EDITOR’S NOTE

SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE EDITION 2

By the time you receive your new edition of Superyacht Knowledge the 2022 Summer season will be over, and by all accounts, and from what I hear, it will be remembered as one of the best on record.

Considering the problems, or maybe because of them, our fleet of yachts have been kept incredibly busy with Owners, or Charter Guests, seemingly wanting to be at peace on the water. As expected, many yachts have not travelled long distances, held back, one would assume, by the cost of fuel, but they have still needed Yacht Agents, these lynchpins of our industry have been kept very busy, opposite to the dearth of clients many had through 20/21.

Yacht Agents have a very narrow window of opportunity to make hay, only a few summer months, during which they have to make the income they need to carry them through to the following year, while at the same time keeping their qualified staff in employment. Captains/ Owners may complain about agency invoices but the nature of professional yachting is such that if you want Agents to maintain the quality services yachts need, they have to, in some way, pay for the winter months.

Let’s now delve into the new edition of Superyacht Knowledge, as readers of Edition 1 know, it is an eco-friendly concept that allows companies the space to explain themselves fully to a perfectly targeted readership that own or operate the worlds fleet of large professionally run yachts. Many Captains find their suppliers through referral, seeing this in operation on my www.SuperyachtCaptains.com forum is interesting, who is good, who is exceptional, who falls by the wayside, all intriguing stuff, but in Superyacht Knowledge I endeavour to take the best of these companies and many others that I have known personally over many years a step further and to hopefully make life onboard a great deal easier.

Wouldn’t planet Earth be an incredible place if just one company efficiently supplied fuel, only one crew, only one agency services, but the world does not work like that. Certainly not the world of luxury yachting. At a guess 95+% of Owners have only one vessel. To compare this to the commercial shipping industry, where one exceptional company owns upwards of 700 vessels, the yachting industry is fragmented and massively over regulated compared to my time at sea in the 80’s. It is tough to access in scale as it is divided into small units, each one needing the professional services of many specialist companies to operate.

New companies are constantly appearing as Crew move shoreside or individuals break from established businesses, they have 1 or 2 yachts/friends to cater to, rarely enough to survive, many cut corners to bring down prices as charged by the more established and regulated firms, many disappear, but the good ones thrive. They grow because of Knowledge, Commitment, Networking etc. and believe me just those three points alone are all expensive ideals to fulfil. Knowledge costs time, money, the best knowledge is not free, be it subscriptions to specialised platforms, time spent at conferences, courses etc., commitment is not having vacations, missing home and family, putting the company first above all other things, and networking is a lifelong task, from the day you step into this industry to the time you step out, every day is a networking day, everybody your persona crosses is a possible future client.

Superyacht Knowledge magazine encompasses those three, for our clients we disseminate their knowledge and offer it to our readership, without knowledge a yacht would never leave its berth and this magazine would never be published. Commitment, providing editorial for Superyacht Knowledge takes commitment from our clients, as does producing the magazine itself and it does not end there. It then has to be delivered onboard, if promises are made in this industry, they have to be upheld and it takes commitment. And networking, Superyacht Knowledge is a great networking tool, let’s not forget, networking is often considered to be a faceto-face experience, some hate it, others thrive on it, but every piece of knowledge transferred is a network stepping stone, Superyacht Knowledge is a networking tool, when you read an editorial and have a need for the product/service you can make contact with the company concerned and get personal. Enjoy.

New Innovations at Quantum REDEFINING the Future

NEW 5000S CONTROL SYSTEM

All Quantum Systems are operated via a control unit that uses customized algorithms to direct the stabilizing movements to the fins or rotors. In early 2022, Quantum launched the new 5000S control system, representing a major advancement in control technology.

requires 60% less power than a standard hydraulic system, only consuming energy as required, when required. There is a lot of wasted energy with a traditional hydraulic system (approximately 40%), but the F45 Hybrid drops to less than 1kW when in standby mode.

Electric fin stabilizers on larger vessels (60m+), become cost prohibitive due to the prices associated with gear boxes and servo motors. Electric fins with gear boxes must be designed to withstand slamming loads which is easier for hydraulic systems to handle with relief valves. The new Hybrid uses a dynamic servo motor, coupled to a low inertia hydraulic pump, that greatly simplifies the overall system and removes all the components that make the hydraulics inefficient. The F45, is efficient, quiet and does not generate heat. This innovative power pack will be available in June 2023.

The 5000S uses a plug-in/add-on modular platform that effectively supports old, current and future control systems and their corresponding algorithms. It has the ability to execute a multitude of requirements, such as underway only, retractable and zero speed functions. The system features remote access capabilities for prompt troubleshooting, recording options that can be stored and downloaded later and a customizable glass bridge interface. As an added convenience, the new control can store drawings, technical data and fluid recommendations. The functionality, flexibility and expandability of the 5000S will carry the advanced control technology well into the future.

F45 HYBRID - HYDRAULIC/ELECTRICINTEGRATED HYBRID POWER SYSTEM

With a prototype under development and a patent pending, Quantum is introducing a new state-of-the-art, integrated hybrid hydraulic/electric power unit. The F45 Hybrid uses the best attributes of both power sources. It offers smooth power that does not fl uctuate and

DYNAMIC LOAD CONTROL

With a patent pending, the new Dynamic Load Control (DLC) helps reduce the heavy electrical cyclic loading and the amount of accumulator storage required in operating a stabilizer system. Typical stabilizer systems require large amounts of accumulation to maintain constant system pressure. The heavy demand for power, can cause the hydraulic pump(s) to go from low to high loads in a short period of time, pulling down the voltage causing “brown outs.” This new technology eliminates these fluctuations and reduces the accumulator volume by 50%-90%. The DLC unit can be added or retrofi tted to an existing system, with minimal system modifications.

TITANIUM

One captain’s mission to ‘bullet proof’ his A/C system

After more than 40 years playing with, working on and running boats in several sectors of the maritime industry, one thing about yachting made Capt. Herb Magney mad: “Why does the air conditioning only break down when guests are aboard?”

The last time it happened to him was in Sicily, thankfully his crew were dynamic — stews distracted the guests with shore-side activities, engineers applied band-aids and deck officers created diversions so that the guests didn't really know what was happening.

But he did know, and he was determined that this time would be the last time. "The last copper condenser I had didn't last six months; it was supposed to last a couple years," Capt. Magney said. "I want it bullet proof, I want titanium! I know it’s out there because I've seen it used in commercial marine applications. So, I was calling around for a replacement and I notice that everyone was calling the same guy in San Diego. So I called him."

Tim Mournian, owner of now Texas-based Titanium Marine Technologies, has spent

thousands of dollars are lost. So these professionals were keen to consider a fail-safe method, even at a premium over copper.

"I can safely say we changed the way the international fishing industry freezes their catch," Mournian said. "But once it [a titanium condenser] goes in, it never goes away, we do not get repeats. So we’re always in search of new markets." He has expanded to working with all types of vessels in North and South America, Mexico and Asia Pacific. In July of 2019, Capt. Magney found his website and Magney’s problems were solved.

Titanium

"The yachting market is exciting to us because they respect quality," Mournian said. He offers a warranty of 10 years on his heat exchangers.

The failure in these traditional systems is a simple matter of chemistry. The standard condensers are made of copper and nickel, and these metals tend to corrode when in contact with seawater. Zincs can keep that at bay, and will work when preventative maintenance is followed rigorously. Let it lapse, even a little, and the results can be unforgiving. Over time, failure is inevitable.

"Any boat that we have a failure on, we're now pushing titanium," said Jeff Wells, Service Manager with Elite Marine Air Conditioning in Fort Lauderdale; which is working on its ninth vessel installing heat

exchangers from Titanium Marine. "From our standpoint, copper is a liability. When the metal fails and fills the circuit with seawater, it's worthless. It can cost tens of thousands to repair. We're pushing titanium for anyone who wants to change."

He noted the delivery time for custom titanium units has been faster than traditional cupro-nickel units. Normal delivery times are eight weeks versus eighteen to twenty four weeks for copper units. The big bonus is that Titanium Marine condensers are made in the USA, not China.

On M/Y Ocean Club, the 161-foot (50m) Trinity Capt. Magney ran for years through dual charter seasons in the Med and Caribbean, the standard set of condensing equipment historically lasted only two years.

"Four years ago, when I got on, they were replacing condensers and they were already going bad a year later when the new boss had a survey done," he said. "We replaced them all two years ago in July, in the middle of the Med season with lots of stress and a huge amount of extra cost."

After about six months, one of the condensers began to fail again, so Magney sent it to the builder for analysis. It was determined there was a factory defect. When he asked the factory about it, "they said, no, you must have done something wrong. But the other one was running just fine. This was in less than a year!" There was no supportive science, just poor materials and workmanship.

That's when Herb started looking around for a better solution. "This is ridiculous, let's take it up a notch," Capt. Magney said. "We can find another manufacturer, coat it, or something. I found titanium when I researched industrial and other commercial shipboard applications. Fishing boats will lose everything without refrigeration, so I’m looking to them, and they’ve all gone with Titanium.”

At first, he thought Titanium was out of reach. The first couple of estimates came back at $25,000-$30,000, even $40,000, with six-month deliveries. Then he found Mournian and Titanium Marine Technologies. The dream became a reality.

So why hasn’t the industry embraced this panacea before now? Primarily, the cost. Titanium parts can be up to two to three times the price of their copper-nickel cousins.

Mostly that’s because the metal is expensive and hard to work with. Welding titanium takes an argon gas environment and usually cannot be done at sea. The process is very labor intensive and the materials are challenging to work with. They require a different set of skills.

“Yachting is an interesting market because they demand quality and reliability. Long-term yacht owners also consider the total cost of ownership”. However, it is not common place to calculate the real return on investment. Most decision makers only go for low price.

“If you are replacing these things every two to five years, how much is that over the life of the boat. Repairs, time off charter, replacement gear; it all adds up fast.” Magney said.

Still, it’s a big nut up front, one perhaps more easily digested after a mid-charter crisis. Here’s the actual story that “broke” Capt. Magney’s A/C condenser back.

“Two years ago, I had a Colorado family onboard. He was the owner of a 50m Christensen charter boat for three years. He knew the business.”

This was when the A/C was about to fail. “We’re hustling all over, collecting bits and pieces. We had the condenser shipped to Naples. Other parts to other places. It was like herding cats, in Europe, in the middle of Med season, at the end of the June/beginning of July. I’m just praying to God, please, make this A/C system last one more week.”

“We get down to Sicily and we’re all good. We’re moving to Syracuse on Friday night. Three-quarters of the way down the coast, the engineer calls up, the whole engine room is in a fog, there’s sprayed oil mist everywhere. The A/C has sprung a hole”

“Great. Can we bandage it? I tell the girls to control the heat, don’t open doors, yada, yada. I do what charter captains do. We get to Syracuse and I tell the guests, here’s what’s going on. We send them ashore and many hours later, the repair is made. By 2:30 am, we’re starting to cool down.”

“We had a great time in Syracuse, then a couple of hours out of Capri we got another leak. We divert to Ischia. We get tours set up

and send the guests ashore. We got an A/C repair man. The agent had gear and a guy there fast and had the repair made.”

“Then we head to Sardinia to have the whole thing replaced. It took a lot of technical welding in a cramped space. That part of the job alone, just the technician, was 3,200 Euros. I had to put all the crew in houses ashore. It was a 21,000 Euro job.”

Mournian said he is excited to be working in the yachting industry. He’s delivered about 40 units to large yachts thus far, and he’s begun calling on builders and A/C skid packagers to offer titanium condensers as an option.

Titanium,

“The value is in the fact that it won’t wear out, corrode or erode.” Magney said. “Titanium doesn’t care how fast you put the water through. And you don’t have to change out the zincs every two weeks. You will never have to replace it. It’ll last longer than the boat.” Plus titanium is a better metal for bio-fouling and corrosion resistance.

His second condenser was installed and Magney is now working with Mournian to manufacture other parts that tend to corrode and fail such as the engine cooler on electrical generators.

Pretty soon, the only key worry all charter captains and crew will have – how to keep the clients engaged when the weather turns!

THE STERLING LACQUER MANUFACTURING COMPANY

A SHORT HISTORY

THE ORIGINS OF STERLING

The entity that would evolve to be the Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907. Then it was known as the Morris Mayer Company. It subsequently became the Mitchell Mayer Company when brothers Leo J. Mitchell, born 1895, and John W. Mitchell, born 1888, joined the company.

That name remained until around 1937, when it changed to the Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company, reflecting its entry into the development and production of Nitrocellulose lacquer coatings. Sterling’s current president, Leo V. Mitchell, worked in the plant at an early age, on Saturdays, school holidays and during summer vacations.

Leo J. Mitchell was the first to join the Morris Mayer company around 1920 and his brother, John W. Mitchell, joined the company around 1933. John and Leo purchased the Morris Mayer company and changed the name, but sadly Leo died unexpectedly in an accident in December 1945 after which John became the president of the company.

In 1937, Sterling moved to a location in the central part of St. Louis, Missouri, and remained there until 1961 before another move to Brannon Avenue, its current location, in the southwestern part of the city.

STERLING’S CURRENT PRESIDENT

Leo V. Mitchell, who always wanted to fly, was accepted into the U.S. Naval Aviation Flight program in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1955, after completing two years of study at St. Louis University.

His father died in early 1958 while he was on duty in Japan. Leo spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot. He was in a squadron which flew a P2V land-based, long-range patrol aircraft built by the Lockheed Aircraft company. While their home base was at the Naval Air Station in Whidbey Island, Washington, deployments were made to Japan and Alaska. After four years of active duty, Leo returned to St. Louis University to complete his studies and remained in the Naval Reserves for an additional 10 years.

Leo began working at Sterling part-time while completing his studies at SLU in December 1961. Upon graduation, he began working full-time in various capacities, including laboratory, manufacturing, purchasing, and sales. In 1968 he became the president of Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company and has continued in that capacity to this day.

The business traditionally offered general industrial coatings, air-dry, and force-dry finishes of all types for industrial equipment, power tools, farm instruments, and consumer products.

32 SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE BRIDGE / STERLING LACQUER MFG. COMPANY

In 1965, a two-component Aliphatic Polyurethane, combined with a Polyester resin was introduced into the U.S. by a large German firm, Farbenfabriken Bayer, from Leverkusen.

ENTRY INTO THE AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY

Sterling was one of only a very few early paint manufacturers to see the possibilities for high-quality, durable aircraft and marine coatings that could withstand all types of environmental issues, and recognized early that these were ideal raw materials for aviation, marine, railroad, and other markets needing long-term durability and resistance to all types of weather and chemicals.

Sterling decided to pursue the aircraft market first, as the company had a big interest in aviation. Trans World Airlines (TWA) were the first major airline to test Sterling’s material and after a six-month test on a Boeing 727, on January 1, 1966, was accepted as the supplier for the exterior coating systems on TWA aircraft.

Subsequently, Sterling obtained contracts to supply amongst others, Delta, United Airlines, and Eastern Airlines. The company also introduced these types of highperformance coatings into the US and Canadian railroad industry for use on locomotives and cabooses. In its aerospace coatings market Sterling also supplies support coatings for aircraft manufacturers such as Lockheed, Boeing, Beech, and Cessna, plus companies in a number of other countries including Europe and the far East.

Sterling also entered the pleasure marine market in the U.S. and Europe. In 1985, Sterling acquired a marine distributor, CP Systems, located in Boom, Belgium. At that time, the name was changed to Sterling Europe N.V. Sterling became interested in CP Systems because of their highly qualified team which had been marketing, distributing, and offering technical advice for the application of these new, high-performance polyurethane coatings to their clients.

The first major yacht project in Europe that used Sterling products was the 54-metre Motor Yacht Stefaren, (now Maridome) when under construction in 1986 in Lowestoft, England. Featured in the headline painting leaving Lowestoft harbour, from the editors private collection. After the successful completion of that build, Sterling’s marine coatings were successfully introduced throughout Europe, mainly into the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Greece.

INVOLVEMENT IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COATING PROJECTS

Sterling specializes in aircraft, marine, and exterior coatings for structures where extreme resistance to weather and chemicals is critical. Sterling has qualified its primers and polyurethane topcoats to meet U.S. Military specifications for aircraft use.

Sterling is a reliable and competitive supplier of High-Quality Marine finishes and looks forward to continue growing its presence in the pleasure marine market throughout Europe and the Mediterranean countries. Sterling is a small, privately-owned company, and is dedicated to increasing its European footprint and to serving its clients for many years to come.

THE ANTIGUA CHARTER YACHT SHOW

4th – 9th December 2022

We are pleased to again invite Brokers, Marine Vendors, Captains & Press to join us at the 61st ACYM. As our regular visitors are aware 2020 did not take place and 2021, even though a memorable gathering of our elite was not up to its usual splendour due to the limited number of yachts attending and the general restrictions imposed due to Covid.

We are pleased to say that this 2022 edition is shaping up to be a gathering, similar, if not better than those pre-pandemic days, in fact we are expecting a tremendous Antigua Yacht Show. The yacht charter industry has seen a quite incredible resurgence during the past months, yachts are busier than they have been in years, agents are getting back on their feet and brokers are smiling again, our industry is booming.

We expect a deluge of yachts to cross this year, or arrive with us from other distant destinations, enticed by the possibility of picking up lucrative Charters. They will assemble on the docks at Nelson’s Dockyard Marina - English Harbour, Antigua Yacht Club and Falmouth Harbour Marina. The Captain’s will be inviting all of the brokers attending, upwards of 300 are expected, to visit their vessels and tour the yacht, meet the crew, in many cases to attend onboard events, even sample the chef’s creations, all with one purpose in mind, to impress. It is important that a broker knows and experiences the quality of the yachts that within a few short days they could be recommending to their clients.

The show offers amazing events for industry vendors to network, these vessels and crew depend on their services that are needed to run efficiently. Vendors get the opportunity to speak to Captains and Crew and network throughout their stay on Island, and to also attend many of the events that will take place shoreside and onboard.

Throughout the span of the show there will be exciting networking events taking place for Brokers, Captains, Chefs, Crew and Vendors, please visit the ACYM website for a full run-down.

Also new at this year’s show will be a section ‘Yachts for Sale’. These vessels can be viewed on the 9th December.

To bring your yacht along you will need to register your vessel, this can be done now by visiting: www.antiguayachtshow.com

Kings of carbon

Multiplex offers high end solutions for the biggest yachts afloat. Their carbon boarding systems are second to none.

Making things simpler, lighter, easier and more convenient is part of the philosophy of multiplex. Founded in 1986, the creative think tank has developed swiftly but surely to become a global market leader in the field of boarding systems, offering top-quality products based on carbon fibre – gangways, ladders, railings, fender launch systems and awnings in the most exclusive design. As well as being supremely stylish, they have the properties that are needed on all yachts – they are lightweight, easy to handle and stow away and moreover they are absolutely rustproof and highly resistant to environmental influences such as salt water. Behind the scenes, a team of nearly 20 people works tirelessly in the R&D and design departments and, of course, in manufacturing. Custom solutions are not an exception at multiplex, but the standard. Designed and parameterizable with high end software, multiplex products are a guarantee for highest quality and absolute fitting accuracy. No other manufacturer of carbon equipment for superyachts offers this combination of services. This is one of the reasons why multiplex is considered the world market leader in this segment. Among other things, multiplex has equipped 80 of the world‘s 100 largest motor yachts to date and supply all the major shipyards around the globe.

MULTIFLAP

The multiflap is light, stable and resistant to deformation. It is also weatherproof, which means that neither wind nor seawater can cause any harm. With a weight of 4.4 kg per metre and a quick, simple fixing system, it can be mounted and dismounted by a single person. The practical hinge system keeps storage space to a minimum.

SUN AWNING SYSTEM

Easy installation and less weight combined with elegant design let the sun awning system become a product which enjoys great popularity. Each sail is individually hand-made so it will suit perfectly the vessel’s outline. Miscellaneous paintings of the poles, several types of sailcloth, loud speakers and lights can personalize the systems according to taste.

MULTIGUARD

The multiguard system is a railing made from pure carbon fibre, designed and shaped according to a client’s individual requirements. Despite its low weight the multiguard system can withstand a lateral pressure of up to 100 kilos and has been certified by Lloyds Register. As is standard with multiplex, the system is available in a free choice of colours with worldwide service.

MULTIFENDER

Based on the multifender modular component system, all multifender systems are produced according to individual requirements. This means that we tailor the multifender to all imaginable conditions so that it can be used in absolutely every location. With responsible utilization, the multifenders are basically designed for vessels weighing up to 12 tons.

MULTISTAIR

The multistair can be used for access over the side, or over the stern, directly into the cockpit. It can be swung 90 degrees from a fully horizontal to a fully vertical position, with all steps automatically aligning in parallel with the surface of the sea. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100% corrosion resistance.

MULTILADDER

The multiplex multiladder system is based on the multiplex typical carbon fibre compound construction system. The lightness of this ladder construction enables an easy and quick assembly and dismantling. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100 % corrosion resistance. Multiplex swim ladders are also characterised by optimum ergonomic features and need less space for stowage.

THE FULL LIFECYCLE APPROACH TO YACHT TARGETING, ACQUISITION, INTEGRATION AND DIVESTITURE

The Yacht Alpha Group (YAG) approach to client representation, research and market intelligence is built on four foundational pillars that together form the full lifecycle of ownership. These are: Targeting and Pre-diligence, Acquisition, PosttransactionIntegration, and DivestiturePreparation,TransferandTransition

yachtalpha.com

YAG has systematically deconstructed the existing value chain of the legacy sales brokerage model and built a new approach from the ground up. The core focus is on neutralising the inherent conflicts of interest, increasing the efficiency of transactions, building a proprietary data set to give our clients an edge, and offering a compensation model that empowers the buyer.

Central to our approach (and, of course, our name) is a focus on capturing alpha, a term likely familiar to those with exposure to finance. In its most pragmatic form, alpha is measurement of riskadjusted performance. We measure performance, and hence alpha, along two main dimensions: Ownership Experience (OX) where performance is measured in terms of the yacht’s capacity to deliver the exact product that the owner demands, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) where performance is both in terms of lower absolute numbers and probability and scale of variance as a result of unplanned costs.

These concepts all have different jobs to do during the four phases of the ownership lifecycle, and we will unpack them below.

TARGETING AND PRE-DILIGENCE

Optimising for the full ownership lifecycle is more than a matter of beginning with the end in mind. It is a matter of understanding that the quality of execution of each part of the cycle has a direct impact on the potential of the next as well as future parts, and that each full cycle also drives the potential of the next full cycle. Potential here is, again, in terms of OX and TCO.

This, in turn, means that the first part of the cycle — targeting and pre-diligence — is critical. The targeting process and associated pre-diligence have an enormous impact on the potential success of the future phases, and without a strong commitment to that process then hope becomes the default strategy.

56 SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE OWNERS / YACHT ALPHA GROUP
yacht alpha group

Core to successful targeting is the intelligent construction of Alpha and Risk Profiles for the buyer. In simple terms, this is a matter of identifying which capabilities of a yacht must outperform its cohort to deliver the ownership the experience demanded. Alpha is true outperformance, and is often the result of bold design bets that create compromises and trade-offs. Understanding and accepting these risks is central to a well-constructed profile.

The first stage of targeting is then simply a matter of running that profile through our proprietary Yacht Match system. We have coded the best options on the market right now and scored the yachts in terms of alpha and risk. The AI in the system begins the process by identifying the strongest alpha matches.

The core advantage of this data-driven first step is that it is objective and not subjective. Passion is not a strategy. However, a buyer’s passion often is a sales-oriented legacy yacht broker’s strategy. Beginning with candidates that are objectively best positioned to deliver peak ownership experience and optimal total cost of ownership is the most solid first step.

Neutralising conflicts of interest in this targeting and pre-diligence phase is absolutely critical. YAG is a fee-based firm. We are well compensated for providing professional services at this stage and do not represent anything on the sell side. To the extent that we benefit from the continuation of the process, we are aligned entirely with the buyer in terms of ensuring that everything is subordinated to derisking the candidates and ensuring that identified potential alpha is captured.

Our pre-diligence work is designed to surface as many potential risks to successful acquisition, integration and divestiture. This work consists in verifying information, presenting the yacht to our advisory network to surface any concerns, and often getting onboard the yacht and doing a full audit.

ACQUISITION

A successful acquisition is built on the confidence that not only was the targeting designed to derisk the acquisition, but also that pre-diligence positively impacts both the total cost of ownership and mitigates the risk of variance from the predicted TotalCostofOwnership

In our model, the success of an acquisition is measured at least six months into the ownership period. By that time, the honeymoon is truly over, and the majority of unforced errors will have emerged. In our model, unforced errors are failing to identify foreseeable risks in six main areas: Ownership Experience, Regulatory, Crew, Operational Expenses, Maintenance Repair & Operations, and Market.

This focus on derisking and the positioning of the endgame beyond the transaction has a significant impact on strategy. Decisions are subordinated to ensuring that the acquisition will be a success in terms of the lived experience and total cost of ownership.

Key to getting this right is redressing the balance in terms of the traditional asymmetries in transactions for complex assets like yachts. In this traditional imbalance, the buyer has more power and the seller has more information. We have built an information system and a derisking process that shifts the balance entirely to the buyer.

Buyers often choose to increase the risk profile by avoiding the additional out-of-pocket costs of supporting professionals. One of the key innovations of the YAG model is to build a commission management system for our clients.

Even though we are fee-based, the legacy sales brokerage model bakes in a commission payment for the buyer’s representative. This commission is used to create a commission management structure that initially reimburses the buyer’s out-of-pocket expenses for other support professionals such as the surveyor and lawyer, as well as funding the integration and divestiture preparation phases of our work.

OWNERS / YACHT ALPHA GROUP SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE 57

POST-TRANSACTION INTEGRATION

So what is integration in terms of the yacht acquisition? In its most direct sense, integration is the process by which all the potential alpha that was identified during the targeting and pre-diligence phase is captured. Some of the critical aspects of integration can include securing the best senior crew, developing a technical maintenance plan, putting in place the fuel and currency hedging strategies, creating a strong charter operation and demand generation function, and generally ensuring that the yacht delivers its core product to the owner.

Critically, both targeting and acquisition are at the root of a well-executed integration phase. Targeting because one of the key criteria in that process is ease and effectiveness of integration in pursuit of potential alpha, and acquisition because during that phase all unanswered key diligence indicators were assessed in terms of risks to integration challenges.

As noted above, where we were retained at the time of the transaction, this work is funded by the commission management facility.

DIVESTITURE PREPARATION

All three prior steps are fundamental to excellent divestiture preparation, transfer and transition. Part of the targeting process should be to understand the demand profile of the yacht in the market and how through skillful acquisition and integration we can improve liquidity in terms of time to maximum cash in the market.

The closing of the loop, then, is the exit from the acquired yacht. This is critical to the Total Cost of Ownership component of the model. Bluntly, having audited dozens of legacy sales brokerage acquisitions, the slippage that occurs with a poorly executed divestiture strategy makes any negotiation ‘win’ on the acquisition transaction look like a rounding error.

We see market risk as one of the core considerations in the targeting and prediligence phase, and candidate yachts are heavily scrutinised. We have an advanced analytics system that produces likely depreciation curves and overall TCO for the yacht, and often this is the key information that leads to a decision to progress or terminate a deal.

Ultimately, the strategy is to utilise our expertise and experience on the buy side to structure the go-to-market approach in such a way as to maximise the demand function, defend the market value, and focus on minimum time to maximum cash, which we refer to as the velocity of the liquidity function.

Our overarching goal in the final phase is to close down as many points of leverage and weakness as possible that we would identify on the buy side. Much of this work is ongoing from the acquisition itself, and that work is generally funded from the commission management facility that was created at the time of the transaction closing.

COMPLETING THE CYCLE: TRANSFER AND TRANSITION

Once the divestiture preparation is completed and an agreement with a new buyer for the yacht is signed, the transfer of the yacht to the new owner is executed. During this entire period the work on identifying the new target yachts is underway. The knowledge gained in the entire cycle about the owner’s alpha profile and appetite for risk across the six main categories is reassessed.

The transition phase sees the cycle begin anew, and we begin the targeting and pre-diligence phases with a more detailed and nuanced alpha profile. In this way, there is a metacycle that is created. Whereas each phase of the ownership lifecycle gains strength from excellent execution of the previous phase, each full cycle improves because of excellent execution of the prior cycle.

ABOUT YACHT ALPHA GROUP

Yacht Alpha Group is a fee-based firm that represents clients buying yachts and throughout the full life cycle of ownership. While our client is usually the ultimate beneficial owner and/or their direct team, we also work with single family offices, captains, surveyors, lenders and lawyers.

In addition to our principal activity in representing clients, we have a research and market intelligence practice. We offer reports and analyses that help buyers make sense of the market, derisk candidate yachts, understand total cost of ownership, and generally increase confidence levels.

Our specialist activities include the production of fairness opinions and comfort letters. The fairness opinions we underwrite build on the similar concept within investment banking where a report is prepared which indicates whether certain financial elements in a transaction, such as price, are fair to a specific constituent. We produce the opinion when we are not involved in the transaction, and where one of the parties wants to subject the agreement to expert third-party scrutiny. Our comfort letters are sought by lenders who need additional information on depreciation vectors and other aspects of the asset prior to lending.

We leverage technology and AI across all of our services. Our proprietary data set is unlike anything else in the industry, and our AI-driven market intelligence system allows our clients to act with the same confidence in a yacht transaction as they do in other complex assets. Additionally, our Yacht Match system identifies alpha potential and surfaces risks and red flags that robustly redresses the traditional informational disadvantage of the buyer.

One additional innovation in the YAG model is our commission management facility. Legacy yacht sales brokerage deals are structured to include a commission for the buyer’s representative. Our commission management facility reimburses any out-of-pocket expenses of our client, including surveyor costs and lawyer fees. Additionally, our fees for full ongoing representation through the integration and divestiture phases are paid from the commission management facility.

We’d be happy to discuss how we may help and whether we are a good fit for each other.

SUPERYACHT POOL AND HOT TUB RESTORATION

A COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO RETURN YOUR DAMAGED HOT TUB OR POOL TO AS-NEW CONDITION

On a busy yacht, the hot tubs and pools can be used constantly. Frequent use exposes the surface finish to ultraviolet light, sand, suntan oil, corrosive chemicals and extremes of temperature. This bombardment can lead to a rapid degeneration of the gelcoat surface.

Using the latest techniques and materials, we offer an on-yacht service to provide full surface restoration, returning the hot tub or pool to its as-new condition. All work includes a 12-month warranty. *

With as little disruption as possible, we arrange for the crew onboard to erect a tent over the hot tub or pool and remove all the hardware such as jet nozzles, lighting, filter housings and controls.  In the meantime, we arrange for all the required materials to be shipped to the yacht in advance of our specialist team’s arrival.

RELIABLE PROTECTION AGAINST LIGHTNING STRIKES

AvOId dIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKES ON YOUR YACHT!

A lightning strike to a yacht is no pleasure and above all dangerous – besides the damage, owners have to cope with the lost season, the loss of charter income and of course a lasting feeling of insecurity.

ELNA GmbH now offers a remedy with the Marine DDCE from Dinnteco.

For several years now, the damages caused by lightning strikes on yachts have been increasing. Reported incidents, up to and including total losses, have tripled and experts expect the numbers to continue to rise. ELNA GmbH, based near Hamburg, now offers a special lightning protection system that certain large yacht owners have already had installed on the masts of their vessels. The so-called Marine DDCE has been delivered, among others, on a Swan 115, a Baltic 146 and a 43-metre Royal Huisman.

Radius of up to 100 metres

The Marine DDCE system, manufactured by Dinnteco in Spain and distributed exclusively in Europe by ELNA, prevents the occurrence of lightning within a protective radius of up to 100 metres by means of a patented system.

This means that the so-called upward streamer, which is necessary for the main discharge, can no longer occur. This reliably prevents direct lightning strikes to the yacht to be protected. The unit only requires sufficient earthing, no power supply is necessary.

With a weight starting at 2.45 kilograms, the device made of stainless steel can also be easily installed on sailing yachts from approx. 45 feet. Until now, motor and sailing yachts have not been in the focus of attention when it comes to lightning protection, because even if lightning is discharged, damage is often caused

SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE 77

by the constructional conditions of yachts. With the Marine DDCE, direct lightning strikes to the protected structure will be avoided. The system protects the crew from direct lightning strikes and also from strong electromagnetic fields generated in the vicinity of the lightning strike.

Already amazing results

“This is the first time that an effective solution has been developed for lightning protection on yachts“, says Leif Schick, Managing Director of ELNA. „The DDCE system has already been pro-

tecting buildings for many years with amazing results. With the Marine DDCE we can now offer a device explicitly designed for the requirements and harsh conditions at sea.“

Pantaenius‘ yacht insurance specialists also welcome the new offering. „Incidents of lightning strikes on yachts have increased sharply in recent years,“ knows Holger Flindt, Head of Claims at Pantaenius. „Not always but very often a direct or indirect lightning strike means a considerable danger for people and material. In such a case,

a properly installed lightning protection system such as the DDCE system not only protects against damage and injury, but also against any excess in the event of a claim.“

Owners rely on DDCE

The Marine DDCE will is suitable for any size of yacht. Certain owners of large sailing yachts already rely on the DDCE. Ship-yards which installed the system are - for example – Baltic Yachts and Royal Huisman.

HOw dOES THE ddCE wORK?

During a thunderstorm, a potential difference is created between the clouds, which are usually negatively charged in a thunderstorm, and the positively charged earth. At certain points, this can lead to an increase in charge concentrations. In these strong electrical voltage fields between clouds and earth, lightning finally discharges. In the process, negative charge carriers first migrate towards the ground in the socalled conductive lightning and prepare an ionised channel through which the current can finally flow. At the same time, the ground under the thunderstorm becomes positively charged. At exposed locations such as church steeples - or the masts of sailing yachts or equipment carriers of motor yachts - the electric field is particularly large. From such places, a positive charge - also called an upward streamer – can go towards the leading lightning and closes the lightning channel so that the main discharge can follow. This usually consists of several individual discharges and can reach a current strength of 100,000 amperes. The Marine DDCE compensates the positive and negative charges in a controlled manner and drain it through the water. The balanced electrical voltage field avoids the upward streamer.

Lürssen – Fuel Cell Technology

Lürssen paves the way to emission-free yachting.

On the journey to net zero, alternative sources of energy will play an integral role in reducing carbon emissions and the superyacht industry has an opportunity to be at forefront of this development with the support of some visionary owners. Paving the way for change, Lürssen has been researching the potential of hydrogen fuel cells alongside its partners since 2009.

When exploring alternative fuels for superyachts, a key consideration is ensuring maximum energy generated as efficiently as possible. Philipp Himmelein, head of project design and naval architecture yachts at Lürssen, explains, “The hydrogen fuel cell has a long history of providing an efficient, sustainable solution across many varied applications. As well as the environmental considerations, an additional benefit of a fuel cell is that it is practically silent compared to a diesel engine, meaning that on-board comfort can be significantly improved.”

Pursuing this potential, Lürssen has committed to a strategic partnership with Freudenberg –one of the leading experts for maritime fuel cells. With the aim of bringing fuel cells on board its yachts, a unique state-of-the-art innovation laboratory has been built onsite. Under real-life ambient conditions and with all required auxiliary systems, this demonstration plant will be the final preparation necessary to bringing fuel cells on board.

The fuel cell concept being developed by Lürssen and Freudenberg is driven by hydrogen, which is continuously reformed from methanol. “The choice of methanol rather than elemental hydrogen is due to its higher energy density, the simplicity of handling and its wider availability,” adds Himmelein. “While the lighter energy density of methanol compared to diesel requires increased tank storage volume, it has significantly less impact on guest spaces than gases such as elemental hydrogen and LNG.”

Furthermore, the sustainability of an energy source must be judged across the entire life cycle. As methanol is a by-product of many other chemical reactions, it can be produced completely carbon neutral.

Lürssen is currently incorporating this technological research and development into a revolutionary new-build project for a technology driven client. In this yacht, the fuel cell flanks the conventional generators and enables the yacht to anchor carbon neutral for 15 days or cruise 1000 miles at slow speed.

About Lürssen

The German yacht builder Lürssen has earned a leading international reputation as the specialist for exclusive, bespoke yachts of outstanding engineering mastery. The development of sustainable technologies and innovations in yacht building are firmly anchored in Lürssen’s DNA.

The privately owned company was founded in 1875 and remains solely in the hands of the fourth generation of the Lürssen family. With a workforce of 1800, Lürssen maintains three stateof-the-art production facilities in northern Germany. Lürssen also offers unique facilities and unrivalled potential for carrying out multiple refits simultaneously - whether a yacht is a Lürssen yacht or one built by another shipyard.

The latest generation of Lürssen superyachts boasts improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions as well as a reduction in noise levels. The innovative company does not however lose sight of its heritage and takes care of the minute details with many elements of their vessels being completed by hand and employing the skills of unique craftsmen to deliver a yacht that every owner dreams of.

Their connection to shipbuilding is as deep-rooted and individual as only family bonds can be, the commitment is deep, the approach individual. When the company founder Friedrich Lürssen said, “Leading in quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation,” he was expressing the values Lürssen continues to uphold to this day.

COSTA RICA’S YACHTING PARADISE

GATEWAY TO THE EASTERN TROPICAL PACIFIC SEASCAPE

Superyacht owners from around the world are flocking to Peninsula Papagayo to access its ultra-luxe amenities, unparalleled biodiversity and abundance of eco-adventures. As the only marina facility in Costa Rica enjoying 25-minute access to an international airport, Marina Papagayo provides insider access to one of the most captivating natural playgrounds in the Pacific Americas. Last December, the 150-berth marina hosted a record number of superyachts with owners using the port as a home base to cruise coastal waters abounding with marine life and UNESCO-listed dive sites.

“Marina Papagayo offers superyacht owners a more exploratory experience than established destinations like the Mediterranean and St. Barts,” says Dan Eaffaldano, Operations Director at Marina Papagayo. “The Eastern Tropical Seascape, from Isla del Coco and Coiba to Malpelo Island and the Galápagos, is easily accessible and less crowded.”

Destinations like Cocos Island National Park, the Costa Rica Thermal Dome and Drake’s Bay bring ocean enthusiasts face-to-face with tropical reef fish, giant manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphin megapods numbering in the thousands.

WHERE CAPTAIN IS KING

On land, Peninsula Papagayo boasts 1,400-acres of unspoiled paradise where luxury coexists with the wild. Yacht owners and captains can take advantage of exclusive access to The Clubhouse at Prieta Beach, a private member’s club for homeowners outfitted with glossy amenities from luxury beach cabanas and a trio of pools to a fitness center and two signature restaurants. Owners, captains and crews also have direct access to Papagayo Explorers, an in-house adventure outfitter that curates custom outdoor expeditions accompanied by naturalist guides including outrigger canoeing, wilderness hikes, bioluminescence paddles, mountain biking, coral gardening and waterbiking. Surfers can head to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point to ride Costa Rica’s world-famous breaks. Later this year, Papagayo Explorers will launch a new wilderness outpost featuring a series of hanging bridges, ziplines and over 12 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails within 200 acres of protected wildlands at Papagayo’s spectacular Palmares Preserve.

In addition, an 18-hole, par-72, Arnold Palmer-designed course wends through emerald forests buzzing with monkey chatter and to precipitous elevations affording dramatic views of Culebra Bay. The adjacent tennis center features four clay har tru, one grass and three pickleball courts, all lighted for night play. Rum tasting, succulent steaks and line-caught seafood can be enjoyed at 12 restaurants dotting the peninsula including the marina village, Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica and Andaz Peninsula Papagayo. Wellness rituals and routines are easy to maintain with three lavish spas, daily fitness and yoga classes, outdoor exercise stations and city bikes. In 2024, Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve Residence and Hotel will debut just steps from the sea caves and grotto pools of Pochote Bay.

“Peninsula Papagayo’s eco-luxury community, world-class amenities and immersive wildlife experiences are transforming the region into one of the world’s premier yachting destinations,” said Eaffaldano.

IN THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY, WE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO BEING CHALLENGED BY OUR CLIENTS AND ACHIEVING THE IMPOSSIBLE Water Revolution Foundation is a non-profit on a mission to neutralise the footprint of the yachting industry and preserve the world’s precious oceans. Promoting new technology and empowering innovation Proactively creating the industry’s own sustainability agenda, beyond legislative requirements Reinvesting in ocean conservation Our activities revolve around three areas of focus: We’re currently working on the following projects: Software tool to assess impact of design and build choices Sustainability management courses Rating system to assess and compare yacht footprints Database of sustainable solutions WATERREVOLUTIONFOUNDATION.ORG

The first version of the tool calculates the efficiency and the emissions of superyachts, and by being able to calculate this, one can also identify the actual environmental impact. Many yachts already volunteered to calculate their preliminary YETI score and obtain their complimentary feedback report. However, more yachts are very much welcome to further test the beta calculator for its robustness and inclusiveness.

We have both an obligation and an opportunity to reduce our footprint and future-proof our industry. That’s where the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) comes in as a joint industry project to benchmark existing yachts as well as new concept designs against an average operational profile, thereby showing how the yacht compares to the rest of the fleet. We are keen to connect with captains, engineers, shipyards, naval architects and yacht management companies to reach the best result. For YETI, reach us through YETI@waterrevolutionfoundation.org

M2M FENDERS

May 2006. Mid life crises, Eureka moment or just plain nuts? Whatever it was, this was the month I set up M2M Fenders.

I had been sailing a couple of times with a mate and done a little dinghy sailing on a river as a teenager. Other than that, I had no contacts in the marine industry and had absolutely no idea how it worked.

Luckily for me, the marine industry is full of people who are happy to help, support and guide you.

So here we are in 2022. With established suppliers in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, UK and USA.

More importantly, a diverse client base in 53 countries.

From little acorns, salty old sea dogs and wooden boats, we have evolved the business into being a recognised specialist for mooring products and solutions.

With small wooden racing yachts needing solutions for Cowes Week up to Superyachts and Megayachts with their own specialist requirements.

We work closely with crew, owners, agents, yacht builders, refit yards, dealers, and brokers.

We endeavour to make processes as simple and as seamless as we can.

Our product range has evolved over the years, and we have tried to maintain a product range which complements itself:

• Inflatable fenders

• Standard fenders

• Fender covers

• Fender hooks

Inflatable jet ski docks

• Inflatable platforms

• Inflatable sea pools

• Inflatable slides

• Inflatable sun loungers

• Transom fenders

• Mooring lines

• Tender whips

We work very closely with our product suppliers and are immensely proud of the relationships we have built with them since our humble beginnings.

These relationships are important to us.

They allow us to work together to develop innovative ideas and products for our customers.

It also means that between us, we can back up our product range with a valued service.

We are always looking to develop new products and ideas with our suppliers.

We all need to adapt to changes to develop and grow.

As part of our development, we set up a new company in late 2021 to help us deal with the challenges created by the changes to the trading environment between the UK and the EU.

M2M Fenders International B.V. is based in The Netherlands. We run our Dutch company as an exact mirror of our UK company, with the identical accounting package and supplier network.

With Made 2 Measure Fenders LLP based in the UK and M2M Fenders International B.V. based in The Netherlands, we are perfectly placed to provide our products, solutions and services to our growing worldwide customer base.

We are a small family business. We punch above our weight. We value our customers, our suppliers, ourselves, and our businesses.

Deliveries to ports, marinas, and shipyards outside our delivery areas are made by trusted drivers or couriers and charged at cost.

SuperyachtCaptains.com is an exceptional online platform where professional Captains meet to exchange thoughts, ideas, product information, crew, destinations, experiences etc. in privacy. It allows both open and private discussion and also allows the members to contact and keep in touch with each other 24/7, wherever they happen to be – globally.

With over 1950+ approved members, and growing, the site has, over the years, offered up an incredible amount of help and advice that can be found nowhere else to Captains seeking information. Much of this information is held within its encyclopaedic store of over 30,000 searchable posts. If it cannot be found a quick post will almost certainly get the answers.

To join is simple, apply through the login page, all applications are checked and, if approved, passcodes etc will be forwarded to the applicant. This process has over the years helped to build a membership of qualified Captains that have respect for each other and the industry that they serve.

Membership is free. With 3000 to 4000 visits per month from the members the site is unique. If you are a working Captain, a retired Captain, a Captain managing one yacht for an Owner or a Captain between jobs you are welcome to apply. The site is not for Captains that have left the oceans and work shoreside for large companies.

Initially trading under the Just World Leisure banner in the early ‘20s – providing yachtcharter, hospitality, and brokerage services – Just & Co has recently concentrated more specifically on technological innovations in both yacht communications and internet-atsea requirements, and on the research-and-development and promotion of new naval architecture hull-form applications.

Recognising the limited evolution of hull-design concepts over the decades – and resulting lack of ‘sea-comfort’ in smaller boats - a collaboration and partnership was formed during the past 20 years with the Icelandic-based team behind the invention of the revolutionary ‘ÖK Hull Technology’ – the company RAFNAR ehf. This has in recent years lead to the expansion of the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, which Just & Co represents from Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

The revolutionary RAFNAR boats and their unusual ‘ÖK Hull’ provide the ability to travel long distances at sea in unique comfort in ‘displacement mode’, at high speed; with little fatigue and stress encountered for guests, crew, or the actual boat. Prime importance is placed upon ‘Keeping Comfort at Sea’, durability, reliability, and safety – allowing a softer and more efficient ride and experience at sea, and a very significant decrease in uncomfortable ‘bounce-and-slam’.

YACHTING COMPANY EXPANDS PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN”

In 2020, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca was very proud to welcome their trusted Mediterranean partners Aquamarine Ltd of Turkey into the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, with Aquamarine Ltd operating since then as ‘RAFNAR Turkey’. They jointly announced the construction and official launch of the first ‘RAFNAR 1100 Cabin Explorer’ yacht-tender, constructed by Aquamarine Ltd in Turkey, in late 2021.

“PALMA-BASED
With four decades fully immersed in the maritime industry in naval-military,
operation, refit-and-repair, yacht-management, charter, yacht-technology, and yacht brokerage, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca brings to the maritime industry a mature and acute vision and focus.

Aquamarine Ltd is a highly respected Marmaris-based superyachting services and yachting company, now a member and partner within the global RAFNAR Maritime boat production group, and working closely with Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca.

The current RAFNAR Maritime design-portfolio covers serviceand-support craft from 8,5m to 12m, with a 15m and a 17m Rafnar support boat soon to be introduced to the range. These craft vary in design, from purpose built super-yacht Explorer/Transporter RIBs and Open support-tenders, to Search-and-Rescue and Coast-guard Patrol-RIBs. Ruggedness and functionality can be balanced with customized luxury features and styling.

As RAFNAR Maritime Licensor, Distributor, and build-consultant in Palma de Mallorca, Just & Co, is providing a Mediterranean base for consultation and construction of the RAFNAR/ÖK Hull craft. Says Anthony Just, founder and CEO of Just & Co: ‘We are immensely proud to be a partner and salesagent consultant for this new series of boats that are being constructed by Aquamarine Ltd / RAFNAR Turkey under Melis Giraud’s keen-eyed supervision and direction - for both the local Turkish and Mediterranean markets, and for broader international markets.’
