THESIS

CANALFRONT DEVELOPMENT This thesis on waterfront is an attempt to develop an inclusive urban space in the dense context of upcoming smart city. City’s once rich and busiest waterways are often getting turned into waste water canals, drainages. Lack of interaction and knowledge of urban dwellers about the waterfront is often the main reason for this issue.

Under the smart city mission, Kakinada is set to revitalize its canal fronts and make them active with people. A waterfront is an area of investment for the government, for middle-income groups, it is an area of recreation, and for the low-income groups (fishermen) this is the source for their livelihood. But all formal waterfront developments despite creating inclusive spaces, end up targeting specific income group people.

This thesis is an attempt to break that practice and create an inclusive mixed user development where everybody in the town has a space in this place.

Project Type: Revitalizing existing Waterfront.

Location: Kakinada, Andhrapradesh.

Area: 18000 sqm FAR: 100

Design Intent: The vision of Kakinada smart city corporation for the canal front development is to make the corridor commercial and tourism hub and bring back the water to people and celebrate the spaces for life.

The proposed development is located at once the city centre. It is at the origin of two import¬ant commercial streets of the city.

As the city’s major sea front is occupied by the port, it lacks proper recreation spaces near the water edge. This site have the potential to bring back the life to the waterfront. The site can be developed to be a destination space which hold the character of both parts of the city and character of the main stre ets and knot them together and yet stand bold at once the city centre.

Thus the project is much more than a canal front development, much more than a commer¬cial centre, much more than a tourism centre, it is the organised whole of all the typologies.

The site is situated at the junction of commercial and residential area. To its east lies the Kakinada port station and further away being the Bay of Bengal. To its west lies Medaline Island which is soon to be redeveloped into a tourist hub. To its south lies the part of old city of Kakinada. To its north lies the expanding city, government institutions and main market of the city.

In short the site was once the city centre thus the two main roads originated from this place. In the last two decades the city turned its back to the canal and started expanding towards north.

Though the site enjoys a 400 meter long waterfront edge, it has only 350 meter street edge out of which 250 meters is completely occupied by the existing flyover (fill in). Thus, this 250 meters of street edge is nothing but a 15m thick blank wall (ROW) having zero interaction with the other part of the city. So in the available 100m of street edge is made active with streets punching through the buildings leading to the canal, a series of open, semi open and enclosed spaces are created. Spaces are designed such that both formal and informal shopping co-exist help each other in building up their business. The existing weekly fish market is retained with a level difference and is divided with a dense landscaping with scented flowers. Pedestrian bridge was designed to ease the pedestrian movement by skipping the busy flyover.

PRE CAST ACC FACADE Kakinada being a young town with having a history of about 300 years has a lack of architectural identity. But there is no architectural expression or identity to the place. Long ago when dutch and britishers ruled this place they built some important government buildings which had certain language to its form and façade. After independence that language is somehow lost. No innovations are made in terms of designing a façade. In the recent years glass (one of the dangerous material, when not used to its potential) started appearing on the facades of the town. So this building should set an example for the contemporary façade system which evolves from the language which was used 300 years earlier.

URBAN DESIGN

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

This mixed use urban scale development is an attempt to create a dense, humanised, pedestrian friendly urban settlement in the influence zone of the metro station. Site planning is strategically made to demotivate residents to use their private vehicles. Pedestrian plazas, shopping complexs and gathering spaces are designed to encourage the mix of stake holders, reduce the inequalities and promote inclusive urban spaces. The brief of the project is simple, we need to design a mixed use Transit oriented development. But the site where we need to design is not that easy. The site is divided by metro line and 140m ROW road into two parts. The common approach is to connect both the sites and expect them to behave as one. Instead we flipped the coin and looked at them as two separate sites which are not linked but connected to the high speed transit.

Project Type: Transit oriented development Location: Drawrka Sector 14 Area: 1,15,000 sq.m Permissible FAR: 400 Maximum permissible built up area: 3,60,000sq.m Additional built up for EWS housing@60FAR: 54,000 sq.m Permissible ground coverage: 40% Area program contains Offices @33%, Retail and entertainment @20%, Hospitality @10%, Housing @30%, Social Infra @6.7%, of 400FAR and EWS housing @60FAR.

Strategy: To decrease the usage of automobiles and increase the usage of high speed metro transit, typologies having major footfall are zoned in the proximity of metro station. Both parts of the site are connected to Metro Island with foot over bridges. A dense urban street is created leading from informal settlement to the metro foot over, where we have designed series of semi open informal spaces to allow the local stake holders use it for selling vegetables, household groceries etc..

Dense active urban street is formed connecting the regularised unauthorised settlement and metro station. This street is designed with spaces vegetable markes, low end retail, house hold grocery shops etc... encouraging an incluisve urban space.

A series of public plazas placed along the existing dead street is designed, thus encouraging people to often use these spaces and thus creating natural survelience.

Site connected to the metro through elevated walkways, thus opening a chance of creating an active elevated urban street.

These elevated walkways can be a buffer for the people to relax and have a snack from the local street food vendors.

SEMINAR POLITICS OF DISPLACEMENT,THE CASE OF YAMUNA PAPER IV: ECOLOGY COPING WITH DEVELOPMENT PRESSURES

Abstract: The research examines the development plans drafted for the riverfront development of river Yamuna, to increase the engagement between the delhiites and the river. Despite Yamuna being the largest source of drinking water for Delhi, is also the most polluted river India ever saw. With events over the course of the last century as backdrop, the essay focuses on the last two decades of the twentieth century, to examine the relation of land and flood plains in Delhi and taking few examples of other developing cities in India and the risks posed by the river on account of encroachments and pollution.

Introduction: Over the last decade and more, Delhi has aspired to transit from a ‘walled city’ to a ‘world city’. In the process city saw a huge influx of population that it might not hold. Due to this land became scarce and its value touching the skies. Having no place to expand, to create an image for the city, flood plains of Yamuna located in the heart of the city faced encroachments such as Akshardham temple, Common wealth games village, Metro and Bus depos, multi-lane bridges over the river and many more.

Environmentalists and Development authorities: Causes for pollution of Yamuna: The holy river Yamuna, largest tributary of river Ganga, once teeming with life, is suffering from pollution and is practically dead. The Yamuna stretches for 1,370 kilometres, but only 22 kilometres of these flow through New Delhi. It is in this short stretch during which 80 per cent of its pollution is inflicted (Central Pollution Control Board, 2006).

Historically, the Delhi ‘Nullahs’ were planned to carry the excess storm water from Delhi’s hilly ‘Ridge’ sloping down to the river Yamuna to avoid flooding in the city and provide a source of fresh water along its route. Over the years, the ‘Nullahs’ have become receptors for sewage, other city and industrial waste. With rapid development, Delhi has turned its back on to the ‘Nullahs’ and ultimately polluting Yamuna (Rastogi, 2009).

Effects on encroachment on the flood plains: The construction of dams and barrages creates a false sense of security to the state and the people leading to occupation of flood plains for raising housing colonies, roads, schools, commercial buildings and even airports as has been done in Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi (Manoj Mishra, 2018). But sometimes due to heavy rainfall the river starts flooding downstream. As the floodplains are occupied, having no space to spread, flood waters destroy everything whatever lies in their path. At these alarming times unfortunately rainfall, river and nature are blamed for the mess.

Conclusions: It is evident that development authorities to convert the city into world class city, often fall out off track in the process of achieving that. The development plans for Yamuna riverfront are in lines with many Western riverfronts. But in the process of drafting these plans, development authorities should keep in mind that Yamuna doesn’t just mean the river but it includes its rich flood plains. They have to understand the nature of flood plains, its benefits and draft plans accordingly. At this eleventh hour everyone should come together and join hands to save the river and its flood plains.

DISSERTATION HOUSING FOR THE URBAN POOR

Synopsis: Due to the urbanization and many times due to lack of proper planning in government policies, large number of migrated people didn’t get a roof to live. This lead to the formation of slums. This became a major problem for the development in cities.

Under BSUP guidelines (JNNURM) many affordable houses are built at the outskirts of the city, and people are being shifted to these houses. But many of these were unoccupied! Aren’t these houses well built? (Architectural), or aren’t these houses meeting the needs of the dwellers?

•Do the EWS houses built by the government to relocate the slums meet the demands of these people? (User satisfaction) •Evaluating the built and open at settlement level on these EWS housing The research goes with primary case studies of EWS housing projects at Dwarka and Bawana. Dwarka was built under DUSIB and it follows the conventional way of construction. While Bawana was built by DSIIDC and it follows some innovative construction techniques in it. Some discussions regarding the housing polices and the way people respond to it were made with experts in their field, Pramod Adlakaha (DSIIDC) and Jeet Ram (DUSIB).

Dwarka housing was newly built (2016), and the residents here are shifted in early months of 2017. The people who are relocated here are mainly from two slums namely Kidwai nagar near AIIMS and Patparjung beside NH 24 near Akshardham. People here are from various socio economic backgrounds, some have permanent jobs, some are daily wage workers and some families have two working people. It is a G+4 storey walk up apartments having no lift. The dwelling unit is of 25sq.m carpet area having a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a separate bathroom and toilet. Cluster level design lacks in providing proper small level gathering spaces to encourage women gathering spaces. Settlement level design lacks in providing proper community level gathering space.

There are only two greens and these are gated. People having permanent jobs are happy in this housing, but people who used to work on daily wages find it hard to run their life.

The houses in the Bawana are G+2 and G+3 walk up apartments. They are designed for the industrial workers near to their work place to reduce the travel time, and give them adequate time for relaxing, socializing and looking after their families. The dwelling unit has a total carpet area of 27sq.m, having a living room, a bedroom, a bath room, a kitchen and a balcony. At settlement level instead of few greens, many small greens are located all over the settlement with some connection. All the structures are low rise with balconies making the people interact with built and open space. As the settlement is 10 years old government hold no responsibility in maintaining it and thus settlement is in a bad shape. Many of the flats were illegally occupied and many were unoccupied.

Though the places are different and built at different time periods problems faced by them are similar. They are shifted from a place where they get everything to a place they are not getting basic food, sanitation facilities. If government could provide employment along with the housing at the city corners, people are happy to shift.

HARMARA SETTLEMENT STUDY Harmara is a village in Kishangarh tehsil in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. We studied this village as a part of our settlement study in my 3rd semester. Haramara was an import landmark in Ajmer in 16th century. It used to be a center for trade and has a fort and step wells. I lead the team of 5 people and studied the market area of this settlement. We learnt how the influence of markets in city planning and how it plays a key role in revenue and planning of a city.

This market developed near the main route connecting Kishangarh and Sursura. Like any other settlement, this town grew from the market. Temporary markets became permanent with proper infrastructure then houses were built later fort was built and the step wells were dug.

This was my first experience to urban planning and this sow the seed in my heart to learn the principles of city planning.

Measure drawing and studying the town at urban scale to understand the bigger picture of how the location of markets and its stake holders influenced the town planning.

BADAMI SETTLEMENT STUDY This settlement study of the three historic cities which are interlinked with trade, transport, architecture and much more made me more curious to understand the principles of building cities that can stand the test of time!

Badami formerly known as Vatapi was the regal capital of Badami Chalukyas who ruled most of the southern India from 4th century CE to 12th century CE. The temple complex at Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole unfolds a major chapter in the history of Indian temple architecture and planning.

Aihole was an agraharam- a village with a spatial arrangement of town planning such that roads would run north south with houses on either side, leading upto the temple of the village God in the centre, thus resembling a garland (haar) around the temple.

The ancient temple town of Pattadakal built in the 7th century, it is a marvellous blend of architectural forms of the North and South India. On the bank of the softly flowing river, there are a series of Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva and a Jain temple. It is at this auspicious site that the Chalukyan kings were crowned.

AEROCITY AMRITSAR As my name in the waiting list for Urban Planning, SPA Delhi was not cleared last year, I took the job which I got through campus placements. Due to my interest and knowledge in urban planning, I was always the first option for my firm in any urban scale projects. This led me to work in the projects like Aero city Amritsar and Aero city Delhi (landscape).

Aerocity Amritsar is a large urban scale project covering 151 acres of land. It includes 65 acres of residential, 70 acres of saleable area, 11 acres of parks, 4 acres of commercial, 5 acres of institutional and 51 acres of roads, parking, paving and others. I worked in planning and detailing of the roads and in designing various public gathering spaces like parks and streets. I learnt a lot of onsite experiences in planning different hierarchy of roads, dedicated bicycling and jogging paths and detailing their junctions. I also took an active part in designing inclusive and sustainable urban parks.

Thus while simultaneously working on architecture projects I also tried my best in learning principles of urban planning.

AEROCITY delhi As my name in the waiting list for Urban Planning, SPA Delhi was not cleared last year, I took the job which I got through campus placements. Due to my interest and knowledge in urban planning, I was always the first option for my firm in any urban scale projects. This led me to work in the projects like Aero city Amritsar and Aero city Delhi (landscape).

In the lines of Aerocity Amritsar, I also worked on the Landscape of Aerocity Delhi sunken court. Teamed up with Incubis, we designed a luxury outdoor landscape filled with fruits, vegetables and flowers. Idea is that users are free to sit and interact and simultaneously can have a bit of a fruit plucked from the landscape.

I have also worked on the street nomenclature for the upcoming Dholera smart city. The nomenclature for the same is inspired from the types of feelings a human can express. I also wored in the signage board designs for this smart city.

Thus while simultaneously working on architecture projects I also tried my best in learning principles of urban planning.

COMPETITION

CONTEMPORARY VILLAGE A city is a place to work, a place to enjoy and more over it should be a place for happiness. A city is happier when its residents have good mental health. Many people go to parks, attend gatherings or often go back to their villages for a while to get rid of the hectic schedule, to experience intimacy and warmth with their loved ones. Yet they come back to their residential colonies with high boundary walls and inward looking residences, hardly knowing their neighbours…

This entry to a competition held by APCRDA is an attempt to break this anatomy by creating community gathering spaces, seamless gardens for the children to play, encouraging people to have frequent community dinners by creating multi use spaces.

And thus creating a PLACE from a SPACE where every resident can stay in private and yet respond to the community around.

Which leads to a happy Amravati.

COMPETITION

TINY LIBRARY

This tiny library is an attempt to design a vernacular library with the locally available materials in a village which is hardly know to anyone. So the big idea is to pass knowledge to the farthest places on the planet earth. The island is sited on the back waters of Godavari, at pallam near Rajahmundry with direct access to the sea and mangrove forest. This island is a home for over 1000 families.

Basic amenities like postal services, health care and education are not available here. People have to walk for at least 10kms to receive any of these facilities in the nearby town. Nobody in this village should be left behind due to lack of awareness of the outside world. Everyone in this fisherman settlement should be able to access the vast knowledge, so a tiny library is designed.

Form of the library is inspired form the fishing boat and the adjacet temple proportions.

One can only observe two typologies of buildings in this island i.e housing and the temples. Most of the architecture is single storey and only temples dominate in the skyline. There are several small shrines in the settlement but the biggest one is at the centre and connected by the major road. Most houses are made with buffalo dung as walls and clay tiles or coconut leaves as roof. Concrete started influencing the built up in the last decade.

Most people in this settlement tend to worship two entities, one the god in the shrine and the other is their profession, fishing, which feeds them food. So the main idea of the design is to mold both these believes into one. To create a space culturally active, rich in knowledge and yet brings the holiness and spirituality to the design.

The Library includes different spaces, which include discussion tank in the ground floor facing the road. The two aisles on either side of the main structure are dedicated for public use. The ground and first floor has a traditional library and the upper two floors host digital, audio and virtual library.
