PUBLISHER’S LETTER

emotiona l w e l l bein g

Emotions in motion This is such an interesting time for many of us. It is not only a time to celebrate the joys of the season and to participate in the festive gatherings to create fond memories, but also to remember the loved ones who have left us. Six years ago, I lost two loved ones six weeks apart and right during the holidays. Thank God for grief counseling or I wouldn’t have made it through Christmas. It was tough, but I was given the tools to handle the many triggers that occurred during that time. I owed it to my family to handle it with grace and love and help them to deal with the loss as well.

Ann K. Castle Founder, Editor-in-Chief & Publisher

This is a time when our emotions are in motion—the holidays have a way of bringing to the surface a flood of memories. As a result, we often experience moments of release in the form of tears or bouts of depression. The holidays also provide that time to be still, be in sacred silence and embrace all that is in your heart. Many of us have never allowed the time to grieve, to remember and to process. It is okay—more than okay—to give ourselves time. This is the natural and healthy process of self-preservation. Without this personal time, we cannot be fully present for our loved ones. Emotional wellbeing is an integral part of the triad of health—mind, body and spirit. This issue addresses the various emotional aspects of our lives and gives us the tools to handle the unexpected triggers, the negative dialog and the most delicate of conversations. To lighten and bring balance to the formula, we introduce Dr. Rajesh Khanna of Khanna Vision Institute, tools for managing stress and an unforgettable vegan feast for the holidays! This season, I wish each and every one of you great joy, peace and love beyond words. Thank you for your ongoing support. You are my gift. Happy & Healthy Holidays! With Peace, Love, Blessings and Gratitude,

Ann

exciting to know that the laser can even break the lens into multiple pieces of desired shape and size. This makes it easier to remove the lens pieces with the least amount of energy.

Blade-free cataract surgery and cornea strengthening through crosslinking are the latest state-of-the-art procedures performed by Dr. Rajesh Khanna, a refractive cataract surgeon and author who recently wrote The Miracle of Pi in Eye. “For one experiencing vision ailments, there are a variety of choices given the use of today’s modern technologies,” said Dr. Khanna, who is recognized as one of the nation’s leading laser vision correction eye surgeons. Common to most of us, is the fear about surgical procedures. “But, if the procedure is comprehensively explained in a calm manner, we can allay a lot of fear and concerns,” he said. “A skilled surgeon, with a good bedside manner, who utilizes the latest technology, and is supported by a warm and caring staff, can make the process quite tolerable.

The procedure is simple and easy. The patient is wheeled into the laser suite. Numbing eye drops are instilled and the eye dilated. A marking pen is used to make orientation marks. The patient is then positioned under the laser. An eye retainer is placed. At this time, the eye does not have to be prepped as this is a non-invasive procedure. Any instillation of drops that sting can prevent eyes from focusing on the light. The patient is asked to look at the blinking red light. Even if vision is obstructed by advanced cataract, patients are able to perceive the direction of this light. The docking mechanism is engaged. The laser works to carry out the instructions programmed. The opening in the lens bag or capsulorhexis is made first. This is followed by the patterned breakup of the lens. It can be cut into 2, 4 or 6 pieces. It may even be chopped into cubes of various sizes like 250 or 500 microns. The center core may be delineated too. The depth of these lenticular cuts can again be controlled. Next, the arcuate incisions for decreasing the astigmatism are made. Either one or two incisions can be made. The length and the distance from the center and the depth of each astigmatic keratotomy incision can be coordinated independently.

Laser cataract surgery

Finally, either one or two side-port openings and the main wound is constructed.

Both precision and safety have increased with the advent of femtosecond lasers for cataract, Prelex and Pi surgeries.

After the laser has done its beautiful work, the patient is taken to the operating room to remove the lens fragments and insertion of the new Pi.

In a painless procedure lasting under two minutes, the laser can make openings in the eye. It can also make relaxing incisions to correct astigmatism.

Cornea cross-linking Dr. Khanna offers cornea cross linking for people diagnosed with keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal gradual curve.

The laser can now make a desiredsize opening of the lens bag. It is

Used worldwide, the procedure has an impressive success rate, preventing vision loss in over 95 percent of patients. “Cross linking utilizes riboflavin and the eye’s natural anchors to strengthen the cornea and prevent the bulging that results in vision loss,” explained Dr. Khanna, who has used his skill and expertise to restore the vision of world-class athletes and well-known celebrities around the world. Khanna is providing a cure for those suffering with keratoconus through Intacs rings segments, cornea transplants and cornea cross linkage. “The procedures offer new hope and vision restoration for those who previously had no other long-term options, and patients have peace of mind knowing the treatment is performed by a pioneer and innovator in the field of sight problems,” Dr. Khanna said. The Miracle of Pi in Eye “This book is based on the premise that, if we can provide an easy to understand, scientific, educational tool, then people may make a rational decision regarding their eyes,” Dr. Khanna said. The book brings two decades of experience of interacting with patients, performing surgeries, and most importantly listening to patients’ concerns, their desires, and their feedback. “This book is targeted for those people above 45 years of age who want to see better at all distances without the use of contacts or glasses,” Dr. Khanna said. Pi in eye is also helpful for people who are currently suffering from cataracts. “Furthermore, it will be a useful guide even if you previously had Lasik, Radial Keratotomy (RK), or any other eye surgery,” he said. “If you are contemplating Lasik or have been turned down for Lasik, this book will be a valuable resource in choosing the best procedure.” This book will also guide readers through the process of selecting a good Pi in eye or Prelex surgeon, as well as provide insight on how to get the best out of your procedure. “A little education and research will 12

go a long way when setting a solid foundation,” Dr. Khanna said. “This book is one such source.” Giving the gift of vision Corbin Bleu first started having eye problems when he was a freshman in high school at age 13. “I couldn’t read the board,” recalled Bleu, who starred in the movie, High School Musical. “I couldn’t really see and got glasses.” For about six more years, he wore daily contacts. “I got up every morning to pop them in; at night I’d take them out … every single day.”

“I can go beyond 20/20 which is actually pretty good.” The procedure was painless, he further emphasized. “I did it without an anesthesiologist; it was 15 to 20 minutes of actual surgery time, an hour of prep,” Patrick recalled. “I was gone, including travel time, four hours.” His experience was so positive, Patrick joked that he’d rather undergo eye surgery with Dr. Khanna than go to the dentist. “The doctor and myself have become quite good friends…sharing this miraculous vision of site,” Patrick said.

After undergoing eye surgery with Dr. Khanna, Bleu’s vision— as well as his overall quality of life— changed. “I get to skip out on a step in the morning and at night; my vision is so much clearer than it ever used to be,” Bleu said. “The vision that I actually have right now after the surgery is better than when I would wear my contacts to perfect my vision,” he further emphasized. “I don’t know how that’s even possible—but I’m looking around, and it is.” Kevin Sorbo, known for his starring role in Hercules, said Dr. Khanna’s Vision Institute is phenomenal after undergoing Lasik on both eyes to treat Pterygium, a red and yellow callus. “It’s very unattractive,” Sorbo said. “It’s for those of us, including myself, who didn’t wear sunglasses enough while I was outside. He removed that and did a fantastic job.” Sorbo recommended anyone with vision needs to seek out Dr. Khanna. “Have him do your eyes… see the world much better than you’re seeing it now.” Butch Patrick, who played Eddie Munster on the CBS sitcom, The Munsters, underwent eye surgery with Dr. Khanna at age 56. “He performed a miraculous surgery on my right eye which was basically blind,” Patrick said. “And my left eye which I did Lasik surgery was sort of getting me by.” Three days after his surgery, Patrick had 20/10 vision in his right eye.

Brenda Song used to say she wanted to wear glasses. “But that’s a total lie,” said the actress known for her roles in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Social Network. When she booked an appointment with Dr. Khanna, he told her she had to stop wearing her contacts for a couple days before surgery. He also told her it was the last time she would have to wear contacts. “I didn’t believe him,” Song recalled. Now, she no longer thinks about her contact lenses, contact box and solution—or her glasses just in case. After surgery, “I looked at my contacts box … and said I don’t need you anymore; I can throw you away.” “You don’t realize how much time it takes out of your day,” Song said. “This was truly life-changing.”

ManageStress to Reduce Aging & Improve Your Health by Jeff Gero, PhD

14

|

ONNECTION.COM december 2013

The foremost researcher and authority on stress, Dr. Hans Selye defined stress as “the rate of wear and tear on the body.” More than 1,200 hormones are released into the bloodstream during the stress response, placing excessive demands on our body. It has been well-documented that prolonged stress with its accompanying emotional strain compromises our immune system which fights off disease. The World Health Organization described stress as a worldwide epidemic, and a United Nations report called job stress the disease of the century. Annually, more than $800 million dollars are spent on anti-anxiety pills.

The Physical Effects of Stress

Symptoms from this stress-related, accelerated aging emerge in the form of skin wrinkles; weakened muscles; diminished hearing, eyesight and cognitive processes and even organ failures.

The U.S. accounts for 5 percent of the world’s population and consumes 33 percent of the pills. Psychological stress not only makes us feel older, but now we have proof that it ages us on a cellular level. Recently, scientists have identified a direct link between stress and aging. In a pioneering study, researchers have shown that chronic stress speeds up the shriveling of the tips of the bundles of genes inside the cells. This not only shortens the life span of the cells, but also deteriorates them. The telomeres are stretches of DNA on the outermost part of the chromosome that have been compared to the plastic tips on shoelaces. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When they get too short, the cell no longer can divide and becomes old, inactive, or dies. This process is associated with aging, cancer, and a higher risk of death. So telomeres also have been compared with a bomb fuse. With increasing age, telomeres naturally shorten. Excessive or prolonged stress increases

inflammation which accelerates the shortening. This has subsequently been linked to age-related diseases, unhealthy lifestyle and decreased longevity. The main culprit in this process is an elevated level of stress hormones such as cortisol. Geneticist, Dr. Richard Cawthon and colleagues at the University of Utah found shorter telomeres are associated with shorter lives. Among people older than 60, those with shorter telomeres were three times more likely to die from heart disease and eight times more likely to die from infectious disease.

Mind/body Response Linked Elissa Epel, a psychiatrist at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), who helped conduct telomere research stated, “This is the first time psychological stress has been linked to a cellular indicator of aging in healthy people.” Towia Libermann, PhD, director of the BIDMC Genomics Center and the report’s co-senior author, adds, “This is the first comprehensive study of how the mind can affect gene expression, linking what has been looked on as a soft science with the hard science of genomics. It is also important because of its focus on gene expression in healthy individuals rather than in disease states.” Further, “If these findings are confirmed, they could provide the first explanation on a cellular level for the well-documented association between psychological stress and increased risk of physical disease, as well as the common perception that unrelenting emotional pressure accelerates the aging process.” Symptoms from this stress-related, accelerated aging emerge in the form of skin wrinkles; weakened muscles; diminished hearing, eyesight and cognitive processes and even organ failures.

ONNECTION.COM december 2013

My own research showed that individuals who meditated often healed from psychosomatic diseases such as headaches, anxiety, asthma and stomach problems. Once they stopped meditating their health problems reappeared. Most of the stress we deal with today is self-generated by our mind in the form of worry, anger, fear of the future, thoughts of negative experiences, relationship challenges, money problems, traffic and so on. Therefore, the more times an individual experiences the stress response and the more prolonged it becomes, the faster our body ages. This recent study has demonstrated that there is no such thing as a separation of mind and body as every molecule in our bodies is responsive to our psychological environment. Staying productive, healthy, and mentally fit depends on how well we manage our stress. By realizing that much of the time our thoughts create the stress response, we can increase this awareness and learn not to focus on and be controlled by stress-producing thoughts. We can also make the time each day to relax, let go of stress, center ourselves, feel peaceful and create the balance we need to live healthy lives.

Steps to Master Stress and Reverse Aging Take the following attitude and behavior steps to reduce stress and aging. 1. Take at least 20 deep breaths a day to release stress. 2. Take breaks, relax or meditate daily to calm your mind. 3. Be proactive not reactive to stress-inducing situations. 4. Practice being in the moment and become the observer of your thoughts. 5. Receive and give love, express your feelings, and trust your intuitive nature. 6. Be willing to forgive and release anger quickly. 7. Lighten up, let go, laugh and have fun. 8. Learn to ride the wave of change. 9. Recognize what causes your stress and develop coping strategies. 10. Follow your joy and that which excites you. 11. Know your limits and learn to say no.

Being the Man You Want to Be In Your Relationships and in Your Life

Get out of the problem and into the solution. Men all want the same things. We want to feel joy and passion, be happy in our relationships, feel of value, and spend our days making money in a way that fulfills us. We want to not be so angry, jealous and resentful, know that we’re good enough as men, fathers and husbands, and we want to feel the confidence necessary to live without doubt and fear.

12. Turn off communication devices periodically. 13. Make time for yourself. 14. Exercise. 15. Develop a positive attitude.

Emotional Wellbeing Tips & Strategies By Dr. Sabira Saifuddin by Andea Gallagher

Mental and emotional wellbeing are essential to overall health. Emotional wellbeing encompasses how you feel about yourself—your ability to successfully manage your feelings as you deal with life’s challenges, and the quality of your relationships. Being emotionally balanced can be a strong contributor to your overall mental and physical health.

Indicators of Emotional Health Being emotionally healthy is more than simply being free from depression, anxiety or other psychological issues. It also refers to having positive characteristics including: • Resiliency in the face of difficulties. • The ability to adapt to change. • A sense of purpose. • A feeling of completeness and contentment. • The ability to create and maintain fulfilling relationships. • A feeling of self-confidence and positive self-esteem. • The ability to have fun and enjoy yourself.

Five Ways to Improve Your Emotional Wellbeing To improve your emotional health, you first must try to recognize your emotions and understand what may be triggering them. Sorting out the causes of sadness, stress and anxiety in your life can help manage your emotional health. 1. Express your feelings in appropriate ways. If feelings of stress, sadness, or anxiety are causing physical problems, keeping these feelings bottled up can make you feel worse. It may be helpful to reach out and ask someone outside the situation—such as a trusted friend, a family doctor, or religious advisor—for support and advice to help you improve your emotional health. 2. Look for balance Try not to obsess about the problems at work, school or home that could lead to negative feelings which result in a feeling of catastrophe. Instead, focus on the positive things in your life and make time for the things you enjoy. You may want to use a journal to keep track of things that make you feel happy or peaceful. You may realize that you have lot to be thankful for. 3. Develop resilience People with resilience are able to cope with stress in healthy ways. Resilience can be learned and strengthened with different strategies such as: • Maintaining a positive view of yourself. • Accepting change. • Keeping things in perspective. • Developing a strong social support network of friends, loved ones and like-minded people. 4. Calm your mind and body Relaxation methods—such as yoga, breathing, stretching and meditation—are useful ways to bring your emotions into balance. Meditation can take many forms. For example, you may come to a relaxing state by quietly sitting on your own, with a spiritual group, or while exercising, reading or listening to music. 5. Take good c are of yourself Physical health is a big contributor to emotional health. To keep your stress levels low, try to get regular physical activity (walk, bike, swim, etc.). To relieve pent-up tension, eat healthy meals that give you good nutrition, and get quality sleep. Also, try to avoid overeating and consuming too much alcohol. If you are following most of the strategies mentioned above and are still struggling emotionally, then it’s time to see a mental health professional.

As your loved one’s dementia grows more severe, you will start to observe several changes. He or she may forget to eat or forget how to complete even the most simple of tasks. Another likely change is that communicating with them will become more difficult. The disease process is largely to account for this. As more of their brain is damaged, they may forget how to speak or how to understand what is being said to them. Since dementia primarily affects older adults, they may also experience age-related declines in vision and hearing that make communication harder. This article provides several suggestions to help you communicate with your loved one at different stages of cognitive impairment.

Remove Distractions It’s difficult for someone who is cognitively impaired to focus on a conversation while the television is on, the phone is ringing or when several other people are talking in the background. You’ll have much better luck getting your message across if you approach the person in a quiet, stress-free environment.

Make Sure You Have Their Attention Some types of dementia can damage peripheral vision or the ability to see things out of the corner of your eye. When you want to speak to your loved one, stand or kneel directly in front of them and make eye contact before speaking. If you are still not sure they are aware of your presence, touch them gently on the hand, shoulder or knee.

If your loved one is struggling with language, you can still connect with them by offering a smile, a friendly arm about the shoulders, or a gentle physical prompt such as handing them the sock you would like them to put on.

purse and meet me in the car.” This much information at one time will only confuse your loved one further. Instead, use simple, short words and introduce no more than one new thought per sentence. In this way, you can lead them along one task at a time. Don’t be discouraged if you have to report each instruction more than once.

Remember the Power of Nonverbal Communication Numerous studies have shown the words we say represent only a small portion of what we actually communicate to another person. Most of our communication consists of facial expressions, posture, gestures and tone of voice. If your loved one is struggling with language, you can still connect with them by offering a smile, a friendly arm about the shoulders, or a gentle physical prompt such as handing them the sock you would like them to put on.

Keep It Simple

When we give someone instructions, we’re used to stuffing several tasks into one sentence. “Finish tying your shoes, get your coat on, grab your

in and try to decipher the message. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch on right away. Also, don’t feel like you have to fix their problems or somehow make everything alright—you can’t. Sometimes quiet compassion is the best response you can offer.

Avoid Arguments People with dementia may develop fixed, untrue beliefs called d elusions. An 85-year-old woman, for instance, might insist she just had lunch with her mother. The best response is to react to the feelings behind the statement. For instance, instead of saying, “Don’t be silly. Your mother is dead,” try saying, “Tell me about your mother,” or “I guess mealtimes around here can get pretty lonely.”

Don’t Draw Attention to Memory Lapses A person with dementia often withdraws into their own private world rather than taking the risk of making an embarrassing mistake in public. You can encourage them to keep making the effort to communicate with others by praising their efforts, even if they use the wrong word or don’t get all the facts right.

Use a Communication Board A communication board is a chalkboard or dry erase board. One side features the ABCs and the numbers one through 10. The other side features sketches of common things people might need such as the toilet, food, water, the television or the nurse. Even if your loved one has forgotten the exact words, chances are good they can still recognize the pictures and point to the things they need for comfort and companionship. 22

Communicating During End-Stage Dementia Dementia is a cruel disease and, ultimately, a fatal one. Eventually, the person with dementia loses almost all of their vocabulary. At this point in the disease process, you may be tempted to stop visiting, convinced there is nothing more you can do to reach your loved one. This is a mistake. Although they may not be able to communicate their thoughts or feelings, they can still be comforted by your familiar presence and voice. You may even be able to spark a memory by singing their favorite songs and hymns, reading passages aloud from a special book, or talking about humorous incidents in your family’s past. You can also connect with them during this time by simply sitting quietly and holding their hand. Remember that touch is also a form of communication.

Communicating with a loved one who has dementia takes creativity and perseverance. Another challenge in providing dementia care is dealing with behavioral issues that may appear in certain phases of the disease process. My next article in this series will examine common behavioral problems and suggest the best ways to deal with them. Some problem behaviors we will look at include repetitive statements and questions, paranoid accusations, outbursts of anger, sexually inappropriate behavior and resistance to physical care. All Pharmacists are not Created Equal Until the early 1960s, going to a pharmacy and getting medication was a much different experience than it is today. In days gone by, pharmacists compounded each prescription by hand, tailoring each one specifically to the needs of the patient.

ONNECTION.COM december 2013

A change came about, however, with the advent of large pharmaceutical companies that created drugs en masse and then distributed them to pharmacies. Though this redistribution method has become standard throughout the U.S., compounding pharmacies still exist. Pharmacists like Navid Vahedi, who owns Fusion RX Compounding Pharmacy in Los Angeles, believes there is more value in compounding drugs by hand. “When everything is made by hand, per patient, per prescription—and therefore each drug is unique to that patient—there are great advantages,” he said. “Let’s say you have taken Advil or an oral anti-inflammatory drug and have experienced an upset stomach and heartburn due to the medication. Well, a compounding pharmacist— knowing you’ve experienced these side effects—can create a topical formulation of that same medicine,” Vahedi explains. “Rather than ingesting the medicine and having it go through your entire body, we create a formulation you can apply topically, thus avoiding unwanted side effects. The new delivery method has a much smaller side-effect profile.” The Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) notes that, through compounding, pharmacists can work to avoid side effects; change a medicine’s taste; accommodate an allergy, sensitivity or aversion to a medicine’s ingredient; alter a medication’s strength; or change the medicine’s delivery method. According to the PCCA, “A compounding pharmacist may be able to provide solutions for challenges such as these. Working closely with the patient and the prescriber, compounding gives the pharmacist the means to customize medication to meet the individual needs of each patient. ...[During] the past few decades, compounding has experienced a renaissance as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more

pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs.” Similarly, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes the benefit of medication tailored to the medical needs of an individual patient, stating that, “pharmacy compounding, if done properly, can serve an important public health need if a patient cannot be treated with an FDA-approved medication.”

A Proven Non-Drug Treatment for

Depression ...without medication side effects ...right in doctor’s office

All pharmacists are licensed to compound, but Vahedi (who has trained extensively with the PCCA) explains there is a big difference between a pharmacist who can compound and an actual compounding pharmacist. “The analogy I like to use is this: any doctor can practice cardiology, but wouldn’t you rather go to the cardiologist?” Vahedi said. To extend the analogy, Vahedi and other compounding pharmacists are cardiologists among general practitioners. “Any pharmacist can compound a prescription under his or her license; however, not all pharmacists take the time to get further training and understand the benefits and techniques of compounding. I’ve walked into a ton of pharmacies that say they can compound, but they do not have the proper facility or equipment to produce a quality product,” Vahedi explained. Vahedi, who created Fusion RX Compounding Pharmacy in 2009, built his pharmacy specifically for compounding—the pharmacy, in fact, only deals in compounding medicine.

There is a rare risk of seizure associated with TMS (1 in 30,000 treatments)

“The entire staff is trained in compounding and the facility is designed and equipped for the sole purpose of compounding,” Vahedi said. “Furthermore, we are currently going through accreditation. We will be the first accredited compounding pharmacy in Los Angeles.”

“It’s amazing how trusting people are,” Vahedi said. “I don’t think people realize what is involved in making a medication. We mix together hundreds of ingredients. You need to be confident in your pharmacy and know they are using the right ingredients and the person making the medicine is doing so properly.”

Vet your Compounding Pharmacist If you’re on the market for a compounding pharmacist, Vahedi recommends that you ask these questions: Are you accredited or are you going through accreditation? What training have you taken? Where do you get your ingredients? Though these are the important questions, Vahedi explains “It’s not about how much you pay,” said Vahed. “It’s about the quality of your medication. You want to work with a pharmacist who understands the treatment option that has been prescribed to you.” Vahedi, who holds a bachelors degree in neuroscience from the University of Los Angeles and a doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Southern Nevada, has a clear goal in mind as he runs Fusion RX Compounding Pharmacy, and that is to “to increase patient and doctor awareness on the benefits of compounding and how it can contribute to the overall health and wellness of a patient. Many people still don’t know or don’t understand what compounding is and my goal is really to educate people.”

Live life feeling your very best.

Be selective about the invitations you accept. What’s in your glass only matters to you. If there is any doubt in your mind about the safety of an event or party, say “no.” Your grandchildren will thank us. Holidays can be the best of times or the worst of times. If you, a family member or a friend have an alcohol or drug problem, these special occasions can be unpredictable. Holidays are a stressful time for anybody, but they are particularly stressful for people in recovery and for families of addicts still using. During the holidays, other factors can compound problems associated with substance abuse and addiction. John Walser, Senior Intake Counselor of the Narconon Freedom Center in Albion, Michigan says, “For many, the season can be one of great joy and happiness. For others, the holidays bring high stress or feelings of loss or depression.” They also can trigger memories of past events that lead to feelings of shame and blame. Many recovering people associate the holidays with memories of overindulgence—perhaps of big benders that resulted in relationship problems or great personal losses. Family gatherings can exacerbate difficult or unhealthy relationships, adding to the anxiety. Drugs and alcohol often are used to escape these feelings. Doing too much or too little during the holidays can be overwhelming. Being separated from loved ones at this special time can lead to sadness. The celebrations of the season may include opportunities or pressure to join others drinking or using. Holidays bring many opportunities to celebrate in excess, which creates tremendous challenges for people with addictions or those trying to hold it together. The time has come to recognize that addiction is no longer to be pushed into the dark corners, stigmatizing the people that suffer from the disease.

Recognizing Addiction Addiction has many faces: sex, gambling, drugs and alcohol to name a few. Sexual addiction is like any other addiction—it is

ily history of substance abuse does not mean that the gene needs to be expressed (activated).

All of us have been impacted at one time or another by addiction either personally or professionally. Maybe it is someone you know, a coworker, a loved one or even yourself. Addiction is an equal-opportunity affliction, affecting people without regard to their economic circumstance, education, race, geography, IQ or any other psychosocial factor. Many of today’s addicts are educated, well-respected individuals such as executives, CEOs, doctors, lawyers, businesspeople, housewives and their beloved family members.

Genes are like light switches—they can be turned on and they can be turned off. However, the vulnerability increases with environmental, social and biochemical, or neurotransmitter imbalances.

How Does Addiction Occur? No single factor determines whether or not a person will become addicted to drugs. Scientists estimate genetic factors account for 40 to 60 percent of a person’s vulnerability to addiction, including the effects of environment on gene expression and function. But just because an individual has a fam-

• People don’t need treatment. They can stop using if they are motivated. • People must want treatment in order for it to be effective.

Handling Addiction During the Holidays Addiction is a chronic illness that can and must be treated. Walser says, “Homes that play host to active addiction are not filled with joy and happiness during the holidays; they are decked out with dysfunction, stress, fear and shame. For families besieged by addiction, the greatest gift they could give their addicted loved one—and themselves—is the gift of recovery.” The good news is, planning ahead can be the key to a joyous, sober holiday season. Good self-care is vital. Be sure to get enough rest. Remember to slow down. Relax your standards and reduce overwhelming demands and responsibilities. Don’t overindulge. Go easy on the holiday sweets and follow a balanced diet. Monitor your intake of caffeine, nicotine and sugar. Exercise regularly to help maintain your energy level amid a busier schedule. Don’t try to do too much. Be selective about the invitations you accept. What’s in your glass only

matters to you. If there is any doubt in your mind about the safety of an event or party, say “no.” Go late and leave early. When everyone around you is having a good time, drinking cocktails or champagne or beer, do you really think it matters what you have the bartender pour in your glass? Chances are it only matters to you. Ask for a tonic and lime; it’s your business and no one else’s. Your time is your own. You don’t owe it to anyone else. Have back-up plans ready. If you’re prepared with a reasonable response, when you’re getting ready to leave a party and someone asks you to stay, you’ll have an easy out, no one’s feelings will be hurt, and you will have been true to your sobriety. Enhance your support system. Holidays are a good time to reach out more frequently to your support systems and fellow recovering people. Find new ways to celebrate. Avoid isolation and spend time with people who are not substance users. Return the holidays to a spiritual base, and stress the power of unselfish giving.

Holiday Tips for Families

Consider IV therapies to add nutrients, detoxify the body, and support brain function (including intravenous phosphatidylcholine). IV therapy has 100 percent absorption with higher doses and is faster acting. Always stay educated about new ways of staying in recovery. Make sure you eat the right foods. Avoid sugar. Relax with meditation and yoga. Use hypnotherapy to support your recovery. Make time to address your spiritual needs. And be sure to enjoy the right exercise. Above all, never, ever give up hope for recovery—it can and does happen every day. Have a healthy, happy holiday.

Dr. Sharon Norling brings a lifetime of education, training and passion in both conventional and natural medicine. For more information on these topics please see her book, Your Doctor Is Wrong. Her practice is in Westlake Village. Call 818.707.9355 or for a free report visit www.aronnorling.com.

Communicate. To avoid any awkwardness, have a direct conversation before the holidays with your family member or friend who is in recovery. Share how proud you are of them and ask if there is anything you can do to make them feel more comfortable and supported. Prepare as a family. Understand that families cannot cure addiction and they cannot control it. It is up to the recovering person to be responsible for their own recovery. But families need to be supportive of the addict or alcoholic. Plan celebrations that do not involve activities that could trigger cravings for drugs or alcohol or any addictive behaviors.

Develop an All-inclusive Treatment Plan Be well. Be happy. Be simple. Be helpful. Be rested. Remember to be aware of the options and support you can give to the addict all year long. Find a team of professionals that treats the whole person and will resonate with your addicted loved one and your whole family. Make sure your family receives support from certified therapists and counselors. See an integrative physician for accurate nutrient-based testing and treatment. Have your neurotransmitters, general chemistry and red cell fatty acid tested at a universitybased laboratory. Balance neurotransmitters, chemistry and essential fatty acids using specific targeted nutrient therapy.

2 ½ cups cooked, pureed butternut squash 1 tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cloves ¼ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp salt ¾ cup cane sugar 8 oz coconut milk (see recipe for Nut-stuffed Portobello Mushrooms) Pie Crust 1 cup flour 6 tbs vegan butter or coconut oil ½ tsp salt 2 tbs shredded coconut 3 tb water Directions Slice your squash in half. Scoop out the seeds (you can roast these with a little oil and salt—super tasty!).

79 March 2014.

Cut the halves into smaller chunks and place in a large pot. Cover completely with water and cook on high heat until the squash is easily pierced with a fork. While that is cooking, start making your pie crust. In a medium bowl, add flour and salt and stir—then add the butter. Work it into the flour with your fingers until it looks like small bread crumbs. Add the water and on a floured surface, work the dough into a ball, kneading for about 5 minutes. Put the dough ball back in the bowl and let it chill in the fridge for a bit. Meanwhile, your squash is probably done, so drain the water and carefully remove the squash skin. Cut the pieces into smaller chunks and put in a blender or food processor and puree. After it’s nice and creamy, measure 2 ½ cups of bright orange vitamin-packed goodness and pour into a mixing bowl. Add the spices, salt, oil, sugar and coconut milk and whisk together well then set aside. Having fun yet? Okay! Take your dough out of the fridge and with a rolling pin, roll out your crust. Carefully lift it into a lightly-greased pie pan and roll/tuck in any extra around the edges. I use a fork to press in along the edge for that fancy crusty look. Then pour the yummy batter in and be sure to lick your fingers and spoons. Bake the pie at 425° for 15 min; then reduce to 350° for another 45 min. After the pie is done, let it cool for about an hour or two before serving.

Who’s Your True Biological Match? by Dawn Michael, MA

36

|

ONNECTION.COM december 2013

A woman can tell if she’s attracted to a man based on his scent. Sexual scent has been studied time and time again. It has been proven that a woman’s keen sense of smell can attract a mate—but most relationships and marriages are not true biological matches. A woman’s body will react to a man’s pheromones if he’s a true biological match for her. Her body will begin to release hormones when in contact with a man she has a natural chemical attraction to. At an unconscious level, the female body understands that this man can produce healthy children.

Putting it to the Test In 1995, a Swiss zoologist named Claus Wedekind ran a test study called The Sweaty T-shirt Experiment. He wanted to test a woman’s sense of smell to male odors. He selected 49 women and 44 men for their variety of MHC (major histocompatibility complex) gene types. The men were given a clean t-shirt and asked to wear it for two nights. The scientist then placed each t-shirt in an individual box (the sniff box). Each woman was asked to smell the shirts. Their task was to sample the odor of seven boxes and describe each odor as to intensity, pleasantness and sexiness. Most of the women preferred the scent of males whose MHC genes were most different from her own. The study explained this is because a woman’s sense of smell helps her to mate with a person she’s not related to biologically. Two people who share a similar genetic makeup and produce children can cause a host of genetic complications.

How Unromantic— Is it All About Biology? Since humans are animals, the natural sexual scent (pheromones) can be powerful, but it’s not always the defining factor in how a woman chooses her mate. Humans don’t

always have sex to breed; in fact, most people have sex for pleasure, intimacy, love and fun. Sexual scent can be masked in order to ensure that the initial attraction is not just based on the way a man smells, but on his personality as well. That’s why cologne is so popular and comes in a variety of different scents. Most people rarely find a true biological match and—in some cases—a man’s scent can even turn a woman off without either of them knowing it. Some pheromone products on the market can also mask a man’s scent, which is not always a bad thing. Also, a man might be a biological match for a woman but not have the mental, social or stability factor she really desires. This is where the animal mind is taken over by the human mind. For some women, the scene may play itself out as lust at first sight, and only later do they realize that sexual attraction was the only factor.

What Does This Mean for Relationships? When it comes to finding a relationship, it helps to understand the difference between the human factor versus the animal smell instinct. Younger women are more prone to going by smell, leading them into relationships that may not be best suited for them. Most of the time, other people can tell that a person is in lust before that person can understand it themselves. As far as dating goes, most people are not going to find their optimal biological match, and in reality, that only matters for mating, not dating! So men, the next time a woman says you smell nice and you’re not wearing cologne, you can bet she likes your scent. The odds of that happening are slim though, so continue taking those showers and wearing your cologne. A great-smelling cologne will score you big points. Filling up the

Well by Denise Schriedel

Simply put, if our wells are depleted we have little or nothing to give. I use that term metaphorically since our “well” is our “being.” What are we doing to fill our well to help nurture our souls, our minds and our bodies? Do we take time each day to meditate or read inspiring books, recite an affirmation or listen to a CD that uplifts our spirit? These are necessary activities do help fill the well, both spiritually and emotionally. Each day we give so much of ourselves to the world, to our families, children, employers, relationships, friends, social activities, business functions, etc. We have busy lives. In order to FEEL that these life experiences are fulfilling, rewarding and worthy of our time and energy, it is crucial to take time out for ourselves. That’s often easier said than done. During the past year I have spent countless hours, days and weeks nurturing my soul through a weekly meditation class, surrounding myself with like-minded people, reading numerous books on self-improvement and taking myself on creative excursions. This spiritual path has taken me to the next level, gaining knowledge about myself and others, and learning to love myself first. Knowing this allows me to share insights with others and offer my gifts, skills and talents to help humanity. I do this by sharing stories, listening to others who are struggling with personal

Life

The Time of Your by Patty O’Sullivan, PhD

My favorite holiday pin is a quote from Art Buchwald, American humorist: “The best things in life aren’t things.” For me, it is a gentle reminder of what really matters— and that is the people in my life. Let’s face it, we live in a material world and nowhere does the emphasis on things show up more than this time of the year. Neon lights, intending to get us to buy, blink everywhere. Manic emotions lead to unbridled spending. The hustle becomes the hassle. Whether it is eight days of gifts or one day of eight gifts, the focus is on things.

What Matters to Kids

Imagine shifting our spending habits to the gifts money can’t buy. It may surprise you to know that kids value meaning over money and relationships over things, even though they may not verbalize it. In working with families, the most pressing challenge to their relationships is not money. It is time—specifically not enough time to connect.

Belonging is critical to emotional wellbeing. Your children want to know they belong to you by more than sharing a last name. It’s not about living under one roof as much as living in each others’ hearts. To do this takes time and a willingness to communicate.

Time is a currency. We spend it, waste it, donate it and invest it. Like our finances, we seem to come up short of time. Spending time with our children (face-to-face, eye-toeye, heart-to-heart) is an investment

in their emotional wellbeing savings account. Invest every day. What? Interrupt texting, video games and Facebook time? Yes. Their nonverbal, social media world with friends is ever-changing. They want to know they can count on you to be the parent, not a BFF (best friend forever). An investment can be banked in small chunks. Five minutes of uninterrupted time to check in, not as the grand inquisitor, but as a loving, caring parent, is a welcomed investment. What happens when we don’t connect?

The Zombie Zone

Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. These are skills children need in order to be successful. 1. Becoming Self-Aware—Knowing their feelings and how to use them as a guide. 2. Self- Regulating—Managing their emotions. 3. Motivating themselves—Having the personal drive to achieve a goal. 4. Being empathetic—Recognizing and understanding other people’s emotions. 5. Social Skills—Managing relationships and dealing with conflict.

If you aren’t making regular deposits into your children’s emotional bank account, you may not notice they are morphing into the walking dead. Although their wiring to social media consumes their every waking and sometimes sleeping hour, communicating in person continues to be a basic for building real life relationships.

A Sense-ational Life Creating Emotional Wealth

Yet our kids don’t know how to do this. It is a real concern that teens do not have the vocabulary to voice their feelings or to understand how their words and actions affect others. There are no innocent bystanders in Zombieland. You either act or get eaten.

Make time to:

Being Real—A Call to Action A threat to survival is the level of emotional poverty our children are experiencing due to the lack of positive interaction with parents, peers and teachers in a way that allows them to try on acceptable ways of identifying and expressing emotions. In recent years, Daniel Goleman’s work on EQ (emotional intelligence quotient—how we manage ourselves, our relationships, our emotions and our challenges), has found its way into our schools. Little by little our children are learning ways to be successful in their school life and in the future. Following is the description of Goleman’s 5 EQ domains from his book, Emotional Intelligence:

Goleman’s research shows that most corporations and organizations are hiring more on EQ than IQ.

Our senses are the most natural and profound ways to give and receive information. Following are suggestions for increasing the emotional richness of your family life all year long.

• See what is going right. Let your children know you notice their positive behaviors and contributions. This layers success. • Hear what your child is saying. Listen without judging or preaching. It’s the most validating gift you can give them. Peggy O’Mara, former publisher and editor of Mothering magazine said, “The way we talk to our children becomes their inner voice.” • Smell the roses. It is important for children to see that you care for yourself. • Taste homemade treats by spending time in the kitchen. • Touch with tenderness. Hugs are free, so be plentiful. We can promote emotional wealth and health by singing, dancing, laughing, being silly and playing

together. The kids weigh in with what they want to hear. You are encouraged to add your own ideas and to sprinkle generously: I love you! I believe in you! You can do it! I’m proud of you! I value you. You are important to me. It is a wonderful idea. You are strong enough to get through this. You’re beautiful! I’m here for you. What do you want? You are capable. Don’t give up! You mean a lot to me. You are kind. You are amazing! You rock! The holidays are a time of light, hope and miracles. Be that for your children. After all, they are the time of your life. Oneness

Something Significant to Ponder by Jan Tucker

Thinking about oneness— should you decide to accept the challenge—could keep you occupied for a lifetime. Have you ever heard the concept that all is one? That everything—not just people, but everything we experience with our five senses and beyond is connected—inseparable—and that God is included in this view of our united universe?

I have been a serious student of yoga for more than a decade and this concept has fascinated and mystified me since the first time I heard it. Sometimes I discuss Eastern theory with my husband, who is well connected, but silent about his spiritual views. The conversation usually consists of me talking about some concept I am excited about— like this subject, for instance—and him giving me a look of doubt.

Those whose consciousness rests in truth are the most at peace with themselves and the world. It is an emotionally satisfying, reassuring experience to live one’s life knowing, understanding, and having faith in truth.

Recently we watched a show by one of favorite scientists, Stephen Hawking, in which “Dr. Pedro Ferreira describes an atom, suggesting they are more like force fields and waves, rather than mass…they can be in more than one place at a time.” (science. discovery.com/video-topics/spacevideos/master-of-the-universestephen-hawking-atoms.htm) “Aha!” I exclaimed, “Science is finally beginning to catch up with the ancient rishis (Hindu scholars and seers who discovered these truths five thousand years ago.).” That wasn’t the first time this happened. I love it when science discovers truths the rishis have known for millenniums and are still being revealed to spiritual seekers today. As science advances, this is becoming much more common.

Why Would You Want to Think about Oneness? It’s a stretch to think about this concept, but if you are curious enough to ponder it, you might be a truth seeker. Those whose consciousness rests in truth are the most at peace with themselves and the world. It is an emotionally satisfying, reassuring experience to live one’s life knowing, understanding, and having faith in truth.

Do you ever wonder if what you see and experience is all there is? Oneness doesn’t involve our five senses—it’s well outside of them. Just because we can’t fathom that we and the person with whom we are speaking look, feel and sound like two different people, doesn’t make the theory of oneness false.

Anecdotal Evidence of Oneness I began seeking spiritually at an emotional low point while pondering the reason for my existence. I distinctly remember saying to myself, on a lonely walk, “If I have a soul, then I want to know that soul today—why should I have to wait until I die to discover who I really am?” I wanted to know how to connect with my soul. It didn’t seem fair that I couldn’t do it. Almost immediately, a series of events led me to meet a yogi—a complete stranger who, on the day we met, intuited my ending love relationship. Out of the blue this yogi told me a story about another woman in my same situation. When he was finished, I remember wondering—but believing it wasn’t possible—if he was really talking about me. Her story was exactly like mine. After I studied yoga and meditation with him for a few months, I learned he had been talking about me. To make his point, he knew it was easier for me to see what I should do by viewing my situation from the outside. I was able to realize I needed to let go of that relationship by picturing someone else in the same situation. How did he know my story? How can it be that certain gifted people are able to see into your future and predict, with great accuracy, what will happen in certain instances? How is it that you think of a friend december 2013

you haven’t seen for quite awhile and suddenly they call you? How do many people who are about to die know when it is going to happen, enabling them to plan accordingly? How do people in different parts of the globe come up with the exact same scientific invention at the same time? A myriad of examples like this exist that can easily be explained if oneness is true.

Scientific Evidence of Oneness In his recent book, 7 Billion Minds, or One?, Dr. Larry Dossey explained that “One Mind…is based on human experience and actual scientific experiments.” He says, “The emerging image of mind is that it cannot be put in a box (or brain) and walled off from all other minds. If minds are boundless and boundaryless, as evidence suggests, in some sense all minds connect.” My husband drew my attention to an article in the August 2013 issue of Scientific American (he’s beginning to believe). Entitled, What is Real?, this fascinating article by Meinard Kuhlmann, degreed in both physics and philosophy, explains that the structures used by quantum physicists such as the fundamental building blocks of matter—subatomic particles, electrons—the things we learned about in biology class—are not real, physical entities. Neither is the quantum field. Kuhlmann says, “…some philosophers of physics…suggest the most basic constituents of the material world are intangible entities… . that everything 44

|

ONNECTION.COM december 2013

can be reduced to intangibles alone, without any reference to individual things. It is a counterintuitive and revolutionary idea, but some argue that physics is forcing it on us.” He further explained, “…scientific theories are meant to represent the world…theories are only instruments for making experimental predictions.” Kuhlmann believes physics and philosophy must work together to explain the physical world. “Metaphysical thinking guided Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.” The article concludes, “Some researches think that the world, at root, does not consist of material things but of relations or of properties, such as mass, charge and spin.” Edison and Einstein, among other prominent scientists, revealed to us that they tapped into universal consciousness to obtain their ideas and solutions. Edison said, “I am only a plate on a record or a receiving apparatus… . Thoughts are really impressions we get from outside.” Dossey said, “…individuality is only one side of the human coin. Neglecting the coin’s other side, our collective unity, is a recipe for disaster nationally and globally, because the epidemic of selfishness and greed that has been unleashed by this unbalanced view of human nature is threatening not only our social structure, but the larger ecoenvironmental fabric and life-support systems that sustain us.” Yoga teaches that we are not separate from God. We are souls who return again and again to this earth

(through reincarnation) to work out lessons which, once we conquer, will eventually lead to our perfection and our return to the oneness from whence we came. Life as we know it is just an illusion of separateness. Our real identity is our soul which is connected with all. Oneness is a concept we can’t expect to grasp with limited knowledge of things unseen. We have neither the words nor the understanding to describe it. Once we experience it, we will have arrived. Many seekers on this earth throughout the ages have experienced it first hand—it’s called enlightenment. Emotional stability is a healthy long-term goal if you want to be more stress- and anxiety-free, and to be physically healthier. We know our thoughts and emotions affect our physical health. We can make ourselves sick and with determination, positive thinking, better nutrition and right living, we can return ourselves to health. Exploring for truths and finding your own truth will help you find more peace within, balancing your life.

Coin Lithium Battery Safety: Know the Facts Coin lithium batteries can be found around most homes in everyday items like remote controls, keyless entry devices for your car, flameless candles, sound-enabled books and greeting cards, and a variety of health and fitness devices. If a 20 millimeter coin lithium battery is swallowed by a small child, it can get caught in the esophagus. The battery will react with saliva and cause a chemical reaction that can lead to severe injuries in as little as two hours. Unfortunately many parents do not know about this issue. In a recent survey, 62 percent of parents reported being unaware of the risk associated with coin lithium batteries.
