Setiakon Builders Sdn. Bhd. is a company that build buildings and civil engineering projects. With a strong trust and confidence in the construction industry, the company has become a major contractor in many high-end developments in Malaysia. Over the years, Setiakon has grown and has successfully completed many famous mega projects among which is Setiakon Builders were appointed as the main contractor 8Kia, from Metro quotes, “the main developer of luxury condominium project 8Kia Peng appointed Setiakon Builders Sdn. Bhd (Setiakon) as the contractor key for the construction of the project when it is a development project outside ICity, Shah Alam. Apart from that, Deputy Chairman of I-Berhad, Datuk Eu Hong Chew said that the selection of Setiakon Builders as the main contractor of 8Kia Peng was implemented based on a transparent tender awarding process and emphasis on previous track record. Setiakon Builders company is fully committed in providing projects that have high standards and quality despite the high construction cost, the company still implement this project in compliance with the Construction Quality Assessment System (Conquas).

History Incorporated on 12th December 1994, Setiakon Builders Sdn Bhd or also known as Setiakon, started off as a subcontractor, focusing mainly on building and infrastructure works. Some of the notable projects completed were Putrajaya’s Dataran Putra, Customs, Immigration & Quarantine Complex at Tanjung Kupang Johor and Kuala Lumpur Flood Mitigation. From a humble beginning, Setiakon has grown and become a main contractor completing residential projects in Klang Valley and Johor such as Tropez Residences in Johor, 28 Dutamas and Mirage Residence in Kuala Lumpur, Mirage By The Lake in Cyberjaya and Tropicana Gardens in Selangor.

The latest string of projects that Setiakon has secured over the last few years are located in Klang Valley such as D’sara Sentral, Lumi Tropicana Residences and Tropicana Metropark Paloma in Selangor and Skylux on the Park and Arte+ Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur. Introduction Preparing Request for Work Inspection Form (RFI) was the first task I was assigned to do from Mr Jacky, one of the site supervisors at Lumi Tropicana site, which I needed to update and highlight which area wanted to do the inspection in the drawings. Most of the inspections were placed at Wellness Tower or also knowns as B2 Tower. I was given a chance to take over my colleague's work as he wanted to resign by the end of that week. For this task, all of the forms I filled in by hands and the drawings also were highlighted by hands. I need to highlight the drawings by each of the sections where the inspection took place. For example, if they request to do an inspection at the balcony, I need to highlight each unit that has a balcony. From this task, I learned that every little tiny aspect of the building needs to be inspected first before proceeding to the next stage. For example, most of the wall corners especially indoor, we must put the corner beads to make sure that the walls have even sharp corners before plastering and painting it. I also learned the methods to use some of the tools such as construction hacker, sky lift, concrete mixer, ladder and Polisher.


Site Supervision

Control the on-site work process regarding technical, functional, aesthetic, urban and environmental aspects. work closely with the site foreman, who is responsible for organising construction works on site, and report to the project manager.


Site Observation Site observation with my supervisor. With all the knowledge I have learned, I can have more understanding on all the site issues during site observation. Besides that, it also helps me to reduce the gaps in communication between workers, supervisors, and clients. Site knowledge and site experience is very important for me as an architectural student because it not only helps me to have better understanding on site construction, it also improve my communication skill with different types of peoples from different field.

Insepctions Inspection of the construction process to make sure that all materials and procedures comply with the plan and specifications. Inspection and documentation of all contractor activities. Reporting of daily on-site inspections.


Site Meeting

Meeting with clients and workers. We will discuss for the progress of work and the fault that we make while working in the site to have improvement. Responsibility for doing the report of back charge for our main-con and sub-con Report will need to be submit every end of the month for Nominated Subcontractor (NSC) while middle of the month is for Domestic Subcontractor (DSC) Submit to Mr. Derrick who’s the project manager to check and sign.

Throughout the period of industrial training, I am glad that I have learned useful skills, gained new knowledge and enhanced my performance for my future. I realized that I have gained more than I expected no matter in soft or hard skills. I also have realized what my weakness is and have slowly started to overcome it. I could sense many positive improvements in me after this internship. I even get to experience the working life of an actual construction firm and witness how things get done and how they work. Working in Setiakon Builders Sdn. Bhd. allowed me to be more involved in construction projects. During my industrial training at Setiakon as a trainee, I have learned about the importance of time management, especially when the grace period of rectifying work is almost up. Furthermore, as a person who lacks in communication skills and social skills, I have realized that communication is important in the company. As the time passed, I have slowly stepped out of my comfort zone to get to know every staff member in the firm and communicate in order to complete a certain task. I have noticed that having a good PR is important to survive in this construction world. We should know how to communicate with the client, workers and even the house owner and also learn how to accept criticism from others. Throughout my internship program, I am glad that I have the chance to be more involved in inspection work, rectifying work and others. Overall, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor Mr. Jacky Chan for giving me the opportunity, knowledge, some of his time to teach me things and such a wonderful experience. I would also like to thank all of my colleagues for willing to help and share their knowledge and experiences with me. It has been a very fruitful internship for me.
