WELCOME

to YHA Australia.

Discover Australia with the hostel network that delivers quality, fun and affordable accommodation all around the country.

Your stay

YHA hostels are made for travellers, so our hostels include all the things that make you feel more at home, including friendly and local staff, fully equipped kitchens, clean rooms, comfortable beds, and spotless and spacious bathroom facilities.

Good times included

All of our hostels have fun social areas, comfy lounge rooms, televisions, board games and more. Many of our hostels also include extra treats like swimming pools, social events, 24-hour reception and movie rooms.

Booking

Our staff are happy to book your next hostel. Also, you can book our hostels via yha.com.au up to nine months in advance. Because we are popular places to stay we recommend that you book in advance, as many hostels are fully booked during busy periods. Length of stay may be limited to 14 days, but can be extended at the hostel manager’s discretion.

Check-in

As no two hostels are the same, check your destination hostel’s reception opening hours in the guide. If you plan to arrive early or late, let us know in advance so we can arrange things for your arrival.

01-025_Editorial_V2.indd 5

You’ll need to provide photo ID, or if this is not available, sufficient alternative authentication of identity.

Bedtime

To make your stay easy, all YHAs provide linen, blankets and pillows free of charge (except for Wilderness Hostels). You can bring your own linen if you prefer, but sleeping bags are prohibited due to Australian health regulations. You will need to bring a towel.

Age limits

YHA welcomes solo travellers, groups and families of all ages. n If you are 16 or under you will need a parent/legal guardian aged over 21 to stay with you in a private room. n If you are 17 you can stay unaccompanied if you have a letter from your parent/legal guardian stating that they are aware you are staying at the hostel and that the hostel will not supervise your activities. n Children under two stay for free – lucky things. However, please check with the hostel before you arrive or make a booking, as a few of our hostels aren’t equipped for youngsters.

THE HI QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

HI-Q, Hostelling International’s Quality Management System, focuses on hostel management and operations. It takes ‘best practice’ from quality systems around the world and tailors them to the specific needs of hostels. HI-Q enables hostels to consistently improve and deliver high standards to ensure you have a great hostel experience. HI-Q is a long-term

program that is now being implemented in HI hostels around the world. Only those hostels which successfully complete the program are certified and able to display the distinctive HI-Q logo – look out for the logo on hostels in this guide.

SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

YHA.COM.AU /SUSTAINABILITY

YHA Australia is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and raising awareness of the benefits of low-impact travel. Every night you spend in a hostel creates an average of 9 kilograms of carbon emissions. YHA’s Sustainable Hostel Fund assists with ecoprojects in hostels to reduce emissions and energy use. Any savings go back into the scheme to purchase or generate other renewable energy sources. There are several green YHA hostels in the Australian network, including hostels at Alice Springs, Apollo Bay, The Grampians, Port Douglas, Melbourne and the Blue Mountains.

WHAT YOU CAN DO Save energy

Water conservation

Rubbish

Water conservation is extremely important in a drought-stricken country like Australia, and we ask you to take care with our scarce resource. Take shorter showers and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing dishes.

One of the easiest things you can do to help the environment is say no to plastic bags. Purchase a YHA Enviro bag at reception, if available, to use when shopping. Use biodegradable soaps and laundry powders. Take your rubbish with you, and if you’re a smoker, always bin your butts.

Respect our animals and keep at a safe distance at all times. A lot of Australia’s wildlife is at risk of extinction and all native animals are protected by law.

TOURISM AUSTRALIA

Always turn off the lights, airconditioning or heating when you leave your room, and don’t leave things charging all night. Switch off appliances when you’re finished, and wash clothes in cold water. If you’re cold, put on warm clothes. If it’s hot, open the window.

This publication is printed using a wide range of environmentally friendly material to minimise its carbon footprint.

New South WALES Cities, surf, mountains, adventure...

From Sydney Harbour to the outback – no other state combines surf beaches, rainforests, rugged bushland, snow-capped mountains, big rivers and the colours of the outback like New South Wales.

Sydney Famous for its harbour, beaches, and great city events, Sydney offers eight YHAs to choose from. Sydney Harbour YHA, in the historic Rocks area, is close to the water, Opera House and harbour. Multi-award-winning Sydney Central YHA and Railway Square YHA are in the heart of the city,

right next to the city’s transport hub – Central Station. Enjoy the vibrant village life at Glebe Point YHA, among the inner-city suburb’s trendy cafés and pubs. If you want to visit Sydney’s beaches, choose from Sydney Beachouse YHA at Collaroy on the Northern Beaches, Bondi Beachouse YHA in the east and Cronulla Beach YHA in Sydney’s south.

Short Getaways

The Blue Mountains

On the city’s northern edge, Pittwater YHA is nestled amid Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Two hours south, Bundanoon YHA has all the adventure activities of the Southern Highlands on its doorstep. For a complete getaway, check out the eco-YHA at Hawkesbury Heights, or visit Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, home to spectacular walks, abseiling, canyoning and caving. Vineyards and fancy food will tempt you to the Hunter Valley.

All Prices advertised are based on average YHA member rates. See yha.com.au for current prices and seasonal variations.

South Coast Kickstart your south coast adventure in the vibrant uni town of Wollongong, before discovering the seafood, water sports and kangaroos of Batemans Bay. From here, it’s not far to the unspoiled beaches and marine life of Narooma and holiday favourite Merimbula.

DAN BRECKWOLD, SHUTTERSTOCK, AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TOURISM

Pacific Coast Historic Newcastle is famous for its stunning surf beaches and growing backpacker scene. Get back to nature at Port Stephens, an area of endless bays, beaches and giant sand dunes. Stop off in Port Macquarie for a surf, camel ride and visit to the Koala Hospital. Further up the coast your action-packed Coffs Harbour adventure awaits. Detour inland to Bellingen, for cafés and crafts, moonlit canoeing and Dorrigo Rainforest. Yamba offers the best of ocean and river activities, plus yearround festivals. Lennox Head is a wonderful place to relax on the beach or try sailing on Lake Ainsworth. Byron Bay, Australia’s most easterly point, is known for its beaches and laid-back lifestyle.

CANBERRA FESTIVAL

Canberra & surrounds Canberra, Australia’s capital city, boasts the country’s largest number of free attractions, plus loads of entertainment and festivals. South of Canberra, Thredbo alpine village, in the Snowy Mountains, is your gateway to Australia’s highest peak. Hike Mt Kosciuszko in summer or ski in winter. Further south, you’ll find the riverside border city of Albury.

Relax at Nimbin, an alternative town with quirky shops and markets. Or, climb Mt Warning from the serene riverside town of Murwillumbah.

Country detours Visit Tamworth, Australia’s country music capital and take part in a jackaroo/ jillaroo course. Halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, Armidale is known for its waterfalls, autumn colours and national parks.

POSTCARDS FROM NORTHERN TERRITORY

Selim El Mellah, France

Best night out Camping near Uluru; lying in swaggs, looking up at the stars. Great dinner The Lucky Cow, Darwin. It’s dedicated to vegetables and cheese and of course try some crocodile or emu meat. Amazing experience The six-metre saltwater crocodile we saw in Margaret River. A scary moment but a really good souvenir. Something I didn’t know I saw thousands of termite houses in Kakadu, some up to seven meters high and 60 years old. Best way to spend $25 Go to Kakadu National Park (entry fee is $25), it’s terrific. Travel tip If you want to swim in a free thermal pool go to Mataranka or the hot springs in Katherine. Don’t miss The Rock Tour (Uluru; KataTjuta, Kings Canyon) and Kakadu.

Best night out Airlie Beach; a night on a yacht in the middle of the ocean. A great place to watch the sunset. Amazing Queensland experience I went to Whitehaven Beach on a really sunny day. It was so beautiful. A pleasant surprise The tours were so great and they showed me many different ways to experience Queensland. The tour information was so easy to find and book with YHA because the YHA staff are very knowledgeable. Queensland in three words Best. Travel. Ever. Don’t miss The Whitsunday Islands. Make sure you stay as long as you can to do lots of tours, and really feel the nature of the place.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA For those who like to travel somewhere extraordinary.

Head to South Australia for an experience that’s all about contrasts: rich wine regions, long sandy white beaches and great festivals. It’s also the gateway to the reddest sands and outlandish towns of the outback.

ADELAIDE Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, home to more than 1.2 million people. It’s an attractive coastal destination with a Mediterranean climate and a cosmopolitan, outdoor lifestyle to match. With inviting sandy white beaches to one side and the picturesque Adelaide Hills on the other, the city boasts lush green parklands, busy city squares and a lively café scene. Revel in an abundance of varying arts,

Flinders Ranges

music and culinary festivals and sporting events throughout the year, including the internationally renowned Womadelaide and Adelaide Fringe festivals. Taste the fresh produce at the Adelaide Central Market and Chinatown, take in the galleries and museums, bike along the River Torrens to Glenelg Beach or see the giant pandas at the zoo.

adelaide hills & barossa valley In the Barossa Valley, a one-hour drive from Adelaide, you can visit quaint art galleries and worldclass vineyards such as Penfolds and Jacob’s Creek, while enjoying the region’s gorgeous landscape, and gourmet wining and dining. The Adelaide Hills has many wineries dotted among market gardens and orchards. Bike Mount Lofty, hike the Heysen Trail, enjoy panoramic city views from the summit, visit the German town of Hahndorf or hold a koala at Cleland Wildlife Park.

Eyre Peninsula

Discover ancient gorges, sheltered creek beds, spectacular rocky outcrops and the towering gum trees of the Flinders Ranges. South Australia’s largest mountain range is a dramatic landscape with impressive geographical formations. A grand amphitheatre, Wilpena Pound is a vast and ancient land of startling colours and unique wildlife, with many hiking trails to follow for stunning views and sunsets.

See the Australian outback on the Eyre Peninsula. Over 2000 km of magnificent coastline makes for memorable drives and perfect ocean adventures. Swim with seals, dolphins and tuna; cage dive with great white sharks at Port Lincoln; or travel to Port Kenny on Venus Bay for huge surf, the rugged rocky cliffs of the Great Australian Bight, limestone caves, arid desert and whale watching experiences.

FLEURIEU PENINSULA & KANGAROO ISLAND

along the coast, walk the clifftop trails and swim at Horseshoe Bay. A much larger island than expected, Kangaroo Island is 150 km long. With pristine wilderness, dense forest, wetlands, sand dunes and gastronomic delights it’s truly unique. The island is a sanctuary to the pure strain Ligurian bees, so there is quality honey to try. Ferry to the island from Cape Jervis to see kangaroos, koalas, little penguins, sea-lions, black swans and echidnas. Also explore the impressive soaring cliffs, eucalypt forests, Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay and the famous Remarkable Rocks.

South of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula is prized for its wineries and fresh produce. Home to world-renowned McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek wine regions, there are cellar doors throughout the countryside for wine and produce tastings. Travel further south for miles of amazing coastline, beaches, ideal surfing, fishing, abundant wildlife and seasonal whale watching in the charming town of Port Elliot. Bike

POSTCARDS FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA Best wildlife Kangaroo Island is a zoo with no fences. It is an incredible example of wildlife and people co-existing in a small self-contained ecosystem. You can see koalas, roos, sea lions, dolphins, and wallabies. Favourite wildlife moment Swimming with sea lions off the coast of Hopkins Island, about an hour’s boat ride from Port Lincoln. The sea lions are incredibly curious and will play with you. It is the most interactive wildlife experience I have ever had. Something I didn’t know I wasn’t aware of the diversity; salt flats on Lake Gairdner, the majesty of the Flinders Ranges, the quirky Coober Pedy, the expansive Eyre Penninsula. South Australia in three words A hidden gem. Best place for nature The Flinders Ranges. The openness, the stillness, the silence, the power.

An amazing experience Exploring the McLaren Vale wineries; eating huge platters of locally sourced food, sipping the wines, in the most gorgeous scenery. Something I didn’t know South Australia has the most amazing seafood. Try Coffin Bay oysters at Del Giorno’s in Port Lincoln. South Australia in three words Beautiful. Tasty. Exciting. Travel tip After a long day exploring, stay in a YHA hostel; it’s a real treat to come back to a nice room and bed. All the YHAs I stayed in were of a high standard. Don’t miss Shark cage diving in Port Lincoln, and try and fit in swimming with the Bluefin tuna. Anything else I had the most amazing time in SA, in just a week. The scenery, food and company were amazing, I can’t wait to come back.

TASMANIA

An island rich in wilderness, history and beauty.

Tasmania is an island of spectacular contrasts – vibrant cities and country villages, ancient forests and towering sea cliffs, delicious food and cool-climate wines, heritage and culture, and unique wildlife and wilderness.

Hobart is a city of sails, sandstone and sunshine – a place that combines a rich colonial past with contemporary art and culture, and a place that has all the attractions of a state capital, wrapped up in a friendly, accessible, pocket-sized city. Convict-built warehouses which look down on the bustle and fun of Salamanca Market (held each Saturday) are home to boutiques, restaurants, artists’ studios and galleries. Based at Montgomery’s YHA you can do what the locals do and enjoy the Salamanca Market, then explore the historic waterfront and nearby Battery Point precinct. MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, a short ferry ride from the city, is a world-class, multi-storey gallery that looks over the majestic Derwent River and shouldn’t be missed. To the south of the city lies the Huon Valley, famous for its waterways and wilderness. Here you can venture on the popular Huon Trail and enjoy the unique

history, crafts, food and wine of the region. Visit the Tahune Airwalk and underground wonders of Hastings Caves, where close by you can take a dip or a swim year round in the naturally heated thermal pool. Port Arthur historic site is 70 minutes from Hobart. A former convict settlement, the site is one of Australia’s most significant heritage areas. Take a guided walking tour, cruise the serene harbour and visit the open-air museum. Also close by to Hobart is Mount Field National Park, where you can walk to Russell Falls and witness the spectacular cascading stream of white water among the swamp gums, as some of the world’s tallest trees tower above you.

WINEGLASS BAY

NORTH-EAST & THE SUNCOAST The Suncoast boasts magnificent coastal scenery, which is a picture-perfect backdrop to deserted white sandy beaches while walking or swimming. Coles Bay with its rugged and beautiful Freycinet Peninsula is one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. Here you will discover picturesque Wineglass Bay, voted one of the world’s most stunning beaches, with its wellformed walking track through granite outcrops. The fishing port of St Helens has a relaxed atmosphere and pretty places to unwind. Then travel north-west to Bridport, another seaside village, where you can explore the river by canoe or visit the nearby lavender farm. Tasmanian Devil

North-west & West

Deloraine is a charming town situated on the Meander River, and is classified by the National Trust as a site of historical significance. Further north is the sea gateway into Tasmania, Devonport, where you can enjoy the excellent cycling tracks along the foreshore between the city and the Don River. Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Spend a day or a week hiking through soaring mountains, deep gorges, lakes, tarns and wide open moorlands. Strahan is a quaint fishing village situated in a sheltered nook of Tasmania’s wild west coast and is home to one of the most beautiful rivers, the Gordon, renowned for its mirror-like reflections. Cruise on the river, spend a day kayaking or sandboarding or get up close to the rugged west coast scenery by taking the West Coast Wilderness Railway from Strahan to Queenstown.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA Cities, outback, deserted beaches and a licence to thrill.

In Australia’s largest state, Western Australia, venture into a land of wild extremes, from pristine sapphire beaches and amazing coral reefs on the coast to uninhabited and breathtaking scorched bushland.

WESTERN CAPITAL

THE RED NORTH

Perth and its surrounds offer a bounty of historical, natural and unusual attractions. Enjoy bushwalking through Kings Park and take a ferry to Rottnest Island where you can snorkel the reef and spot the native quokkas. Just out of the city are many amazing beaches or take the train to Fremantle, a town known for its bohemian vibe. Visit its markets for local goods and explore the old prison, before heading to the jetty for fish and chips. Back in the city, visit the Perth Cultural Centre for the museum, art gallery and regular performances, exhibitions and festivals.

Begin your journey in Lancelin, close to Yanchep National Park, the Pinnacles and Benedictine town, New Norcia. Lancelin is the place to be for surfboard or sandboard adventures. Further north is Kalbarri, where you can hike and explore the natural wonders of the Murchison Gorges, including the Natural Bridge, Eagle Gorge, Nature’s Window, the Z-Bend and Loop Gorge. Shark Bay is home to the famous Monkey Mia dolphins, which come to shore for food every morning. Spend some time away from the beach to explore the stromatolites and Shell Beach. Continuing north, Exmouth is the hub for scuba diving and snorkelling. Part of the Ningaloo Reef, it is home to a variety of sea creatures, including whale sharks. Be sure to stop by WA’s hidden treasure, Karijini National Park. And, of course, head up to Broome where you can spend days discovering dinosaur footprints, walking out to WW2

The Wild West Drive, fly or take the train to gold mining town, Kalgoorlie. Pan for gold, be amazed by the size of the Super Pit (part of a current working mine) and visit centuryold pubs that were built during the first gold rush.

bomber planes that are usually hidden in the sea, riding camels along the beach, watching the ‘Staircase to the Moon’ from, or relaxing on, Cable Beach. Your final stop in northern WA is Kununurra, home to the Bungle Bungle Range, Mirima ‘Hidden Valley’ National Park and Lake Argyle. With spectacular gorges, waterfalls and caves, this place is a postcard.

THE GREEN SOUTH Bunbury is a great first stop and home to entire families of dolphins – spot them from the shore or snorkel out to swim with them in the surf. Heading down to Dunsborough, join a diving trip and explore the HMAS Swan shipwreck. A short drive will take you to Margaret

River, famous for its wineries, exotic meats, cheeses and chocolates. Spend sunset at the beach watching the breaks that attract surfers from around the globe. Augusta is at the very tip of the South West, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet – check out the view from the top of the historical lighthouse. Charming timber town Pemberton is surrounded by giant Karri trees, including the 61-metre Gloucester Tree. Once used as a fire lookout, the tree can now be climbed by anyone who is feeling brave. For those who love the bush, continue to Walpole for the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk – a bridge that snakes through the canopy of the trees. Denmark is a thriving artist town with a mix of tranquil inlets along the coast as well as serious surf beaches. Further along the coast, Albany offers a range of activities including hang-gliding, abseiling and scuba diving. The Gap, Blowholes and Natural Bridge are must-sees. The town of Esperance boasts pristine, perfectly white beaches, striking blue water and an abundance of wildlife. Take the time to explore Cape Le Grand National Park, cruise the islands of the Recherche Archipelago and see the Pink Lake.
