Dior

THE NEXT CHAPTER: SAUVAGE By YASMIN HARAKE

F

or the first time in ten years, Dior fragrances have forged a new territory for men. This composition by Francois Demachy harbors the very soul of a house that sets the bar extremely high. Presenting an olfactory shock with all the appeal of a great classic, an inhibited, unexpected trail and a powerfully fresh composition, Dior Sauvage is virile and confident – a radical creation for a man both authentic and true.

So, why Sauvage? Because we like it. It’s as simple as that. Because it’s snappy with a nice ring to it – a compelling name, a Dior name. A provocative Dior “Sauvage”? Yes, with the bold approach that has always driven the creation of Dior fragrances. It is a raw name that speaks of an intimate connection with one’s true nature. A “Sauvage” with the Dior touch – a balance between the primitive and the sophisticated.

A brother to Eau Sauvage? No, not even a cousin. It’s a brand new “Sauvage.” May we introduce you to the next generation of Sauvage – one that remembers the history of the house it came from. Sauvage takes some of the Dior resonance (and a hint of citrus too) leaving you with a timeless classic and an undeniable token of good taste. The new Sauvage is immediate and powerful – a declaration of freedom.

A VIVID HISTORY HELMED BY YSL BEAUTÉ

LIPSTICK AS WARPAINT

Lipstick has accomplished an exceptional feat in constantly reinventing itself. There has never been a time when it wasn’t visibly woven into the global cultural fabric. It has always been there, a constant, painting colour onto the changing pages of women’s lives. YSL Beauté was an early champion of the indefatigable power of this cosmetic legend. And so it was, 1978 saw its first lipstick ROUGE PUR born. It was an explosive success. Bold, subversive and eminently chic, ROUGE PUR strode into a brave new makeup world. A collection of heady, signature lip colours encased in a precious, now mythic polished brick, ROUGE PUR took the name of COUTURE in 2010. It perfectly embodied the cross-cultural references of its time. “It spoke of this idea of Parisian couture and Eastern allure, and all those influences that were so strongly felt in the Yves Saint Laurent universe,” explains the British writer, broadcaster and fashion historian, Amber Butchart. A precious objet d’art, dipped in gold; ROUGE PUR COUTURE held court as one of the first cosmetic products to offer a true sense of opulence and ultimate luxury.

Still, the true legacy of lipstick began much before that. The crescendo in film and the ever-growing social norm of frequenting the cinema precipitated an instrumental shift in its perception. It was a shift that ultimately placed lipstick into the hands of women everywhere. It wasn’t until World War II however, that lipstick began its compelling journey as an implicit token of women’s liberation. Worn by Suffragettes and women working for the war effort, lipstick has - in times of uncertainty and struggle – provided Them with a sense of identity, lightness and femininity and has since become known as an emblem for freedom. “It became part of the uniform of battle dress, bringing a whole new meaning to the term, ‘warpaint’. It’s a metaphor that fits for a reason,” affirms Amber Butchart. "Lipstick can be a powerful symbol of female strength; it gives you humanity and independence.”
