Welcome to YELL’s 10th Annual Venture Challenge and our return to in-person pitches! It is so exciting to all come together again to celebrate the amazing ventures you have built. Over the past year, our students have shown incredible resilience and ambition as we emerge from the pandemic. In speaking with our network of YELL teachers, I am wholeheartedly impressed and excited about the future generations of problem solvers. I am confident they are ready for the challenges they will face out in the world.
We are entering an unprecedented period in education. Traditional assessment techniques and the inherent value placed on content memorization are thrown for a loop with emerging AI technology. Education is evolving. Our students and future leaders have access to tools that they must learn to utilize effectively. Programs like Entrepreneurship 12 offered by YELL give students the critical thinking skills and the initiative to see opportunities in the turmoil. Our team is honored to play a part in developing our future leaders.
In the past year, we have welcomed teams of students and educators from Yukon. In addition to our many teams in Metro Vancouver, Northern British Columbia, and Alberta, our YELL network is growing! I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to collaborate with educators in each of these regions to improve our programming further. I am extremely proud to be supporting such a dedicated and passionate team of teachers.
Finally, I would like to thank our community partners: RBC Foundation, TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, Coast Capital Savings, CPA BC, CPA AB, KPMG and MNP, for supporting the continued expansion and growth of our programming to schools across Canada. I would also like to express gratitude the many volunteers who have spent time with our classes this year, as speakers, mentors and judges. Thank you all so much for investing in Canada’s future leaders.
Thank you all for your engagement and support, and take care,
Ian MakAs part of the YELL entrepreneurship program, students in grades 10-12 learn the core concepts of lean entrepreneurship - from problem solving and ideation, to customer discovery and market segmentation! Over the last couple of months, students have formed teams to come up with a business venture idea, and with the guidance of mentors, validated their business idea and prepared a pitch presentation. They have been working hard as a team and have practiced their pitches many times. Each class even participated in a mock pitch with judges to prepare for the Venture Challenge!
The Venture Challenge is a pitch presentation event -think of it like Dragon's Den for high school! Teams have prepared and will present a 7 minute pitch to a panel of judges, comprised of members of our community, who have never seen or heard their presentation before. These judges may be business leaders, startup founders, industry experts, company CEOs, investors, community partners and accelerator program staff. Judges will ask questions and give feedback using our judge rubric. These filled out rubrics are then passed to the YELL teachers and used to assist them with assessment.
Mentors and judges are members of our community who volunteer to support our youth. They spend countless hours each year with our YELL students - sharing stories and advice, answering questions, making business connections to help them grow their professional network and helping them to validate their business ideas.
The Venture Challenge is a mandatory part of the program. Students must pitch at the Regionals event in order to fully complete and graduate the YELL program. (The SemiFinals and Finals are just a bonus for extra experience!) As YELL is an accredited high school course, students will receive a percentage and letter grade that's reflected on their high school transcript. They will also receive a program completion certificate if they graduate the program in good standing. Our partnered post-secondary institutions also offer YELL graduates, first year entrepreneurship credit if they choose to apply to their university - giving them a head start on their post-secondary journey!
We wish all of our YELL students good luck at our 10th Annual Venture Challenge!
Participation in the 2022/2023 YELL Venture Challenge Regionals is mandatory. Students must present in order to fully complete the YELL Entrepreneurship Program and receive a program completion certificate from your YELL teacher.
Pitch format:
Each team will do a 7 minute pitch
Approximately 10-15 minutes of Q&A and feedback from the panel of judges.
How to prepare your presentation:
Have your pitch saved on a USB drive in both Power Point and PDF formats! You will not have access to the internet on the room's computer, nor will you be able to plug in your own device to project onto the screen. Your final presentation must be saved on the USB drive and plugged into the room's computer. We do not suggest any videos that require audio output as the room may not have speakers set up.
Who will be in the pitch rooms:
Each pitch room will have YELL Ambassadors who will be facilitating and assisting with the transition between teams.
3 judges that will listen to pitches, ask questions, and give feedback using the judging rubric. This rubric will be given to your teacher for assessment purposes. You may also have YELL teachers, mentors, school administration, YELL partners and YELL students' supporters watching the presentation.
Feel free to invite your mentors, friends, and family to come watch your pitches! You've worked hard this year and we encourage you to invite them to cheer you on!
You may bring snacks and drinks to enjoy during the day but please do not consume snacks in pitch rooms or theatre. Make sure you are not leaving behind any trash or personal belongings. Please be respectful of other teams that are pitching, and students and faculty who may be working or studying at the university that day. There may also be classes in session so please keep the noise to a minimum.
