10,000 MILES IN 8 YEARS — Doris Mellott, of New Oxford, recently completed 10,000 miles of walking. Mellott joined the YWalking Club at the Hanover YMCA on Jan. 31, 2001 and completed her goal on May 21, 2009, just four days before her 72 birthday. Over the past 8 years, three months and 21 days, Mellott logged her miles at the Y’s indoor and outdoor tracks, the North Hanover Mall, most of the streets of Hanover, a housing development in Hampton and in eight other states. Fresh produce available to seniors The Adams County Office for Aging, Inc. (ACOFA) in cooperation with the Pa. Department of Agriculture will again distribute fruit and vegetable vouchers to qualifying adults age 60 and over; districbution began Monday. County residents are eligible if they are 60 years of age or older and have a 2008 gross annual income less than $20,036 for a single person and $26,955 for a married couple. Each eligible senior will receive four $5 vouchers for a total of $20 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables purchased at approved farmer’s markets. The produce must be “grown or growable” in Pennsylvania. To receive vouchers seniors need to go to ACOFA or any one of the seven senior centers in Adams County and bring identification to verify age and residence. The income is selfdeclared. This means that by signing for the vouchers, the person is stating that they are income-eligible. There is no need to bring financial documents. A signed, completed Farmers Market Proxy Form is required for anyone picking up vouchers for another eligible person. These forms are available at ACOFA and the senior centers. Vouchers will be distributed on a first come first served basis. Each person may only receive one set of vouchers. Adams County Office for Aging, Inc. is located at 318 W. Middle St., Gettysburg. ‘Adventures in Adams County History’ trip set Adams County Historical Society, ACHS, will present its “Adventures in Adams County History” bus trip on July 25. The trip will be hosted by Timothy H. Smith, research assistant at ACHS. He will take the group to several sites of historical interest in the county. This year’s sites will include a visit to a marker along the Mason Dixon Line, and the Lower Marsh Creek and Flohrs Church Cemeteries. Also included will be the locations for several scenes filmed in the county associated with the movies “Gettysburg” and “Birch Interval.” The fee is $35 for ACHS members/$45 non-members and includes an all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar at Hoss’s Family Steak & Sea House on Route 30. Register by calling the Society at 334-4723 ext. 201 or online at www.achs-pa.org no later than July 6. The Adams County Historical Society offers these educational programs as part of its mission to collect, protect, and educate the public about the rich history of Adams County. The Society relies on its generous donors and members and, in part, on the General Operating Support Grant for the official county historical society from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, matched by an appropriation from the Adams County Commissioners, for its financial support.
