ince the beginning, the Lev y family has been there for the Seattle Kollel. 20 years ago, Dr. Rene and Beloria Lev y were the first honorees of the Seattle Kollel on Januar y 3 rd, 1993. So it is a par ticularly great honor, for the Lev ys, that this year for the 21st Seattle Kollel Dinner, the honorees are their son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Elie and Miriam Lev y. Rene & Beloria are proud, but not surprised. “All their lives we have taught our children to be involved in the community. Not just the synagogue, but the whole community,” says Rene. “ In a serious way, not just giving money, but giving of themselves.” The Lev y family were early suppor ters of the Kollel after their rabbi, Rabbi Solomon Maimon, founder of the Seattle Kollel, and Rabbi-Emeritus at Sephardic Bikur Holim, convinced them and others that bringing a Kollel to Seattle was ver y impor tant for building of community. Elie & Miriam have been involved in the Kollel and the greater Seattle

Jewish community since Elie returned to Seattle with his bride, Miriam, in 1997. “ Right away they got involved, helping, hosting, being leaders here,” says Rabbi Avrohom David, Rosh Kollel of the Seattle Kollel. “They are great examples of young families involved in ever y aspect of our community.” “ Being involved is impor tant to the Lev ys”, Elie says. Raising their children in three local Jewish schools , joining all three local Or thodox synagogues; par ticipating on various committees

“It’s how we live our lives, reaching out, sharing our love of Torah, Judaism and community. “ and, in Elie’s case, ser ving as president of Sephardic Bikur Holim in from Januar y 2008-Februar y 2010 , are just a some of the ways they have participated, “ We enjoy sharing our love of Torah, Judaism and community,” Miriam says one recent Monday morning as she prepares to host a weekly Torah class taught in their home by Rooksie David. Elie grew up in Seattle, the oldest of three children. Born in Paris, his Moroccan-born parents 10 brought the

family to Seattle in 1970 so that Rene, a pharmacist and professor, could work and teach at the University of Washington, and the family could be par t of a strong Sephardic community. Elie graduated from Seattle Hebrew Academy, where several of his children attend today, and Yeshiva Or Hazafon, the predecessor to the Nor thwest Yeshiva High School, where the oldest t wo boys now study. Four years at the UW were followed by medical school at the Alber t Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

M

iriam grew up in B rooklyn, where she attended Yeshivah of Flatbush Elementar y school & High School, then Stern College for Women, followed by Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education of Yeshiva University. The oldest of 10 children, her parents have always been active community par ticipants. Her mother, Shifra Hanon has been a teacher at Yeshivah of Flatbush HS for 25 years and ser ves on the board of the Sephardic Community center. Her father, Rabbi Ezra Hanon, a businessman, ser ves on varied committees at Congregation Shaare Zion of B rooklyn, and is a chaplain in hospitals and nursing homes and of ficiates free Jewish burials there. They are Miriam’s greatest mentors of Hesed.

T

he couple married in 1994 and moved to Montreal for Elie’s advanced training. Miriam taught first grade Judaics there, and they began their family. Three years later they came to Seattle, where Miriam continued substitute teaching as their family grew. Elie opened Dermatology of Seattle, in Burien, but always tries to work his busy medical practice around the family: Raymond, Ezra, Isaac, Jacob, Beloria, Avraham, and Solomon.

philosophy of the Kollel. Outreach is so impor tant. That ’s what we like so much about the Kollel. It ’s not just 10 rabbis studying, It ’s rabbis and their families, and their par ticipants engaging in the community, reaching out, bringing people in, building community, in addition to hosting classes, Discover y weekends, community seders and celebrations.

Ever yone is in school this year. The older boys are at Nor thwest Yeshiva High School, the next three at Seattle Hebrew Academy, and the t wo youngest at Torah Day School of Seattle.

“They are always hosting someone,” says Rooksie David, who has known Miriam as a parent, a student and most of all, a friend. “ I can always count on Miriam, and of course on Elie, to be ready to help, on a committee, to make a meal, to help a friend or someone in need. She gives of herself, without question.”

typical week might find parents and kids at various spor ts or social events through the schools, at a festive dinner at Ezra Bessaroth, at a kiddush at Sephardic Bikur Holim, and many mornings or evenings at ser vices or learning at Seattle Kollel. “ We like to help make the minyanim,” Elie says. “ Daily Tefillah is an impor tant par t of our lives”. That pattern continues at home where the family’s dining table of ten doubles as a study center for visiting scholars and students.

ooksie’s Monday morning class meets in the Lev y’s comfor table living room where the walls are lined and sometimes double-stacked with Jewish books and Judaica. Through the tall windows are peek-a-boo views of Seward Park and Lake Washington. The adjacent dining room is hung with por traits of famous rabbis. “ We have a deep respect for our Rabanim & hope their images inf luence us to follow in their ways” Elie says. “ We want our home to be a place for people to learn and love being Jewish,” he says. “That is similar to the 11

The Seattle Kollel is far more than one synagogue or another, Elie says.

“To us, it’s a crosssection of the community. Its’ purpose is to make Jews more aware of their backgrounds, of who they are and who they can be. “That’s what Rabbi David and the Seattle Kollel have done for Seattle for a quarter century and that’s why our family is so glad to be able to support and be part of it. “ W R IT TEN BY: CATHY GO DW I N

Richard Fruchter PresidentSEATTLE & CEO KOLLEL

We are writing to express our warmest mazal tov wishes to the Seattle Kollel, the staff, and the 21st annual dinner honorees, Dr. Elie and Miriam Levy.  The Seattle Kollel has influenced Jewish communities throughout the Northwest. The Kollel has been the foundation stone that has enabled exponential growth in the Portland Jewish community. The tireless efforts of Rabbi Avrohom David and the entire Kollel family have enabled new levels of dedication to both Torah values and Jewish community in cities such as Portland, Eugene, and Victoria BC. The sense of gratitude we have for the Seattle Kollel is boundless. Thank you for all of your efforts. Blessings for much continued success. Sincerely,

Rabbi Tzvi Fischer Director

Rabbi Chanan Spivak Director of Outreach

NORTHWEST YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL To Rabbi Avrohom and Rebbitzin Rooksie David and the entire Seattle Kollel,

Dear Friends: The Mishcan – the Tabernacle of the wilderness – was constructed from materials contributed by Bnai Yisrael. When Moshe announced the campaign to collect the materials required to fabricate the Mishcan, the princes of the tribes of Bnai Yisrael immediately and graciously offered to guarantee the adequacy of the supply of materials. The people contributed generously. Their donations exceeded the requirements. As a result, little opportunity remained for the princes to contribute. This disappointment prompted the princes to approach Moshe and propose that they provide the Mishcan’s inaugural offerings. Our Sages are critical of the princes’ guarantee. This is difficult to understand. True, the princes were not called upon to act on their guarantee. However, the generosity of the people does not detract from the immense graciousness of the princes! Our Sages are imparting an important lesson about the responsibilities of leadership. An effective leader assumes responsibility for projects and outcomes. This aspect of leadership was clearly embodied by the princes. They assumed absolute responsibility for the assembly of materials adequate to fabricate the Mishcan. However, a leader must also lead by demonstrating proper behaviors and attitudes. He must, very literally, lead the people by acting before others and thereby, setting the example. This aspect of leadership was not present in the princes’ offer. They did not provide the first contributions to set an example for the nation. Elie and Miriam Levy embody both aspects of leadership delineated by our Sages. They accept upon themselves responsibility for completion of the projects that they undertake. They also lead by example. They are among the first to speak up, to act, and contribute to so many important projects and programs. They are excellent and deserving honorees. Mazal tov to Elie and Miriam. Congratulations to Rabbi David, the Kollel faculty, and the Kollel’s lay and professional supporters on the occasion of the annual gala. Sincerely,

Living Judaism April 25, 2012 To whom it may concern, It is a pleasure and an honor to celebrate the 21st annual gala dinner with Rabbi Avraham David and the dedicated staff of the Seattle Kollel. For nearly a quarter of a century, the Kollel has served as an invaluable resource for our community by offering an array of programs designed to educate and inspire Jews from a wide range of backgrounds and affiliations. I can think of no better way to celebrate the Kollel’s continued achievements than by honoring Dr. Elie and Miriam Levy, who have done so much to elevate the quality of Jewish life here in Seattle. The Levys truly exemplify everything that the Kollel stands for, which is why we wish them and the Kollel much brocha and hatzlacha in all their endeavors for many years to come. Sincerely, Rabbi Mark Spiro Executive Director

Congregation Ahavas Torah congratulates the Seattle Kollel on 21 years of community outreach, providing “Jewish learning for every level.” May Dr. Elie and Miriam Levy be a tremendous source of inspiration for all. We wish the kollel continued blessing and succcess. Mazal Tov,

We couldn’t be more pleased to see the Kollel honoring such amazing members of our community as Elie and Miriam Levy. Not only do they learn Torah and support the learning of Torah, they live Torah as well. The Seattle Kollel is a unique Kollel in that its members also fulfill multiple roles. They learn, they teach, and they also live Torah. Jewish outreach is close to our hearts at Seattle NCSY, and we are proud to be partners with the Kollel in this endeavor. Rabbi David and the Kollel have been endlessly supportive of NCSY programs, providing essential services to our youth. The future of the Seattle Jewish community is reliant on selfless, generous individuals who understand the important role of institutions such as the Kollel. Elie and Miriam are not just generous, they are also involved. They both have a vision for themselves, for their children, and for their community, and they do the work to make it happen. Thank you, Levy family and the Kollel, for continuing to bring Torah to the masses.
