CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

A spa that not only gives you decadent pleasure but also donates 50% of its prot to charity. We call it the New Luxury. In early June, we open our doors at Love, an organic salon, spa and yoga center in Simi Valley. And we're different – very different. Imagine walking into a space that takes your breath away with its beauty. You're greeted by staff so warm and authentic, you feel like they’re friends who flew into town just for your birthday. One of them brings you a complimentary tray of rejuvenating herbal latte and homemade artisan treats. A friendly face offers you a free foot, neck and shoulder massage. Your eyes close as you let go and trust this unusual place. Our intention is what makes us so special. We give half of all our profits away to charitable causes. At the end of your visit, we'll even ask you to choose the charity you'd like us to donate that money to, such as women’s rights in developing countries, feeding hungry children or environmental issues. Enjoy a Free Massage During our Grand Opening Month

Putting love and service above profit also affects our decisions on other things. For example, we refuse to use toxic ammonia-based hair color. We use only vibrant, non-toxic organic hair treatments. Our decision to put you first guides everything here, from the transcendent experience of our 30-foot high yoga sanctuary, featuring anti-gravity aerial yoga, to our healing day-spa journeys. Because 50% of our profit goes to help others, your choice to pamper yourself here radiates love outward to the rest of the world long after you exit our doors – a win-win, where you can spread love simply by loving yourself.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

SACRED SPACE

SACRED SPACE How would you define a sacred space? Is it the church you attend, the beach or a special place in your garden? Wherever it is, everyone needs a place to call sacred.

ANN K. CASTLE FOUNDER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & PUBLISHER

This is a special place where your heart and soul connect in sacred silence—to have that moment where you can hear your rhythmic breathing and to be present with what is most sacred to you. It is about creating a space in order to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit, be in a state of gratitude and to complete the spectrum of well-being. With constant stresses hammering at us daily, we need a time to step away, breathe and decompress. For years there have been numerous studies on the importance of extreme self-care, yet we still jolt our bodies out of bed, grab our morning coffee, and immerse ourselves in a rigorous workout in a noisy and chaotic environment without having a moment to breathe and connect. Think of it this way—when you start your car in the morning, don’t you give it a few minutes to warm up before driving? This enables the oil to change viscosity so it works properly with the engine’s needs. Your mind, body and spirit need time to wake, breathe and be present in order to handle the stresses of the day, so why are we not treating our bodies as well as we treat our cars? If you’re wondering if I have a sacred space for myself, the answer is yes. I have a room where my work desk is located, but there is space where I can sit, start with a prayer of gratitude, grace and blessings, and have time to be in the moment. To complete my space, I play my husband’s CD, “Harmony Within.” He is not only a professional musician but a certified sound healer and the sound of him playing the quartz crystal bowls is relaxing and centering for me. Developing a sacred space is just one aspect of rejuvenation. In this issue we present to you the various places, to escape, relax and rejuvenate. We are excited to announce the opening of the Love Organic Salon Spa Yoga in Simi Valley where you can nurture your mind, body and spirit in a serenely beautiful environment. Also we introduce to you Dr. Clinton Pomroy of Therapy Services Plus—a well-respected doctor of Naturopathy in Agoura, and Wayne Levine, director of BetterMen Coaching and best-selling author based in Agoura Hills. Take time to visit the various places for that much-needed escape and more. I hope this issue will provide you with the vital information for your complete health and well-being. Relax and enjoy! With Peace, Love, Blessings and Gratitude,

Ann

BETTERMEN HELPS MEN BE BETTER HUSB

LEADERS AND ALL-AROUND B 10

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

During his next 30 years of hair loss, he learned about men, women, relationships, parenting sons and daughters, spirituality, childhood wounds, depression and anxiety, empty nest syndrome, successfully managing ailing parents, sex, career changes and much more. “It wasn’t until I accepted the wisdom of other men that I began to be a better father and husband,” said Levine, who spent years as a volunteer working with men, men’s groups, retreats and trainings, later earning a master’s degree in clinical psychology at Antioch University. In 2001, he became a men’s life coach. “When I made the commitment to break through my personal barriers, I learned to trust my gut and finally feel comfortable in my own skin,” he said. “It wasn’t until my initiation into manhood that I came to see myself as a man, not as a boy.”

BETTERMEN COACHING There are few places men can go with their challenges and pain where they’ll find someone who instantly understands, Levine said.

“Most men don’t need a diagnosis; they need good, healthy men to guide them toward solutions,” he said. “I’m the head man here, but I’m not the only man. In our men’s groups, men receive that guidance, camaraderie, ass-kicking, accountability, and healthy ribbing from a circle of men.” It’s in these circles, and working with Levine one-on-one, that men receive the fathering they need in order to be the best fathers they can be. “They also learn the skills required to be better husbands, leaders and all-around better guys,” Levine said. In addition to individual coaching, couples coaching and weekly groups, Levine offers an annual BetterMen Weekend, an initiation into manhood in Santa Barbara, attracting men from around the world. “The three-day retreat offers men a rare opportunity to learn about themselves as men in the company of other good men,” Levine said. “It’s a transformative experience.” He also coaches young men, some with single moms, others with fathers who aren’t healthy enough to properly parent their boys. “And then there are the dads who wisely understand that, even when their relationships are strong, it sometimes helps to have another man’s perspective, both for father and son,” Levine said.

MEN’S WORK “Most of this men’s work, as we call it, takes place in my office in Agoura Hills,” explained Levine, who also coaches men from around the world via phone or Skype. He leads men’s groups on the phone, as well, for men who live out of the area. “That’s how I spend my daylight hours,” Levine said. “As the sun sets, I can be found facilitating our men’s groups Monday through Thursday evenings. My colleague also leads a men’s group on Saturday mornings.” Men typically find their way to Levine before, during and after divorces. “They come because they’re struggling as fathers,” he said. “Some seek out the camaraderie with men they’ve never had in order to overcome their isolation and sense of loneliness. Others are simply unhappy and don’t know why.”

BETTERMEN COACHING

Many men are angry, anxious, frustrated, confused, and desperate to better understand themselves so they can feel successful in all aspects of their lives, Levine added. “More often than not, we see great progress, allowing men to have the relationships they truly want, find and explore their passion, change careers, and discover their place in the world as healthy and confident men,” he said.

T H E R E L AT I O N S H I P MANUAL FOR MEN

Born in the Bronx, Levine was raised in Connecticut until age nine. That year his father died at age 43 and his mother moved them to Tempe, Arizona. He later attended USC on a full scholarship, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism and, more importantly, earning the affections of his soon-to-be wife, now of 30 years. Today, his book, “Hold On to Your N.U.T.s—The Relationship Manual for Men,” is a best-seller on Amazon, and available in all forms, including audio, at www.bettermencoacing.com. “This has become my best calling card,” Levine said. “Many of my clients read my book before contacting me for coaching. It contains many of the principles I use in helping men understand themselves and their relationships. Women enjoy reading it as well. In fact, it’s often the women who encourage their men to finally reach out for help.”

PURPOSEFUL LIFE Looking back on his vocation so far, Levine feels blessed to have discovered his passion and purpose in this life. “It’s something I help the men discover for themselves,” Levine said. “Having been a wounded boy who protected his feelings by developing a strong and false ego, I’m grateful to have received the help I needed to cast aside most of those old perspectives and behaviors. Teaching others to do the same makes for a great work week.” As far as his future is concerned, Levine wants to continue seeing men grow up to be the best they can be. “If we can achieve that, then their wives, kids, and everyone else in their lives benefit,” he said. His attention these days has been toward the spiritual. “I’ve been exploring my own spirituality and teaching the men how to bring out the goddess in their women,” Levine said. “This connection to the divine is a very ancient and lost discipline. And it’s so desperately needed in our relationships and in the world.” BetterMen Coaching is located at 5030 Chesebro Rd., Suite 102, in Agoura Hills. “Naturopathy emphasizes wellness through prevention [and] natural and holistic approaches,” Dr. Pomroy explained. “We are educated from day one in a true art of integrated medicine, blending and recommending many modalities of medical care into a thoughtful approach for patients.” A graduate of National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Pomroy founded New Horizons Naturopathic Clinic in Colorado in 1986. Today his practice is part of a team of wellness providers at Therapy Services in Agoura Hills. “I specialize in difficult to treat cases and offer an abundance of resources to assist your health care needs,” says Dr. Pomroy. “No two people are alike; each requires an individualized approach to get to the root of the problems. I take time with patients to understand the dynamic forces influencing their health.”

hormonal imbalances, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, and non-surgical joint restoration. He also provides supportive care for those with cancer. “…Naturopathic medicine has proven helpful in virtually all health issues I have encountered,” reports Dr. Pomroy, who sees patients of all ages, faced with simple to complex conditions. “Team building with other specialty health care providers encourages optimal paths to health for [our patients].” Dr. Pomroy’s methods include clinical nutrition approaches, intravenous (IV) therapy, electrodermal screening, neural therapy, prolotherapy, homeopathic and herbal treatments, and other modalities. “Investigation of underlying conditions using functional laboratory methods helps identify where problems lie within the body,” he explained.

Dr. Pomroy recognizes dental health’s profound impact on wellness. “Dental issues [are] a vital part often overlooked by conventional dental and medical practitioners,” he said.

He identifies problems in the mouth and works closely with specialized dentists to resolve the issues. “Infections and toxins are removed from the mouth and the entire body, lowering the burden or source of toxicity,” said Dr. Pomroy. The first specialist he sought in California was a biological dentist. “That’s how I met Dr. David Villarreal, a protégé of Dr. Hal Huggins,” Dr. Pomroy said. “His mercury-free approach and understanding of health, respective of dental conditions, is invaluable.”

nutritional and dietary requirements and deficits through functional laboratory testing,” Dr. Pomroy said. Detoxification: The world is filled with pollutants and toxins that poison you and hinder your wellness. “I design and provide a variety of detoxification programs to assist in removing pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, plasticizers and other chemicals that influence…your normal hormonal and metabolic activities,” Dr. Pomroy said. “To aid in cleansing the body I sought the services of a colon hydrotherapist in California, which led me to Eloise Buckner. Her experience and understanding of health help detoxify the body so healing can begin from within.” Heavy Metal Chelation: Heavy metals are found in many places in our world. “…they show up in your body through diet, skincare, habits, drinking water and more. Removal of metals... that are generating negative toxic experiences in the body can profoundly [improve your] health,” Dr. Pomroy explained. The hCG Weight Loss Program: Using hCG as part of a comprehensive wellness plan helps people lose unwanted, resistant weight. “Once you’ve tried all the weight loss plans on the market, there’s one more program to explore,” Dr. Pomroy said. “I first employ approaches with diet, detoxification and hormonal balancing to correct factors influencing weight. Then, when appropriate, I use the hCG program. This program kick-starts the process of weight loss safely and quickly while I teach you the most valuable factors to help you create a sustainable weight management plan.” Bioidentical Hormonal Balance/Neurotransmitter Balance: When needed, Dr. Pomroy offers hormone replacement as part of an overall plan for wellness recovery. “Your hormone and brain chemistry is being pushed to the limits,” said Dr. Pomroy, who works with specialized pharmacies that custom make natural bioidentical hormone prescriptions and neurotransmitter remedies specific to your needs. Digestion/Intestinal Disorders: Many wellness issues or imbalances begin or are complicated by conditions in the gut, Dr. Pomroy emphasized. Health is impacted by an unhealthy gastrointestinal tract. “I focus on the health of the intestines and the roles the GI tract and proper digestion play in regaining and maintaining wellness,” Dr. Pomroy said. “Colon hydrotherapy, dietary changes, chiropractic care and targeted nutrient therapy…[help restore] the proper conditions within the intestinal tract to heal the whole body.” Chronic Illness: “Most people I see are experiencing conditions that have disrupted their health for quite some time and have gone undertreated,” Dr. Pomroy said. “…they are fed-up, tired, and put-out.” Naturopathic medicine is superior at helping unrelenting chronic health concerns. 16

Teaching the fundamentals of wellness means empowering you with knowledge, guiding you through health recovery and leading you to successful, lifelong healthcare maintenance choices.

“Naturopathic doctors resolve the true underlying conditions of illness. Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, among many other conditions, respond favorably with natural remedies and approaches,” Dr. Pomroy said. IV Nutritional Therapy: Sometimes the best remedy is to get the nutrients

directly into the bloodstream. “IV therapy is helpful with many conditions and concerns,” said Dr. Pomroy, who is exceptionally skilled at IV therapy, with over 18 years of clinical experience. Colds, flus, cardiovascular concerns, diabetes, chronic infections, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic GI disturbances, macular degeneration, respiratory issues, headaches, depression and anxiety are among many conditions that respond well to nutritional IV therapy. Spinal Alignment: The nervous system governs the function of many bodily systems. Naturopaths are formally trained in spinal manipulation. “I refer my patients to chiropractic care for the benefits proper spinal alignment gives to health recovery,” Dr. Pomroy said. Improper nerve conduction and

information flow compromise the body’s attempts to regulate wellness. Dr. Pomroy founded his practice on traditional naturopathic principles. He emphasizes educating patients about their unique wellness needs and insists patients take an active role in their own health care. “Teaching the fundamentals of wellness means empowering you with knowledge, guiding you through health recovery and leading you to successful, lifelong healthcare maintenance choices,” explains Dr. Pomroy. “We welcome you to explore the advantages…of…naturopathic medicine at Therapy Services in Agoura Hills.”

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

AN EXPERT AT OPENING SEVERAL LUXURY RESORT SPAS FOR FOUR SEASONS, FAIRMONT AND MONTAGE HOTELS, SHERI CLAFLIN WAS DRAWN TO LOVE ORGANIC SALON FOR SEVERAL REASONS—THE FIRST BEING THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A UNIQUE WELLNESS DESTINATION THAT CELEBRATES GRATITUDE AND HAS A HIGHER PURPOSE OF GIVING BACK. “I had long hoped to do something philanthropic, so to be able to do so while staying in the industry I so loved was the perfect example of serendipity for me,” said Claflin, whose top level experience in the spa and wellness industry spans over 14 years. She is now the director of spa development at Love Organic Salon, which recently launched a new location in Simi Valley. “Love was truly created to be a place where we can celebrate the ways in which we honor ourselves, one another and the planet we share,” Claflin said. “I’m so thankful I had an opportunity to be a part of its inception and breathe life into it from the very beginning.”

Certified Organic Ingredients “Several things are incredibly different about Love,” Claflin said. For one, “we have made the conscious decision to use solely certified organic ingredients in the skincare and hair care products we offer our clients.” She explained this certification process is an additional step, and expense, for Love’s partner vendors. “However, it absolutely ensures each client receives the most resultsdriven products that are not only healthier alternatives but in complete synergy with nature.”

Local and Global Change “Love stands for purity, honesty, integrity and transparency—qualities sorely lacking in most companies today,” Claflin said. “Love is especially unique for its mission.”

“We are classified as a benefit corporation wholly dedicated to helping people, sustaining the environment and impacting the community we serve,” Claflin said. “We are committed to donating 50 percent of all profits to non-profit organizations that are driving both local and global change.” C

LOVE styling products. As an organic spa and salon, we pride ourselves in working in synergy with nature to nourish, heal and restore your state of well-being,” Claflin said.

Love Yoga Studio The yoga studio centers on the mind-body practice of yoga, recognized for its ability to reduce stress and boost well-being. “The Eastern practice of yoga has become a modern-day symbol of peace, serenity and well-being in the West, offering wide-ranging physical health benefits that rival other forms of exercise,” Claflin said.

Aerial Yoga Love is the only studio in Simi Valley to offer aerial yoga—also known as anti-gravity yoga—along with a full complement of other yoga classes to meet the needs of any yoga enthusiast. “Aerial yoga is a practice in which the participant is supported in a hammock for the duration of the class,” Claflin explained. “The class promotes greater flexibility and strength by using the body’s own weight to support itself without any compression to the joints or spine. It is visually stunning to watch and an addicting workout.”

The Visionary Behind Love Klee Irwin, the founding father of the Love concept, wanted to do his part to help solve some of the world’s major crises, both environmental and humanitarian. “He had an idea of doing so through an immersive and comprehensive wellness experience that included a salon, spa and yoga,” Claflin said. “He envisioned a stunning visual space that was truly unique with a warm and authentic group of dedicated, like-minded wellness professionals.”

You want to look and feel your best but nothing is providing what your body and spirit need— not trips to the spa, vitamins, the latest exercise, a variety of pharmaceuticals or your self-help books.

It’s Time to Restore, Repair and Rejuvenate!

Use it or lose it— stimulate your brain with activity. Learn a new language, read, problemsolve or practice awareness—notice sounds, smells and visually stimulating objects.

Rejuvenation, the reversal of aging, requires a unique strategy—repair the damage associated with aging— replace damaged tissue with new tissue. The only way to restore your body is from the inside. Over time, cells and cell membranes become compromised. They don’t function with the same efficiency or energy. Circuits have been shorted. The DNA telomeres that protect your genetic data and enable cells to divide become shortened.

Stem Cells Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types. They serve as an internal repair system, dividing without limit to replenish other cells. When a stem cell divides, each new cell either remains a stem cell or becomes a more specialized cell such as a muscle, red blood or brain cell. Adult stem cells are important for many reasons. In some tissues such as bone marrow, muscle and brain, they generate replacements for cells lost through normal wear and tear, injury or disease. Professional athletes use them to repair injuries or damage. The primary roles of adult stem cells are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Scientists have found adult stem cells in many more tissues than once thought possible. Stem cell research is expanding. I continue to be amazed at the volumes of research and my own positive clinical results using adult stem cell

replacement. Blood is drawn from the patient and sent to a specific lab. The stem cells are separated and then infused directly back into the patient.

IV (Intravenous) Therapies The only way we get or stay healthy is by the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. No one eats perfectly. IV therapies provide what the body needs so it can help itself. Nutritional health care practitioners use IV drips to deliver nutrients directly to the cells. IV nutrients circumvent the digestive system and go directly to the source of the problem, providing faster results. They bathe the cells in nutrients—hydrating the body and detoxifying the lymphatic system and the liver. If nutrients are taken by mouth, deficient hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes and a lack of beneficial gut bacteria interfere with their travel through the stomach. When you simply cannot afford to be sick or to lack energy, consider IV therapy. It can help people who can’t swallow vitamin pills, who have a history of digestive problems and who want to improve their overall health.

your body cells to create energy. It also occurs when your body needs to repair a wound or perform other regular functions. The process of oxidation is necessary and good. It builds cells, but it also creates a percentage of free radicals. Free radicals—oxygen molecules that are missing an electron—are very damaging. The chemical reactions that occur when they bond to other molecules damage cell membranes, cell proteins, lipids and DNA. This is known as oxidative stress, which plays a role in all chronic diseases including the peripheral neuropathy (nerve deterioration) of diabetes, liver disease, asthma and cancer among others. Antioxidants are nature’s antidote to free radicals. Intensive antioxidant therapy can be delivered using IV glutathione. IV detoxification is effective in supporting rejuvenation—ridding your body of toxins and inflammation. The following appeared in “Parkinson’s Disease Update” Issue 128, 2002: “Glutathione is…an important antioxidant throughout the body and in the brain. Glutathione and enzymes related to its metabolism have been reported to be depleted in the substantia nigra of brains of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The primary role of glutathione is to protect cells from free radicals… destructive chemicals formed by normal metabolism and by exposure to various environmental toxins. Glutathione also enhances the function of other antioxidant compounds by keeping them in a form suitable for capture of free radicals.” Dr. David Perlmutter, a boardcertified neurologist and author of “Grain Brain,” began glutathione IV therapy for PD patients in 1998. He writes, “The effectiveness of this brain 24

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

antioxidant in Parkinson’s disease is nothing short of miraculous.” Perlmutter also claims, “…our PD patients are now realizing profound improvements with respect to reduction of rigidity, increased mobility, improved ability to speak, less depression and decreased tremor. Glutathione…protect[s] the brain from free radical damage, thus slowing the progression of the underlying illness.” Glutathione plus vitamin C enhances your immunity, reduces tiredness and gives more youthful, radiant skin. Glutathione coupled with a well-balanced diet, daily exercise and a stress free life can have a powerful and positive impact.

Stimulating Your Mind Lightens Your Mood Use it or lose it—stimulate your brain with activity. Learn a new language, read, problem-solve or practice awareness—notice sounds, smells and visually stimulating objects. This keeps your neurological pathways open. Practicing spirituality can also improve your physical health, reduce suffering, increase your happiness and make you more social. Try meditation, prayer, or practicing forgiveness and gratitude.

Eat Well Eat whole, organic foods and drink half your body weight in water. Recent research from England established that you can slow down the aging process by reducing the number of calories consumed. Specific comprehensive liqiud vitamins can be a very effective way to supplement your nutrient needs.

Exercise Exercise is one of the best ways to keep you healthier and younger—it’s

like a fountain of youth. “The mantra now is, exercise is a drug,” said Dr. Andrea Cheville, a Mayo Clinic expert on exercise in the elderly. Like medication, it can prevent and treat many age-related problems. Exercise helps to control weight, produce good cholesterol, and regulate blood pressure, mood and sleep. It lowers the risk of cancer and Alzheimer’s and improves your bones. People suffering from back pain and arthritis find more relief after exercising rather than letting their pain stop them. Nine studies during a 14-year period and including more than 34,000 subjects 65 and older showed that faster walking speeds are associated with living longer. Staying active can help prevent heart attacks. Don’t strive to walk faster than is safe for your condition, but if your gate is slower than about 1.4 miles per hour, you should focus on any health issues that are causing this. Many of these anti-aging tips are interdependent. Exercise keeps the mind sharper.

Sleep You may hear people say, “I’ll sleep when I die.” Lack of sleep may actually precipitate death. Sleep is the time your body needs to restore itself. REM sleep is especially important. Avoid using sleeping medications

whenever possible as they interfere with REM sleep.

Balance Hormones The loss of energy, focus, low libido and stamina— the classic symptoms of declining hormone levels—drive patients to my office. First we remove the root causes of inflammation, deficiencies and imbalance. Since estrogen, progesterone and testosteronein women and testosterone in men decrease rapidly after age 35, it is imperative to replace, restore and rebalance thyroid, cortisol, sex hormones and neurotransmitters. Your body will be healthier and you will get the bounce back in your step. You know the saying, “You are only as old as you feel.” Keep these keys handy and review them often to be sure you are doing everything you can to rejuvenate, restore and repair.

Friends and family are trying to be helpful. They see you struggling, torturing yourself, blaming yourself, being overwrought with anger or sadness. They care about you and want you to move on. You probably want the same for yourself. But it’s not that simple, is it? Letting go isn’t a distinct action. It’s the natural result of an intentional process. If you’re stuck in the aftermath of an unpleasant or difficult event, you’ll want to commit to this healing process.

They Won’t Let Go Paul’s been divorced for a few years. But he’s still slogging through life sad, and wondering how it all went so wrong. Instead of getting back on the horse, dating and finding a compatible someone, he’s depressed, stuck and won’t let go. Mitch had his heart set on a new house. In his mind he had already remodeled and moved in. Unfortunately the seller’s terms became unacceptable and Mitch had

David had to break up with a young woman who was bringing far too much drama into his life. The problem is, although he knows it was a good decision, he’s still in love with her and can’t seem to move on and make himself available to other women. He just won’t let go. Ed joined forces with a friend to become partners in a new business venture—his friend as the majority partner and Ed as a silent investor. Well, the business plan didn’t pan out. When Ed tried to renegotiate and save a portion of his hefty investment, his friend and new partner, at least according to Ed, chose to save his own butt and threw Ed and his investment under the bus. Ed lost his investment and his friendship. He’s deeply wounded, enraged, and he won’t let go.

LETTING GO

Taking Responsibility The first step toward letting go is taking responsibility for your experience. As long as you want to blame her drama, his betrayal or their lack of integrity, you’ll be stuck in your resentment, disappointment and anger. We can’t control how others behave. We can only take ownership of how we react. This doesn’t mean we don’t feel the feelings of anger, sadness or disappointment. But how we respond makes all the difference. When we take responsibility we begin to allow ourselves to see how we’re culpable, how we might have missed the warning signs, or how our enthusiasm, naiveté or lack of preparation might have contributed to the unfortunate result. Taking the time to reflect on the series of events leading up to the pain, our actions, motivations and emotions, and how these all interacted with the motives and feelings of the other parties, brings into focus an entirely new reality. We begin to see where we might have changed course, spoken up or sought help along the way. When we engage in this sort of exploration, we begin to learn the valuable lessons needed to avoid similar pain in the future.

Lessons Learned Paul became aware of how unconscious he had been to his own feelings and experiences earlier in the marriage. He had made feeble attempts to express his observations and concerns with his wife. But her quick dismissals coupled with his aversion to conflict and his need to please, allowed him to deny the truth and the possibility for positive change. With this new awareness Paul began to let go. Mitch wanted to avenge his disappointment until he realized that the disappointing real estate transaction was of his own creation. He had become emotionally attached well before it was reasonable to even submit an initial proposal. His sense of betrayal, he learned, was part of a history of wishful thinking spawned by a series of real and painful childhood disappointments. David’s personal exploration revealed that he had fallen for a woman much like his mother. Mom lived in the center of a world swirling with drama. David was trying to fix his girlfriend in a doomed attempt to now control what he was unable to control in his mother’s home. He learned that fix-

ing his mom or any other woman simply wasn’t his job. He began to let go. Ed had made a poor business decision. He hadn’t done his homework; he never ran this by his trusted circle of advisors. His greed was masked by his naiveté that caused him to think that he could simply trust his friend with a substantial portion of his life savings. When Ed’s role in this financial disaster became clearer to him he stopped blaming his former friend and took ownership of his decisions. He learned a painful lesson, he let go and he began to rebuild. The most loving of family and friends can’t do this work for you as much as they might like to. Letting go and moving on is your work to do. But like everything, it’s a choice. Will you choose to stay in that blaming, depressed, sad or angry state, or will you take a deep breath, be courageous, ask for help and learn the lessons? Letting go is up to you.

PHYSICAL AWARNESS

IT WAS EARLY JUNE OF 2010 ON THE FIFTH DAY OF A SIX-DAY MIGRAINE WHEN I KNELT BY THE SIDE OF OUR BED, BURIED MY FACE IN THE COMFORTER AND SOBBED. I HAD NEVER FELT SO MUCH FEAR IN MY LIFE. DEBILITATING MIGRAINES HAD BEEN GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE SINCE THAT JANUARY, AND WHEN THEY HIT I WAS UNABLE TO FUNCTION.

OUR BODIES GUIDE US TO HEALTH—IF WE LISTEN! by Lori Sortino

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

My health was deteriorating slowly without fanfare. I hate pain. I can’t stand feeling weak. I love being strong and active. I have an attitude that I can do anything but this brought me literally to my knees. My husband had no idea what to do for me and I was unable to communicate or do anything other than lie down and sleep. When I was awake, I moaned. I could form words into sentences in moments of extreme focus and concentration somewhere in my consciousness, but that place was cut off from my physical body. I could not make anything coherent come out of my mouth. I recalled the book by Oliver Sachs, “Awakenings.” I had seen the movie based on the book, starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. I had met Oliver Sachs, the doctor whose character had been played by Robin Williams, so when I saw the movie I felt the realness of the story. It is about people who are comatose on the outside and mentally active somewhere on the inside without the ability to interact with the world around them.

The Answer Lies Within Experiencing this place—this state of being—frightened me and motivated me. What I have learned during the

journey since that pivotal moment is to trust my body and to listen to my body. I am far from fully recovered but I know that the answer to every next step is always within and I am learning a new way of being through practice. In a very dramatic way this experience forced me to look within for help. I had nowhere else to turn. I had no one else to ask because I functionally could not verbalize a question or a request. The inner dialogue became “Lori, what do you want to do?” followed by “… then you’re going to have to do it yourself.” At the core, this is about self-care and stress management. It’s about being aware of what my body’s telling me. It’s about unlearning the conditioning that created the practices of working 14-hour days, eating without consciousness and blindly copying the social behaviors going on around me.

Awakening I have fought the process and embraced it vigorously and it is a roller coaster ride for me. I called my first nutritionist a food Nazi. I spent a year in weekly acupuncture sessions that were my sanctuary.

PHYSICAL AWARNESS

Near the end of that first year, I followed through with the suggestion of my acupuncturist, Christina Pabers, to try a Harmonyum session (not harmonium the musical instrument). I had experienced Reiki a couple of times and really liked it, and I was game. Harmonyum Healing system is a holistic, physical and emotional healing and non-invasive modality used to bring forth the body’s capability of self-healing. The presence of Harmonyum in private alternative and integrative practices and addiction recovery facilities is growing. It is being embraced by many physicians for its ability to facilitate change at the patient’s spiritual level. The session lasted about an hour and I floated in and out in a dreamy state, growing more and more relaxed. Looking back, I would describe the experience like a physical hypnosis (in contrast to being verbally guided into a hypnotic state). When the session was over, I remained in a blissful, dreamy state for 20 or 30 minutes. I remember sitting in the lobby, a bit out of it, waiting to feel alert enough to drive. I can compare that experience to the frightening moments of being cut off from the world during my migraines. The difference was that in one I had the awareness of extreme suffering and in the other I was aware of extreme peace and bliss. In one I felt completely cut off and disconnected from my world. In the other I felt completely connected to my essence and my inner wisdom. In May of 2012 I took Harmonyum training and completed my practicum within three months. I am now a certified Harmonyum practitioner. Harmonyum has brought me the 32

most clarity and peace I have ever felt. Harmonyum honors the truth that each of us has the ability to access the answers we hold within us. I believe learning how to access the answers within is a critical part of our life journey. I gave my power away by asking doctors, psychologists or other professionals to come up with all the answers to “What is wrong here?” I didn’t realize I have the biggest job in finding clues since I have the most direct access to the feedback system. I live in it 24/7! Now I know that peace, sanctuary and clarity do exist. By practicing that state in each Harmonyum session I receive, I can see the progress in my life. I love sharing this practice by making sessions available to others. It is an honor to stand witness for a full hour to another human being’s journey to the center of the soul. We bring back love. We bring back peace. We bring back strength.

Whether you grow lavender in your garden or keep this soothing essential oil at your desk, it’s a sure way to calm the senses and de-stress. TUSHIDA KADAMPA BUDDHIST CENTER

TUSHIDA KADAMPA BUDDHIST CENTER STRIVES TO ACCOMPLISH WORLD PEACE

by Alicia Doyle

WHILE STUDYING ABROAD IN SEVILLE, SPAIN IN 1993, REBECCA GAUTHIER WAS INTRODUCED TO HER FIRST MEDITATION CLASS BY A FRIEND WHO HAD LANDED A JOB TRANSLATING FOR A BUDDHIST MONK.

34

|

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

“He literally dragged me there saying, “You need this!” and he was right,” Gauthier recalled. “Something really clicked with the Buddhist monk’s message and I began seriously studying Buddhism and meditation.”

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful

.

Up to that point Gauthier really believed her pain and suffering had been caused by difficult people or circumstances. “What I learned in that class was to stop blaming and faulting things out there and start changing what is going on in the mind—by developing a more positive outlook—and it really changed my life,” she said. “I felt very empowered and inspired to know that whether I was happy or in pain was up to me,” Gauthier added. “And by learning to control my mind and respond and react to difficult people or circumstances with a positive peaceful mind—I didn’t have to be in pain or suffer. I had never heard anything like it in my life.”

Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center is a non-profit organization run by volunteers where everyone is welcome. “Our mission is to help accomplish world peace,” explained Gauthier, a resident teacher at the center. “It is the Buddhist belief that by cultivating inner peace within our own minds, we can make a greater contribution to the peacefulness of others,” she said. “We are thinking globally but acting locally,” Gauthier explained. “Using the method of meditation, we cultivate inner peace and positivity in our own hearts and minds and then share this experience with others in our family, at work, and our community. In this way, we believe that world peace can be accomplished.”

Rewards of Meditation

The Buddhist Center offers 10 classes a week, including evening classes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, as well as lunchtime meditation five days a week, Monday through Friday. Additional offerings include Sunday Prayers for World Peace from 11 a.m.

to 12:15 p.m., as well as a Kid’s Class that takes place simultaneously. “The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful,” Gauthier said. “If our mind is peaceful then we are free from stress and anxiety, and can experience happiness.” “On the flipside, when our mind is not peaceful, it is very difficult to be happy, even when we have good outer conditions,” she further emphasized. “As we train in meditation, our mind becomes more and more peaceful until eventually we can be happy all the time, even when we are experiencing problems.” The center also offers workshops throughout the year, retreats, and special events including vegetarian potlucks. “It is a great way for likeminded individuals to spend time having fun together and getting to know one another,” Gauthier said. “We have some really fabulous cooks at the center that make delicious vegetarian fare—so our potlucks are pretty legendary.”

Teachings of Buddha Looking back on her life so far, Gauthier said Buddhism has had a profound effect. “It has taught me how to be more patient and present, to cherish others, and not get so caught up in material development— something I think we over-emphasize here in the West,” she said. “We as human beings of course need material things to live,” she continued. “But I also think we under-emphasize spiritual training which, from a Buddhist perspective is simply cultivating positive, peaceful minds such as love, patience, compassion, and wisdom and abandoning negative harmful states of mind such as anger, resentment, jealousy, grasping, and stress.”

Clarity and Inner Peace For Gauthier, the most rewarding aspect of her work is having the opportunity to see people really change on a deep level. “When you do the work—you learn how to control your mind through the method of meditation and induce inner peace within—you are happier, healthier, more present, and calm and you take that experience out into the world and share it,” she said. Over the years, Gauthier has seen people become best friends with their bitter enemies, and bounce back from a bad break-up or divorce with no bitterness or resentment. “Many improve their relationship with their kids so it’s more harmonious, and are more effective at their jobs because they can have a consistent positive attitude,” Gauthier said. People’s physical health is also restored because they learn how to rid stress from their lives. “Miracle after miracle…all because people learn how to control their mind, stop responding to problems in negative, harmful ways and learn how to be more positive and peaceful,” Gauthier said. Above all, the Buddhist center is a place where people can come to learn how to be happy and stop their suffering. “In these difficult times where there is so much suffering and uncertainty, people can seek happiness from a different source, the clarity and inner peace of their own mind,” Gauthier said. BEYOND GREEN LIVING

DE-STRESS YOUR LIFE

DE-STRESS YOUR LIFE PERMANENTLY, WHILE ACCOMPLISHING MORE by Jan Tucker

38

|

CTW MAGAZINE JUNE 2014

WE ALL HAVE STRESS IN OUR LIVES. IT’S A FACT OF LIFE IN TODAY’S WORLD—NOT JUST IN THE U.S. AND NOW IT’S GENERAL KNOWLEDGE THAT STRESS CAN KILL. Hans Selye, an endocrinologist of Hungarian origin, is credited as the pioneer of stress research. He focused on physical stress and showed us in the 1920s that stress impacts our health. Later, John Mason, MD proved that psychological stress is just as much a factor as physical stress.

Our Stress Reaction Prepares us for Fight or Flight Today we understand the biology behind the stress response. The hypothalamus area of our brain detects a stressor and sends a chemical message to the pituitary gland which exports another chemical message through the blood to the adrenal glands (resting on top of our kidneys) to produce and secrete the stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, gives biological instructions to many cells in our body by attaching to its receptors. We always have cortisol in our blood to accomplish our bodily functions. But when stress occurs our cortisol levels increase. In stressful situations cortisol’s purpose is to curb bodily functions that do not help us during fight or flight. It also readies our bodies for damage repair. According to the Mayo Clinic, “[Cortisol] alters immune system responses and suppresses the digestive system, the reproductive system and growth processes. This complex natural alarm system… communicates with regions of your brain that control mood, motivation and fear.” It also increases blood glucose and helps the brain use glucose more efficiently. Adrenaline prepares us for fight or flight by increasing our heart rate and blood pressure and boosting energy supplies.

When Stress Becomes a Problem When we are under constant stress (or perceive we are), our bodies fail to

back down from the stress response and let us return to normal functioning. Instead, the fight or flight response keeps going. This constant barrage of cortisol, adrenaline and other stress hormones wreaks havoc on almost all of our body’s processes. The Mayo Clinic identifies a list of health problems for which this places us at risk: “anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep problems, weight gain and the impairment of memory and concentration.”

You Can and Should De-stress Your Life To maintain our long-term health, it’s crucial that we take a hard look at what is stressing us and see what we can do to manage stress proactively. I am currently writing a book that delves deeply into the issue of stress and how we can empower ourselves to override the habits that have been ingrained in us by our stress-inducing society. It’s called, “De-stress Your Life Permanently (While Accomplishing More).” Freeing yourself from anything negative, whether it is a disease, a habit or a situation, first requires a look at the root cause—an in-depth stress assessment. Where or how did these negative stressors originate? What exact people, situations and thoughts are stressing me personally? Armed with the answers, we have the power to attack stress at the root cause. Our stress comes from two directions. Other people and situations outside of us can cause stress, and we can cause our own stress from the inside. The key is that we have a choice whether to view the things coming at us as stressors or not.

Our Stress Mindset Identifying our stress mindset is a second step. Not everyone reacts to the same stressors in the same way. This provides a clue that we have control over our reactions.

Take the news, for example. One person likes to stay informed by watching as many network news shows as possible. They may not think of it this way, but their psyche is being bombarded by negative, sensational news that affects their sense of security, their faith in humanity and their mood. They begin to view the world from the perspective of society gone wrong. This at first results in subtle changes in the way they interact with others. Later, they might become cynical and negative themselves. Another person may watch the same network news shows, but make a point to remember the news is sensationalized to appeal to the masses. They pick and choose the stories they pay attention to. They also seek other sources of information that help them see positive stories about society. They actively participate in positive events and concerns, giving themselves a sense of empowerment to improve life for themselves and others. A third person, feeling the impact of negative news, might turn away from network news altogether and seek alternative ways to stay informed, thereby lessoning their stress. This example shows how it’s possible to tweak our approach to stress to help reduce its harmful effects in our life. Which person is going to feel more stressed in this example? What alternatives do you have to reduce stress in your own life? Until my book is ready for publication, you are welcome to download a free chapter to get you started on the road to a de-stressed life: www.destresspermanently.com/freechapter.

Jan Tucker is founder of White Lotus Living, whose vision is all about positive thinking, returning to basics, tuning in with nature, unifying the world with compassion, and through all these principles—ultimately—world transformation. It’s about truth. www. whitelotusliving.com is also a place for consumers to learn about and gain access to truly green, natural products. JUNE 2014 CTWMAG.COM
