UR COVER FEATURES DR. MARTY BECKER AND HIS DAUGHTER MIKKEL who created Fear Free Pets whose “mission it is to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety and stress in pets by inspiring and
whose educating the people who care for them.” Known as “America’s Veterinarian”, this best-
selling author and his family have all oars in the water as it pertains to taking care of our furry family members. Read more on page 30. Living about eight hours from Montana, it’s an easy drive to visit one of our favorite Fidofriendly states. In April this year with our three rescue hounds along for the ride, we visited Sage Lodge, truly a beautiful and close to nature experience. With miles of walking trails and the best on-site restaurant we’ve found in all our years of traveling, be sure to check out our review on page 36. If you can’t get enough ‘happy ever after’ stories then look no further than the incredible story of Yeyush and Renzo, two rescue dogs who have made it big in social media and on the runway. It is truly a Cinderella ‘tail’ and one worth the read page 24. We are gearing up for our 11th Annual Cross-country Pet Adoption Tour, Get Your Licks on Route 66®. My husband and I so look forward to this seven-week journey every year as we travel from Los Angeles to Chicago, stopping at shelters along the way to support adoption events. In the first 10 years, we have helped to place over 13,000 pets in to new forever homes. See last year’s recap on page 34, and check out our sponsors who helped make this possible. Be sure to follow along on our Facebook page as we post from the road starting September 7 where we kick-off with our spokesperson, Emmy Award Winning TV Host of the CBS series Lucky Dog, Brandon McMillan. It’s going to be epic. Happy summer! SUSAN SIMS

Brooklyn at GREY2K USA Worldwide office. (February 2019)
Formed in February of 2001, GREY2K USA Worldwide is the largest Greyhound protection organization in the United States with more than 100,000 supporters. As a nonprofit organization, the group promotes the adoption of ex-racers and works to pass laws to end the cruelty of dog racing around the world. With the passage of GREY2K's ballot question in Florida and the closure of China' only legal dog track, both in 2018, the group is determined to end dog racing everywhere. B R O O K LY N It was in 2011, when Christine ran across a story online, in the South China Morning Post, about the Canidrome, China’s only legal dog track located in Macau. It was the epitome of greyhound suffering and cruelty – over 400 greyhound were killed every year at the “world’s worst dog track” since it opened in the 1960’s – a staggering figure for over fifty years of abuse. At Christine’s urging, one of GREY2K’s board members, Charmaine Settle, travelled to China to investigate the conditions first hand. While there, she snapped a photo of an amazing tan and white greyhound whose racing name was “Brooklyn”. As if it were written in the stars – overnight, Brooklyn became the face of the campaign to close the track. “Free Brooklyn” posters appeared everywhere and soon help was pouring in to save the Canidrome dogs. A man named Albano Martins ran a shelter just down the road from the track and was ready to help save the dogs; because he knew when the dogs stopped running fast enough they would be killed. Brooklyn was already in danger; they knew they had to move quickly. It took seven long years, but the Canidrome is now finally closed for good, running its last race in June 2018. Since then, all the dogs, 532 of them, including Brooklyn, have been rescued from a death sentence. “Brooklyn should have never lasted as long as he did at the

the track owners realized what would happen if they did something to Brooklyn – so he survived, I believe, because he was the face of our campaign.” After the track closed, the Canidrome’s owner paid for all the airfare to send the 532 dogs from the track to adoption centers around the globe…a goodwill gesture long overdue. In a truly ‘made for TV moment’, Brooklyn, the ten-year-old miracle greyhound from the Canidrome was adopted by Christine and Carey in February of 2019. “Greyhounds are wonderful companions. We are working to change the public’s perception of these wonderful hounds.” Christine said. “Our grassroots team is trying to make them just dogs again, not racing dogs, not celebrities, just dogs. You know they are the only dogs mentioned by name in the

Every block in Manhattan seems to have a restaurant with fancy French, Asian, Fusion or Mediterranean dishes. Now Fido can indulge along with his human partners. The Wilson Restaurant is at 132 West 27th St. The trendy eatery is staffed by people who love dogs so it was a big "yes" when Culinary Director Jeff Haskell suggested offering a ground-breaking dog menu at the high-end restaurant. Haskell and his wife own a very sensitive English Bulldog named Stella for whom the chef had been whipping up favorites from the menu at home. It was a natural leap in logic to start offering Stella's favorites to her canine friends visiting The Wilson. Among the choices are a 16-ounce grilled ribeye steak and pan-roasted salmon. hat happens when a woman from an upscale neighborhood with a super smart chocolate lab meets a Colombian who came to the U.S. to escape Mafia violence? You have the most unlikely, and, the most powerful team of goodwill ambassadors you may ever see. June Bleich says, “Memo and I have known one another for years. He works as a butcher in
a food market in my area.” June recalls, “He and I discussed our shared love for dogs. He told
me about his dream to train dogs.” Memo struggled to learn English and remembers beginning his studies. “When I started the school to learn to train
dogs, I got four big books in the mail. I had to read in English! It was really, really hard – I took notes and used a dictionary to learn.” But Memo never became discouraged. “If you want something really bad,” he said, “you will work for it.” ‘One day,” Memo said, “my wife asked if I would bring a dog to the nursing home where she works. When you have a dog, it helps you to approach people and get them to smile.” Memo recalls. “I started working with Molly by then and asked June about taking her there, she said, ‘yes!’. Molly did so well…that’s when I started to do the visits.” When asked how he trained Molly to be bilingual, Memo laughs, “Didn’t plan it, it just happened. I did it when training the dogs in English, then, when I would be by myself, I spoke in Spanish.” He adds, “Molly was an easy dog, wonderful dog. She only took about a year to train.” When asked why he takes time to visit places most people avoid, like nursing homes and homeless shelters, Memo is very passionate about his answer. “I really love to help, be with the children, the old people, they love it! It’s like bringing a big present to them. When you see them smile a real smile – from the heart – you feel so good, it is wonderful.” June, Molly’s owner, wasn’t even aware that Memo had trained Molly to be bi-

lingual. When she found out, she said she was ‘thrilled.’ Memo says it is one of the things that help him reach people. “I can break the ice with the Spanish-speaking people. They find out Molly can speak Spanish and they open up.” Tom Manning, a longtime employee at Covenant House, where Memo, June, and Molly often visit says, “The young people at Covenant House have been robbed of the gifts of home and family in their lives…but when Molly and Memo come to visit Covenant House, they bring a small piece of “normal” with them. From the moment Molly, Memo, and June walk through the doors, all you see is smiles from the kids, the staff, and our volunteers.” When asked what was the most touching thing he had witnessed between Molly and someone at the shelter, Manning was quick to answer. “We had a shy young man come to one of Molly’s visits. He had a cap pulled tightly over his eyes, and sat against the wall in our gym. Molly came over to him and very slowly he opened up to her, petting her and saying a few things to Molly in Spanish. The next time Molly visited, the change was amazing. From the moment Molly came in, the young man grabbed a ball and started playing with Molly. He asked Memo if he could give Molly some commands in Spanish, and Molly sat for him, stayed, and rolled over. The smile on that young man’s face was something I will never forget.” Manning believes this type of program could make a difference in shelters everywhere. “There is no downside to this program, it is all positive. And as June, Molly’s owner says so beautifully, ‘if Molly can help just one young person who has suffered through a difficult childhood, then every visit is worth the time and effort.’ “Memo and Molly make such a difference in the shelter experience, especially for the children, because the children understand that Memo and June don’t have to be at Covenant House.” Manning says, “They are doing it out of love… our kids know and appreciate this, and it makes their visits that much more special. Memo, June and Molly show our kids that their lives, happiness and futures matter to them, and that is a very special gift.”

Welcome to the Pet-Loving World of the Becker Family By Arden Moore
30 Summer 2019
M
eet the Becker bunch: Marty, Teresa, Mikkel and Lexington. Right away, you quickly discover that this is not your typical pet-loving family. In fact, the Beckers go above and beyond in their roles as passionate advocates not only for dogs, but cats, horses, rabbits, turtles and every type of companion pet. They stand united in their family’s two-purpose mission: bring out the healthy best in pets and boost the bond between people and pets. Whether it is touting the documented healthy healing power of pets in a New York Times best-selling book, launching a fast-growing international movement called Fear Free Pets or happily rescuing another “canine-cocktail” mutt from a shelter, the Beckers never operate at idle speed. And, they wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s because pets are always on their radar. The bunch is led by Marty, also known as “America’s Veterinarian.” He happily wears many “collars” in the pet world: bestselling author, practicing veterinarian, adjunct professor and the force behind the Fear Free Pet campaign aimed at helping veterinarians, pet professionals and pet parents reduce fear, anxiety and stress in their pets. Yep, he has been a veterinary correspondent on national television news shows, written more than two dozen books that have sold nearly eight million copies while still operating as a veterinarian at a small animal clinic near his home in Bonners Ferry, ID and reigns as a popular keynote speaker for countless pet conferences.

And, he quickly adds, he is proud of the family’s dogs given anything but ordinary names: QT Pi, Quixote and Quill’N. The mixed breed trio were adopted from veterinary hospitals and animal shelters. “We consider our animals as family and we love them without limit, would do anything for them, pamper them and cater to them,” he declares. “I’ve learned so many life lessons from pets.” Dr. Becker quickly names three ways his “Q” dogs and all dogs past and present have made him a better human: 1. Observe others carefully. “I love seeing how dogs study us to determine if our getting up from the chair means a) we’re going to the bathroom, b) they’re going outside to go to the bathroom or c) this probably means a treat.” 2. Be happy! “Dogs don’t mope around, moody, listless, pouting. Happy and nice are underrated human attributes and I try to mimic what I see with our pets.” 3. Loyalty. “I have a very special son, QT Pi, who is the single most special dog I’ve had in my entire life. Beyond just my shadow, it’s almost like

I say that pets are the best part of us.” Together, the Becker bunch is striving to make this a happier, healthier planet for pets and their people. Mikkel sums up the Becker family’s mission: “No animal should have to suffer through unnecessary fear, anxiety and stress – it’s crippling. For us, and the Fear Free Pets movement, it’s all about the wellbeing of animals. We are impassioned to bring Fear Free into an everyday reality for pets and the people who love them.”

Surprising Facts About the Beckers (yes, all are true!)
Your veterinary team needs your help to make your pet’s visit as Fear Free as possible. One thing you can do is to ensure that your pet gets to the veterinary hospital in a calm state of mind. The following tips will help you and your pet arrive in one piece and in peace.
Preparing for the visit Hungry is good. If medically appropriate, reduce the amount of food your pet eats before a veterinary visit. This can help prevent nausea with car travel as well as make the treats at the veterinary visit more appealing. Treat bonanza. Bring 50 to 100 of your pet’s favorite treats but in tiny amounts. Cut them up if necessary. Your pet likes a variety of treats? Bring an assortment! Even your cat’s canned food might do the trick. Treats should be no larger than half a pea or a single lick. You might not use all of them, but it is better to have too many than not enough. Favorite toys and a grooming brush. Bring some familiar items your pet likes. This will help your pet relax in the veterinary hospital. The veterinary team may ask you to use these items to help distract your pet during the visit. Towel, shirt, blanket, or bed sprayed with species-specific calming pheromones or lavender. Commercially available calming pheromones can help promote relaxation. The scent of lavender has been shown to have a calming effect on dogs during car travel. An item that smells like home, such as a blanket your pet sleeps on or a T-shirt you’ve worn, can also provide comfort for your pet. For dogs, consider spraying a bandana with a calming pheromone and placing it on your dog’s neck. When you use pheromone sprays, allow the pheromone to dry for 10 to 15 minutes before exposing your pet to the sprayed item. Make sure your pet is acclimated to a carrier, crate, or seatbelt harness and is not stressed by travel confinement.
www.fearfreehappyhomes.com
Provide your pet with an opportunity to relieve himself prior to leaving your home and again before you go into the clinic. Nothing escalates stress more than having a full bladder or colon and no access to a bathroom. Budget plenty of time to avoid being rushed. If you are stressed, your pet will be too. If your veterinarian has prescribed any anti-nausea or anti-anxiety supplements or medications, make sure to give them as prescribed. Talk to your veterinarian if you think anti-nausea or anti-anxiety supplements or medications would help your pet have a more pleasant veterinary experience.
Acclimating your cat or dog to travel confinement. Make sure your pet is comfortable with confinement for travel. Carriers for cats and small dogs or crates or seatbelt harnesses for medium-size to large dogs are safe options for car travel. Use yummy treats to condition your dog to wearing a seatbelt harness. Keep the carrier/crate out in commonly used areas of the house at all times and incorporate some of these techniques to create a carrier/crate oasis: put your pet’s favorite toys or bedding near or in the carrier/crate; play with your pet near the carrier/crate; place a pheromone-infused towel or bed or an object of clothing permeated with your scent inside the confinement area; place treats, catnip (for our feline friends), or a rubber food puzzle toy with canned food inside the carrier; and feed your pet in or near the carrier/crate. Let your pet enter on his/her own. You can teach your pet to enter the carrier/crate on cue to earn a food reinforcement, or toss a treat or toy into the carrier/crate. Need help? Ask your veterinarian who he or she recommends for Fear Free training.
Get Your Licks on Route By Susan Sims, Publisher
13,000 dogs and cats have found new forever homes in the first ten years. Due in part to the generosity of our 2018 Sponsors, over 1432 dogs and cats found new forever homes and with their product donations, we were able to raise over $4,000 for our shelter partners from Los Angels to Chicago. Our TV appearance on Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family garnered almost 500,000 viewers along with our segment on Lucky Dog with tour spokesperson. Emmy Award Winning TV Host, Brandon McMillan. We drove over 7,000 miles to bring Get Your Licks on Route 66® to cities and towns where our ever popular Spinning Wheel had all those in attendance waiting in line for their chance to spin and win and promote sponsor products to new adoptees. From the smallest events to our biggest events at over 3,000 attendees, we took the time to deliver each sponsor’s message to those who won their product and stuffed goody bags with provided collateral. What goes on behind the scenes you might ask? Here is a typical day: •W ake up in a city somewhere in America. • Drive our three pack members, Junior, Jake and Honey to day care for the day. • Drive to the venue where two hours later after set up, we are ready for our first attendee to spin and win. •A fter our four to five hour event, we pack up and two hours after that we are on our way to pick up the pack, feed them, grab a bite to eat and head for our hotel. • Depending on driving distance, we are either heading to the next venue the following day or in the case of Austin, Texas, taking a two day drive to reach our destination. • In between cities, my husband Greg manages the driving while I work on my computer to keep up with FIDO Friendly magazine and correspondence. And yes, the time does fly by! While driving down America’s Favorite Highway in our Nissan sponsored 2018 NV3500 covered with sponsor logos, we counted the smiles. We marvel at how the tour has changed so many lives and has continued to bring attention to the plight of shelter pets and that how all of us, no matter how large or small our intentions, make a huge impact on so many people and pets. In the first ten years we have helped to place nearly 13,000 pets in to new forever homes. We are looking forward to our 2019 tour as we continue to drive miles and count the smiles. To keep up with this years tour, log on to fidofriendly.com and see where we might be stopping in a city near you and be sure to set your DVR to watch us on Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family September 5th and 6th. ing in Portland, Oregon. Voted Top 10 in the Pacific Northwest by Condé Nast Reader’s Choice Award, there is a wow factor when you view the façade with its glass windows and modern feel. Its close proximity to the Tom McCall Waterfront and walking paths makes an outing with Fido easy when taking in the sights and sounds of this eclectic city. A quick ride in the elevator delivers us to a large comfortable room with luxury bedding, robes and slippers, mini-fridge and use of dog beds and bowls during our stay. With 24-hour room service available, it’s tempting to stay in with Fido and order from the onsite restaurant, Terrane Italian Kitchen + Bar. We chose the kale salad with lemon caper. In the lobby area you will find The Portland Exchange, offering espresso and coffee along with many items such as breakfast sandwiches and pastries to enjoy there or take with you as you head out to enjoy the day. You can even pick up a custom picnic basket. The Porter Portland was awarded the 2019 Certificate of Excellence from tripadvisor and it’s easy to understand why. who come from France. We rent a car and embark on a 14-day road trip to explore the island. First stop. From Heraklion we head directly to the region of Rethymno, on the northern coast. We visit the Arkadi Monastery located 14 miles outside the city. This gorgeous Renaissance building erected in the 16th Century features Roman and Baroque styles. It played a crucial role in the Cretan resistance against the Ottomans. The Church itself does not allow pets, but I enjoy a charming walk through the large courtyard with Shark. We have dinner on the vibrant seafront of Rethymno and spend the night in the peaceful village called Charkia nearby. Second stop. For many people, Chania remains the most attractive city of Crete. We devote a whole day strolling through its picturesque and colorful nar-

The view on the monuments referring to various historical periods of the island is totally worth it! We cannot get enough of this panorama. Third stop. The Western coast of Crete hosts some of the most superb beaches on the island. We have booked two nights in the Fido-friendly Balos Beach Hotel, the closest accommodation to the incredible spot of Balos. This delightful family-run hotel lies on the beach in a dream setting. We are on the front seats to admire the sunrise. A five-mile track road leads to Balos beach and its turquoise lagoon. I confess that this landscape is among the most jaw-dropping

Fourth stop. The next highlight of our road trip is located in the central mountains of Crete, one-hour outside the capital Heraklion. We have booked another awesome Fido-friendly family-run accommodation called Arodamos Guesthouse. The traditional stone houses are built in the middle of nowhere. The sky seems closer that any village. As my friends and I are true nature lovers, we instantly fell in love with this place. We spend three days enjoying the infinity pool with a mountain view, the delicious meals prepared with their own products and peaceful hikes. Fifth stop. The Southern coast of Crete is less touristy since the access is more challenging. On the advice of a local friend, we spend a whole day in Agia Fotia Taverna in the village of Agia Fotini. This intimate restaurant serves fresh fish caught on the same morning and typical dishes of the healthy Cretan diet. We swim in crystal clear waters thinking that in the horizon lies Libya. Last stop. The last days of our journey are dedicated to the wild region of Eastern Crete. The golden sand beach of Vai is nestled in a unique set, the larg-

We fly back home with a deep crush on Crete. ‚ MARIA HIMMICH is a travel blogger who explores the world with her dog Shark. As Rubie has grown she can now keep up with Jess grins victoriously over a well-chewed ball.
Jess, and unless you’ve seen French bulldogs at full pelt you can’t appreciate how fast those little barrels can travel. They’re definitely front wheel drive dogs, the two front legs powering forwards and the back ones just bouncing along behind. Sticks, balls and fir cones are fiercely fought over, and each dog has no qualms about using the other to gain a height advantage. At night, they curl up together – white and fawn yin and yang – snoring louder than two aged drunkards. During the day they have more energy than they know what to do with, bouncing about as if the ground was made of trampolines. Jude has had to get increasingly high fences around her property to stop the pogoing pooches leaping out to greet every passerby. I love how on my daily visit they will hurl themselves towards me as if they hadn’t seen me in a lifetime, yet when I’m staying with them, responsible for their health and food and general doggy maintenance, I become a part of the furniture. An appreciated piece of furniture, but one that doesn’t require the administration of manic overtures.
...UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN FRENCH BULLDOGS AT FULL PELT YOU CAN'T APPRECIATE HOW FAST THOSE LITTLE BARRELS CAN TRAVEL. Rubie checks for intruders as we arrive home.
My advice to anyone moving to a new area would be to hang around waiting for the neighborhood dogs to appear and take care to be-

He Will Draw Your Dog An artistic passion has turned into help for the animals.

by Cheryl Smyth
T IS SAID THAT THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL. It is the eyes that make Paul
Atzmiller’s drawings special. And special is that those eyes and the artwork they belong to help raise funds for breed-specific dog rescue groups and animal shelters across the country. Atzmiller started penciling realistic pet portraits as a relaxing hobby over 35 years ago. Along the way, he developed his technique of concentrating on the eyes. An aspect that he feels accentuates an animal’s uniqueness has since proven to be his signature style. In the late 90’s, some of his co-workers noticed his creations in his work area and asked him to draw their fur pals. After about a dozen completed and given away, he was inspired with the idea that maybe he could raise money for animal rescues and shelters. In lieu of charging people, he began asking that they make donations to their favorite organizations instead. In his resulting fundraiser, I WILL DRAW YOUR DOG, he was able to assist assorted ones in the Colorado area, such as the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies, Max Fund, Inc. and Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue, Inc. When a local news
