Situato geograficamente sulla parte sud occidentale della Sardegna, ha un tratto costiero che si estende per circa 120 km, da Sant’Anna Arresi a Fluminimaggiore. Con le isole di San Pietro e Sant’Antioco che da sole hanno altri 80 km di coste arriviamo ad un totale di circa 200 km di litorale. Lungo le coste sono presenti incantevoli spiagge che si estendono per chilometri, come le spiagge di Porto Pino a Sant’Anna Arresi, Fontanamare, Plaggemesu e Porto Paglia a Gonnesa, la spiaggia di San Nicolò a Buggerru, Mare Basciu e Is Solinas a Masainas e Spiaggia Grande a Calasetta. Numerose e altrettanto interessanti per la loro bellezza sono le spiagge minori, disseminate lungo tutta la costa, ognuna si distingue dall’altra per le proprie caratteristiche. L’intensità dell’azzurro del mare cambia di spiaggia in spiaggia fino a diventare turchese, la sabbia soffice e dorata accompagna nel tragitto che porta più all’interno dove rigogliose pinete e piccole oasi di macchia mediterranea offrono riparo dal caldo sole estivo. Le Coste Sulcitane, oltre che per la loro bellezza, sono ambitissime dagli amanti del surf, Kitesurf e windsurf, perché la posizione geografica del territorio permette di sfruttare la maggior parte dei venti indispensabili per praticare questi sport. Lungo la costa incantevoli falesie e bianche pareti calcaree arricchiscono e completano il panorama, vero paradiso per gli appassionati di free climbing, i quali possono praticare questo sport in una location esclusiva come lo scoglio del Pan di Zucchero. Innumerevoli anche i percorsi trekking che si snodano lungo la costa che portano ad incantevoli calette raggiungibili solo a piedi o dal mare.

The Sulcis Iglesiente has breath-taking shores, with wonderful and colorful beaches scattered through the whole land. Situated in the South Western part of Sardinia, its seashore spreads for almost 120km, from Sant’Anna Arresi to Fluminimaggiore, excluding the isles of San Pietro and Sant’Antioco which have 80km of coasts, for a total of 200km. Along the coasts there are a plenty of beaches that extend for miles, like the Porto Pino Beach in Sant’Anna Arresi, Fontanamare, Plaggemesu and Porto Paglia in Gonnesa, the Beach of San Niccolò in Buggerru, Mare Basciu and Is Solinas in Masainas and Spiaggia Grande in Calasetta. More than this, there are several and interesting smaller beaches, bays and coves dispersed along the whole coast, each one with its unique landscapes and characteristics. The color intensity of the sea changes from beach to beach, from the deepest blue to the brightest turquoise, and the soft and golend sands brings you through the way for the inner side of the shores, where pinewoods and little maquis oasis offers a refreshing protection from the hot summer sun. The Sulcis coast are a must-visit place for all surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing lovers, because the geographic position of the territory allows to take advantage of the winds needed to practice these sports. Ogni paese saprà regalarvi momenti indimenticabili durante i festeggiamenti religiosi che si svolgono ogni anno in onore del proprio Santo Patrono. Una delle sagre più importanti è quella in onore di Sant’Antioco Martire Patrono della Sardegna, giunta alla 656° edizione, che si svolge nella città di Sant’Antioco intorno alla seconda decade di aprile. Questa manifestazione è la prima di una lunga serie di festeggiamenti religiosi che coinvolgono tutti i paesi e le parrocchie del sud ovest Sardegna fino alla fine dell’estate. Fra i più suggestivi eventi religiosi vi ricordiamo: i riti della Settimana Santa di Iglesias, l’antica celebrazione del Matrimonio Muaritano in agosto a Santadi e i famosi falò in onore di Sant’Antonio a gennaio. Innumerevoli anche le iniziative e i festeggiamenti pagani, non si contano più le sagre a tema enogastronomico: dalla sagra della pecora a quella del riccio di mare, dal famoso Girotonno di Carloforte al Carignano Music Experience. Tra le tante manifestazioni ci sono quelle legate alla musica, con due festival internazionali che si ripetono da oltre venticinque anni; Il Narcao Blues che si svolge a Narcao a fine luglio e Ai Confini tra Sardegna e jazz che si svolge solitamente d’estate a Sant’Anna Arresi.
Il Sulcis Iglesiente è ricco di tradizioni antiche che si tramandano da secoli. Sulcis-Inglesiente is rich of ancient traditions that have been passed down over centuries, every village will give you unforgettable moments during the religious events which are held every year in honor of the patron saint. One of the most important event is the „ Sagra of Sant’Antioco”, Patron of Sardinia. This event, now at its 656th anniversary, is held in the city of Sant’Antioco 15days after Easter. The religious events in the South West Sardinia are many and they last til the end of the Summer. The most important ones: the rites of the Holy Week in Iglesias and the ancient celebration of the Matrimonio Mauritano (Mauritanian Wedding) in Santadi. Initiatives and pagan ceremonies are also innumerable, wine and food festivals are uncountable, from the sheep festival to the one dedicated to the sea urchin, from the famous Girotonno in Carloforte to Carignano Music Experience. Between the many events there are also those dedicated to music, especially to Jazz and Blues with two international festivals that are held since more than twenty-five years, which bring on stage musicians of international fame. The rhythms and sounds of these two festivals will accompany you from July to September, starting in Narcao where one of the most important national blues festival is held: the “Narcao Blues”, finishing in Sant’Anna Arresi, famous for the wonderful beaches and for the unmissable “Ai Confini tra Sardegna e Jazz” (On the border between Sardinia and Jazz).

The Oasi Beach Seaside resort is in Cala Domestica, a suggestive beach just few Kilometers far from Buggerru. Calasetta conta circa 2.900 abitanti ed è situata nella parte nord occidentale dell’isola di Sant’Antioco.
POPULATION: 2900 INHABITANTS.
Inizialmente fu abitata da profughi liguri-tabarkini che intorno al 1700 lasciarono l’isola di tabarka e vennero accolti Da Carlo Emanuele III nel Regno di Sardegna. Il paese si presenta come una grande scacchiera di colori bianchi e blu, dove strade rigorosamente rettilinee si intersecano tra loro dando vita ad un centro unico nel suo genere. Al centro del paese si erge un’impotente torre sabauda, e le spiagge sono raggiungibili a piedi dal paese. Da visitare: Torre Sabauda, il Museo D’Arte Contemporanea, Il Faro di Mangiabarche, La Chiesa di S.Maurizio e tutte le spiagge di Calasetta. Dal porto di Calasetta partono i traghetti per Carloforte.

Calasetta is in the north west side of Sant’Antioco. Its inhabitants are of ligurian origins. They were refugees escaped from the island of Tabarka around 1700 and were received from Carlo Emanuele II in the reign of Sardinia. The planning of the city is quite interesting: it’s like a big chessboard where the roads are linked each others and where white and blue colours make it a very unique place. Beach can be reached by walk in a few minutes and a big Tower is found in the center of the city. To visit: the Savoy Tower, the museum of Contemporary Art, il Museo D’Arte Contemporanea, Mangiabarche lighthouse,Saint Maurizio church and all the beaches. From the port leaves the boats to Carloforte.

Carbonia è il principale centro abitato del Sulcis e conta circa 29.000 abitanti. Nata ufficialmente nel 1938 per volere del governo fascista, che la volle come simbolo del carbone nazionale da cui trae origine anche il nome. Nella prima metà del Novecento Carbonia rappresentava la più vasta e importante area mineraria e carbonifera del territorio. Ancora oggi la Città conserva l’architettura tipica del periodo, la Miniera di Serbariu simbolo della città è stata riconvertita a fini turistici ed è visitata ogni anno da migliaia di turisti. Poco distante dal centro sorgono il Parco di Rosmarino e il monte Sirai. La città è in una posizione strategica per visitare il territorio del Sulcis e dista pochissimi chilometri dalle spiagge e dalla costa sud occidentale della Sardegna. Da visitare: Museo Paleontologico, Museo di Villa Sulcis, Centro Italiano Centrale del Carbone, Nuraghe Sirai, Parco archeologico di Monte Sirai, Parco archeologico di Cannas di Sopra e il Parco di Rosmarino.

Carbonia is the main settled area in the Sulcis. It was born in 1938 by the hand of the fascist government and, as rapresented by the name, It was the national symbol of the coal (Carbonia came from the word “Carbone”, which means “coal”). During the second half of 1900 it was the main mining area of the Sulcis and, still today, the city keeps the typical structure of that period. Thousand of tourists, today, visit the mine of Serbariu, the symbol of this mining city. Rosmarino’s park and Sirai are near the city and from there you can enjoy a beautiful landscape. It’s few kilometers from the south west coast of Sardinia and its wonderful beaches. To visit: Paleontology museum,Villa Sulcis museum , Centro Italiano Centrale del Carbone, Nuraghe Sirai, Monte Sirai and Cannas di Sopra archeological parks and ,Rosmarino park.

COAL MINING MUSEUM
Il sito minerario della Grande Miniera di Serbariu a Carbonia, inattivo dal 1964, è stato recuperato e ristrutturato a fini museali e didattici. Il progetto per il recupero e la valorizzazione del sito ha reso fruibili gli edifici e le strutture minerarie che costituiscono il Museo del Carbone. La visita include: la lampisteria, sede dell’esposizione permanente sulla storia del carbone, della miniera e della città di Carbonia. Accoglie una preziosa collezione di lampade da miniera, attrezzi da lavoro, strumenti, oggetti di uso quotidiano, fotografie, documenti, filmati d’epoca e videointerviste ai minatori; la galleria sotterranea, che mostra l’evoluzione delle tecniche di coltivazione del carbone utilizzate a Serbariu dagli anni ’30 alla cessazione dell’attività, in ambienti fedelmente riallestiti con attrezzi dell’epoca e grandi macchinari ancora oggi in uso in miniere carbonifere attive; la sala argani, da cui si manovrava la discesa e la risalita delle gabbie nei pozzi per il trasporto dei minatori e delle berline vuote o cariche di carbone.
The mining site of the Great Coal Mine of Serbariu in Carbonia was closed in 1964 and has been restored and modified to become a museum and educational centre. With the development of this project to recover and improve the site, it is now possible to visit the surface area and the buildings that constitute the Coal Mining Museum. Visiting the Coal Mining Museum: The Lamp Room houses the permanent exhibition on the history of coal, the Serbariu mine and the town of Carbonia. The exhibition includes a precious collection of mining lamps, work tools, things of everyday usage, photos, documents, short film clips from the period and interviews with the miners. The Underground Gallery shows how mining methods have changed over the decades from the 1930s until closing down. It has accurately reconstructed spaces enriched with work tools and machinery which were used in the past or that are still in use in coal mining. Winding Engine House - the winding engine was used to move the cages up and down the shaft in order to transport the miners and the wagons.

Carloforte è un comune di circa 6.200 abitanti ed è l’unico centro abitato dell’isola di San Pietro. L’isola conserva una forte influenza Tabarkina e Genovese, infatti i liguri nel 1738 lasciarono l’isola di Tabarka e si stabilirono su quest’isola per concessione del Re di Sardegna Carlo Emanuele III. Ancora oggi Carloforte conserva la lingua, la cultura, le tradizioni e l’architettura di questi popoli. La popolazione, le spiagge e le bellezze naturalistiche, fanno di quest’isola una delle mete turistiche più ambite del territorio. Il celebre “Girotonno”, una delle più importanti manifestazioni enogastronomiche regionali, ogni anno a fine maggio attira migliaia di visitatori da ogni parte del mondo. COMUNE DI FLUMINIMAGGIORE - SITI TURISTICI TEMPIO DI ANTAS Il tempio di Antas scoperto nel 1836 dal generale La Marmora e ricostruito nel 1967 ad opera dell’archeologo Barreca, si divide longitudinalmente in tre parti: pronao, cella e adyton bipartito; il prospetto è tetrastilo e si presenta con quattro colonne frontali e due laterali. Le colonne, alte circa otto metri, sono sormontate da capitelli in stile ionico. Il pavimento della cella, alla quale si poteva accedere mediante due ingressi laterali, presenta una parte del mosaico con bordo nero; nella parte sacra del tempio (adyton) si aprono due vaschette impermeabilizzate per le cerimonie di purificazione (abluzioni); nell’ultima parte era sicuramente posizionata la statua del Sardus Pater della quale è stato rinvenuto solo un dito della mano, che suggerisce le dimensioni colossali (circa 3 m.) della scultura La conferma della datazione del tempio e l’adorazione del Dio Sardus Pater Babai è data dall’iscrizione, indicante un restauro, posta sull’epistilio (nel frontone del tempio): “In onore dell’imperatore Cesare Marco Aurelio Augusto, Pio Felice, il tempio del Dio Sardus Pater Babi, rovinato per l’antichità, fu restaurato a cura di Quinto (?) Celio (o Cocceio) Procuro”; la dedica è datata 213-217 d.C. Il sito è aperto tutto l’anno

This temple was discovered in 1836 by General La Marmora and reconstructed in 1967 by archaeologist Barreca. It is divided longitudinally in three parts, the pronaos, the cell, and the adyton. The façade is in tetrastyle in that it contains four frontal columns and two lateral columns. The columns are about eight meters high and are topped by ionic capitals. The pavement of the cell, within which one could enter by way of two lateral entrances, still contains a part of a mosaic with black borders. In the sacred part of the temple (adyton), there are two water containers used for purification ceremonies; at the other end of the temple, the statue of the god Sardus Pater was certainly positioned of which only a finger, of three meters in size, was found but suggests a colossal dimension of the statue. The confirmation of the temples date and dedication to god Sardus Pater Babai is given by the inscription indicating a restoration, shown on the front of the temple and reads: “In honor of Emperor Cesar Marco Aurelio Augusto Pio Felice, the temple of god Sardus Pater Babi, ruined by antiquity, was restored by care of Quinto (?) La presenza dell’uomo in questo territorio ha lasciato i segni già dall’epoca Neolitica e Nuragica, come testimoniano le Domus de Janas, i numerosi nuraghe e le Tombe dei Giganti. Non mancano tracce del passaggio dei Fenici, dei Cartaginesi e dei Romani. Oggi l’economia si basa soprattutto sull’agricoltura, grazie ai terreni fertili che la circondano e al grande lago artificiale. Ottima anche la viticoltura, soprattutto quella del Carignano del Sulcis. Dal punto di vista ambientalistico il territorio è piuttosto interessante, adagiato su dolci colline si affaccia sul Golfo di Palmas e sulla spiaggia di Porto Botte, ottima location per gli amanti degli sport acquatici come il windsurf e il kitesurf. Da visitare: La Torre Pisana, Chiesa di San Pietro, Chiesa di Santa Marta, Parco comunale di Is Maras e la spiaggia di Portobotte.

POPULATION: 2100 INHABITANTS. Giba was settled during the Neolitic and Nuragic period as shown by the Domus de Janas, many nuraghe and the Giants’ tombs. We also find traces of Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman settlements. Its economy is based on agricolture thanks to the productive enviroment and a big artificial lake. The viticolture is very good and well rapresented by the famous wine Carignagno del Sulcis. Its area is very interesting beacuse of its position: it’s near the Palmas’ gulf and the beach of Porto Botte, a great location for those who love windsurfing and kitesurfing. Il Comune di Musei conta circa 1600 abitanti e si trova al centro della piana del Cixerri. La nascita del centro abitato risale ai primi anni del ‘600, quando i Padri Gesuiti costruirono la chiesa e il convento dedicati a Sant’Ignazio di Loyola e varie costruzioni tipiche campidanesi, realizzate in mattoni crudi “ladiri” e tegole sarde. Tra le stradine del paese è un alternarsi di moderno e tradizionale dove si trovano ancora molte case tipiche, con un piccolo cortile e gli immancabili forni a legna e l’orticello. Nella piazza, adiacente alla chiesa si trova l’imponente casa padronale dei nobili Asquer, a breve distanza sorge “Sa domu e sa pala”, un edificio, in terra cruda, di notevoli dimensioni tra i pochi rimasti in Sardegna. Poco distante dalla piazza della chiesa sorge il Parco Etfas, simbolo della rinascita agricola del luogo in cui dominano quattro antichi silos dove veniva conservato il raccolto. Da vedere: Parco Etfas, la pineta, la chiesa di S. Ignazio di Loyola, Casa Asquer.

Walking through the town you can see both modern and traditional buildings. Typical examples of tradition are the constructions made up of „ladiri” and Sardinian shingles and the houses with a small garden and their wood ovens. Other important places are the mansion of Asquer and „ Sa domu e sa pala”, one of the last Sardinian buildings in „raw ground”. l Villaggio Minerario di Rosas è un originale complesso turistico ricavato in un’antica miniera che iniziò l’attività estrattiva alla fine dell’800. Oggi dopo un lungo ed accurato restauro il villaggio offre un servizio d’accoglienza turistica molto apprezzato dai visitatori. La struttura dispone di 50 posti letto ricavati nelle ex abitazioni dei minatori, perfettamente restaurate e dotate di tutti i comfort. A breve altri 50 posti letto saranno disponibili, in formula ostello, nei locali della ex foresteria. La struttura dispone anche di un ristorante, un bar e una pista da ballo all’aperto. Il fiore all’occhiello del villaggio sono le strutture museali, l’intero sito è una testimonianza di archeologia industriale, con tutti gli impianti della laveria perfettamente funzionanti. Lo staff della struttura attento e preparato vi guiderà nelle visite alle gallerie dove si svolgeva l’attività estrattiva e lungo i diversi percorsi museali. Il Villaggio Minerario di Rosas dispone di sala convegni, spazi espositivi per artisti ecc. , la location è ideale per la realizzazione di banchetti ricevimenti e matrimoni, questi ultimi è possibile ufficiarli sia con cerimonie laiche che religiose.

Nuxis è un comune che conta circa 1700 abitanti e sorge ai piedi del monte Tamara, una delle montagne più alte di questa zona. PISCINAS Piscinas con i suoi 862 abitanti è il più piccolo comune della provincia di Carbonia-Iglesias. L’economia del paese è basata su agricoltura e pastorizia, il suo territorio è pianeggiante e a tratti collinoso. La presenza dell’uomo si può ipotizzare già dal Neolitico come testimoniato dai vari siti archeologici nelle campagne circostanti. Dai documenti storici si sa che nel 1337 l’abitato di Piscinas era giurisdizionalmente unito a quello di Giba, nel 1587 fu assegnato alla famiglia sardo-spagnola di Pietro Salazar di Iglesias. Alla fine dell’800 i Salazar edificarono, nei dintorni dell’odierno abitato, un’elegante villa di campagna che nel 2002 l’Amministrazione comunale ha acquistato e ristrutturato. Oggi L’edificio è ben visibile all’ingresso del paese, incastonato in un bellissimo parco, ricco di piante ed essenze arboree rarissime, numerosi anche gli esemplari di piante secolari. As proof of the presence of man in the Neolitic period there are many archeological sites in the surronding contry land. From 1337 to 1587 Piscinas and Giba were unified and then Piscinas became property of the Salazar family. The family build a big house-place that, in 2002 was taken by the admistration of the city. Today the building is visible at the entry of the city and it’s in a big and beautiful park rich of many varieties of plants and secular trees. COMUNE DI PORTOSCUSO Portoscuso è un comune costiero che conta circa 5.300 abitanti. La nascita del paese risale al XVI secolo è attribuita all’insediamento dei pescatori e dei corallai. Successivamente i pescatori si dedicarono alla pesca del tonno e vi risiedevano solo durante la stagione della pesca, in seguito si trasferirono definitivamente nel piccolo villaggio attorno alla Tonnara oggi emblema storico del Paese. Il resto dell’abitato è sorto nel XVII secolo ed è situato di fronte all’isola di San Pietro. La cittadina è anche nota per il fatto che ospita uno dei poli industriali più grandi dell’isola “Portovesme” ma le spiagge e la costa fanno di Portoscuso una delle località balneari più suggestive del sud ovest Sardegna. Tra le spiagge più belle figurano la piccola ma incantevole Caletta Paleturri e la suggestiva Porto Paglietto. Due fra le più importanti fiere di tutta la Sardegna, nate per valorizzare e far conoscere i prodotti agroalimentari, turistici e artigianali del territorio del sud ovest e dell’intera isola. San Giovanni Suergiu conta circa 6.000 abitanti distribuiti nello stesso comune e in diverse piccole frazioni. Il centro attuale ha probabili origini bizantine, mentre le domus de janas della necropoli di Is Loccis Santus testimoniano un primo popolamento risalente al Neolitico Finale. Nel territorio sono diverse le testimonianze anche della civiltà nuragica. Santadi è un paese di circa 4.000 abitanti vicino alle imponenti montagne che ospitano il bosco di Pantaleo, una delle aree verdi più importanti del territorio. GROTTE IS ZUDDAS
La cavità è costituita da rocce dolomitiche risalenti a circa 530 milioni di anni. La grotta, ancora in attività, conta diverse sale ognuna delle quali si differenzia per la particolarità delle concrezioni. Lungo il percorso turistico che si sviluppa per circa 500 metri si possono ammirare stupende e talvolta imponenti concrezioni. The cave develops is composed of dolomitic rocks dated about 530 millions of years ago. The cave, still operant, is made of different chambers each one of them is different for the peculiarity of their concretions. sant’anna arresi Sant’Anna Arresi è un comune di circa 2700 abitanti. Il suo territorio è ricco di testimonianze del passato, fra i più importanti il Nuraghe Arresi, il villaggio Nuragico Coi Casu, la fonte nuragica, le tombe dei giganti, nuraghe Sarri e numerosi monoliti sparsi nel territorio. Il fiore all’occhiello di Sant’Anna Arresi è Porto Pino, località turistica che vanta un tratto di spiaggia di circa quattro chilometri caratterizzata da finissima sabbia bianca circondata da una splendida pineta. Poco distante dalla spiaggia, sorge rigogliosa la pineta di Candiani con le sue incantevoli calette di sabbia e rocce basse. Un altro elemento di spicco del territorio è la produzione vitivinicola che trova la sua fulgida collocazione tra le colline di Sant’Anna Arresi. Durante il periodo estivo viene svolta una delle più importanti rassegne musicali della Sardegna “Ai Confini Tra Sardegna E Jazz” che da circa trent’anni porta sul palco della piazza del nuraghe artisti di fama internazionale. Da visitare: Il Nuraghe Arresi, il villaggio nuragico “Coi Casu”, i diversi siti archeologici, la pineta di Candiani e tutte le bellissime spiagge del territorio.

The hills of this land and its productive vineyards give us a unique and tasty wine. The feather in the cap of Sant’Anna Arresi is Porto Pino, a tourist place with a 4 kilometers fine and white sandy beach surrounded by a wonderful pinewood. Not far from this beach there is Candiani pinewood and its charming sandy inlets and rocks. During the summer there is ” Ai Confini Tra Sardegna e Jazz”, an important music exhibition. Sant’Antioco è una cittadina di circa 11.400 abitanti che si trova nell’omonima isola, collegata da un ponte al resto della Sardegna. In passato l’isola si chiamava Sulci, in seguito, in onore del Santo Martire, di cui una leggenda narra che arrivò nell’isola a bordo di una barca alla deriva, venne chiamata Sant’Antioco. Proprio in onore del Santo 15 giorni dopo Pasqua si organizza la più antica sagra della Sardegna. Sant’Antioco è uno dei comuni più ricchi di storia e archeologia del Sulcis, infatti sono diversi i siti archeologici, i musei e le chiese che testimoniano la storia di questa cittadina. Il centro abitato si divide tra il moderno e il fascino del passato, ammirevoli il centro storico, il lungomare e il più recente porticciolo turistico. A completare il quadro turistico dell’isola ci ha pensato la natura regalando paesaggi incantevoli e spiagge incontaminate.

Sant’Antioco is a small island linked to Sardinia by a bridge. In the past the island was called Sulci and later the name was changed with the Saint’s one. The legend tolds that Antioco was arrived by chance on a drifting ship. Every year, 15 days after Easter the Sagra in honor of the Saint is celebrated and it’s the eldest in Sardinia. The center of the city is divided into modern and ancient and in the city there are lots of museum, churches and archelocical sites attesting the ancienty of the city. To complete the picture of this suggestive land there is the variety of beaches, inlets and charming landscapes surrounding it. TRATALIAS Tratalias è un piccolo paese del Basso Sulcis di circa 1100 abitanti situato su una vasta pianura che si affaccia sul Golfo di Palmas. Sono diversi i siti archeologici che testimoniano la presenza dell’uomo su questo territorio già dalla preistoria. Il centro abitato di Tratalias in origine sorgeva più a valle rispetto a quello attuale ma a causa dei pericoli indotti dalla costruzione del lago artificiale di Monte Pranu, negli anni 70 il vecchio centro fu abbandonato e gli abitanti si trasferirono nel nuovo paese costruito su un rilievo poco distante. Con dei lavori di recupero partiti circa vent’anni fa gli edifici di importanza storica del vecchio paese di origine medioevale sono stati completamente recuperati, tra le diverse costruzioni nel cuore del borgo sorge la cattedrale romanica di Santa Maria, edificata all’inizio del XIII secolo. Oggi la maggior parte delle abitazioni son state riconvertite a fini turistici e ospitano laboratori artigiani e diverse strutture ricettive. Da Visitare: Il borgo medioevale e la sua chiesa, il lago e il parco di M.Pranu e i diversi siti archeologici.

Since 70s the center of the city was situated in a different position but, because of the danger caused by the artificial lake of Monte Pranu, the population had to move. VILLAMASSARGIA Villamassargia è un comune di circa 4.000 abitanti situato nella Valle del Cixerri. Anche in questo territorio non mancano le testimonianze storiche del passato come diversi nuraghi, Il castello medievale di Gioiosa Guardia e la Miniera di Orbai. Ancora oggi il centro storico del paese conserva le tipiche case campidanesi, costruite con i caratteristici mattoni in ladiri e tegole sarde. Villamassargia è nota soprattutto per la produzione dei manufatti tessili infatti, nei vari laboratori artigianali si producono tappeti ed arazzi nel rispetto della tradizione. A pochi chilometri dal centro, sulla strada per Cagliari, si trova un bellissimo bosco di ulivi plurisecolari, “S’Ortu Mannu” , al suo interno fa bella mostra “Sa Reina”, la Regina, un ulivo con una circonferenza alla base di 16 metri, ritenuto il più grande del Mediterraneo. Villamassargia dista pochi chilometri dalle più belle spiagge e dai vari siti turistici del Sulcis. Da visitare: Castello di Gioiosa Guardia, Miniera di Orbai, parco S’Ortu Mannu, Falesia Sa Fruccona Manna, chiesa della Madonna della Neve, chiesa Del Pilar.

POPULATION: 4000 INHABITANTS. Villamassargia is between Carbonia and Iglesias. As everywhere is Sardinia, even in this area there are many historical evidences such as nuraghe. The medieval castle of Gioiosa Guardia and the mine of Orbai. In the center of the city we find tipical houses build up with ladiri and sardinian tiles. Carpet and arazzi are weaved in the various laboratories according the tradition. S’Ortu Mannu, in the way to Cagliari, is a beautiful wood of secular olive trees where there is Sa Reina, The Queen,the biggest olive tree in the Mediterranean area. To visit: Gioiosa Guardia castle, Orbai mine, S’Ortu Mannu, Falesia Sa Fruccona Manna, Pilar’s church and the church of Madonna della Neve.
