In the pursuit of creating an adaptable and inviting space for students to enjoy and socialise, our design plan takes into consideration their unique needs and preferences. Focusing on the seamless integration of private and communal areas, as well as the semi-permeability of the facade, we aim to foster an environment that promotes comfort, interaction, and a sense of ownership among the residents. Communal staircases that snake up the facade act as buffer zones between the private and public spheres, facilitating chance social interractions to improve social cohesion. With bedrooms lined along the north wall, these private spaces create a buffer zone that separates them from the communal living areas. We have employed intermediary rooms using partition walls to strike a balance between personal privacy and a sense of connection with the shared spaces. This arrangement allows for a smooth transition from private retreats to open communal spaces. The undefined communal living area intentionally creates a versatile space that can be adapted to suit a variety of activities and lifestyles. Taking inspiration from the Japanese concept of ‘shoji,’ sliding facade panels have been incorporated into the design. These panels can be effortlessly moved according to individual preference, granting the users control over the penetration of sunlight, ventilation, and privacy. By allowing natural light to permeate through the space and providing opportunities for fresh air circulation, we create an ambiance that promotes well-being and comfort. Our choice of construction materials further enhances the adaptability and sustainability of the space. Utilising cross-laminated timber (CLT) beams and columns in the timber frame construction not only enables long spans and flexible spaces but also ensures that materials can be reused after the building’s lifecycle. Drawing inspiration from the efficient itakura method of Japanese wood joining processes, we prioritize structural integrity and efficiency in the design of the joints. To minimise operational energy consumption, photovoltaic glass panels have been integrated into the facade. These panels harness solar energy, providing a renewable source of power for the building. Additionally, the communal living space serves as a thermal buffer, utilising solar and thermal benefits for indirect gains. This environmentally conscious design approach is further augmented by the incorporation of an urban farm on the roof, promoting biodiversity and self-sufficiency. Furthermore, the implementation of a water retention lake parallel to the building significantly increases the capacity to handle extreme rainfall, adding to the project’s overall environmental responsibility. The semi-permeability of the facade, achieved through sliding and movable partition walls, empowers users with control over privacy, ventilation, and solar exposure. The simplicity of the design allows for easy reproduction and rearrangement to accommodate various configurations, ranging from studios to double-height apartments. The ground floor plan includes a laundry bar, bicycle storage, shops and rental spaces to provide the community with easily accessible facilities and to support future adaptability. By remaining adaptable to changing market demand and user preferences, our architecture ensures its longevity and relevance in response to evolving circumstances. In conclusion, our design narrative weaves together the concepts of adaptability, sustainability, and user empowerment to create an environment that students can truly call their own. By seamlessly blending private and communal spaces, incorporating sliding facade panels, and employing sustainable materials and technologies, we aim to establish a vibrant and harmonious living space that fosters connection, comfort, and well-being.

MEDICAL CENTRE
01
GROWTH, PEACE, AND HEALING Centrally located on campus, this medical centre features Passivhausinspired timber-framed construction for energy efficiency. The atrium, with a winding staircase, serves as a healing green oasis. Internal fractal, tree-like columns echo the surrounding forestation. Sustainability highlights include rainwater harvesting, PV-covered roof, and straw bale insulation for Passivhaus compliance. Beyond function, the Medical Centre aims to rejuvenate, fostering well-being for the diverse University and public community it serves.
FROM THE EARTH
+
FRACTALS Inspired by the fractal nature of trees, the columns in the waiting space mimic a tree’s flaring branches, gradually opening under each floor. This design not only offers viewers a preview of the upcoming floor, echoing the effect seen on the roof, but also provides additional support to the first and second-floor slabs, reinforcing the entire structure. The tree-inspired columns not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also bring a natural and organic element to the overall architectural concept.

The primary goal for the new building is to enhance the streetscape with a defined building line and engaging street presence. The west-facing facade features strategically placed windows and balconies, creating a dynamic design. The ‘L’ shaped internal layout includes walkways and habitable rooms with views of the enclosed car park. This design reestablishes the building line, promoting passive surveillance and benefiting the street and neighboring commercial properties.
