without them my sacred space of joy would not be complete.

But the story becomes more involved when looking at the big picture of reality we are facing—climate change, the seriously dwindling bee population and the toxic environment Mother Nature must constantly battle as a result of our daily neglect. What would happen if the bees disappeared? The results would be devastating. It would cause a domino effect that could wipe out life as we know it. This is not theory—this is science. Now our beautiful state of California is in serious trouble as we face the driest winter in two decades. So we have to do more than just recycle, bring our own shopping bags and change our lighting. Now we have to cut back on water use. I turn back to my garden with plans to add drought-resistant plants, organic amendments and plenty of mulch to the soil to hold the moisture, hence reducing my use of water. In this issue, we provide the latest update on what’s happening with harmful chemicals in our environment, and address little-known facts about permaculture, the bee population, how our diets impact the environment, and how TMJ disorder can negatively impact our general health. In our Connection this month, we introduce Dr. Mirela Cernaianu at HERA Healthcare Medical Practice in Westlake Village.
