In case events and exhibitions the seeds can be pulled out again, creating new spaces for outdoor activities, commercial spots and showrooms, changing completly Corso Matteotti’s space.

Once the economy of the city is brought back to a new life, the seeds could be collocated inside the new buildings, as closure of the ground floor spaces.

s

What if the solution to a big problem could just be a small little seed? What if the things we miss could temporary be recollocated close to where they were? This seed, icon of regrowth, could be the place where all the activities for the rebirth of the city could take place! One seed, that multiplied and assembled (thanks to its flexibility and semplicity of construction), could become the right place for everything. A class, a shop, a meeting point, a mini audtorium, etc. All sorts of micro activities that could help Crevalocore in its recovery.

RESTART

s

How can citizens regain their spaces, their city?

It all starts with memories and new ideas. The city hall becomes the heart of the process. Our choice is to preserve this icon, the icon of the old Crevalcore, that now becomes the starting point of this new story. A place of debate, exchange of ideas, where everyone’s inspirations could contribute to an completly new path.

TOMORROW

The seeds, founding elements of our design strategy, are highly flexible architectural devices. Their use is stricktly conected to the needs of the citizens, they can be moved, assembled and adjusted to make them suitable for any kind of activity. After the earthquake, the seeds could be assembled outdoor to replace all the functions lost due to the damages. When the construction of the new buildings is completed, the seeds will be moved inside, creating the new street side of Corso Matteotti. During the “special events” ,such as festivals or exhibitions, they can be easily moved ouside again, thanks to their modularity. The seeds measures are 1,20x3,00x3,00. Joint togheter the seeds can create a large amount of different spaces for different activities that change totally the perception of the principal street of the city.

MAIN PROJECT THEMES A depressed town center, irreparably compromised by the earthquake of 2012. Is Crevalcore only this? Crevalcore is an opportunity, a fertile land waiting for a change. A change that is not constrained by what surrounds the town but inspired by the possibilities of the world in which it’s set! Preserving the cultural business vocation of the city, we decided to create a flexible space for a spread ? laboratory in sinergy with the productive reality of the local territory, directly linked with the public space, ? ? ! the people and the city.

The choice of using light structures, is given by the great possibility to intervene on the conformation of the public space at ground level, so as to generate a continuous alternation functional, just to diversify the supply during the year.

FUNCTIONS

!

The public space plays a predominant role in the design choice: the ground floor of the new buildngs becomes part of the public space. Completly opened, thanks to the flexibility of the seed’s system, the ground floor of the shops, the showrooms and the laboratories is now fluidly integrated with Corso Matteotti.

The city is often a totality of relationships and tensions that develop day after day; this process leads to transformations which cause a loss of identity and recognisability of the historical fabric. Crevalcore, on the contrary, is an example of town which preserves its own structure of ancient city thanks to an economic and productive system settled beyond the old town centre. The settlement of Crevalcore, which is in the middle compared with other Emilian cities such as Modena, Bologna and Ferrara, is a further incentive to expand the synergy between the old town centre and local industries.

TERRITORIAL STRATEGY The study tends to the recovery of the economic, social, cultural and creative dimension of the city through a planning action starting from the launch of an external incentive. The common objective is to activate fertile relationships able to determine the development of new productive/creative processes, which can lead to a new vision of inhabiting, living and working in this place. The historical centre of Crevalcore could be the ideal landscape to host new productive additional in relation with the city itself.

What makes Crevalcore different from other places?

PLACE OF LEISURE

EARTHQUAKE, a reflection starting from the concept of emergency, intended as lack or deprivation of one of the main qualities of the human being. The house, intended as a place hosting the different human activities: domestic, work, recreational and aggregative ones. The project starts from these premises, that is to say the reactivation of all these procedures which are replaced in the historical fabric of the ancient city; through a modular matrix, the town thus becomes a new architecture. The minimum house module becomes the cornerstone of the proposal which investigates the concept of minimum living, first as an answer to an emergency (tent, container, prefabricated building), second as a driving force for a new settlement.

SOIL/GROUND PROJECT parking

In relation to the transformations of the old town centre the main axis, which is no more vehicular, is now reserved to cycles and pedestrians. Through the use of different materials and permeability, it defines a soil/ground able to recognise the limits of the new public areas, the road and the standing zone, by replacing the car parks in relation to the new configuration of the project.

P

COURTS PROJECT By observing the historical fabric of the ancient city we can recognise the presence of empty spaces (courts, open areas…) which integrate the existing buildings. The project aims to value, to requalify and to preserve these places, by imagining them as interest points/points of interest compared to the new functional plan.

HISTORICAL NEUTRAL APPROACH

Pavilions are located between mineral-based and green environments. The historic arches are preserved all along the street but these are divided into two directions to bring the pedestrian inside the core of the block made up of garden space. These buildings develop a dialogue with the context around them. In opposition, satellites could be termed invasions of the ancient buildings. The rehabilitation of and extensions to existing buildings allows for a dialogue to be set up between two different programs. The project becomes the means for bringing together the analytical tools of context and programmatic diversity. The goal of these dialectics is to integrate a new architecture that is capable of blending ancient heritage with contemporary spaces and uses.

DIALECTIC 5. DIALOGUE WITH THE CONTEXT OR INVASIONS OF ANCIENT BUILDING

The abstract facades stand in bold contrast to the historical elevations. The widely recognizable Roman layout which formed the basis of this city should not engender a pastiche project but rather should lead to a different perception of the elements: building proportions, facades and the arches which shape the Crevalcore urban landscape. These elements are the foundations of future buildings. The modular grid of facades is determined by the need to provide light for the program inside. There are three kinds of grids: ‘aerated’ - which take the arches as a model for public circulation; ‘intermediate’ - for public programs; and ‘tight’ - for private programs inside the building. This system allows for adaptations for any need that arises.

DIALECTIC 4. AND ARCHITECTURAL

The different sizes and positions of the voids determine the spatial partition of the programs. The big plots are the sites of the main buildings (pavilions) while the smaller plots preserve the existing buildings, which will be rehabilitated and expanded upon by a different structure in order to form a programmatic duality (satellites). Each pavilion has an associated public space: a mineral square which extends up to the main street and a landscaped garden in the heart of the block. These five pavilions are designed to accommodate a cultural centre, a shopping center, a hotel, research facilities and an entertainment area. The satellites are annexes of these buildings designed to expand the reach of the pavilions’ programs to throughout the whole city.

The main street, the axis of the project, has to contain landmarks and city limits. Four high volumes, the same height as the church tower, form the skyline of the city and are adjacent to three squares: the entrances (city limits) and center.

DIALECTIC 2. ENTRANCES AND CENTER

The first operation of this project was identifying the dialectic between void and solid in the historic city. All along the street, the earthquake created an alternation that goes against the uniformity of ancient city. Today, the program of repairing Crevalcore must take this new landscape into consideration. Voids should be replaced by a new uniform system consisting of mixed programs.

DIALECTIC 1. VOIDS AND SOLIDS

What is the role of architecture in a world of entropy? Our built environment decays; our cultural traditions decay. In this world, architecture is neither the physical object of stone upon stone, nor the spatial voids formed by the stacking of stone upon stone; it is the armature of the in-between and the framework of a yet unanswered question of history. In this context, what position can hold up to the paradoxical relationship of old, new and the process of decay? The architectural intervention within this context inevitably must take on a light touch, respecting the projections of the historical and cultural, while actualizing the present condition. Extending from this thought, how might the architectural interventions of the urban landscape – a theater of the new – be reduced? Un Teatro del Nuovo attempts such a reduction, utilizing the simplest of architectural tools – the line – made manifest in one of the most banal architectural systems – the scaffolding. An infinite potential unfolds from its open-end application. But what form could such a system take? In this framework, the line might become an icon, a cultural archetype, an event or a platform for narrative unfolding. Could the rich history of Italy be summed up in a singular reading? Why should it be? From the line, a vast number of moments might emerge: the Cyclorama, the Shakespearean – Romeo and Juliet Tower, the Marionette, the Opera, the Cinema, the Divine Comedy, the Basilica. These archetypal projections become spatial experience. The simplicity of the line moves throughout the city, reinforcing the degradation of the existing without masking it. History is placed on display – a performance – reactivated through a re-invigoration of the layers of the urban landscape: above, within and below.

Crevalcore city, founded in the 13rd century, has a particular post-seismic project situation. Beyond a simple restoration, it raises the question of preservation with a special care of historic memory transmission. This project will be based on a first observation regarding the important patrimonial value of the city, arousing an approach of preservation, and thus, of support. In a second place, the project will be intensifying and will reveal the city´s configuration and layout, in the archetypal charateristics of the antique city. First of all, The project will propose a global answer by implanting a vertebral column to the Giacomo Matteotti street forming the cardo. This one is composed by an important concrete arched structure enabling the structural support of all the distorted buildings. The classical feature of the arche has been borrowed for its structural qualities of crossing of long ranges. Beyond a technical answer, it intensifies the cardo of the city creating a new wandering and a fresh eye on the city with a spaces hierarchy. The dialogue between the existing front and the project will enable to highlight and to agtgrave the current rhythm of the arches on the ground floor. Like a body living, the backbone will develop arborescences supporting the city. Moreover, the project will answer a burning question, the densification of historical centers in order to fight against the urban spreading. Indeed, the squeleton will enable to support light extensions, made in wood, put on roofs and will underline various horizontal strata of the city construction. The distorted buildings will be restored to welcome cultural equipments, media libraries and showrooms as we care about revitalizing the old center. The city hall building will be entierely rehabilitated to welcome a market place on several levels. The ground floor, open on the city, will create a continuity with the San Silvestro Church square, surrounded by mobile businesses. This central space will embody the forum of the antique city. This project is founded on a global process, adapting itself to specific situations, and may be compared with a urban sewing approach. It cannot be reduced to a formal or technical scale, it integrates the patrimonial, human, economic and poetic context in favour of the urban wandering. Plus, its evolutionary feature will allow potential densifications in the future.
