That is why light enactment plays an increasingly bigger role. The Shanghai Museum of Glass is a converted former glass factory with a gigantic overall floor space of 30,000 m². It is one of only very few private museums in China, that pursue this modern museum didactic approach. The exhibition organizers send visitors on a discovery tour through the history of glass and its manufacture. Mirror-like black glass elements reflect the LED ribbons and screens distributed all over the room, generating a sparkling, multi-dimensional spatial atmosphere. Thus the interaction, interdependencies and the influences of epochs, continents, materials and people in the realm of glass art, glass craftsmanship and the glass industry are presented in an illustrative way. In the interplay with light, glass is a fascinating material. In the Kids Museum of Glass, for instance, visitors will find room elements of colored glass, such as the museum shop or the magic cube with interesting vistas and a colored play of light. The Kids Museum is the first of its kind in China. Like the Shanghai Museum of Glass it is located in the popular G+ Park. The little visitors are received in an angular and cool ambience characterized by striking colors, decors and large illuminated signs. The kids, aged between four and ten years, are allowed to touch everything and are invited to interact. The Yang Design Museum, located in a converted former power station, is also new. It’s China’s first private museum of industrial design and exploits a sophisticated lighting control. In the entrance area, a room installation of T-boxes arouses the visitor’s curiosity. It takes the shape of a free-standing screen (md xxx), backlit in changing colors via a light-management system. This creates interesting structures with a clear design statement. In the historical pavilion, light is filtered through a flexible membrane of Lycra fabric, fixed at some points on a room-high metal grid. When the light’s colors and moods change, the lit wall seems to breathe and instill new life into the historical bicycles and chairs, flat irons
