DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE THE STATE OF THE ART IN 21ST CENTURY DENTISTRY. Decades of research and extraordinarily high success rates have endowed the science of implant dentistry with an excellent reputation. Dental implants have become more predictable, enduring and cost effective than traditional dental solutions and are now possible for virtually any patient, with or without a volume of bone mass, and even for those with a history of systemic disease.

Superior Solution Far superior to removable dentures, dental implants are the new rescue mission for failing teeth. Because they are non-removable, they function like natural teeth, stabilizing the jaw, defying aging, and enhancing both chewing and digestion. Equally important, dental implants provide confidence.

Advanced Training Matters The training of prosthodontists enables them to perform more complex procedures and employ advanced strategies. They envision the function of the final smile in the patient’s mouth even while placing the implants. When the same contractor oversees each step of a new building, it ensures that everything is in the right place at the right time. Similarly, the prosthodontist’s design from implant placement to the final restoration delivers optimum results.

BEFORE

Why a Prosthodontist It is essential to begin the consultation process with a Prosthodontist Whether a patient requires one implant or a complete upper and lower arch restoration, the precise placement of the implant and the positioning of the prosthetic teeth are crucial.

Be an Educated Consumer of Dental Care All dental implants are not created equal! And all procedures are not as predicable as those performed at Anacapa Dental Art institute. Since dental implants are a significant investment in quality of life, it is wise to understand what dental implants are, why the cost of dental implants cannot be reduced without sacrificing quality, and why individualized personal care with long term follow up is critical to the success of any implant procedure.

AFTER

Because the end result should offer maximum dental function, superior esthetics and total comfort, the engineering expertise of this specialist is key to long term satisfaction. A Prosthodontist—which makes up only 2% of dentists in the world—is a dentist who specializes in the cosmetic restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists receive 3 years of additional training after dental school, and restores optimum appearance and function to your smile.

Research shows that patients who don't have teeth struggle with their health and are on a lot more medications. Additionally research shows that people with better smiles have higher paying jobs because of the confidence their smiles give them.

BEFORE

Above all, the mouth is a gateway to the rest of the body; the health of your mouth does have systemic health ramifications. It’s not just about teeth, it’s about overall health. AFTER

FOOD & NUTRITION ISSUE

You Are What You Eat—Really! ANN K. CASTLE FOUNDER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & PUBLISHER

On April 21st, YHC Magazine held its Spring into Health Expo at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza. It was, to say the least, an event to remember! The atmosphere was filled with positive, high energy as attendees engaged in wonderful conversation with the exhibitors to learn about so many modalities to keep us healthy and happy. One exhibitor was Coastal Vascular Center, who provided arterial health screenings. Of course I had to find out where I stand. As I sat down, expected comments and jokes about finding out how healthy the owner of YHC Magazine really is came from different directions. “Let’s see if she is hiding a history of cheeseburgers and fries in those arteries,” said someone. A few chuckles and then concentration as the technician applied a cool jelly on my neck to prepare for the ultrasound. The right side was completely clear of any plaque. Then the left side—the same—completely clear. My gastroenterologist was very happy with me as well when I had my last colonoscopy a few years ago. As I opened my eyes following the procedure, there he was, standing over me with a big smile telling me what a pretty colon I have. Okay—an unusual response— but I’ll take it any time! In this issue, we discover the link between good nutrition and fertility and introduce you to Denise Noyer and the wonderful team at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Clinic; understanding the reasons behind erectile dysfunction; personal stories that brought two women to take separate paths leading to good health; the truth behind genetically engineered salmon; the secrets of Ayurveda; the significant impact on our personal health and the environment, and so much more. There is a lot of truth to the saying, “you are what you eat.” In my case, eating well has kept my system clean and healthy. I guess all those years of dancing, cardio workouts and healthy eating habits are paying off. With Peach, Love Blessings and Gratitude,

“I had the privilege to go to Beijing, China and study for a few weeks,” she recalled. “When I was there, I saw acupuncture and Western medicine integrated together, and that is what inspired me to create Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine.” With that, Noyer-Erez received further training in acupuncture at the International Acupuncture Academy in Beijing, China. EAT MORE AND LOSE WEIGHT

Want to Lose Weight? Then Eat More! By Tsz Ying Amy Lee, MD

The recommendation for females is 20 to 25 grams of fiber per day and for males, 30 to 35 grams per day.

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

It was found that eating more protein was reported by 43 percent of women as a practice to prevent weight gain and was associated with weight loss and increased energy over a two-year period.

That said, it may be a fair assessment that eating regularly or multiple times a day may play a role in the overall caloric expenditure or the calories we burn each day.

Let’s Talk About Breakfast THE PREVALENCE OF OBESITY is increasing annually and more patients are becoming sicker with new onset of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, pain syndromes and even sleep apnea. As these problems progress, so does the push for alternative therapies such as weight loss pills and fad diets. My clients often bring in new pills or supplements for me to review after obtaining them from a friend or hearing about their weight loss benefits on TV or radio. We, as physicians are constantly bombarded with new and novel ingredients and supplements with weak clinical data regarding their efficacies. The fact is, no one has the time to actually understand the basic foundation of nutrition. That’s why fad diets sound great because they require no effort and they are complete with weight loss claims that are too good to be true. Some people even skip meals altogether so they don’t have to deal with taking in the calories. To understand nutrition we first need to understand the physiological functions of the human body and its relationship with macro- and micronutrients. Mechanisms linking meal timing and weight loss are still unknown but current thought is that satiety hormones may be involved. Changes in the levels of circulating satiety hormones such as leptin or ghrelin by circadian misalignment could influence energy intake and expenditure. A Spanish study discovered the presence of an active circadian clock in adipose (fat) tissue.

There is a history and evolution of breakfast. It wasn’t always eaten and it wasn’t until the industrial revolution when the requirement of food intake became crucial because of the energy needed for the workday. Physiologically speaking, the mechanisms for beneficial effects of breakfast consumption come down to the following: • Overall dietary quality such as cereals and oatmeal are lower in calories. • We often eat less volume and fewer calories for breakfast. • Increased meal frequency induces changes in metabolism that may improve risk factors for chronic conditions which can reduce appetite and energy intake. • High fiber breakfast foods blunt postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses and decrease the rate of hypoglycemia between meals. • Hunger prevention leads to less binge eating behavior. • Studies show that people who eat smaller meals throughout the day tend to take in fewer calories and make healthier food choices.

Composition is as Important as the Proportions Clients always ask me what they should and shouldn’t eat. The fact is, you will gain weight no matter what you eat if you eat too much of it. So why not eat for the functionality and understand why we eat the things we eat? Many studies have looked at macronutrients such as protein that play a role in weight maintenance. In a 2013 article in the Journal of Nutrition Education Behavior, it was found that eating more protein was reported by 43 percent of women as a practice to prevent weight gain and was associated with weight loss and increased energy over a two-year period. continued >>

It is recommended that you take in about 20 to 35 percent of your daily caloric intake in fat but you must be careful of the types of fat you consume.

Composition in food is important because certain things such as lean protein can potentially help us burn more calories whereas other things such as simple sugars get stored— especially in our adipose tissues.

Importance of Protein One of the most important macronutrients we should incorporate in each meal is protein. U.S. dietary guidelines recommend that 10 to 35 percent of one’s caloric intake (based on 2000 calories a day) consist of protein. The daily recommendation for an average-sized adult is about 0.8g/kg (body weight)—distributed throughout the many meals one eats. Protein can be in both animal and/or plant form. It is most important to include it in each meal because of the way our body metabolizes it. In the process of metabolism, protein plays a role in thermogenesis, which contributes to our total energy expenditure. This reflects the calories we burn each day. Adequate protein intake at each meal can also contribute to our overall sense of satiety, keeping us more full for a longer time.

Importance of Good Fats Fats aren’t all bad. If anything, fat has been known to slow down digestion—so it keeps us more full longer—like protein. It is recommended that you take in about 20 to 35 percent of your daily caloric intake in fat but you must be careful of the types of fat you consume. The rule of thumb is to eliminate all trans-fat, which plays a role in cardiovascular disease, as well as decreasing saturated fats. These are usually found in red meats, cheese and butter. When we talk about good fats we are talking about the monoand polyunsaturated fats found in red meats, whole milk, olives, avocado, cashews and grapeseed oils to name a few.

Importance of Carbs—Complex Carbs That Is When we think carbohydrates, we think sugar. But we need to understand there are both simple or refined carbs as well as complex carbs, which are packed with fiber, minerals and vitamins. As we grow older, our capacity to handle simple carbohydrates becomes less efficient. Along with a sedentary lifestyle, we are bound to store the sugars we eat. A way to get around this is to replace the refined sugars with complex ones. Besides the added minerals and vitamins, the fiber found in complex carbs plays a huge role in weight loss and maintenance. Fiber not only helps to clear out cholesterol but it helps stabilize your sugars as well as keeping you satiated. The recommendation for females is 20 to 25 grams of fiber per day and for males, 30 to 35 grams per day. Complex carbohydrates are found in grains, oatmeal, fruits and vegetables.

PALEOLITHIC DIET

A true Paleo diet consists of raw, uncontaminated foods.

The Paleo Diet: Eating Like Our Ancestors By Nicole Greenman

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF POPULAR “DIETS” OUT THERE TODAY, WITH ALL THE BOOKS AND MEAL REPLACEMENT BARS TO MATCH. Many of us have tried one if not several and end up crashing or giving up. They require time, research, remembering laundry lists of rules and poor tasting shakes and bars. But what if there was something that was not just a diet, but also a lifestyle, that is as easy to remember as, “What would a caveman eat?” The Paleo Diet, short for Paleolithic, is a movement rapidly gaining attention by all different types of people for many reasons, including weight loss and boosted overall health.

18

|

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

According to founder Dr. Loren Cordain, (thepaleodiet.com), the Paleo Diet is based on the food groups that mimic those eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. There are seven characteristics that define Paleo that are to be followed: higher protein intake, lower carbohydrate intake and lower glycemic index, higher fiber intake, cut trans fats for health Omega-3 fats, higher potassium and lower sodium intake, net dietary alkaline load that balances dietary acid and a higher intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant nutrients.

What are the “rules” of Paleo? The rules of Paleo are straightforward. All foods that have not been through a machine, microwaved or fried are Paleo. A true Paleo diet consists of raw, uncontaminated foods. According to the Paleo Diet wesite, the allowed foods are grassproduced meats, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds and oils such as olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado and coconut. The foods that should be avoided are cereal grains, legumes, dairy, potatoes, processed foods, salt and refined vegetable oils.

Why would a person choose Paleo? The Paleo diet is based on the idea of the freshly killed meats and freshly picked vegetables our ancestors would eat. By leaving fiber and proteins intact to give our bodies the maximum nutrition and health benefits with fewer chemicals and fillers, it is an overall healthier way of eating. According to Dr. Amy Lee of UCLA Health and team physician for CrossFit Ganbatte, “Generally, if all patients could be eating raw with no risk for parasites and bacterial contamination, the Paleo would be an optimal dietary regimen.” With today’s pollutants, fertilizers, pesticides and cross contamination that

So what is the Paleo Diet and how does it work?

The foods that should be avoided are cereal grains, legumes, dairy, potatoes, processed foods, salt and refined vegetable oils.

the meat and fish we eat come into contact with, it is impossible to truly eat an all-raw diet. The most common group of people who abide by and promote the Paleo lifestyle are those who are involved in the exercise movement, CrossFit. CrossFit is a very intensive workout involving a combination of cardio, resistance, functional and core exercise that affects the whole body. By eating Paleo, those participating are able to maintain stable energy throughout the workout and give their bodies the vitamins and nutrients necessary to maximize postworkout repair. Also, those who switch to Paleo experience severe reductions in fat percentages and maintain the lean muscular look favorable among any athlete. With any new diet regimen, it is important to communicate with your primary healthcare provider and/or a registered dietician. Make sure that food allergies and prescription contraindications are addressed first. The constraints of the Paleo Diet is very strict, so many people have developed their own versions allowing for some wiggle room in the rules such as grass-fed meat. The bottom line - if you are considering adopting a Paleo lifestyle is eat what you can gather at your local grocery store or farmer’s market and in season. And, if in doubt remember, if it’s something that caveman could find, you are on the right track.

GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SALMON

Genetically Engineered Salmon Should We Be Concerned?

Market weight for GE salmon is thus reached 50 percent more quickly than with natural salmon.

By Susan Stewart, RN

PLANS ARE WELL UNDERWAY FOR APPROVAL THIS YEAR OF THE FIRST GENETICALLY ENGINEERED (GE) ANIMAL ALLOWED INTO THE U.S. FOOD SUPPLY— AQUADVANTAGE SALMON. In December 2012 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an environmental assessment (EA) of this transgenic salmon, developed by AquaBounty Technologies. AquaBounty’s objective is to apply biotechnology to produce genetically engineered, fast-growing fish that do not exist in nature. The public comment period regarding the introduction of this salmon ended on April 26, 2013 with comments to the FDA from more than 1.8 million people opposing approval. More than 2,000 individual stores nationwide, including Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and other major grocery chains already announced they will not carry GE salmon in their stores. More are anticipated to join this boycott.

20

|

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

FDA Regulation Based On Inappropriate Laws No current U.S. laws specifically govern the production and sale of GE animals. Instead, producers of GE fish must complete a New Animal Drug Application in order to be able to sell it as human food.

Another 35 other species of GE fish are planned— all modified with genes from various organisms, including coral, mice, other fish, bacteria and humans1. If the FDA approves GE salmon, as AquaBounty is confidently anticipating by the end of 2013, it will open the way for a flood of other engineered animals, including pigs, cattle and chickens.

The Technology and Associated Risks AquAdvantage salmon was developed through laboratory insertion of growth hormone genes from Pacific salmon and DNA from ocean eelpout. This created a fish that produces the growth hormone IGF-1 continually rather than just in the summer months which is normal for non-GE salmon. Market weight for GE salmon is thus reached 50 percent more quickly than with natural salmon.

The FDA regulates GE animals as new animal drugs, based on inapplicable laws written well before the advent of genetic engineering7. Animal drug laws were intended to regulate inanimate objects such as feed additives and vaccines, not living organisms that have the ability to move about and reproduce.

Conflicting Findings and Stipulations Undermine Validity of Process The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine determined that AquaBounty’s EA of GE salmon had a finding of no significant impact (FONSI). Yet, looking below the surface, there is considerable evidence to the contrary.

Elevated levels of IGF-1 in humans are associated with increased risk of prostate, breast and colon cancers2. Allergic reactions are another real concern3. A further concern is the routine, intensive use of antibiotics to control diseases often found in industrial fish farms. Eating these fish could lead to allergic reactions or even antibiotic resistance in humans 4,5,6.

FDA Response is Based on Extremely Limited Industry Data The FDA has seen fit to declare these fish safe to eat based solely on data provided by AquaBounty, whose studies were performed on sample sizes of only 6 to 12 fish6. Relying exclusively on industry data is dangerous in itself, but accepting data on a sample size that is not statistically significant is just bad science and irrelevant.

AquaBounty claims only sterile females will be produced in order to prevent extinction risks associated with the escape of GE salmon. However, project specifications submitted to the FDA require only 95 percent of the eggs produced to be sterile. According to The National Academy of Sciences, the release of just 60 GE fish could eventually lead to extinction of the wild population. Wild salmon are already suffering severe declines related to fish farms and other manmade impacts. To calm such fears AquaBounty states their GE fish will be raised in land-based facilities. Because of this, the FDA limited its review to just two small, land-based operations: an egg production facility on Prince Edward Island in Canada, and a grow-out facility in Panama where the fish are raised to market size. By stipulating AquaBounty’s fish will never be produced in the U.S., the company was able to avoid a full environmental impact statement (EIS)8. Interestingly, recently uncovered internal documents9 indicate that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has received an application (during the review period) for AquaBounty to import AquAdvantage salmon eggs into the U.S. for commercial production. continued >>

Agency documents revealed that scientists within FWS questioned the FDA’s ability and authority to review the impact of genetically engineered animals, and that they believe a full EIS should be conducted prior to any decision being finalized. A bipartisan group of Congressional representatives agrees. In April, 2013 Representatives Don Young (R-Alaska), Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Jared Huffman (D-CA) introduced the PEGASUS Act (HR 1667), which would prohibit the shipment, sale, transportation, purchase, possession, or release in the wild of GE salmon unless the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (not the FDA) complete a full EIS, finding that it will result in no significant impact to the environment. A similar bill has been introduced into the Senate (SB 246) by Senators Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski (AK).

NATURAL APPROACH

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Erectile Dysfunction and Other Penis Problems—

What They Can Mean By Dr. Sharon Norling

PENIS IS AN ANATOMICAL TERM—AND, OF COURSE, MUCH MORE—THE PENIS IS A BAROMETER OF A MAN’S HEALTH. While the life-expectancy gap between men and women has decreased, it’s no secret men need to pay more attention to their bodies. They tend to smoke and drink more than women. They don’t seek medical help as often. Some men define themselves by their work, which can add to stress. Erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to achieve or maintain an erection more than 20 percent of the time, can be viewed as a reason for men to pay more attention. When there is trouble down there, there may be trouble elsewhere. ED becomes more common as men age but male sexual dysfunction is not a natural part of aging.

What Causes a Slow Penis? It may mean your blood vessels are clogged from atherosclerosis. It may mean you have nerve damage from diabetes.

1 Medications account for 25 percent of ED. 2 Testosterone declines as men age, beginning around age 35.

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

“ If you have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection you may want to take a look inside your medicine cabinet. Medications account for 25 percent of ED. Medications can create ED, but the medications reflect that you are not in good health and as a result your penis is affected. Medications (the Anti’s): • Antihypertensive drugs. • Antidepressants. • Anti-anxiety medication • Anti-inflammatory drugs. • Muscle relaxants.

Low-testosterone Bob came into my office the same as many other men—his wife made him. Bob was just not himself. Previously the couple had enjoyed a frequent, fulfilling sex life. But during the last year Bob seemed less interested, more tired, and had difficulty having an erection. He had been prescribed Viagra but it was not as effective as both of them wanted. Bob was in good health but he had never had his testosterone checked. When I ordered the lab, the results were 250 ng/dl— below the normal range. After evaluating for other causes that might be contributing to Bob’s symptoms, it was clear his symptoms were due to low-testosterone (Low T). Bob was placed on bio-identical testosterone and the following month he cheerfully reported he was feeling like an 18-year-old and he and his wife were going on their second honeymoon!

Problems with erections may stem from medications, chronic illnesses, hormonal imbalance, mood disorders, poor blood flow to the penis, drinking too much alcohol or being too tired.

One third of men with diabetes have low-testosterone. Men can also have anemia and bone loss. Approximately 20 percent have osteoporosis.

Maybe it’s your age. Or maybe—just maybe you have a medical condition called Low T. According to Dr. Abraham Morgantaler, associate clinical professor of Harvard Medical School, Low T is incredibly common. His book, Testosterone for Life, is filled with information and shows low-testosterone is related to the increase in prostate cancer. I recently heard Morgantaler speak and I recommend his book. Testosterone declines as men age, beginning around age 35. Men with Low T have decreased sexual desire, erectile dysfunction and difficulty achieving orgasm.

Associated Symptoms Men experience fatigue, lack of motivation, mood changes and depression, and may lack motivation. Women tell me, “My husband is so crabby. He never used to be like that.” Physically, men experience a loss in strength and less muscle tone. This is coupled with increased weight and an accumulation of abdominal fat.

Serious Health Problems can Also Occur Could It Be You? Are you tired? Have you lost your edge— your sense of vitality—your mojo? Does sex feel like work, or maybe it doesn’t work out anymore? Is your mood blah? Have you put on weight even though you don’t seem to be eating any more than you ever did?

One third of men with diabetes have low-testosterone. Men can also have anemia and bone loss. Approximately 20 percent have osteoporosis. Recent research shows low-testosterone can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), insulin resistance and increased mortality from CVD and cancer. continued >>

NATURAL APPROACH

...nearly 6,000 cases of sudden death found 0.6 percent happened during sex. Although a small proportion of the total, up to 93 percent of those who died during sex were thought to be engaging in extra-marital sex!

So men, for your health, your sexual activity and your well-being, have your testosterone levels checked and seek the appropriate treatment. Your life depends on it.

Penis Fracture Do you have pain with intercourse? Many problems can cause painful intercourse, including allergy to a contraceptive, anxiety, prostatitis, infection or dryness in the partner. According to the Mayo Clinic, a penis fracture can occur. If the penis is forcefully bent when it is engorged, a fracture of the corpus cavernosum can result in a fracture. The trauma is usually related to aggressive or acrobatic sexual intercourse or, in some cases aggressive masturbation. So handle it with care.

Stress and Heart Attacks Another situation where acrobatic intercourse can occur may actually lead to a cardiac arrest. It is common knowledge that stress plays a major role in symptoms and illnesses. The relationship between stress, heart disease and sudden death has been recognized since antiquity.

26

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

Multiple mainstream medical journals have shown the dangers of Low T. Testosterone below 250ng/dl increases the all-cause mortality (the annual number of deaths in a given age group per the population of that age group) by 2.32 times! The cardiovascular mortality is also more than doubled to 2.56 times the risk. Cancer mortality is more than tripled at 3.46 times the risk.

One of the ways a man can decrease the risk of a heart attack is to have sex with his wife instead of his girlfriend. Scientists have warned that men who cheat on their wives have an increased risk of sudden death from cardiac arrest during sex. This is because they are often with younger women in unfamiliar settings, which adds extra stress. This revelation emerged from a report in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Professor Glenn Levine, from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said autopsy reports of nearly 6,000 cases of sudden death found 0.6 percent happened during sex. Although a small proportion of the total, up to 93 percent of those who died during sex were thought to be engaging in extra-marital sex! (Circulation, 2012). Another recent study found in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, shows that unfaithful men risk not only their marriage but also their cardiac health, and sexual encounters away from home and with younger women are particularly dangerous. The precise reasons for the increase in heart attack death are still unclear, but researchers suggest that a guilty conscience, stress from keeping the affair a secret, and the stress of wining, dining and satisfying a woman who is likely to be younger than the man’s wife could all contribute to the link.

Fitness If you find yourself tired or your sexual activity is compromised by joint pain or muscle stiffness, lab testing for neurotransmitters, anemia, hidden food allergies or toxins may start you a healthier, more active path.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Mayo Clinic’s Signs or Symptoms of a Penis Problem Consult your doctor if you have: • Changes in ejaculation. • Warts, bumps, bleeding, burning, discharge or rashes. • A severely bent penis. What can you do to keep your penis healthy? • Stay healthy. This can be a real motivating factor for men to live a healthy lifestyle. • Be sexually responsible. • Stay physically active.

Did You Know...

• Get tested for underlying health issues. • Know your medications. • Stop smoking and limit alcohol. • Routinely examine your penis. • Use your penis regularly. Frequent sex can decrease ED.

Thinking about starting a family? June is Fertility Awareness Month!

Relationships Relationships are always the key, having a strong component to health and sexual activities. When you are having fun your brain chemistry changes, your energy increases and your overall health improves. Finally—is it true that the size of the penis is related to ethnicity or shoe size? Well, there is research on that, but what’s really important is that the man thinks it is large. Even more important is that the function of the penis is often a reflection of health, well-being and longevity.

“...it takes nearly 10 times the resources to make a meal of animal products versus a vegetarian meal.”

Compassionate Eating Promotes a World Free from Hunger, Disease, Pollution and Suffering By Alicia Doyle

AS THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR OF Compassionate Eating: Conscious Consumption for Mind, Body, Spirit & Planet, Bianca Martinez believes in working toward a world free from hunger, disease, pollution and suffering—and living with respect for the web of life as the key to unlocking our lost connection to the earth and ourselves. “Compassionate eating means eating in a way that does the least harm to our planet, to our bodies and health and to animals,” said the 32-year-old Ventura resident. “It means living with an awareness and deep understanding of how our food choices impact all of these.”

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

Well-balanced, plant-based diets are incredibly nutritious and can reduce—and in some cases even reverse—many of the diseases Westerners face such as heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes.

“People can eat compassionately in many ways,” she said, “from shopping at local farmers markets to eating organic foods— and beyond the food by using eco-friendly dish soaps, cloth napkins and taking reusable bags to the grocery store. …Also by eating foods that don’t create excessive packaging waste, like fast food,” Martinez said. As for her, “I eat a vegan diet for ethical, environmental and health reasons, but I tell people at my lectures and in my book that it is a personal journey.” “Eating a few veggie meals a week or switching from typical store-bought meat that comes mostly from factory farms to eating locally-raised meat does make a difference,” she added. “It can also be a good step toward transitioning to a plant-based diet. It’s better to make changes gradually for your body to adjust. You’ll be more likely to stay with it.”

Positive Benefits One of the many positive benefits of compassionate eating is less pollution. “If more people eat organic foods, the demand will encourage conventional farmers to switch back to methods that use less harmful chemicals, pesticides and GMOs—not to mention less food contamination from runoff into our waterways,” Martinez said. Compassionate eating also promotes less suffering because animals will not have to endure horrific conditions, cruel confinement and painful processing methods. “There is also less illness,” Martinez said. “Well-balanced, plant-based diets are incredibly nutritious and can reduce—and in some cases even reverse—many of the diseases Westerners face such as heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes.”

Early inspiration Born in Newport Beach and raised in Ventura, Martinez grew up eating the typical American diet, including lots of meat and animal products, white rice and white bread. “Like most kids, I loved animals and my folks let me have all kinds of pets when I was little,” she recalled. “I remember I wouldn’t eat animal-shaped cookies and crackers because I thought they would die if I ate them.” Growing up, Martinez learned cooking basics from her mother. “But it was my dad who instilled more of a creative ritual around preparing food,” she said. “We would find exotic cookbooks from around the world with beautiful photographs and try to recreate the dishes with our own unique twists.” Around age 19, Martinez enrolled at Ventura College to study art where she learned about new ideas and lifestyles. “I became a vegetarian after seeing the documentary Diet for a New America with John Robbins.” The film opened her eyes not only to the animal cruelty behind the meat industry, but also the incredible amounts of resources it takes to produce meat—all the water, grain and land. “It’s really incredible; it takes nearly 10 times the resources to make a meal of animal products versus a vegetarian meal,” Martinez said. “It made sense to me to eat in a way that was more sustainable and could feed more people.” Through her own research on the nutritional content of food, Martinez found she could easily get enough protein and nutrients without eating meat. “This eventually led me to learn about different combinations of foods for maximum nutritional value and which foods had healing properties,” said Martinez, who became especially interested in cancer-fighting and immune-boosting foods after learning one of her aunts was diagnosed with cancer. continued >>

BREAKING UP HURTS

Breaking up hurts so bad,

because the body does feel pain By Dawn Michael

MAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2013

A BROKEN HEART FOR MANY PEOPLE IS THE SAME PAIN SENSATION OF GETTING PHYSICALLY HURT. “Breaking up is hard to do,” that statement is more complicated than one may think. Our bodies not only get attracted to another human on a mental level, but a chemical level as well. When that attachment gets broken our bodies will go through a phase of withdrawal. Not only does our mind long for that person, but the loss of the chemical connection literally sends a message to the brain or the brain sends a message to the body that simulates pain. A broken heart for many people is the same pain sensation as getting physically hurt.

When love is lost men are three times more likely to commit suicide, whereas females tend to fall into a state of depression.

Breaking up or being dumped actually heightens the pheromone of passionate love in the brain circuits in both men and women. Withdrawal from this is like being weaned off a drug. That is why physical distance from that person is helpful in the breaking-up process. The breakup triggers our fear of survival in the amygdala, the part of the brain that engages in worry and critical thinking or judgment. That is why some of the strange actions of a love sick person can seem so bizarre. In this state, obsessive thoughts can take over; this is the equivalent of the rush of passion that one may feel in a new relationship. This same process happens in the negative sense over the loss of the person.

When love is lost men are three times more likely to commit suicide, whereas females tend to fall into a state of depression. Rejection, as studied in brain imaging tests, reveals that the same circuits in the brain that triggers physical pain also triggers the same pain over the loss of a loved one. The studies show that the chemical shift from the high activity of active love becomes flat biochemistry of loss and grief. Many times people do not understand that the loss of a marriage or relationship can truly feel like a death. Love can hurt, but it can also be the most wonderful gift, understanding that it is not always a conscious choice. The fact that we end up loving sheds some light on the very complicated feelings of human emotion. We really do love as humans with our mind, body, spirit and our brain chemistry.

Ovulation is an intricate process, requiring months (approximately 120 days) for an egg to mature and be released. Many women don’t realize this and believe that eggs are already there and just waiting to ovulate.

Naturally! By Denise Noyer-Erez, L.Ac., FABORM

FERTILITY PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED FOR 6.1 MILLION WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES. That means one out of six U.S. couples are struggling with trying to have a baby.

What Does the Natural Approach Look Like? When couples come to our office, we first consult with them, in depth, from the Chinese medical perspective. Together we discuss their cycles and history, their diet and lifestyle, and all physical attributes which can and should be addressed through Oriental medicine and acupuncture. We may also suggest they undergo some basic blood work and tests to discover areas which may also benefit from attention from a Western medical doctor. It is very important to have a starting point and to create a path together that incorporates healthy dietary and lifestyle habits along with the acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines. What Could be “Wrong?”

Becoming and staying pregnant seems like it should be as easy as 1-2-3, yet for some couples it does not seem to work like that. Something has gone wrong along the way. If you have been trying to conceive for more than six months, have irregular menstrual cycles, or are having difficulty keeping a pregnancy, it may be time to seek professional help.

One of the most common causes of female infertility is ovulation disorders. Ovulation is an intricate process, requiring months (approximately 120 days) for an egg to mature and be released. Many women don’t realize this and believe that eggs are already there and just waiting to ovulate. Other challenges could involve hormone imbalances, due to various factors, including age or even taking birth control pills for many years. These issues can be treated naturally, through Chinese medicine, for a healthier body and better fertility. This is why it is so crucial to follow a very healthy lifestyle for at least three to four months, before seriously attempting conception, making sure you are taking care of your body, with the correct nutrients and lifestyle, and incorporating alternative natural therapies like acupuncture can be quite helpful at this time.

Did You Know... Buckwheat is not only heartier in taste than whole wheat, but is high in amino acids, potassium, protein, and is gluten –free. Try the organic Japanese Soba noodles instead of regular pasta, or buckwheat flour to replace white flour called for in pancake, waffle or homemade bread recipes. Enjoy!

What About My Husband? One popular myth is that infertility is the woman's problem or an egg quality issue—and that once that problem is fixed or bypassed, the couple will be able to conceive. This can be true, but did you know in nearly 30 percent of all infertility cases, the cause is attributed solely to a male factor? This also applies if you are having difficulty conceiving another child. Many things can change a man’s ability to produce a baby. His sperm can be changed by his overall health and lifestyle. I have seen couples have difficulty trying to conceive their second or third child, believing the challenge was with the woman’s health, only to discover later that her husband’s sperm quality had changed. This created frustration because the woman was doing everything she could to nourish her body and be as healthy as possible, only to discover the other half of the equation was the issue. It really is important for both partners to take action to find ways they can improve their health and ability to produce a healthy child.

Risk Factors Factors that can increase a woman’s infertility: • • • • • • • • •

Age. Smoking. Excess alcohol use. Stress. Poor diet. Athletic training. Being overweight or underweight. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Hormone imbalances such as irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovarian syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency.

Does Age really affect the woman’s ability to conceive? Many women are waiting until their 30s and 40s to have children. In fact, about 20 percent of U.S. women now have their first child after age 35. Age is a growing cause of fertility problems. Factors that can reduce the quality of sperm: • • • • • •

• •

Heavy alcohol use. Drugs. Smoking cigarettes. Age. Environmental toxins, including pesticides and lead. Health problems such as mumps, serious conditions like kidney disease or hormone problems. Medicines. Radiation treatment and chemotherapy.

Some Interesting Facts A baby girl is born with one- to two-million oocytes (eggs). Most of these oocytes gradually degenerate. By puberty they have been reduced to 300,000. You may think that is plenty to last a fertile lifetime. But most of these oocytes degenerate, too. Only 400 eggs are actually released for a potential pregnancy, during a woman’s reproductive life. As a woman gets closer to menopause her eggs degenerate more rapidly. So as age creeps up, even though, as they say, today’s 40s are yesterday’s 20s, there is still a decrease in the number of eggs. Also, blood flow decreases to the reproductive organs so the eggs are not as healthy, resulting in a greater increase in miscarriage. There is Hope!! What can you do to turn back your clock? Nutrition and supplements can make a huge difference. Many studies show supplements such as CoQ-10, L-arginine, and Royal Jelly can impove your health on a cellular level, thereby benefiting your fertility.

By Jan Tucker

MANY PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AYURVEDA—WHAT A MISFORTUNE! Ayurveda, which translates as the science of life, is a vast medical science that helps the body stay healthy or heal in a truly holistic way. It is described as the art of daily living in harmony with the laws of nature. Ayurveda hails from ancient India where it began 5,000 years ago. Many scholars believe it to be the oldest healing system on our planet, according to Vasant Lad, M.A.Sc., a prominent Ayurvedic author, physician, professor and executive director of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque. Ayurveda was passed on by sages who received its concepts during deep meditative states rather than discovery through trial, error and practice. It consists of truly ancient wisdom and was conveyed to practitioners in the form of an oral tradi-

The 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which studied the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the U.S., revealed that more than 200,000 U.S. adults used Ayurvedic medicine in the previous year. Ayurveda is gaining popularity today. Nutrition—the Key to Health An intriguing concept of Ayurveda is the saying, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” Nutrition and the ability of the body to process food correctly is the first concern of an Ayurvedic specialist. The more you learn about natural living, the more this makes total sense. It reminds me of a master gardener’s advice for your vegetable garden—if your soil is healthy, your plants will be healthy and will not be disturbed by pests or disease. Ayurveda is All Encompassing Beyond nutrition, Ayurveda encompasses metaphysical and physical aspects of health and disease, happiness and sorrow, pain and pleasure. It considers each person’s unique body, psyche and constitution based on practical, philosophical and spiritual understanding and

provides an integrated treatment plan for the individual that includes mind, body and spirit. According to Lad, the objective of Ayurveda is to prevent disease in a healthy person and to cure the disease process in an unhealthy person through proper diet, lifestyle, cleansing and rejuvenation. Ayurveda focuses on eliminating the cause(s) of a problem, treating it, rebuilding the body and continuing its rejuvenation. Ayurveda considers that each of us is comprised of the same elements found in the universe and that everything in the universe is joined together. If a person’s mind and body are in harmony, their interaction with the universe will be natural and wholesome. Disease and illness occur when a person is out of harmony with the universe. Your Pulse—a Primary Diagnostic Tool The first thing an Ayurvedic practitioner does is to feel three areas of your pulse using three fingers placed strategically on your wrist in order to determine your dosha, any doshic imbalance, the nature of any disease(s) or illness(es) you might have, and their prognosis. A dosha can be thought of as your constitution or life force. The doshas are based on the five elements, ether (space), air, fire, water and earth. If you are predominantly fire and water, you are pitta. If you are ether and air you

are vata; and if you are earth and water you are kapha. Your constitution can also be a combination of any two or three of the doshas. Each constitution can be described precisely and you can guess what someone’s dominant dosha might be using the descriptions. Someone who is of medium build, fiery, sometimes irritable, and with a probing, intelligent mind might be a pitta. A vata individual has a thin body, tends to walk and talk quickly, likes to multitask and is often restless. A kapha individual tends to be on the heavier side with a large frame. They might walk and talk slowly, have cold clammy skin, and often be calm, loving and full of kindness and forgiveness. Pulse reading is a very precise process where the practitioner physically and intuitively assesses multiple, intricate sensations. It is an art and a science involving objective and subjective concepts, including intuition. As explained in Lad’s book, Secrets of the Pulse, your practitioner will evaluate seven characteristics of your pulse: the type of movement your pulse has, its rate, rhythm, force, tension and volume, temperature, and the consistency of the wall of the artery in your wrist. All of these combine to help him or her determine your dosha and its imbalances. Beyond the dosha, each body organ has a corresponding pulse. An experienced practitioner can identify precise problems with your organs by correct

When Dr. Chaudhary felt my pulse on my first visit, I was taken aback by her first comment—“Your heart has been broken.” I immediately wondered how she knew that from my pulse, and instantly began to contemplate which time she meant. No matter—I was convinced I had found something and someone extremely special and my natural curiosity about the science grew. I now have Lad’s book on my shelf about the pulse. Its 142 pages cover only the highlights of this mystifying technique.

A Proven Non-Drug Treatment for

Depression ...without medication side effects ...right in doctor’s office

Ayurvedic treatments often require changes in diet, lifestyle and habits. Once diagnosed, your treatment might consist of any or all of the following:

translation of the pulse characteristics. For example, a feeble kidney can be detected by feeling the pulse on your left wrist with the proper placement of the practitioner’s ring finger. Lad’s book lists 20 kidney problems that can be determined in this way, from diabetes and hypertension to extreme fatigue or renal failure.

• Daily cleansing using herbs or herbal tea to balance your doshas. • Nutritional instructions including what foods to eat more often and what foods to avoid or decrease in your diet. The aim is for optimal digestibility based on your dosha and any imbalances.

What is Ayurvedic Treatment Like? Imbalances in your dosha and organ pulses are keys to your ailments and your treatment plan. The goal is to bring your body, mind and spirit into its natural balance. The diagnosis goes back to the root of Ayurveda—nutrition. Can your body, in its current state, digest your food properly in order to deliver optimal nutrition to your body cells? If there is an imbalance, once the nature of the imbalance is identified your treatment plan is developed to return you to a more optimally-performing state.

• Panchakarma: periodic cleansing using prescribed foods. • Body massages using specific oils such as sesame, coconut, and a variety of herbs • Exercises, meditation, stressreducing techniques. • Specific Ayurvedic herbal supplements.

Ayurvedic Supplements I requested a local referral to an Ayurvedic practitioner from the vendor who supplies my Ayurvedic supplements and products. Happily they sent me to Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary in La Jolla. It’s worth the 90-minute drive for me to visit her once every few months. She is Dr. Oz’s go-to Ayurvedic specialist and is also a neurologist—a healthy combination of East and West. She is full of light, love and life.

Herbal Ayurvedic supplements are readily available for a multitude of ailments including but not limited to digestion, stress-related issues, sleep problems, allergies, cardiac issues, fatigue and emotional problems, immune issues, toxicity (including that resulting from chemotherapy), men’s and women’s issues, mind and memory, joint problems and respiratory health. continued >>

Purity has been an issue with Ayurvedic supplements regardless of where the ingredients originate. It is important to make certain your source for these supplements has a sophisticated testing process in place in order to ensure purity of the product. The traditional manufacturing process for Ayurvedic supplements is very detailed and intricate. I chose to offer Ayurvedic products formulated by MAPI, which prepares them in the traditional Ayurvedic way using the whole herb rather than the active herbal ingredient. MAPI follows rigorous standards for testing, quality, cleanliness and safety. A council of leading Ayurvedic physicians oversees the formulation and production of each herbal product. Their state of the art manufacturing plants and products are certified by independent agencies including ISO (International Organization for Standardization), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practice). Visit www.whitelotusliving.com and our Beyond Green Blog for more information on MAPI Ayurvedic supplements.
