Another great publication designed & edited by

Dimension

We are finally into the summer months and it feels great, I am looking forward to lots of BBQs, picnics, long dog walks and, of course, a few glasses of good wine. Our local news covers everything from a male choir to updates from our local school. We also have a very interesting history read this month and the front cover reflects this. The Yaxley Gazette is launching a new website at the beginning of July and it will include everything about Yaxley, plus in time, it will incorporate the surrounding villages. We have been working very hard behind the scenes and I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Fenland Design and Busy Bee Admin for making this happen. Please remember to support local businesses, as our community is really thriving, it’s great to be a part of it. Always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be good to hear your story. We’d also like to learn about your triumphs and achievements as a community, charity work, forthcoming events and any information that you wish to share with our readers. Don’t forget to mention to the advertisers that you saw them in the Yaxley Gazette, without them this publication would not be possible. Thanks again for your continued support.

BLOG by Drew Pontikis

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been enjoying the cricket recently. I don’t have Sky or BT Sports my opportunities to watch are fairly limited; a relaxing day of cold beer, comfy sofa and a test match has been added to the list of things that don’t happen anymore following the joy of parenthood. The BBC, however, have done me a solid, and have been showing the ICC Champions Trophy and there’s been some cracking cricket on show. Due to the cruel mistress that is my delivery deadline, the winners of the tournament are floating in the ether somewhere between now when I’m writing and now when you’re reading it, but having just seen Australia crash out (ha!) I can safely assume it wasn’t them. Anyway ... for those who aren’t keeping up with the cricket, it tends to be on TV quite late in the evening. Dedicated fans such as I will way up the pros and cons of staying up until the early hours on a school night, then decide to power through and cancel it out with a second cup of coffee in the

morning. So there I find myself watching India vs Sri Lanka, and feeling tired. Properly tired. Tired to the point of drifting in and out of awakedness. I should really go to bed, but I’m a stayer. I’m committed to my cricket, and I will keep going. Suddenly, I wake up to the sound of a loud bang from the kitchen! Clearly some time has passed, as the TV has turned itself off and my neck hurts from falling asleep at some ridiculous angle. A second loud bang makes me jump into full alert – sounds like someone banging on a window. I’ve seen the Facebook group, I’ve seen the shrill, inflammatory Daily Mail headlines; there’s a burglar, possibly five, trying to break into my house and I’m armed only

tarting from scratch in April, the Men United guys – most of them with no previous singing experience - are rehearsing over 15 weeks towards the concert. Together with Peterborough Male Voice Choir, they will be performing a varied programme of choral favourites, ballads and songs from the shows in what promises to be a really memorable evening! There are as many reasons for getting involved in Men United in Song as there are men taking part: while some simply want to give singing a try, others want to socialise, and for others the charity has personal relevance…or a combination of all three! Whatever their motivation, the project has been a fantastic and sometimes emotional experience for all concerned. Paul, from Yaxley, says "This journey that we are on has inspired

with an Xbox controller and my wife’s hardback copy of Ed Balls’ autobiography. ‘Oh well’ I thought to myself ‘time to die’ . Slowly I peered into the kitchen, fully expecting to see a group of large men in balaclavas turning the gas off so they could steal the oven, to find that I had fallen asleep with the window open and it had blown a drinks bottle off the side and into the sink. Quickly shutting the window, to prevent the remaining burglars hiding in the garden from getting in, I checked that everything else was locked and scarpered off to bed before anything awful could happen to me. And that is how I learned that I’m terrified of everything.

On Saturday 22 July Peterborough’s muchloved Broadway Theatre will open its doors for Men United in Song, a charity concert supporting Prostate Cancer UK.

me to carry on singing after the event. We are more than 40 strong, ordinary guys from all walks of life, most of us have never sung in a choir until now and we sound awesome! This is something all men should try once in their lives and it’s raising money for a great cause too!" “I joined Men United in Song full of trepidation, but by the end of the first rehearsal everything was different” agrees Adrian. “The group of guys was amazing, everyone was made to feel welcome and my incredible journey began – there

were so many highs in just a few short months. There are very few years that you describe as life changing but this has definitely been one of them!” Will Prideaux, director of the project, says “It’s been a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. They take their music making as seriously as their socialising and they’re sounding really great! There’s a camaraderie among them and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with.”

Men United in Song will be at Peterborough’s Broadway Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday 22 July. BOOK NOW! Tickets from £13 available at Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, at www.peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk or on 0333 666 3366.

Thank you to Stewart Howe, who dreamed up the event back in 2012 and is still heavily involved.

Thanks to Yaxley Parish Council for the use of their facilities for the weekend and for their sponsorship.

Thanks to the Young Technicians who worked all weekend over the two stages, garnering plaudits from the professional stage crew as well as the bands. They are quite a tolerant bunch and we do think they are great neighbours Thank you to anybody we missed (it wasn’t on purpose we promise) And finally, thank you to YOU!

Thanks to the 501st Legion and The Rebel Alliance for their attendance and helping us with our opening ceremony.

To those who came, to those who spent money with our traders (they will want to come back next time now!) to those who took part in the parade, or the car show, the dog show, the touch rugby sessions and everything else.

o many women chat and often say “Oh, I used to love Guides” or “Brownies was a lot of fun” or(often) “my daughter absolutely adores Rainbows!” If you are one of those ladies then how about reliving your childhood in Guiding by becoming a leader. It’s (almost) as much fun as being a youngster again, and at the moment we really, really need some help! In Yaxley District I look after 9 Girlguiding Units – from ages 5 to 26 we try to provide opportunities within Guiding for every girl. Little ones start at Rainbows (2 Units) and then at 7 years old girls move on to Brownies (3 Units). After age 10 we have 3 Guide Units and one Senior Section group for the over 14s. 2 of the Units are at Holme and the others meet at the new Scout and Guide HQ in Yaxley on various evenings in term-time. Each Unit is staffed by an amazing bunch of hard working and well trained volunteers but due to work pressures, health issues and maternity almost all the groups are going to need more helpers to continue later this year. If you could spare an hour and half a week – or even just sometimes – or could help with admin, or maybe you were a leader before but somehow Guiding slipped down your list of priorities – do please get in touch! Now’s the time as we need help to continue giving your daughters an adventurous and safe Girl-only space. You simply have to be over 18, enthusiastic and happy to be DBS checked. Training is on the job. Men are also welcome! You don’t have to commit to a particular age range – each level has its own challenges and leadership team and you are welcome to try a few Units to establish where you feel most comfortable. Thanks and I hope to meet you soon. St Peter’s Church I had lunch with some colleagues in a pub just outside Peterborough recently. The wall was covered with various photographs, memorabilia etc. One sign said this: “If you’re looking for a sign this is it”. This reminded me of a sign which someone, presumably with a sense of humour, had placed on a cliff top which just says: “Please do not throw stones at this sign”. While Jesus was on earth he was often asked for a sign to prove who he was. For example, after Jesus had fed 5,000 men and their families with a boy’s picnic lunch people asked him for just such a sign. It’s always amazed me, and I think it’s supposed to surprise us, that Jesus was asked for a sign immediately after performing such a miracle. Surely the miracle should have been sign enough. I believe that the world today is full of signs of God’s presence. Sadly, we have to acknowledge that there is evidence too of evil. The terrorist incidents in London, Manchester and elsewhere are signs of the evil which currently blights our world. However, the love and courage which have been shown during and after these incidents are signs of God’s presence with us. Justin Bieber was surely right to talk about God’s love for us at the One Love concert in Manchester. There are many signs of God’s presence with us. If you would like to reflect on this further please do join us at St Peter’s or any of the other local churches. Everybody is always most welcome. We are now taking bookings for our annual holiday club which is open to primary school aged children. This runs in the mornings from 9.45am to 12.30pm in the last week of the school holidays from Tuesday August 29th to Friday September 1st. There will be games, crafts, “stage time” and much more around the theme of Christian Values. Further details and a registration form available on our website. With my prayers for a wonderful summer

Ben Pitt

What’s the best thing about living in Yaxley? Are there enough things for you and your family to do?

Your thoughts about Yaxley Ben Pitt is the new Communities Officer for Hunts Forum, an organisation that supports voluntary and community organisations to help them set up, develop and grow. He’s working in Yaxley this summer and wants to find out what local residents think of existing services, what they feel is missing and what can be done to fill the gaps. The best ideas always come from local people, which is why he wants to hear from you. Voluntary organisations might include preschool groups, youth clubs, sports and exercise groups, work experience opportunities, support for older people or those with additional needs, community car schemes, book clubs, community choirs, drawing classes, sewing clubs, gardening clubs, coffee mornings and cookery clubs. It includes organisations that support a range of activities, such as a residents’ association, neighbourhood watch scheme or a timebank. Please visit www.tinyurl.com/yaxleysurvey to complete the survey. It should take about five minutes and can make a big difference to the services and activities available in your community. You can also pick up a paper copy of the survey at Yaxley Group Practice (Landsdowne Rd, PE7 3JL), and drop off the completed form there too.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel Thank you to the 40 people who came to our Strawberry Tea and made it such a success in June. We raised £140 for the Circuit Community Project. The cakes were amazing and there was such a lovely atmosphere in the Chapel, it was lovely to see friends from Snowhills there too. On the 8 July we will be holding our next Coffee Morning starting at 10 a.m. Foodbank. We were able to donate a large amount of non perishable food to St. Peter's last month. Thank you to everyone that brings these life enhancing gifts to the Chapel and especially thank you to the residents of Snowhills who contribute. We would love to see you join us for a Sunday Service or Junior Church. We start at 10.30 a.m. every week. Children of all ages are welcome. Hereward Harmony I last sang in my school assembly in 1970, not counting the privacy of my own shower! I visited Hereward Harmony to see them rehearse and find out if the Barbershop style would interest me. What impressed me immediately was how friendly they all were and how much fun they were having, not to mention the lovely sound they made. This was back in February and since then I have become a full member. Rehearsing every week and using teach tracks have allowed me to achieve an acceptable standard of singing. The beauty of it being a chorus is that you don’t have to sing by yourself, you just join in with more experienced members singing the same part. My first public performance was last month when we put on a

I recently retired and have spent some time looking at various activities. Golf, cycling, and Pilates are good but a friend suggested trying singing. Dave Piper (Broadway Yaxley) very successful concert for charity. Although rather nervous at first things went well and I have to say that it was hugely enjoyable. Had anybody asked me a year ago if I could sing then I would have given the same answer that I’m sure many people do – ‘only in the bath!’ I would also have had the same reaction as my son who thought that dad singing was hilarious. I’m glad I took the plunge and can’t recommend it enough. Why not do what I did and come along to a rehearsal? It won’t cost you anything and you’ll get a cup of tea and a biscuit. You might even be inspired to try it for yourself. You don’t have to be retired and you don’t have to read music!

Rehearsals are every Thursday evening from 7.30 until 10pm at the Orton Wistow Community Hall in Napier Place. More details are available on the website www.herewardharmony.co.uk

Yaxley Group Practice Appointments at YGP

Late arrivals

We use a system called Dr First, which aims to do ‘today’s work today’ and means there is no waiting list to see a doctor and we are never full. If you require an appointment with a doctor or nurse practitioner book online from 6.30pm the night before or ring on the day you wish to be seen at any time during our opening hours from 8am to 6pm whether your problem is urgent or routine. The doctors arrange all their own appointments. The doctor of your choice will discuss your needs and plan your care accordingly. It is helpful to avoid Monday mornings for non-urgent matters as this is a busy time. If you are certain you will need to be seen face to face it is also helpful to book online or ring before 4pm if possible. Appointments for minor operations, private medicals and treatment room services such as injections, blood tests and smear tests can be booked in advance via reception or on-line. If you wish to enquire about your results please call the practice after 2pm. We will also offer a minor injuries service throughout the day to avoid Accident & Emergency attendances. Why not book your telephone call or appointment electronically using SystmOnline website or app? It is a quicker, cheaper and more convenient way to access our services 24/7.

When an appointment time has been issued to our patients we do our best to see them on time. Our primary concern is the safe and efficient delivery of medical care for all our patients. We ask all our patients to arrive in a timely manner for their appointments. We suggest you are checked in and in the appropriate Waiting Room at least 5 minutes before your appointment time. We understand that a patient’s arrival can be delayed due tomany different reasons, sometimes out of the patient’s control, but increasing numbers of late arrivals interfere with the clinician’s ability to stay on schedule, deliver required patient care, and can cause delays for other patients. We do understand that it can be frustrating when the clinicians themselves are running late but this is often due to emergencies and unexpected care required by patients. Could all our patients please be aware that arriving late for your appointment may result in you not being seen and your appointment being rescheduled for another date and time. Please make a realistic allowance for arriving early and any potential traffic conditions when planning your journey. Please be aware and understand that despite our best efforts, it may still be necessary to reschedule your appointment. Please let our reception team know ASAP if you are likely to be late or miss your appointment. Thank you for helping us to maintain the standards of care we strive for.

Please note: There will be no meeting at the Lancaster Club in July as we will be going out to afternoon tea at the end of the month.

Yaxley WI In June we held our first ever open meeting and we were pleased to welcome several visitors and, of course, our own members. Our speaker was Tim Dutton a former RAF serviceman who now talks on various wartime subjects and gives tours at the RAF Wyton Heritage Centre. We heard that during WW2 bombing was not always accurate due to various reasons such as the type of navigational equipment and windy and rainy weather conditions. It was thus decided to form a Pathfinder Squadron but the idea was opposed by some, such as ‘Bomber Harris' as it was thought it would form an elitist squadron to the detriment of

other squadrons. However, Winston Churchill supported the idea and the squadron came into existence in August 1942 with an Australian Group Captain (later Air Vice Marshall) Don Bennett in charge. Much of the flying was at night. The Pathfinders, by dropping flares to indicate targets, helped the Bombers to achieve a much higher success rate, and by destroying munitions factories and aircraft factories, this hampered the German war machine. What a debt we owe both the brave aircrew and the groundcrew who enabled the planes to keep flying and it is wonderful that people such as Tim are able to tell their story.

Yaxley Parish Council 3G summer volunteers

Following a successful few days opening the 3G pitch during half term, we are looking to have a similar arrangement through the school summer holidays. However this will need a number of volunteers to help run this. We will help with any DBS applications so anyone willing and able to assist please contact our office for further information, contact details below.

Enjoying the Middletons Rec

We go to great lengths to keep the village litter free. The Grounds Team spend a considerable amount of time picking up an increasing amount of litter discarded on the Rec. We want residents to enjoy using the rec ground but would politely ask that any discarded wrappers, bottles, cans and food be placed in the bins provided or are taken home to bin, thus enabling everyone to enjoy the park, all of the time.

Yaxley Festival

With a contribution of over £12,000 Yaxley Parish Council are pleased to have been one of the main sponsors to the Festival. For the first year we opened our Chambers to display some of the details of the council past and present and what we are working to deliver looking forward. It was great to hear first hand, villagers thoughts about how we are serving the village and their views on improvements which are to be taken forward to council.

Buckingham Palace garden party

Councillors were delighted that their nomination of Mark and Christine Oliver for services to the village over a number of years had been accepted to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace. The couple were recognised for Mark’s work as a District and Parish Councillor and for both their continued dedication and hard work delivering the festival. Taking a well deserved day off, the couple travelled to Buckingham Palace at the beginning of June and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

localhistory

The story of militia on Yaxley Fen has been handed down by word of mouth through generations of Yaxley families for more than two centuries.

Roy Butters

Muskets at the Old Mill

S

ome believed that an old drainage mill was used by the soldiers from the Norman Cross depot for target practice but a lack of any historical records left these claims unsubstantiated. Inspired by this mystery, local historian Roy Butters and archaeologist Gary Rossin decided to investigate and see what evidence they could unearth from the site of the old mill.

Stewart Howe

Permission to use a metal detector was kindly given by Tony and John Mears. At that time, the understanding was that the soldiers had been shooting at the old mill itself, i.e. the old mill was the target. Consequently, I started to search the area of the mill mound, in the north-east corner of the field, adjacent to the bank of Yaxley Lode. A search in autumn 2015 and another after harvest of 2016 produced only half a dozen musket balls but lots of odd shaped pieces of lead, amongst many other indications of the old mill having once been there. It was not looking promising. John had told me that, over many years, he had picked up enough musket balls to fill a cigar tin, from the surface of the field, following ploughing. I decided to ask John where he had found them. The answer was along the southern boundary adjacent to the modern pump drain, which was quite a surprise, as it didn’t fit with the story. I began a systematic search along the southern boundary and immediately started to recover musket balls. I marked the location of each ball and used marker poles and flags for each search sweep. I soon had sixty finds marked. A happy coincidence put me in touch with my subsequent project partner, Gary Rossin,

an archaeological enthusiast and resident of Yaxley. Gary immediately shared my enthusiasm for the project and came on board. He plotted all the musket ball find spots, using GIS and subsequently produced plans of the site. His plans have proven pivotal to our interpretation and understanding. He got infected with the bug and bought a metal detector too! More than 200 musket balls were recovered from the field and duly plotted. The developing pattern seemed to indicate that the direction of fire, was not towards the old mill at all, but towards the south, which would be in the general direction of the modern-day Pretoria Farm. In October 2016, we were given permission to search the field to the south of the pump drain, where a further 200 plus musket balls were discovered. Gary also started to make finds with his new metal detector in addition to his ‘day job’ of plotting the finds. More than 400 musket balls had been recovered. The size of the balls matches that of those fired by the military flintlock musket, known as ‘Brown Bess’ so there was clearly something going on! A considerable amount of scrap lead was found, much of it in small pieces having the appearance of having been molten. At first, I thought this to be building debris from the old mill as it was particularly heavily distributed in the general area of the mill mound. However, Gary thought it could be evidence of casting. As the project developed we realised that some of the finds were of miss-cast musket balls and some had evidence of the casting tab or sprue remaining intact. Numerous pieces of lead consistent with being the cut-off casting sprue have also been recovered. Perhaps they were

North York Militia Button indeed casting their own musket balls on site? About seventy metal buttons were found, many of which are of a distinctive material, construction and type used on military uniforms of the Napoleonic period. Two hundred years in the plough soil has worn and corroded most of them to the degree that positive identification is no longer possible. Several have faint remnants of regimental markings but one is positively identifiable as the North York Militia. The history of the North York Militia tells us that they were part of the garrison of Norman Cross in 1797 and 1812.

What do we think we know so far?  The story is mainly true  There was a musket shooting range in Yaxley Fen.  It was on the field(s) where the old drainage mill stood.  It was militia soldiers doing the shooting.  They were not using the mill as a target, ‘at the old mill’ meant the location.  They were shooting to the south, at targets located in front of or on the old fen bank, known as South Bank.  The musket balls that overshot the bank, travelled on for a further two hundred metres or so, falling onto undrained fen, where they have lain unnoticed, in a dense cluster, ever since. This is a work in progress. Who knows what we will find once the 2017 harvest has been gathered in? Watch this space.

BEER L FESTIVA

Peterborough Beer Festival 2017 celebrates the 40th year of CAMRA beer festivals in Peterborough, they will be extending their opening times on both the Friday and Saturday until 11.30pm which will enable festival visitors to enjoy a truly memorable August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival runs for 5 days from Tuesday - Saturday and will hold live musical entertainment every evening. There will be a good range of food available at PBF - both bar snacks and main meals. Full details here: (www. peterborough-camra.org.uk/index. php?module=pbfvendors) This year the PBF is hoping for a great attendance with it being their big 40. They feel that PBF has been held in great affection by residents of the city for many years now, in large part due to the number of local unpaid volunteers who staff it each year. PBF’s social media

is filled with messages from people telling us that PBF is their favourite annual event and they genuinely look forward to it. It's often the place where friends who haven't seen each other for a while bump into one another unexpectedly PBF is a family friendly festival. As the festival is held on the Embankment there is plenty of green space for children to play, supervised of course, and under 18's are free (admittance only with an adult). There are a variety of alcoholic alternatives to beer as well as soft drinks bar. For the older children there are pub games and a funfair.

home&garden

Here comes

THE CAVALRY

The balmy weather of July sees plants spurting with growth in the garden provided of course there is enough water about. It is also the time of year when the aphids make their presence known

G

reenfly descend on roses and virtually every other plant imaginable whilst blackfly love nasturtiums and broad beans. But it is not a time for despair for in the well balanced garden it is also time for the cavalry as ladybirds and lacewings flood in to control these sap sucking pests. There are 46 species of Ladybird found in the UK roughly half of which resemble the typical ladybird recognisable from the eponymous books. A few of the ladybirds can be identified by counting their spots such as the relatively common 2-spot and 7-spot. Perhaps most common now in our gardens is the US import the Harlequin ladybird, it too devours aphids and is generally larger than the British natives. The ladybird larvae are even more avaricious in their aphid consumption and appear more threatening to the human eye, the Harlequin even having spines down its body. There are 43 species of lacewing found in the UK broadly divided into brown and green variants, often described as looking like fairies due to their delicate bodies and finely latticed wings. Like the ladybird both adult and larvae feast on aphids.

TWO SIMPLE STEPS Obviously the ideal is to increase the numbers of these beneficial insects in our gardens and there are two simple steps to doing this.  Avoid using pesticides as these kill our friends the ladybirds and lacewings as well as the aphids, if things get out of control try spraying the plants with washing up water which causes the aphids to lose their grip on your plant without endangering the predators.  Create safe places for both to overwinter, many garden centres sell lacewings and ladybird homes generally slatted structures or upward facing holes. A good alternative is to cut both ends off a 2 litre plastic drinks bottle and fill the centre with rolled up corrugated cardboard. A free winter shelter for these useful bugs if hung up in a sheltered spot.

New fines for litter louts – particularly those who car share!

If there’s one thing to make most of us tut with distain is watching someone deliberately drop litter or throw rubbish from a car. Keep Britain Tidy estimates that more than 30 million tons of litter are collected from streets in England every year, that’s enough to fill four Wembley stadiums. The charity has found that, while 62 per cent of people dropped litter, just 28 per cent admitted having done so. Almost six in 10 people said they considered litter to be a problem, and local authorities spend an estimated £1 billion a year clearing up the mess. However, new plans to clean up on litter louts are currently under discussion which will see fines for people caught dropping rubbish in public places doubled to £150.

At the moment, fines for littering are set locally by councils and range from £50 to £80, with a default level of £75 if the council does not specifically set its own amount. In addition, drivers could also be fined automatically if litter is thrown from their vehicle, even if a passenger is to blame, according to reports. The Government wants litter thrown from cars to be treated in the same way as speeding, with the registered keeper held responsible unless someone else comes forward to admit the offence. Fines for littering from a vehicle could also be increased from £75

to £125 in England under a new strategy being drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). It would then be down to the driver to either admit to the offence and pay the prescribed fine; challenge it in court; or nominate the passenger who was actually at fault. What do you think to these proposals? We hope that a change in the law will encourage the minority of people who flout it to think before flinging their crisp packet, flyer stuck to the windscreen or takeaway box out of their window – and to think a little more about our environment.

Reform of Landlord’s Taxation?

The government’s plans to allow landlords to use the cash basis for tax purposes were confirmed in the 2017 Spring Budget, but although the proposed legislation was included in Finance Bill 2017, it did not appear in the much reduced Finance Act 2017, which received Royal Assent on 27 April 2017. It is likely that the proposals have been temporarily shelved, pending the outcome of the General Election, and are expected to reappear in a second Finance Bill later this year. If the provisions are subsequently enacted, they are expected to apply retrospectively from 6 April 2017, i.e. for the current tax year. Up to and including 2016-17, profits of a property business must be calculated in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice (GAAP), commonly referred to as the accruals basis. Although this remains the case for certain landlords (including companies, LLPs, corporate firms, and trustees of trusts), if the Finance Bill 2017 provisions are enacted, the position for 2017-18 onwards will be more complicated. The general rule is that the cash basis must be used. However, this is subject to some exceptions and there will be scope for the individual to elect to continue using the accruals basis if they so wish. The new property allowance will remove some landlords from income tax, whilst for others, it will provide a deduction from profits of £1,000. We will report on this after the election and when further details are known.

Our children, their families and our staff had a great time being involved in the Yaxley Festival from walking and singing in the parade to having our Pre-school stand, thank you to all involved and those that supported us. The weather has certainly challenged us this month but luckily when it is bad weather we are able to utilise our large hall where we have set up children’s gym equipment, tents, tunnels, soft mats, parachutes and more so, that the children are still engaged and use their large motor skills. However, we have also had some nice weather and this has meant lots of water play, using the giant sandpit and of course the popular mud kitchen – all of which shows the children using their amazing imaginations. During our group times we have noticed some budding

“The children are a joy” (Ofsted March 2017)

mathematicians from playing our “what’s missing” game with bugs, the children love their numbers and counting, as we incorporate it so many ways within their daily play, but some are now wanting it to be trickier! Finally, we have our taster sessions scheduled for the remainder of the summer which give you an opportunity to visit the pre-school and see what you think ready for September starts. Alternatively, we can arrange 1-2-1 visits for you and your child too, please see our Facebook or website for more information or get in touch and we can advise you the options.

Little Acorns One of our many topics this month was ‘people who help us.’ We had lots of fun activities that included dressing up in different uniforms, rescuing our toys from shaving foam, colouring firemen and we were also very lucky as one of our parents came in to talk about their profession. The children loved listening and finding out all about the different jobs. The Baby unit this month have been very busy enjoying the sunshine and have been creating crab handprints and pretending the animals are in the sea made out of jelly We would like to say a big goodbye to our pre-schoolers and

wish them all the best in their new schools. It has been lovely watching them grow and achieve during their time at Little Acorns and they will all be missed greatly. The children put a lot of work into performing on a lovely concert for all the parents and then enjoyed a party also. For more information please contact us on 01733244000 or email us on littleacorns. daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

We had a fantastic start to the summer term with our Ofsted report being published after our inspection on March 16th. We were thrilled that the behaviour and conduct of our children shone through the report in which they were described as ‘a joy!’ Some of the other highlights are: • (pupils) behave exceptionally well and contribute fully to the harmonious community that is a strong feature of their school. • Strong leadership and skilled teaching have seen the proportion of children reaching a good level of development increase over the last three years.

• By their actions and example, leaders and governors give safeguarding the highest priority. Although inspections are always daunting, we found the whole process to be supportive and rewarding. We have always been proud of our school but to have all of the achievements of the children, staff and governors recognised so publically is a huge accolade. The full report can be read by visiting our website www.holme. cambs.co.uk Although we are full for September 2017 Reception intake, we do have a handful of spaces still available across the school. Please contact Cambridgeshire admissions for details of how to apply.

Folksworth C of E It has been wonderful to see the children across the whole school getting involved in our reading challenge over half-term. The Challenge? Simple. They had to be photographed reading in usual places…and they certainly did find some unusual places! From sitting in trees, to the top of lighthouses, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing just where our readers had been on their voyage of discovery! The numbers are now in for our May Fayre which was held on the last day before half-term. As usual, the children, parents and PTA did an amazing job, and once again a substantial amount of money was raised. The PTA will decide what this will be used for, but we are already very excited about the new ideas

for the playground which they have been discussing from funds raised last year. Finally, ‘Bon Voyage’ to all the children who are going on the residential this year. We know you will have an amazing time – every year you make new friends, make lasting memories, and make us incredibly proud. We will miss you around the school!

William De Yaxley After our incredibly successful SIAMs (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools) we have now received our report. We are pleased to be able to tell that we are now officially a ‘Good’ church school. The report can be found on our website in the All About Us tab, however we would like to share with you a few examples of the report: The distinctiveness and effectiveness of William de Yaxley as a Church of England school are good • High aspirations, exemplary levels of care and nurture of each individual, both adult and child, and the recognition that each is a precious child of God with their own set of talents and

ambitions, result in all feeling valued and cherished. • Good quality, well thought through opportunities for pupils to consider the needs of others less fortunate are developed very successfully through responses such as the Bishop’s Lent Challenge. These enable pupils to contribute through messages, prayers and donations to the needy and the destitute across the world. • The strong and effective partnership with the local church community and Methodist minister have upheld the school through the most challenging times…

We would also like to celebrate our successful Bishop Stephen Lent Challenge, with the guidance of the

Worship Council and the help of our pupils and parents, we achieved the Gold Award.

Stretton Preschool At Stretton Pre-School we’re celebrating our 35th Anniversary! By the time this edition of the Yaxley Gazette goes to print we will have had our Summer Fete. We wanted this to be our biggest event ever and a real celebration. We had a large number of stalls selling all sorts of different products and a bouncy castle. We organised a tombola and invited adults to take a chance with our Water or Wine competition. We’ll let you know if the next Gazette how much was raised to go back into our busy local pre-school for equipment and resources for the children. At pre-school we have been

busy learning about farms, and also different colours and shapes. During July we hold our Graduation for our four years olds to wish them a fond farewell as they leave us to go up to Big School. We look forward to welcoming new families who will be joining us from September. From September 2017 the government is introducing an additional 15 hours per week of funded childcare for 3 and 4 year old children of working families. As with the existing ‘Universal’ 15 hours scheme this funding becomes available from the term after the child’s 3rd birthday.

Yaxley Infants In previous articles we have explained how hard all our staff work to improve reading. We believe Reading is a corner stone to achieve lifelong learning and here at Yaxley Infant School we had our very first Story Café. Parents were invited to an afternoon were they had the opportunity to take or swap books for grown-ups and then listen to a story read by the class teachers. Miss Hughes and Miss Parker read “The Shark in the Dark” by Peter Bently to the children and their parents, modelling how adults in school would share a book with the children. The parents then helped the children to get creative and create a class whale. It was so successful that we are hoping to have more

Story Café sessions soon. Keep a look out in Newsletters and our Facebook page for dates and times. Friends of Yaxley Infant school organised a stall for the annual Yaxley Festival. Being part of the community is important to us and taking part in this event was a great way to make links with the local community and raise our profile with current and prospective parents and children. The school had a pitch over both days with doughnuts at bargain prices, lucky dips and guess the teddy. Well done to Chloe Grace in Orange class for guessing the name of the teddy, Lottie.☺ Teachers, Governors and Friends all pitched in and helped to raise over £200 pounds for the school. Without the

commitment and organisation of members of the Friends, fund raising would not happen. Thank you to our wonderful Parents. The start of this half term is the being of our new SEAL theme “Changes”. Children will be learning about how to manage change and who to ask for help if they need it. It is a very busy time of year at school. Children starting in September will be taking part in transition sessions, whilst our Year 2 children will be visiting William De Yaxley School. The Junior School now have a Year 3 Facebook page which is an excellent opportunity to help with communication and ease any of your worries as parents. Please contact them for more information.

Grass seeds present a potential hazard to dogs from June until September. Dry sunny spells see a greater number of seeds falling to the ground where they can be picked up by our pets.

Grass seeds - a potential hazard Grass seeds vary in size, but all are like mini ‘darts’ with fine hairs and a sharp point at one end. The sharp point can easily pierce the skin especially where the skin is thinner such as between a dog’s toes. Because the seeds have tiny ‘micro barbs’ they do not just drop out of the skin; this is what makes them a potentially complicated problem to deal with. The most common affected area are dog’s paws but they can also get into eyes, ears and can even be snorted up noses. We have seen some rare cases where a grass seed has managed to penetrate the skin in different areas of the body, such as the ribcage.

If a grass seed enters through the skin of your dog’s paw, this is highly irritating and can become quite sore. Your dog will usually start licking its paw excessively, there may be a red lump between their toes and they may start limping. It is important to seek veterinary advice as soon as you see these symptoms. Grass seeds will continue to migrate into your dog’s paw, and can travel a considerable way if not found. It has been known for seeds to travel all the way up a dog’s limb and into the chest. Sometimes the tail of the grass seed can be seen sticking out of the swelling between your dog’s toes and a vet or owner can remove the seed easily. If the seed has travelled deeper into

the tissue, sedation is required to hunt for it. Prompt action is important – it is far easier to find a grass seed close to the skin’s surface than one that has penetrated deeper. If your dog suddenly starts to shake their head after a walk, this might indicate a grass seed in their ear canal. This requires prompt attention, because seeds can travel towards the ear drum and cause problems there. Cats can get grass seeds in their eyes and ears, but this is generally uncommon. Keeping the hair on your dog’s paws short, checking ears and paws after a walk and avoiding long dry grass whenever possible are good ways to reduce the chances of an irritating encounter with a grass seed.

O

We’ll come on to July in a minute, but first I’d like to thank everyone who came to our Open Farm Picnic & Farm Tour on 10 June, and especially those who helped us to make it happen.

ur guests brought the sunshine with them (though I wish they’d left the wind at home, as the marquee struggled to stay where it should!). We had a great time, and enjoyed conversations with friends old and new from the local area and beyond about all aspects of farming, food, and the countryside, and lots more. Thank you everyone, and we can build on this start for next year (I’m thinking trailer rides and alpaca walking?!!). Now then: July. If we’ve not harvested our rapeseed and barley by the end of this month then the sky will fall. We’ll be praying for fine weather, and smooth running machinery. If you see us around, then do give us a wave, and we’ll try not to hold up your journey too much as we

move from field to field harvesting your dinner! A quick look at my allotment tells me that spring onions, strawberries, mange tout, redcurrants, runner beans, and peas will be in season in July, so don’t forget to put them on your shopping list, unless you’ve grown them yourself (ten extra bonus points if you have!). A quick look at the BBC Food website says that fruits apricot, cherry, greengages, peach, raspberry, and tomato will be in season along with seafood crab, mackerel, sardine & sea bass, and vegetables aubergine, beetroot, broad bean, courgette, cucumber, French beans, Globe artichoke, and radish will be in season, although if you could see my French beans now, you might struggle to believe that!

Whatever you’re doing in July, whether cheering Yaxley Football team in their pre-season friendly vs Peterborough Sports on Saturday 8th July, joining in with the the Kids Tree Climbing and Minibeast Safari on Friday 28th July at Ferry Meadows, or going to the Sausage & Cider Festival at Elton Hall that weekend, thank you for buying local, seasonal, British food and supporting your local farmers. Have a great July!
